Abstract
Aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals represent a peculiar class of heterocyclic merocyanines, compounds bearing pronounced and rather short dipoles with great push-pull characteristics that define their rich properties. They are accessible via a wide array of synthetic concepts and procedures, ranging from addition-elimination and condensation procedures up to rearrangement and metal-mediated reactions. With our work from 2020, aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals have been identified as powerful and promising dyes with pronounced and vastly tunable solid-state emission and aggregation-induced emission properties. One characteristic trademark of this class of dye molecules is the level of control that could be exerted, and which was thoroughly explored. Based on these results, the field was opened to extend the system to bi- and multichromophoric systems by the full toolkit of synthetic organic chemistry thus giving access to even more exciting properties and manifolded substance libraries capitalizing on the AIE properties. This review aims at outlining the reaction-based principles that allow for a swift and facile access to aroyl-S,N-ketene acetals, their methodical and structural evolution and the plethora of fluorescence and aggregation properties.

Abstract
The diverse synthesis of heterocyclic compounds has always been one of the popular subjects of organic chemistry. To this end, great efforts have been devoted to developing new reagents and establishing new strategies and methods concerning efficiency, selectivity and sustainability. β-Oxodithioesters and their enol tautomers (i.e., α-enolic dithioesters), as a class of simple and readily accessible sulfur-containing synthons, have been widely applied in the construction of various five- and six-membered heterocycles (e.g., thiophenes, thiopyrans, thiazoles, pyridines and quinolines) and other useful open-chain frameworks. Due to their unique chemical structures, β-oxodithioesters bear multiple reaction sites, which enable them to participate in two-component or multicomponent reactions to construct various heterocyclic compounds. In the past decade, the application of β-oxodithioesters in the synthesis of heterocycles has made remarkable progress. Herein, an update on the recent advances in the application of β-oxodithioesters in the synthesis of heterocycles during the period from 2013 to 2023/06 is provided. According to the different types of rings concerning heteroatoms in products, this review is divided into five sections under discussion including (i) synthesis of sulfur-containing heterocycles, (ii) synthesis of sulfur and nitrogen-containing heterocycles, (iii) synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles, (iv) synthesis of nitrogen and oxygen-containing heterocycles, and (v) modification to other open-chain frameworks.

Abstract
In the last decade, transition-metal-catalyzed direct C-H bond functionalization has been recognized as one of most efficient approaches for the derivatization of thioethers. Within this category, both mono- and bidentate-directing group strategies achieved the remote C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H functionalization of thioethers, respectively. This review systematically introduces the major advances and their mechanisms in the field of transition-metal-catalyzed remote C-H functionalization of thioethers from 2010 to 2021.

Abstract
A concise synthetic route to spiroindoline-fused S-heterocycles was developed through copper-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation using enaminothiones as donor-acceptor synthons. Both 3-diazoindolin-2-imines and 3-diazooxindoles were amenable to work as effective C1 building blocks. The reaction proceeds via a copper-catalyzed cascade process involving the in situ generation of copper(I) carbene and C-S/C-C bond formation. This synthetic protocol features the use of readily available substrates, diverse substituent tolerance, and good to excellent yields.

Abstract
AbstractKetene N,O-acetals are robust and versatile synthons. Herein, we outline the synthesis of stable ketene N,O-acetals in the twenty-first century. In addition, we review recent developments in the chemistry of ketene N,O-acetals, as it applies to the vinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction, electrolysis, and pericyclic transformations. While dated reports rely on in situ use, modern methods of ketene N,O-acetal synthesis are heavily oriented towards producing products with high ‘bench’ stability; moreover, in the present century, chemists typically enhance the stability of ketene N,O-acetals by positioning an electron-withdrawing group at the β-terminus or at the N-position. As propitious substrates in the vinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction, ketene N,O-acetals readily provide polyketide adducts with high regioselectivity. When exposed to electrolysis conditions, the title functional group forms a reactive radical cation and cleanly couples with a variety of activated olefins. Given their electron-rich nature, ketene N,O-acetals act as facile substrates in several rearrangement reactions; further, ketene N,O-acetals reserve the ability to act as either dienophiles or dienes in Diels–Alder reactions. Lastly, ketene N,O-acetals are seemingly more stable than their O,O-counterparts and more reactive than analogous N,N- or S,S-acetals; these factors, in combination, make ketene N,O-acetals advantageous substitutes for other ketene acetal homologues.1 Introduction2 Select Methods of Stabilization-Oriented Ketene N,O-Acetal Synthesis3 Ketene N,O-Acetals in the Vinylogous Mukaiyama Aldol Reaction4 Ketene N,O-Acetals in Anodic Coupling and Electrochemical Oxidation Reactions5 Rearrangement and Diels–Alder Reactions of Ketene N,O-Acetals6 Conclusions, Perspectives, and Directions

