Quaterpyridines as Scaffolds for Functional Metallosupramolecular Materials

Template Synthesis of Cyclometalated Macrocycle Iridium(III) Complexes Based on Photoinduced C-N Cross-Coupling Reactions In Situ

The synthesis of metal macrocycle complexes holds paramount importance in coordination and supramolecular chemistry. Toward this end, we report a new, mild, and efficient protocol for the synthesis of cyclometalated macrocycle Ir(III) complexes: [Ir(L1)](PF6) (1), [Ir(L2)](PF6) (2), and [Ir(L3)](PF6) (3), where L1 presents 10,17-dioxa-3,6-diaza-2(2,8),7(8,2)-diquinolina-1,8(1,4)-dibenzenacyclooctadecaphane, L2 is 10,13,16,19,22,25-hexaoxa-3,6-diaza-2(2,8),7(8,2)-diquinolina-1,8(1,4)-dibenzenacyclohexacosaphane, and L3 is 4-methyl-10,13,16,19,22,25-hexaoxa-3,6-diaza-2(2,8),7(8,2)-diquinolina-1,8(1,4)-dibenzenacyclohexacosaphane. This synthesis involves the preassembly of two symmetric 2-phenylquinoline arms into C-shape complexes, followed by cyclization with diamine via in situ interligand C-N cross-coupling, employing a metal ion as a template. Moreover, the synthetic yield of these cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes, tethered by an 18-crown-6 ether-like chain, is significantly enhanced in the presence of K+ ion as a template. The resultant cyclometalated macrocycle Ir(III) complexes exhibit high stability, efficient singlet oxygen generation, and superior catalytic activity for the aerobic selective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides under visible light irradiation in aqueous media at room temperature. The photocatalyst 2 demonstrates recyclability and can be reused at least 10 times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. These results unveil a new and complementary approach to the design and in situ synthesis of cyclometalated macrocycle Ir(III) complexes via a mild interligand-coupling strategy.

Preorganization Effects on Eu(III) Ion Coordination by Dipyridyl-Phenanthroline Ligands: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Analysis

Although 1,10-phenanthroline has been proven to hold a strong complexing capacity for f-block elements and their derivatives have been applied in many fields, research on more highly or completely rigid phenanthroline ligands is still rare due to the challenging syntheses. Here, we reported three tetradentate ligands 2,9-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L1), 12-(pyridin-2-yl)-5,6-dihydroquinolino[8,7b][1,10]phenanthroline (L2), and 5,6,11,12-tetrahydrobenzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']bis([1,10]phenanthroline) (L3) with increasing preorganization on the side chain; among which, L3 is fully preorganized. Their complexation reactions with Eu(III) were systematically investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), UV-vis titrations, and single-crystal structures. It is found that all three ligands form only 1:1 M/L complexes with Eu(III). The single-crystal structures revealed that the three ligands hold similar coordination modes, while their stability constants determined by UV-vis titrations were L3 (4.80 ± 0.01) > L2 (4.38 ± 0.01) > L1 (3.88 ± 0.01). This trend is supported not only by the thermodynamic stability of rigid ligands compared to free ligands but also by the conclusion that rigid ligands exhibit faster reaction rates (lower energy barrier) than free ligands kinetically. This work is helpful in providing theoretical guidance for the subsequent development of highly preorganized chelating ligands with strong coordination ability and high selectivity for f-block elements.

