Haze Air Pollution Health Impacts of Breath-Borne VOCs

A new ChatGPT-empowered, easy-to-use machine learning paradigm for environmental science

The quantity and complexity of environmental data show exponential growth in recent years. High-quality big data analysis is critical for performing a sophisticated characterization of the complex network of environmental pollution. Machine learning (ML) has been employed as a powerful tool for decoupling the complexities of environmental big data based on its remarkable fitting ability. Yet, due to the knowledge gap across different subjects, ML concepts and algorithms have not been well-popularized among researchers in environmental sustainability. In this context, we introduce a new research paradigm-"ChatGPT + ML + Environment", providing an unprecedented chance for environmental researchers to reduce the difficulty of using ML models. For instance, each step involved in applying ML models to environmental sustainability, including data preparation, model selection and construction, model training and evaluation, and hyper-parameter optimization, can be easily performed with guidance from ChatGPT. We also discuss the challenges and limitations of using this research paradigm in the field of environmental sustainability. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of "secondary training" for future application of "ChatGPT + ML + Environment".

Efficient Catalytic Elimination of Toxic Volatile Organic Compounds via Advanced Oxidation Process Wet Scrubbing with Bifunctional Cobalt Sulfide/Activated Carbon Catalysts

Advanced oxidation process (AOP) wet scrubber is a powerful and clean technology for organic pollutant treatment but still presents great challenges in removing the highly toxic and hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, we elaborately designed a bifunctional cobalt sulfide (CoS2)/activated carbon (AC) catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient toxic VOC removal in an AOP wet scrubber. By combining the excellent VOC adsorption capacity of AC with the highly efficient PMS activation activity of CoS2, CoS2/AC can rapidly capture VOCs from the gas phase to proceed with the SO4•- and HO• radical-induced oxidation reaction. More than 90% of aromatic VOCs were removed over a wide pH range (3-11) with low Co ion leaching (0.19 mg/L). The electron-rich sulfur vacancies and low-valence Co species were the main active sites for PMS activation. SO4•- was mainly responsible for the initial oxidation of VOCs, while HO• and O2 acted in the subsequent ring-opening and mineralization processes of intermediates. No gaseous intermediates from VOC oxidation were detected, and the highly toxic liquid intermediates like benzene were also greatly decreased, thus effectively reducing the health toxicity associated with byproduct emissions. This work provided a comprehensive understanding of the deep oxidation of VOCs via AOP wet scrubber, significantly accelerating its application in environmental remediation.

Real-Time Monitoring of Air Pollution Health Impacts Using Breath-Borne Gaseous Biomarkers from Rats

Offline techniques are adopted for studying air pollution health impacts, thus failing to provide in situ observations. Here, we have demonstrated their real-time monitoring by online analyzing an array of gaseous biomarkers from rats' exhaled breath using an integrated exhaled breath array sensor (IEBAS) developed. The biomarkers include total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), CO2, CO, NO, H2S, H2O2, O2, and NH3. Specific breath-borne VOCs were also analyzed by a gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometer (GC-IMS). After real-life ambient air pollution exposures (2 h), the pollution levels of PM2.5 and O3 were both found to significantly affect the relative levels of multiple gaseous biomarkers in rats' breath. Eleven biomarkers, especially NO, H2S, and 1-propanol, were detected as significantly correlated with PM2.5 concentration, while heptanal was shown to be significantly correlated with O3. Likewise, significant changes were also detected in multiple breath-borne biomarkers from rats under lab-controlled O3 exposures with levels of 150, 300, and 1000 μg/m3 (2 h), compared to synthetic air exposure. Importantly, heptanal was experimentally confirmed as a reliable biomarker for O3 exposure, with a notable dose-response relationship. In contrast, conventional biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in rat sera exhibited insignificant differences after the 2 h exposures. The results imply that breath-borne gaseous biomarkers can serve as an early and sensitive indicator for ambient pollutant exposure. This work pioneered a new research paradigm for online monitoring of air pollution health impacts while obtaining important candidate biomarker information for PM2.5 and O3 exposures.

