Atomically Dispersed Manganese on Biochar Derived from a Hyperaccumulator for Photocatalysis in Organic Pollution Remediation

Co-utilization of wastewater sludge and heavy metals for single-atom electrocatalytic reduction of gaseous CO2

Synergetic management of waste activated sludge, heavy metals (HMs) and CO2 for their valorization and cyclic utilization is rarely reported. Herein, we employed sludge-derived extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and HMs in wastewater to fabricate a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) for electrochemical CO2 reduction. This approach atomically dispersed Ni at each nanofiber of the GDE. Abundant N element in the EPS proved to play a key role in the formation of Nx-Ni (mixture of N3-Ni and N4-Ni) sites for highly efficient CO2 to CO conversion. The atomical Ni3+ shows high catalytic activity. Direct gaseous CO2 reduction in a membrane electrode assembly generated a current density up to 50 mA·cm-2 with CO:H2 ratio of ∼100 and ∼75% FECO under 2.69 cell voltage. This strategy takes advantage of all waste streams generated on site and consolidates traditionally separated treatment processes to save costs, produces value-added products and generates carbon benefits during wastewater treatment.

Facilely tuning the coating layers of Fe nanoparticles from iron carbide to iron nitride for different performance in Fenton-like reactions

In this study, a series of Fe-based materials are facilely synthesized using MIL-88A and melamine as precursors. Changing the mass ratio of melamine and MIL-88A could tune the coating layers of generated zero-valent iron (Fe0) particles from Fe3C to Fe3N facilely. Compared to Fe/Fe3N@NC sample, Fe/Fe3C@NC exhibits better catalytic activity and stability to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidant. Free radical quenching tests, open-circuit potential (OCP) test and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra (EPR) prove that hydroxyl radicals (OH) and superoxide radical (O2-) are dominant reactive oxygen species (ROSs) with Fe/Fe3C@NC sample. For Fe/Fe3N@NC sample, the main ROSs are changed into sulfate radicals (SO4-) and high valent iron-oxo (Fe (IV)=O) species. In addition, the better conductivity of Fe3C is beneficial for the electron transfer from Fe0 to the Fe3C, thus could keep the activity of the surface sites and obtain better stability. DFT calculation reveals the better adsorption and activation ability of Fe3C than Fe3N. Moreover, PMS can also be adsorbed on the Fe sites of Fe3N with shorter FeO bonds and longer SO bonds than on Fe3C, the Fe (IV)=O is thus present in the Fe/Fe3N@NC/PMS system. This study provides a novel strategy for the development of highly active Fe-based materials for Fenton-like reactions and thus could promote their real application.

Enhancing Cr (VI) Adsorption of Chestnut Shell Biochar through H3PO4 Activation and Nickel Doping

A high-efficiency nickel-doped porous biochar (PCNi3) has been successfully synthesized from chestnut shell waste via a two-step chemical activation treatment with H3PO4. The influences of microstructure, surface morphology, elemental composition, surface functional groups, specific surface area, porosity, pore-size distribution, and chemical properties of the surface state on the removal of Cr (VI) from water were thoroughly investigated by using XRD, FESEM, FTIR, Raman, BET, and XPS testing methods, N2 adsorption, and XPS testing techniques respectively. The results indicate that the treatment of H3PO4 activation and nickel doping can effectively improve microstructure characteristics, thus promoting Cr (VI) adsorption capacity. The effects of initial solution pH, solution concentration, time, and temperature on remediation are revealed. The Cr (VI) uptake experiments imply that the adsorption curves of PCNi3 fit well with the Freundlich model, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the Elovich model. The adsorption process of PCNi3 can be regarded as a spontaneous endothermic reaction limited by diffusion among particles and porosity. The adsorption mechanisms of PCNi3 are ion exchange, complexation, electrostatic adsorption, and coprecipitation with the assistance of surface active sites, porosity, Ni0 particles, and Ni7P3. With these advantages, PCNi3 reveals an extraordinary Cr (VI) removal capacity and a strong ability to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III).

Noble-Metal-Free Single- and Dual-Atom Catalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis

Artificial photosynthesis enables direct solar-to-chemical energy conversion aimed at mitigating environmental pollution and producing solar fuels and chemicals in a green and sustainable approach, and efficient, robust, and low-cost photocatalysts are the heart of artificial photosynthesis systems. As an emerging new class of cocatalytic materials, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have received a great deal of current attention due to their maximal atom utilization and unique photocatalytic properties, whereas noble-metal-free ones impart abundance, availability, and cost-effectiveness allowing for scalable implementation. This review outlines the fundamental principles and synthetic methods of SACs and DACs and summarizes the most recent advances in SACs (Co, Fe, Cu, Ni, Bi, Al, Sn, Er, La, Ba, etc.) and DACs (CuNi, FeCo, InCu, KNa, CoCo, CuCu, etc.) based on non-noble metals, confined on an arsenal of organic or inorganic substrates (polymeric carbon nitride, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, carbon, etc.) acting as versatile scaffolds in solar-light-driven photocatalytic reactions, including hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, methane conversion, organic synthesis, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide production, and environmental remediation. The review concludes with the challenges, opportunities, and future prospects of noble-metal-free SACs and DACs for artificial photosynthesis.