Synthesis of Mono-, Di-, Tri-, and Tetra-cationic Pyridinium and Vinylpyridinium Modified [2.2]Paracyclophanes: Modular Receptors for Supramolecular Systems

In this report, a new series of mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-cationic pyridinium and vinyl pyridinium-modified [2.2]paracyclophanes as useful molecular tectons for supramolecular systems are described. Regioselective functionalization at specific positions, followed by resolution step and successive transformations through Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura and Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling chemistry furnish a series of modular PCP scaffolds. In our proof-of-concept study, on N-methylation, the PCPs bearing (cationic) pyridyl functionalities were demonstrated as useful molecular receptors in host-guest supramolecular assays. The PCPs on grafting with light-responsive azobenzene (-N=N-) functional core as side-groups impart photosensitivity that can be remotely transformed on irradiation, offering photo-controlled smart molecular functions. Furthermore, the symmetrical PCPs bearing bi-, and tetra-pyridyl functionalities at the peripheries have enormous potential to serve as ditopic and tetratopic 3D molecular tectons for engineering non-covalent supramolecular assemblies with new structural and functional attributes.

Synthesis of an Adaptable Molecular Barrel and Guest Mediated Stabilization of Its Metastable Higher Homologue

Structural and functional modulation of three-dimensional artificial macromolecular systems is of immense importance. Designing supramolecular cages that can show stimuli mediated reversible switching between higher-order structures is quite challenging. We report here construction of a Pd₆ trifacial barrel (1) by coordination self-assembly. Surprisingly, barrel 1 was found to exhibit guest-responsive behavior. In presence of fullerenes C₆₀ and C₇₀, 1 unprecedentedly transformed to its metastable higher homologue Pd₈ tetrafacial barrel (2), forming stable host-guest complexes (C₆₀)₃⊂2 and (C₇₀)₂⊂2, respectively. Again, encapsulated fullerenes could be extracted from the cavity of 2 using 1,2-dichlorobenzene, leading to its facile conversion to the parent trifacial barrel 1. Such reversible structural interconversion between an adaptable molecular barrel and its guest stabilized higher homologue is an uncommon observation.

6,6′-Di-(8″-quinoline)-2,2′-bipyridine Cobalt(II) Complex

This short note describes the synthesis of a novel compound, 6,6′-di-(8″-quinoline)-2,2′-bypyridine (2), that bears a bipyridyl backbone and quinoline donors. Compound 2 coordinates with a cobalt(II) ion in a tetradentate manner and affords the complex [CoII(2)(TfO)2], whose molecular structure has been identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction crystallographic analysis. The coordination features of 2 were compared with those of 2,2′:6′,2″:6″,2‴-quaterpyridine (qtpy, 1), a well-studied tetradentate polypyridine ligand. Compound 2 presents a new example of tetradentate chelators for 3d metal ions.

Synthesis of Non-centrosymmetric Dipolar 4,4'-Bipyridines: Potential Molecular Tectons for Programmed Assembly of Supramolecular Systems

In this report, we describe a modular synthesis approach towards a new series of non-centrosymmetric, dipolar 4,4'-bipyridines bearing 2,6- and 3,5-functionalized pyridyl moieties at the peripheries. Central to our strategy is the selective substitution on only one pyridyl motif that could contain electron-donating (-CH₃ ) or electron-withdrawing (-F, -Cl, -CF₃ ) groups which causes electronic/steric effects on one nitrogen atom in 4,4'-bipyridines. This synthetic protocol was further applied to prepare azo-functionalized (-N=N-) asymmetric bipyridines and non-centrosymmetric 4,4'-bipyridine N-oxide scaffolds, which overcome the synthetic hurdles oxidizing 4,4'-bipyridines to N-monoxides selectively at only one pyridine. Compared to the conventional symmetrical bipyridines, the dipolar non-centrosymmetric molecular tectons pave the way for the realization of non-centrosymmetric supramolecular assemblies because of the difference in the binding energy of the pyridyl nitrogen atoms.