Abstract
An efficient PhIO-mediated oxidative C═C bond cleavage and reassembly of enaminone toward oxazolone with high regioselectivity has been reported. DFT calculations revealed that the reaction proceeded through an oxygen atom transfer, C═C bond cleavage, alkylthio migration, and reassembly cascade. This strategy is highlighted by high atom and step economy with formation of five bonds in one pot and generation of a high-valued oxazolone skeleton under mild conditions.

Abstract
Reported herein is a syn-thioallylation of ynamides incorporating a sulfide moiety at the α-position and an allyl group at the β-position of the ynamide. The transformation is successful under ytterbium(iii)-catalysis, providing access to highly substituted thioamino-skipped-dienes with broad substrate scope. Thus, tetrasubstituted olefins (with four different functional groups: amide, phenyl, thioaryl/alkyl, and allyl on the carbon centers) are made in a single step from readily accessible ynamides, preserving complete atom economy. The reaction can be extended to the synthesis of selenoamino dienes by ynamide syn-selenoallylation. DFT studies and control experiments provide insight into the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
An effective, diversity oriented, one-pot reaction of 4-amino-2-(het)aryl/alkyl-5-functionalized thiazoles has been disclosed, utilizing aryl/heteroaryl/alkyl dithioesters as thiocarbonyl coupling partners in a modified Thorpe-Ziegler type cyclization. The reaction proceeds at room temperature, under mild conditions, in excellent yields, displaying broad functional group compatibility at 2 and 5 positions of thiazoles. This synthetic strategy has been further expanded for the one-pot construction of two highly potent tubulin polymerization inhibitors, i.e., 2-(het)aryl-4-amino-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyaroyl) thiazoles, in high yields.

Abstract
Alkyl ketene acetals are useful reactants in a variety of synthetic processes, and yet, there are limited routes to their formation as isolable products. We now report the successful synthesis and isolation of heteroaryl ketene acetals through intermolecular transfer of alkoxyl (δ+OR) from electrophilic peroxides to lithiated benzofurans, indoles, and pyridines. Primary and secondary peroxyacetals enable selective transfer of the nonanomeric alkoxy group in moderate to high yield; substrates bearing an electron-donating substituent show enhanced reactivity toward electrophilic oxygen. Heteroaryl ketene acetals are remarkably stable throughout traditional purification techniques; the superior stability of ketene N,O-acetals compared to ketene O,O-acetals is presumably due to increased aromaticity of the indole and pyridine structures. The presented method overcomes typical problems associated with alkyl ketene acetal synthesis as reported products withstood workup and flash column chromatography procedures.

Abstract
Carbon-sulfur bond cross-coupling has become more and more attractive as an alternative protocol to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Diverse transformations through transition-metal-catalyzed C-S bond activation and cleavage have recently been developed. This review summarizes the advances in transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling via carbon-sulfur bond activation and cleavage since late 2012 as an update of the critical review on the same topic published in early 2013 (Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013, 42, 599-621), which is presented by the categories of organosulfur compounds, that is, thioesters, thioethers including heteroaryl, aryl, vinyl, alkyl, and alkynyl sulfides, ketene dithioacetals, sulfoxides including DMSO, sulfones, sulfonyl chlorides, sulfinates, thiocyanates, sulfonium salts, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfonates, thiophene-based compounds, and C[double bond, length as m-dash]S functionality-bearing compounds such as thioureas, thioamides, and carbon disulfide, as well as the mechanistic insights. An overview of C-S bond cleavage reactions with stoichiometric transition-metal reagents is briefly given. Theoretical studies on the reactivity of carbon-sulfur bonds by DFT calculations are also discussed.