Photocatalytic activation of sulfite by maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) for iohexol degradation and alleviation effect of HCO3- on water acidification

Photo-catalyzing sulfite (S(IV)) for the generation of sulfate radical (SO4•-) has emerged as a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) recently. However, both the potential of soil minerals as effective photocatalysts and the process of water acidification due to S(IV) oxidation have been overlooked. Herein, maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), a typical soil iron oxide with excellent photocatalytic reactivity like hematite and magnetic-collectible property like magnetite, was successfully used to activate S(IV) for iohexol degradation under visible light irradiation. As a result, 91.3% of iohexol was eliminated within 15 min at 0.1 g/L maghemite and 0.5 mM S(IV) under neutral conditions. The influencing factors, including initial pH, catalyst dosage, S(IV) amount, co-existing substances and water matrix, were systematically investigated. The maghemite/S(IV)/vis system exhibited superior performance in iohexol degradation at a wide pH range (3-10). It was found that the released proton via S(IV) oxidation led to severe water acidification. Interestingly, a low dose of HCO3- could evidently resist water acidification with little influence on iohexol elimination. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis confirmed that SO4•-, •OH and •O2- were involved in iohexol abatement with SO4•- being the dominant reactive species. Compared with hydrogen peroxide, persulfate and peroxymonosulfate, the established maghemite/S(IV)/vis system achieved much more remarkable degradation performance. Furthermore, the reactivity of the catalyst was not obviously reduced even after 10 runs of reaction. This study expands the application of soil iron oxide mineral in S(IV) activation in water treatment and proposes an approach to regulate water acidification in S(IV)-based AOP.

Paint sludge derived activated carbon encapsulating with cobalt nanoparticles for non-radical activation of peroxymonosulfate

Industrial solid waste management and recycling are important to environmental sustainability. In this study, cobalt (Co) nanoparticles encapsulated in paint sludge-derived activated carbon (AC) were fabricated. The Co-AC possessed high conductivity, magnetic properties and abundant metal oxide impurities (TiAlSiOx), which was applied as multifunctional catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Compared to pure AC, the Co-AC exhibited significant enhanced performance for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) via PMS activation. Mechanism studies by in situ Raman spectroscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance suggested that surface-bonded PMS (PMS*) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are the dominant reactive species for TCH oxidation. The non-radical species can efficiently oxidize electron-rich pollutants with high efficiency, which minimized the consumption of PMS and the catalyst. The removal percentages of TCH reached 97 % within 5 min and ∼ 99 % within 15 min in the Co-AC/PMS system. The Co active sites facilitated PMS adsorption to form the PMS* and the TiAlSiOx impurities provided abundant oxygen vacancy for generation of the 1O2. In addition, the Co-AC/PMS system achieved high efficiency and stability for oxidation of the target pollutants over a long-term continuous operation. This work not only offers a cost-effective approach for recycling industrial waste but also provides new insights into the application of waste-derived catalyst for environmental remediation.

Understanding the Distance Effect of the Single-Atom Active Sites in Fenton-Like Reactions for Efficient Water Remediation

Emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising in water remediation through Fenton-like reactions. Despite the notable enhancement of catalytic activity through increasing the density of single-atom active sites, the performance improvement is not solely attributed to the increase in the number of active sites. The variation of catalytic behaviors stemming from the increased atomic density is particularly elusive and deserves an in-depth study. Herein, single-atom Fe catalysts (FeSA-CN) with different distances (dsite) between the adjacent single-atom Fe sites are constructed by controlling Fe loading. With the decrease in dsite value, remarkably enhanced catalytic activity of FeSA-CN is realized via the electron transfer regime with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The decrease in dsite value promotes electronic communication and further alters the electronic structure in favor of PMS activation. Moreover, the two adjacent single-atom Fe sites collectively adsorb PMS and achieve single-site desorption of the PMS decomposition products, maintaining continuous PMS activation and contaminant removal. Moreover, the FeSA-CN/PMS system exhibits excellent anti-interference performance for various aquatic systems and good durability in continuous-flow experiments, indicating its great potential for water treatment applications. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the distance effect of single-atom active sites on water remediation by designing densely populated SACs.