Pd(II) Complexes with Pyridine Ligands: Substituent Effects on the NMR Data, Crystal Structures, and Catalytic Activity

A wide range of functionalized pyridine ligands have been employed to synthesize a variety of Pd(II) complexes of the general formulas [PdL₄](NO₃)₂ and [PdL₂Y₂], where L = 4-X-py and Y = Cl^– or NO₃^–. Their structures have been unambiguously established via analytical and spectroscopic methods in solution (NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) as well as in the solid state (X-ray diffraction). This in-depth characterization has shown that the functionalization of ligand molecules with groups of either electron-withdrawing or -donating nature (EWG and EDG) results in significant changes in the physicochemical properties of the desired coordination compounds. Downfield shifts of signals in the ¹H NMR spectra were observed upon coordination within and across the complex families, clearly indicating the relationship between NMR chemical shifts and the ligand basicity as estimated from pK_a values. A detailed crystallographic study has revealed the operation of a variety of weak interactions, which may be factors explaining aspects of the solution chemistry of the complexes. The Pd(II) complexes have been found to be efficient and versatile precatalysts in Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck cross-coupling reactions within a scope of structurally distinct substrates, and factors have been identified that have contributed to efficiency improvement in both processes.

Proof of Concept: Interface of Recyclable Organogels with Embedded Palladium Nanoparticles Catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling in Water at Room Temperature

A sustainable approach for C-C cross-coupling reaction at room temperature in water has been developed to avoid tedious Pd separation, reduce the carbon footprint, and save energy. Another important aspect is the catalyst recycling and easy product separation. α,γ-Hybrid peptides were designed to selectively use as a ligand for C-C cross-coupling catalysts as well as to form organogels. The peptides form antiparallel sheet-like structures in the solid state. The peptide containing m-aminobenzoic acid, glycine, and dimethylamine forms a whitish gel in toluene, and co-gelation with Pd(OAc)₂ results in light brown gel, which acts as a biphasic catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling at room temperature in water by mild shaking. The organic-inorganic hybrid gel was characterized by rheology, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analyses. On completion of the cross-coupling reaction, the basic aqueous layer (containing products) above the gel can be simply decanted and the intact organic-inorganic hybrid gel can be recycled by topping-up fresh reactants multiple times. The reaction permitted a range of different substitution patterns for aryl and heterocyclic halides with acid or phenol functional groups. Both electron-donating- and electron-withdrawing-substituted substrates exhibited good results for this transformation. The findings inspire toward a holistic green technology for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction and an innovative avenue for catalyst recycling and product isolation.

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Molecular Ruthenium Complexes with Polypyridyl Ligands

Two series of ruthenium complexes with various polypyridyl ligands have been prepared. One series of complexes (5 examples) are featured with tetradentate polypyridyl ligands and two acetonitrile molecules at the axial positions of the coordination sphere; the other series (3 examples) include combinations of a tridentate polypyridyl ligand, one 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or two picolines, and one acetonitrile ligand. All these complexes were fully characterized by their NMR spectra as well as X-ray single crystal structures. Their electronic absorption and redox data were measured and reported. Of the 8 complexes, three candidates effectively catalyze electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) in wet acetonitrile medium, generating CO as the major product. All these three catalytically active complexes contain a 2,2':6',2″:6″,2‴-quaterpyridine (qpy) ligand scaffold. A maximum turnover frequency (TOF max ) of > 1000 s -1 was achieved for the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction at a modest overpotential. On the basis of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical evidences, the CO 2 substrate was proposed to bind with the ruthenium center at the two-electron reduced state of the complex and then enter the catalytic cycle.

Charge Neutral [Cu2L2] and [Pd2L2] Metallocycles: Self-Assembly, Aggregation, and Catalysis

A range of morphologically distinct metallosupramolecular Cu(II) and Pd(II) complexes has been constructed, based on the tritopic ligand 1,1',1″-(benzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(4,4-dimethylpentane-1,3-dione) (H₃L). By control of the reaction conditions, it is possible to generate distinct coordination assemblies possessing either macrocyclic or polymeric structures and more importantly distinct activity in catalysis of the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling.