Abstract
A SPINOL-derived chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed asymmetric formal [2 + 3]-annulation of in situ generated alkynyl imines and 1,4-dithiane-2,5-diol has been developed to afford enantiopure α-alkynylated thiazolidones with up to 72% yield and 98.5 : 1.5 er. This tandem annulation involved a tandem S-addition of alkynyl imines/intramolecular acetalization, followed by PDC-mediated oxidation. The α-alkynylated thiazolidones could facilely afford the corresponding chiral α-alkynylated or α-alkenylated cyclic sulfoxides via further elaboration.

Abstract
Concise construction of furan and thiophene units has played an important role in the synthesis of potentially bioactive compounds and functional materials. Herein, an efficient Lewis acid ZnCl2 catalyzed [4+1] annulation of alkylthio-substituted enaminones is reported, that is, α-oxo ketene N,S-acetals with sulfur ylides to afford 2-acyl-3-aminofuran derivatives. In a similar fashion, [4+1] annulation of the corresponding enaminothiones, that is, α-thioxo ketene N,S-acetals, with sulfur ylides efficiently proceeded to give multisubstituted 3-aminothiophenes. This method features wide substrate scopes as well as broad functional group tolerance, offering a concise route to highly functionalized furans and thiophenes.

Abstract
CuBr2-mediated intramolecular oxidative cyclopropanation of α-oxo ketene N,S-acetals was efficiently achieved to afford 2-thioalkyl-3-azabicyclo-[3.1.0]hexenes under mild conditions. 2-Oxyalkyl- and 2-aminoallyl-3-azabicyclo-[3.1.0]hexenes were also obtained from the corresponding α-oxo ketene N,O- and N,N-acetals. Further C-S bond transformations led to diverse 2-aryl-substituted 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexene derivatives in good to high yields.

Abstract
A sequential multi-component reaction of the nitroketene dithioacetals, cysteamine hydrochloride, isatin and different CH-acids is described. This efficient method provides new functionalized thiazolo pyridine-fused spirooxindoles and thiazolo pyridopyrimidine-fused spirooxindoles in good yields. In the case of using isatin derivatives (5-bromoisatin and 5-chloroisatin), the reaction was carried out by using nano-SiO2 (20 mol%) as an effective heterogeneous Lewis acid promoter. This type of reaction provides a range of skeletally different polycyclic spiro thiazole-based heterocyclic structures and represents attractive advantages including straightforward one-pot operation under the catalyst-free condition and simple workup procedures without using tedious purification procedure.

Abstract
A base-mediated dinucleophilic cyclization of readily accessible 2,3-epoxy tosylates with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole has been developed for the one-pot diastereoselective synthesis of benzimidazole-based tricyclic compounds equipped with two stereogenic centres. With trans-substrates bearing an aryl or alkyl substituent at the C3 position, the reaction involves an initial S-C1 bond-forming intermolecular alkylation followed by an N-C3 bond-forming, endo-selective intramolecular epoxide ring-opening cyclization reaction. A spectacular regioselectivity switching (tandem S-C3 and N-C1 bond formation reactions) was observed with related trans-N-tosylaziridine substrates. Wide substrate scope, complete diastereoselectivity, high to complete regioselectivity and mild transition metal-free conditions render this protocol particularly efficient and practical.

Abstract
The aromatic nitrogen atoms of heteroarylaldehydes are activated by carbene catalysts to react with ketone electrophiles. Multi-functionalized cyclic N,O-acetal products are afforded in good to excellent yields and optical purities. Our reaction involves the formation of an unprecedented aza-fulvene-type acylazolium intermediate. A broad range of N-heteroaromatic aldehydes and electron-deficient ketone substrates works effectively in this transformation. Several of the chiral N,O-acetal products afforded through this protocol exhibit excellent antibacterial activities against Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) and are valuable in the development of novel agrichemicals for plant protection.