Explorative study for the rapid detection of Fritillaria using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry

Fritillaria is a well-known health-promoting food, but it has many varieties and its market circulation is chaotic. In order to explore the differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among different varieties of Fritillaria and quickly and accurately determine the variety of Fritillaria, this study selected six varieties of Fritillaria and identified and analyzed their volatile components using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), establishing the characteristic fingerprints of VOCs in Fritillaria. In all samples, a total of 76 peaks were detected and 67 VOCs were identified. It was found that the composition of VOCs in different varieties of Fritillaria was similar, but the content was different. Combined with chemometric analysis, the differences between VOCs were clearly shown after principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and partial least-squares discriminant analysis. This may provide theoretical guidance for the identification and authenticity determination of different varieties of Fritillaria.

Visual Recognition of Volatile Organic Compounds by Photonic Nose Integrated with Multiple Metal-Organic Frameworks

The photonic nose inspired by the olfactory system is an integrated detection platform constructed by multiple sensing units as channels. However, in the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the sensing results that cannot be directly readable and the poor ability to distinguish analytes with similar chemical properties are the main challenges faced by this sensor. Here, 8 metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-based photonic crystals are used as the basic sensing units to construct a photonic nose detection platform. The microscopic adsorption of VOCs by MOFs enables the photonic crystals (PCs) to produce macroscopic structural color output, and further makes the photonic nose have specific color fingerprints for different VOCs, the response time of all PCs to VOCs can be within 1 s. Through the color fingerprint, the visual identification of VOCs produced by 5 common solvent vapors is realized, and 9 VOCs with similar chemical properties are further distinguished. In addition, the application potential of the photonic nose in the actual environment is verified by identifying different contents of benzene in the paint. It is envisaged that the MOF-based photonic nose has great reference value for the development of intelligent and multi-component synergistic functional gas sensors.

Boosting the photocatalytic activity of β-FeOOH catalyst for toluene oxidation by constructing internal electric field at 0D/1D homojunction interfaces

Photocatalytic degradation is considered as the most energy-efficient, environmentally benign, and effective method for treating low fraction organic contaminants. However, the photocatalysts still suffer from low utilization efficiency of visible-light and severe carrier recombination. Heterojunctions can resolve these two main problems in some extent but still be restrained by the low quality of hetero-interface. In this study, homojunction was constructed of β-FeOOH quantum dots and nanorods with the same lattice by a two-step precipitation method, to avoid the heterointerface with too many defects and possess good charge separation as a consequence. The catalysts were characterized by activity test, electron spin resonance, Mott-Schottky plots, photocurrent density tests and open-circuit potential measurements, etc. The results revealed that a strong internal electric fields (IEFs) was created at the interface of catalyst. Beneficently, the electron rearrangement leads to a more rational distribution of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst, resulting in more efficient dissociation of oxygen molecules and formation of active radicals, thus facilitating the efficient degradation of toluene. This study proposes a novel strategy to boosting the photocatalytic activity of low dimensional semiconductors via forming homojunction interfaces to improve their charge transfer.

Exhaled VOC Biomarkers from Rats Injected with PMs from Thirty-One Major Cities in China

Particulate matter (PMs) of different origins can cause diverse health effects. Here, a homemade box was used to facilitate real-time measurements of breath-borne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry. We have tracked exhaled VOC changes in 228 Wistar rats that were injected with water-soluble PM suspension filtrates (after 0.45 μm) from 31 China cities for 1 h to up to 1-6 days during the experiments. Rats exposed to the filtrates exhibited significant changes in breath-borne VOCs within hours, featuring dynamic fluctuations in the levels of acetone, butan-2-one, heptan-2-one-M, acetic acid-M, and ethanol. Subsequently, on the fifth to sixth day after the injection, there was a notable increase in the proportion of aldehydes (including hexanal-M, hexanal-D, pentanal, heptanal-M, and (E)-2-hexenal). The 10 dynamic VOC fingerprint patterns mentioned earlier showcased the capability to indirectly differentiate urban PM toxicity and categorize the 31 cities into four distinct groups based on their health effects. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of exhaled VOCs and underscores their critical role as biomarkers for differentiating the toxicity of different PMs and detecting the early signs of potential diseases. The results from this work also provide a scientific basis for city-specific air pollution control and policy development.

Can the development of renewable energy in China compensate for the damage caused by environmental pollution to residents' health?