High-sorption terpyridine-graphene oxide hybrid for the efficient removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater

Pollution of wastewater with heavy metal-ions represents one of the most severe environmental problems associated with societal development. To overcome this issue, the design of new, highly efficient systems capable of removing such toxic species, hence to purify water, is of paramount importance for public health and environmental protection. In this work, novel sorption hybrid materials were developed to enable high-performance adsorption of heavy metal ions. Towards this end, graphene oxide (GO) exhibiting various C/O ratios has been functionalized with ad hoc receptors, i.e. terpyridine ligands. The maximum adsorption capacity of highly oxidized/terpyridine hybrids towards Ni(ii), Zn(ii) and Co(ii) was achieved at pH = 6 and 25 °C reaching values of 462, 421 and 336 mg g-1, respectively, being the highest reported in the literature for pristine GO and GO-based sorbents. Moreover, the uptake experiments showed that heavy metal ion adsorption on GO-Tpy and GOh-Tpy is strongly dependent on pH in the range from 2 to 10, as a result of the modulation of interactions at the supramolecular level. Moreover, the ionic strength was found to be independent of heavy metal ion adsorption on GO-Tpy and GOh-Tpy. Under ambient conditions, adsorption capacity values increase with the degree of oxidation of GO because dipolar oxygen units can both interact with heavy-metal ions via dipole-dipole and/or ionic interactions and enable bonding of more covalently anchored terpyridine units. Both adsorption isotherms and kinetics studies revealed that the uptake of the heavy metal ions occurs at a monolayer coverage, mostly controlled by the strong surface complexation with the oxygen of GO and nitrogen-containing groups of terpyridine. Furthermore, selectivity of the hybrid was confirmed by selective sorption of the above heavy metal ions from mixtures involving alkali (Na(i), K(i)) and alkaline Earth (Mg(ii), Ca(ii)) metal ions due to the chelating properties of the terpyridine subunits, as demonstrated with municipal drinking (tap) water samples. Our findings provide unambiguous evidence for the potential of chemical tailoring of GO-based materials with N-heterocyclic ligands as sorbent materials for highly efficient wastewater purification.

Au-Containing Coordination Polymers Based on Polyphosphorus Ligand Complexes

Whereas the self-assembly of pentaphosphaferrocenes [Cp^RFe(η⁵-P₅)] (Cp^R = Cp*, Cp^×, and Cp^Bn) with Cu and Ag salts has been well-studied in the past, the coordination chemistry toward Au complexes has been left untouched so far. Herein, the results of the self-assembly processes of [Cp^RFe(η⁵-P₅)] with Au salts of different anions (GaCl₄^-, SbF₆^-, and Al(OC(CF₃)₃)₄ (TEF^-)) are reported. Next to a variety of molecular coordination products, the first coordination polymers based on polyphosphorus ligand complexes and Au salts are also obtained. Thereby, a 2D coordination polymer comprising metal vacancies is isolated. In all products, the Au centers are coordinated in a linear or a trigonal planar environment. In solution, highly dynamic processes are observed. Variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction were applied to gain further insight into selected coordination compounds.

Visible-Light-Induced Amination of Quinoline at the C8 Position via a Postcoordinated Interligand-Coupling Strategy under Mild Conditions

The postcoordinated interligand-coupling strategy provides a useful and complementary protocol for synthesizing polydentate ligands. Herein, diastereoselective photoreactions of Λ-[Ir(pq)₂(d-AA)] (Λ-d) and Λ-[Ir(pq)₂(l-AA)] (Λ-l, where pq is 2-phenylquinoline and AA is an amino acid) are reported in the presence of O₂ under mild conditions. Diastereomer Λ-d is dehydrogenatively oxidized into an imino acid complex, while diastereomer Λ-l mainly occurs via interligand C-N cross-dehydrogenative coupling between quinoline at the C8 position and AA ligands at room temperature, affording Λ-[Ir(pq)(l-pq-AA)]. Furthermore, the photoreaction of diastereomer Λ-l is temperature-dependent. Mechanistic experiments reveal the ligand-radical intermediates may be involved in the reaction. Density functional theory calculations were used to eluciate the origin of diastereoselectivity and temperature dependence. This will provide a new protocol for the amination of quinoline at the C8 position via the postcoordinated interligand C-N cross-coupling strategy under mild conditions.

