Green and Moderate Activation of Coal Fly Ash and Its Application in Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Recycling of manganese ore desulfurization slag for preparation of low-temperature NH3-SCR catalyst with good scale-up production performance

Considering the synergistic carbon/pollution reduction and resource utilization, this study proposes recycling of manganese desulfurization slag to prepare low-temperature NH3 -SCR catalyst based on solid-state ion-exchange. The desulfurization slag was hydrothermally treated to be support under mild conditions, with the parent manganese oxide ore serving as active component. Hydrothermal treatment with a desulfurization slag to NaOH mass ratio of 1.0, at 100 °C for 10 h were actually cost-effective conditions for DS recycling. The catalyst with 13.6 wt% of Mn and activated at 450 °C for 2 h in air (MO3/DSH-450 -2) performed the best, with a NO conversion of 86.9% at 150 °C and 10000 h-1, and up to 92.6% at 175 °C. Hydrothermal treatment of DS, SSIE and calcination activation resulting in a rich surface acidity and lattice oxygen of MO3/DSH, coupled with better chemical state distribution of active metal sites, promoting the NH3 -SCR activity. The scale-up produced MO3/DSH-G maintained 90.4% NOx conversion at 175 °C, showing good robustness, flexibility, and better sulfur/water resistance. The development of MO3/DSH catalyst may make full use of natural manganese ore, is a typical coupling strategy for carbon-pollutant synergistic emission reduction and resource fully utilize.

Unraveling the multi-pollutant removal using M-MoWTi (M = Fe, Mn, Cr) catalyst: experiment and mechanistic study of competition for active sites

Multi-pollutant removal (MPR) of NO and VOCs simultaneously is efficient of flue gas treatment in coal-fired power plants. But reducing the competition for active sites between NH3, NO, C6H6, and C7H8 remains challenging. Herein, Cr, Mn, and Fe were respectively doped to MoWTi catalyst via wet impregnation. The Fe3+ + Mo5+ ↔ Fe2+ + Mo6+ redox cycle led to an increased proportion of low valence ions (Mo5+ and W5+) and facilitated the creation of active oxygen vacancies with several active sites. It also possessed plentiful mild to strong acid sites with ideal ratio. These factors enhanced catalytic activity of Fe-MoWTi. Remarkable MPR efficiencies of NO, C6H6, and C7H8 were achieved under industrial SCR condition, characterized by low oxygen but high SO2 levels at 340 °C, with removal rates reaching 89.85%, 97.57%, and 86.30% respectively. Theory calculations further revealed that Fe-MoWTi favor NH3 and O2 adsorptions. NO elimination was found to follow both Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) processes, supported by in situ DRIFTS analysis. The reactions involving NO/NO2/nitrite/nitrate occurred with NH3(ads)/ NH4+(ads)/NH2 (ads). C6H6 and C7H8 underwent gradual oxidation, formatting alcohols, aldehydes, acids, and maleic acids, before eventually being mineralized to gaseous CO2 and H2O. Findings hold significant potential for application, providing guidance for the development of catalysts with improved resistance against SO2 poisoning and enhanced MPR capabilities.

Plants' emission behaviors under dual control of pollutant concentration and quantity

Quantity-based and concentration-based limits are two common environmental permitting approaches utilized by government worldwide in environmental management. While existing literature is still unambiguous about roles played by quantity-based versus concentration-based limits in environmental management, it becomes evident that relying exclusively on concentration-based or quantity-based limits to control plant emissions may not necessarily result in improved environmental quality. This paper leverages a unique opportunity arising from a recent reform in China's Pollutant Emission Permit System (PEPS) initiated in 2016 to analyze how the introduction of quantity-based limits in addition to concentration-based limits through the PEPS reform impact emissions at the plant level. Utilizing a unique plant-level continuous emission monitoring system data collected from Shaanxi Province (located in western China), the paper finds a significant reduction in air pollutant emissions as a result of the PEPS reform (nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 39%, sulfur dioxide (SO2) by 15% and particulate matter (PM) by 13%). The heterogeneity analyses show emission reductions in plants differ across those with varying quantity limits specified in their permits, distinct emission ratios and diverse ownership structures. Furthermore, plants that fall under the classified management system with more stringent regulations imposed, especially those operating in high-pollution sectors, situated within industrial parks, or classified as large-sized plants, attain higher pollutant quantity limits. Findings of the paper carry important implications for effective environmental management, particularly within developing countries, and shed some light on carbon emission reduction policies in China.