China's rapid economic growth in recent decades has caused a growing problem of environmental pollution, which negatively impacts the physical and mental health of residents. In recent years, renewable energy has emerged as a promising solution to alleviate environmental pollution and improve residents' well-being. However, it is unknown whether renewable energy development can counterbalance the health impacts of environmental pollution. Therefore, we conducted a study using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) to examine the impact of environmental pollution and renewable energy on the health of 20,694 residents. Our analysis showed that renewable energy development can partially offset the negative health effects of environmental pollution. Specifically, we found that a 1% increase in environmental pollution is linked to an average decrease of 0.0911% in physical health (PHY) and 0.0566% in mental health (MEN), whereas each 1% rise in renewable energy corresponds to an average increase of 0.2585% in PHY and 0.1847% in MEN. These positive effects apply to male and female residents, urban and rural residents, young and middle-aged adults, and people with low, medium, and high levels of education. These findings are significant for decision-makers striving to improve Chinese residents' physical and mental health by considering the specific impact of renewable energy and comprehensive environmental pollution.

Biomimetic Metal-Organic Framework-Based Photonic Crystal Sensor for Highly Sensitive Visual Detection and Effective Discrimination of Benzene Vapor

Due to the large specific surface area and continuous pores in structures, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great advantages in the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Photonic crystal (PC) sensors derived from MOFs are promising for the visual detection of VOC gases. However, they still have problems of low sensitivity and poor color saturation and tunability. Here, inspired by vapor-sensitive scales of Tmesisternus isabellae beetle and scattering light absorption of polydopamine, a porous one-dimensional PC sensor is constructed by combining ZIF-8 with TiO₂@PDA nanoparticles. The PC sensor shows significant color changes under different concentrations of benzene vapor and reaches a detection limit of 0.8 g/m³. It has a response time of less than 1 s and maintains stable optical performance after 100 times of reuse. Moreover, ZIF-67 and ZIF-7 are both incorporated into the PCs for comparison; it reveals that ZIF-8 shows superior benzene detecting property. Additionally, the synergistic adsorption of VOCs in inner and outer holes of the ZIF-8 layer is demonstrated by real-time mass monitoring with quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. This study provides a valuable reference for the fabrication of high-quality MOF-based PC sensors and sensing mechanism study between microscopic molecular adsorption and macroscopic performance.

Indoor Volatile Organic Compounds: Concentration Characteristics and Health Risk Analysis on a University Campus

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major indoor air pollutants that contain several toxic substances. However, there are few studies on health risk assessments of indoor VOCs in China. This study aimed to determine the concentration characteristics of VOCs on college campuses by collecting VOC samples from different locations on campus during different seasons combined with the exposure times of college students in each location obtained from a questionnaire survey to assess the possible health risks. The highest total VOC concentration (254 ± 101 µg/m³) was in the dormitory. The seasonal variation of TVOC concentrations was related to the variation of emission sources in addition to temperature. Health risk assessments of VOCs were evaluated using non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk values, represented by hazard quotient (HQ) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR), respectively. The non-carcinogenic risks at all sampling sites were within the safe range (HQ < 1). Dormitories had the highest carcinogenic risk, whereas the carcinogenic risk in the other three places was low (with LCR < 1.0 × 10^-6). Moreover, 1,2-dichloroethane was identified as a possible carcinogenic risk substance in the dormitory due to its high LCR (1.95 × 10^-6). This study provides basic data on health risks in different locations on campus and a basis for formulating measures to improve people's living environments.

Unveiling the Position Effect of Ce within Layered MnO2 to Prolong the Ambient Removal of Indoor HCHO

The position of Ce doping has a significant effect on ambient HCHO storage and catalytic oxidation on layered MnO₂. By associating structure and performance, it is unveiled that doping Ce into the in-layered lattice of MnO₂ is favorable to the generation of high-valence Mn cations, enhancing the oxidizing ability and capacity, but an opposite influence is displayed by interlayered Ce doping. From the aspect of energy minimization calculated by DFT, in-layered Ce doping is also recommended due to the decreased energies for molecule adsorption and oxygen vacancy formation. As a result, in-layered Ce-doped MnO₂ displays exceptional activity in catalyzing the deep oxidation of HCHO and a fourfold higher capacity of ambient HCHO storage than pristine MnO₂. The optimal oxide is combined with electromagnetic induction heating to complete the "storage-oxidation" cycle as a promising approach absolutely depending on non-noble oxides and household appliances to realize the long-acting removal of indoor HCHO at room temperature.