Halogen-bonded one-dimensional chains of functionalized ditopic bipyridines co-crystallized with mono-, di-, and triiodofluorobenzenes

A series of halogen-bonded (XB) 1D and zigzag supramolecular architectures involving a sterically hindered class of homologous para-xylenes bearing bipyridyl moieties at peripheries co-crystallized with mono-, di-, and triiodofluorobenzenes as XB donors are prepared.

Bimetallic cyclometalated iridium complexes bridged by a BODIPY linker

Presented here is a new class of supramolecular cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes. The 2 : 1 assemblies include two phosphorescent cyclometalated Ir(iii) centers spanned by a BODIPY bridge with pyridine substituents at the β-pyrrole positions. The three complexes, which vary with respect to the cyclometalating ligand on iridium, are prepared via a simple one-pot procedure, with the target complexes isolated in 31-75% yield. The photophysics of these new compounds are described in detail. All complexes are strongly photoluminescent, with fluorescence from BODIPY being the dominant emission pathway. One member of the series has a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, significantly enhanced relative to the free BODIPY. The cyclometalating ligand on iridium controls the energy of the Ir-centered triplet excited state, but in all cases energy transfer from the Ir centers to the BODIPY quenches almost all phosphorescence. This work outlines a new, simple synthetic method for accessing supramolecular complexes.

Intrinsic Effect of Pyridine-N-Position on Structural Properties of Cu-Based Low-Dimensional Coordination Frameworks

Metal-organic assemblies have received significant attention for catalytic and other applications, including gas and energy storage, due to their porosity and thermal/chemical stability. Here, we report the synthesis and physicochemical characterization of three metallosupramolecular assemblies consisting of isomeric ambidentate pyridyl-β-diketonate ligands L1–L3 and Cu(II) metal ions. It has been demonstrated that the topology and dimensionality of generated supramolecular aggregates depend on the location of the pyridine nitrogen donor atom in L1–L3. This is seen in characterization of two distinct 2D polymeric assemblies, i.e., [Cu(L1)₂]_n and [Cu(L2)₂]_n, in which both β-diketonate and pyridine groups are coordinated to the Cu(II) center, as well as in characterization of the mononuclear 1D complex Cu(L3)₂, in which the central atom is bound only by two β-diketonate units.

Dynamer and Metallodynamer Interconversion: An Alternative View to Metal Ion Complexation

A bifunctional molecule containing both a bidentate binding site for metal ions and an aminopyrimidine H-bond donor-acceptor site has been synthesized, and its properties, in its free and coordinated forms, have been established in solution and in the solid state by analytical and spectroscopic methods as well as by X-ray structure determinations. Structural characterization has shown that it forms a one-dimensional H-bonded polymeric assembly in the solid state, while spectroscopic measurements indicate that it also aggregates in solution. The reaction of a simple Fe(II) salt with this assembly results in the emergence of two geometrical isomers of the complex: [FeL₃](BF4)₂·9H₂O-C1 (meridional, mer) and [FeL₃]₂(SiF₆)(BF₄)₂·12H₂O-C2 (facial, fac). While, complex C1 in the solid state generates a one-dimensional H-bonded polymer involving just two ligands on each Fe center, with the chirality of the complex units alternating along the polymer chain, the structure of complex C2 shows NH···N interactions seen in both the ligand and mer complex (C1) structures to be completely absent. Physicochemical properties of the free and complexed ligand differ substantially.