Electronic configuration regulation of single-atomic Mn sites mediated by Mo/Mn clusters for an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Tuning the electron distribution of metal single-atom active sites via bimetallic clusters is an effective way to enhance their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, but remains a great challenge. A biochar-based electrocatalyst (BCMoMn800-2) with both MnN4 active sites and Mo2C/Mn7C3 clusters was synthesized using in situ enriched Mo/Mn biomass as a precursor to trigger the HER. Various characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results indicated that the presence of Mo2C/Mn7C3 clusters in BCMoMn800-2 effectively induced the redistribution of charges at MnN4 sites, reducing the energy of H* activation during the HER. In 0.5 M H2SO4, the overpotential was 27.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and the Tafel slope was 31 mV dec-1, and its electrocatalytic performance was close to that of Pt/C. The electrocatalyst also exhibited excellent electrocatalytic stability and durability. This work might provide a new strategy for solid waste recycling and constructing efficient HER electrocatalysts.

Targeted Delivery of Active Sites by Oxygen Vacancy-Engineered Bimetal Silicate Nanozymes for Intratumoral Aggregation-Potentiated Catalytic Therapy

Biodegradable silicate nanoconstructs have aroused tremendous interest in cancer therapeutics due to their variable framework composition and versatile functions. Nevertheless, low intratumoral retention still limits their practical application. In this study, oxygen vacancy (OV)-enriched bimetallic silicate nanozymes with Fe-Ca dual active sites via modification of oxidized sodium alginate and gallic acid (GA) loading (OFeCaSA-V@GA) were developed for targeted aggregation-potentiated therapy. The band gap of silica markedly decreased from 2.76 to 1.81 eV by codoping of Fe3+ and Ca2+, enabling its excitation by a 650 nm laser to generate reactive oxygen species. The OV that occurred in the hydrothermal synthetic stage of OFeCaSA-V@GA can anchor the metal ions to form an atomic phase, offering a massive fabrication method of single-atom nanozymes. Density functional theory results reveal that the Ca sites can promote the adsorption of H2O2, and Fe sites can accelerate the dissociation of H2O2, thereby realizing a synergetic catalytic effect. More importantly, the targeted delivery of metal ions can induce a morphological transformation at tumor sites, leading to high retention (the highest retention rate is 36.3%) of theranostic components in tumor cells. Thus, this finding may offer an ingenious protocol for designing and engineering highly efficient and long-retention nanodrugs.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by Fe-Mn Co-doped biochar for carbamazepine degradation

Antibiotics in aquatic environments present a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. Activation of carbon-catalyzed persulfate is a prospective approach for oxidizing antibiotics. There is a pressing need for inexpensive carbon catalysts of high quality. In this study, biochar (BC) modified by Fe, Mn and Fe@Mn was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) in water. The surface of Fe@Mn BC had a dense, stalactite-like morphology comprising a square chassis that was elliptical. The catalyst Fe@Mn-BC possessed the optimal degradation effect (99%) on CBZ at 100 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the quenching spectrum suggested that ˙O2- and 1O2 contributed to CBZ degradation.

Electrons of d-orbital (Mn) and p-orbital (N) enhance the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics by biochar while maintaining biocompatibility: A combined chemical and biological analysis

Photocatalytic oxidation technology holds promise for ideal advanced treatment of antibiotic wastewater. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are a new hotspot in catalytic science, but the photochemical studies on the removal of antibiotics from water and biocompatibility after entering the environment are scarce. In this work, we prepared a single Mn atom immobilized on N-doped biochar (Mn@N-Biochar) by impregnation calcination method for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of sulfanilamide (SNM) in different types of various water systems. Compared with the original biochar, Mn@N-Biochar showed enhanced SNM degradation and TOC removal capacity. DFT calculation concluded that the electrons of d-orbital (Mn) and p-orbital (N) altered the electronic structure of biochar and enhanced the photoelectric performance. It was shown that Mn@N-Biochar caused negligible systemic inflammation and tissue damage when given orally in mice, and also did not alter cell death and ROS production in human lung, kidney, and liver cells, as compared with biochar. We are convinced that Mn@N-Biochar could enhance the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics while maintaining biocompatibility, which could be a promising strategy for wastewater treatment.