Abatement of VOCs mixture of emerging concern by VUV-PCO process: From lab to pilot scale

As a kind of emerging pollutant, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are getting increasing attention due to their contribution to the formation of atmospheric haze and O₃. Photocatalytic oxidation under vacuum ultraviolet photocatalytic oxidation (VUV-PCO) presents a promising method for VOCs degradation, but it is seldom studied for VOCs compound and the mechanism is still elusive. Herein, typical VOCs such as toluene and ethyl acetate were degraded separately or together in VUV system and in VUV-PCO system with the designed trifunctional catalyst Mn/TiO₂/ZSM-5. Intermediates were recognized by PTR-TOF-MS. It is found that dual VOCs mixture outperformed single VOCs under both VUV process and VUV-PCO process. Possible degradation mechanisms were proposed. To explore the potential practicality of VUV-PCO technology, scale-up synthesis of Mn/TiO₂/ZSM-5 on ceramic foams was successfully carried out and assembled into a homemade pilot-scale VUV-PCO equipment for the control of simulated VOCs complex (toluene, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and acetone). Pilot-scale catalytic testing with the monolithic catalysts achieved high removal efficiency (over 90 % efficiency after two cycles of regeneration) and confirmed the practical application possibility of VUV-PCO technology in multiple VOCs degradation. This work probes into the VUV-PCO technology applicability from lab scale to pilot scale and promotes the understanding of VUV and VUV-PCO in VOCs complex decomposition.

Efficient degradation of VOCs using semi-coke activated carbon loaded ternary Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst BiVO4-BiPO4-g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation

The coal chemical industry generates large amounts of solid waste and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, the solid waste semi-coke powder obtained in the semi-coke production process was used as a raw material to prepare high-specific surface area semi-coke activated carbon (SAC) by a carbonization and activation process, and a ternary z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with high catalytic performance was loaded for synergistic treatment by adsorption and photodegradation to achieve waste treatment with waste. The prepared semi-coke activated carbon has a specific surface area of 619.27 m² g^-1, which can achieve effective adsorption of VOCs. The ternary z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst BiPO₄-BiVO₄-g-C₃N₄ (PVCN) was supported on a semi-coke activated carbon substrate by a one-step sol-gel method. Based on the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis, the obtained PVCN/SAC material can degrade toluene by 85.6% within 130 minutes under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 2.43 times that of pure photocatalyst. The rate of degrading toluene can be increased by 4.43 times. Capture experiments showed that superoxide radicals (_˙O₂^-) and hydroxyl radicals (_˙OH) were the key active species in the degradation pathway. Even after five cycles, the material maintained 81.6% of the degradation performance. In this work, we deeply investigate the mechanism of semi-coke activated carbon as a matrix for enhancing photocatalytic degradation performance. The findings of this work provide new insights into the efficient degradation of VOCs and provide a good theoretical basis for the development of high-performance photocatalysts.

Gene-Regulated Release of Distinctive Volatile Organic Compounds from Stressed Living Cells

Breath-borne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been increasingly studied as non-invasive biomarkers in both medical diagnosis and environmental health research. Recently, changes in breath-borne VOC fingerprints were demonstrated in rats and humans following pollutant exposures. In this study, the eukaryotic model Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to study the release of cellular VOCs resulting from toxicant exposures (i.e., O₃, H₂O₂, and CO₂) and its underlying biological mechanism. Our results showed that different toxicant exposures caused the release of distinctive VOC profiles of yeast cells. The levels of ethyl acetate and ethyl n-propionate were altered in response to all the toxicants used in this study and could thus be targeted for future environmental toxicity monitoring. The RNA-seq results revealed significant changes in the metabolic or signaling pathways related to the ribosome, carbohydrate, and amino acid metabolisms after exposures. Notably, the shift from glycolysis to the pentose phosphate pathway of carbohydrate metabolism and the inhabitation of the aspartate pathway in the lysine synthesis was essential to the cellular antioxidation by providing reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). The reprogrammed metabolisms could have resulted in the observed changes of VOCs released, e.g., the production of ethyl acetate for detoxification from yeast cells. This study provides further evidence that VOCs released from living organisms could be used to monitor and guard against toxic exposures while providing better mechanistic insights of the changes in breath-borne VOCs previously observed in rats and humans exposed to air toxicants.