Synthesis of Bi-, Ter-, and Quaterpyridinecarboxylates via Propargylisoxazole-Pyridine Rearrangement

A flexible method was developed for the synthesis of 2,2'-bi-, 2,2':6',2″-ter-, and 2,2':6',2'':6'',2‴-quaterpyridines containing a nicotinic acid moiety. The approach involves the Fe(II)/Au(I)-catalyzed rearrangement of key 4-propargylisoxazole building blocks bearing a pyrid-2-yl or quinolin-2-yl substituent at the 3-position and Pd(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

Isolation and characterization of a lithiated pyridine - aggregation in the solid state and in solution

Pyridyllithiums are ubiquitous intermediates used for the electrophilic functionalization of pyridines. In this work, the isolation of a pyridyllithium is reported. Single crystal XRD revealed a dimer in the solid state. In THF solution it was identified as a monomer using DOSY NMR spectroscopy. Calculations showed that the pyridyllithium is a very electron rich pyridine superbase, which may account for its high reactivity.

Molecular quaterpyridine-based metal complexes for small molecule activation: water splitting and CO2 reduction

This tutorial describes recent developments in the use of metal quaterpyridine complexes as electrocatalysts and photocatalysts for water splitting and CO₂ reduction.

Cross-π-conjugated enediyne with multitopic metal binding sites

The synthesis of an enediyne molecule functionlized with different metal coordination sites in a cross-π-conjugated fashion is reported. Using Pd-mediated cross-coupling reactions, 2,2′-bipyridine units were attached at the periphery of diazafluorenemethylidene to obtain a multitopic ligand. UV-vis spectrosopic investigations along with electrochemical analyses reveal electronic communication along the conjugated path reflected in red-shifted absorption spectra and shifts of reduction potentials. The properties of the ligand could be manipulated by coordinating [Ru(bpy)₂]²⁺ fragments at all three coordination spheres of the molecule while the different complexing imine moieties serve as possible coordination sites for various metal centres.

Synthesis and structural characterization of a geminal enediyne molecule with three imine metal binding sites based on diazafluorenemethylidene in a cross-π-conjugated fashion is reported.

New Artificial Biomimetic Enzyme Analogues based on Iron(II/III) Schiff Base Complexes: An Effect of (Benz)imidazole Organic Moieties on Phenoxazinone Synthase and DNA Recognition

Elucidation of the structure and function of biomolecules provides us knowledge that can be transferred into the generation of new materials and eventually applications in e.g., catalysis or bioassays. The main problems, however, concern the complexity of the natural systems and their limited availability, which necessitates utilization of simple biomimetic analogues that are, to a certain degree, similar in terms of structure and thus behaviour. We have, therefore, devised a small library of six tridentate N-heterocyclic coordinating agents (L¹-L⁶), which, upon complexation, form two groups of artificial, monometallic non-heme iron species. Utilization of iron(III) chloride leads to the formation of the 1:1 (Fe:L_n) 'open' complexes, whereas iron(II) trifluoromethanosulfonate allows for the synthesis of 1:2 (M:L_n) 'closed' systems. The structural differences between the individual complexes are a result of the information encoded within the metallic centre and the chosen counterion, whereas the organic scaffold influences the observed properties. Indeed, the number and nature of the external hydrogen bond donors coming from the presence of (benz)imidazole moieties in the ligand framework are responsible for the observed biological behaviour in terms of mimicking phenoxazinone synthase activity and interaction with DNA.