Regulating the electronic structure through charge redistribution in dense single-atom catalysts for enhanced alkene epoxidation

Inter-site interaction in densely populated single-atom catalysts has been demonstrated to have a crucial role in regulating the electronic structure of metal atoms, and consequently their catalytic performances. We herein report a general and facile strategy for the synthesis of several densely populated single-atom catalysts. Taking cobalt as an example, we further produce a series of Co single-atom catalysts with varying loadings to investigate the influence of density on regulating the electronic structure and catalytic performance in alkene epoxidation with O₂. Interestingly, the turnover frequency and mass-specific activity are significantly enhanced by 10 times and 30 times with increasing Co loading from 5.4 wt% to 21.2 wt% in trans-stilbene epoxidation, respectively. Further theoretical studies reveal that the electronic structure of densely populated Co atoms is altered through charge redistribution, resulting in less Bader charger and higher d-band center, which are demonstrated to be more beneficial for the activation of O₂ and trans-stilbene. The present study demonstrates a new finding about the site interaction in densely populated single-atom catalysts, shedding insight on how density affects the electronic structure and catalytic performance for alkene epoxidation.

Hydroxyl-/Carboxyl-Rich Graphitic Carbon Nitride/Graphene Oxide Composites for Efficient Photodegradation of Reactive Red 195 and Antibacterial Applications

In this work, a protonated graphitic carbon nitride (P-g-C₃N₄)-coated graphene oxide (GO) composite (GO/P-g-C₃N₄) was prepared via wet-chemistry exfoliation, followed by a freeze-drying process. The GO/P-g-C₃N₄ composite was found to have an outstanding photodegradation performance effect on the reactive red 195 (RR195) dye and very strong antibacterial properties. Both the GO structure and the dispersed state of P-g-C₃N₄ were found to play a significant role in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of GO/P-g-C₃N₄. The GO/P-g-C₃N₄ obtained via freeze-drying retained a large number of oxygen-containing groups and showed higher catalytic activity and reusability than the reduced GO (rGO)/g-C₃N₄ obtained via thermal reduction. Characterization of the samples indicates that GO/P-g-C₃N₄ has a higher specific surface area and photocurrent density than rGO/g-C₃N₄; it is likely that these properties lead to the superior photocatalytic activity observed in GO/P-g-C₃N₄. Adsorption energy calculations indicate that O₂ can be readily adsorbed onto the GO surface, which results in stronger oxidizing superoxide anion radicals (^•O₂^-) and holes (h⁺); these active radicals can rapidly degrade RR195 dyes. Moreover, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity (demonstrated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) was observed in the case of the GO/P-g-C₃N₄ composite irradiated with visible light. This work offers new insights into the design of cost-effective g-C₃N₄-based photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Single atom Mn anchored on N-doped porous carbon derived from spirulina for catalyzed peroxymonosulfate to degradation of emerging organic pollutants

Highly efficient single atom catalysts are critical to substantially promote for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to organic pollutant degradation, but it remains a challenge at present. Herein, single atom Mn anchored on N-doped porous carbon (SA-Mn-NSC) was synthesized by ball milling of Mn-doped carbon nitride and spirulina biochar to dominantly activate PMS. The precursor of carbon nitride and spirulina possessed a strong coordinating capability for Mn(II), facilitating the formation of highly dispersed nitrogen-coordinated Mn sites (Mn-N₄). The SA-Mn-NSC catalyst exhibited high activity and stability in the heterogeneous activation of PMS to degrade a wide range of pollutants within 10 min, showing an outstanding degradation rate constant of 0.31 min^-1 in enrofloxacin (ENR) degradation. The high surface density of Mn-N₄ sites and abundant interconnected meso-macro pores were highly favorable for activating PMS to produce ¹O₂ and high-valent manganese (Mn(IV)) for pollutant degradation. This work offers a new pathway of using a low-cost and easily accessible single-atom catalysts (SACs) and could inspire more catalytic oxidation strategies.

Single-atom site catalysts for environmental remediation: Recent advances

Single-atom site catalysts (SACs) can maximize the utilization of active metal species and provide an attractive way to regulate the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions. The adjustable coordination configuration and atomic structure of SACs enable them to be an ideal candidate for revealing reaction mechanisms in various catalytic processes. The minimum use of metals and relatively tight anchoring of the metal atoms significantly reduce leaching and environmental risks. Additionally, the unique physicochemical properties of single atom sites endow SACs with superior activity in various catalytic processes for environmental remediation (ER). Generally, SACs are burgeoning and promising materials in the application of ER. However, a systematic and critical review on the mechanism and broad application of SACs-based ER is lacking. Herein, we review emerging studies applying SACs for different ERs, such as eliminating organic pollutants in water, removing volatile organic compounds, purifying automobile exhaust, and others (hydrodefluorination and disinfection). We have summarized the synthesis, characterization, reaction mechanism and structural-function relationship of SACs in ER. In addition, the perspectives and challenges of SACs for ER are also analyzed. We expect that this review can provide constructive inspiration for discoveries and applications of SACs in environmental catalysis in the future.