Palladium(II)-Based Self-Assembled Heteroleptic Coordination Architectures: A Growing Family

Metal-driven self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to lucidly design a large range of discrete 2D and 3D coordination architectures/complexes. Palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination architectures are usually prepared by using suitable metal components, in either a partially protected form (PdL') or typical form (Pd; charges are not shown), and designed ligand components. The self-assembled molecules prepared by using a metal component and only one type of bi- or polydentate ligand (L) can be classified in the homoleptic series of complexes. On the other hand, the less explored heteroleptic series of complexes are obtained by using a metal component and at least two different types of non-chelating bi- or polydentate ligands (such as L^a and L^b ). Methods that allow the controlled generation of single, discrete heteroleptic complexes are less understood. A survey of palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination cages that are heteroleptic has been made. This review article illustrates a systematic collection of such architectures and credible justification of their formation, along with reported functional aspects of the complexes. The collected heteroleptic assemblies are classified here into three sections: 1) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal; 2) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is different; and 3) [Pd_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal. Representative examples of some important homoleptic architectures are also provided, wherever possible, to set a background for a better understanding of the related heteroleptic versions. The purpose of this review is to pave the way for the construction of several unique heteroleptic coordination assemblies that might exhibit emergent supramolecular functions.

DFT Study of the CNS Ligand Effect on the Geometry, Spin-State, and Absorption Spectrum in Ruthenium, Iron, and Cobalt Quaterpyridine Complexes

Geometry parameters, total energy of the system in different spin states, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and absorption spectra were computed for a range of mononuclear quaterpyridine Ru(II), Fe(III/II), and Co(III/II) complexes with two axial ambidentate CNS ligands by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Both structural and electronic properties were found to be correlating with the type of the binding atom in the CNS ligand (isomerization differs by 4-13 kcal·mol-1). The N-bonding of CNS ligands is energetically favored. It was also found that the low spin (LS) state is the ground state for both Ru(II) and Co(III) complexes regardless of the CNS arrangement. The other complexes are the high-spin (HS) ground-state ones with the only exception of the S-bonded CNS isomer of the Fe(III) complex. The dependencies of energy differences between the HS and LS states versus C demonstrated stabilization of the HS state with an increasing amount of the exact exchange admixture (C) for iron and cobalt complexes. An opposite behavior was observed for ruthenium complexes. The best match in harmonic vibrational frequencies between the experimental and calculated values has been reached at C = 0.15 for all the complexes. The absorption profile of the Fe(II) complex with the alternatively bonded CNS ligands strongly depends on the angle between them. The light-harvesting efficiency of the Fe(II) complexes is very similar (∼0.4) and sufficiently close to that of the Ru(II) complexes. The iron-based coordination compounds are considered as a prospective dye for dye-sensitized solar cells. The results of calculations were completed with experimental reference data, thus providing a systematic compendium for practical use.

The first example of an asymmetrical μ-oxo bridged dinuclear iron complex with a terpyridine ligand

The reaction of Fe(iii) ions with a terpyridine ligand L in the presence of chlorides and independent of conditions results in the formation of μ-oxo bridged dinuclear [FeLCl(μ-O)FeCl₃] and the mononuclear complex [FeLCl₂].

Metallo-supramolecular assembly of protic pincer-type complexes: encapsulation of dinitrogen and carbon disulfide into a multiproton-responsive diruthenium cage

A protic pincer complex and rigid diphosphine linker formed a cage, which incorporated N₂ and CS₂ into the multiproton-responsive cavity.

Air- and Light-Stable P4 and As4 within an Anion-Coordination-Based Tetrahedral Cage

In contrast to the stable dinitrogen molecule, white phosphorus (P₄) and yellow arsenic (As₄) are very reactive allotropic modifications of these two heavier pnictogen elements, which has greatly hampered the study of their properties and applications. Thus, the safe storage and transport of them is imperative. Supramolecular caged structures are one of the most efficient approaches for the encapsulation and stabilization of reactive species; however, their use in the P₄ and As₄ chemistry is very rare. In the current work, we demonstrate a new design strategy for constructing finite cages and including guests based on anion coordination chemistry. The phosphate-coordination-based tetrahedral cages can readily accommodate the tetrahedral guests P₄ and As₄, which is facilitated by the shape and size complementarity as well as favorable σ-π and lone-pair-π interactions. Moreover, the latter case represents the first example of As₄ inclusion in a well-defined tetrahedral cage.
