Quantitative Contribution of Oxygen Vacancy Defects to Arsenate Immobilization on Hematite

Generic phosphate affinity constants of the CD-MUSIC-eSGC model to predict phosphate adsorption and dominant speciation on iron (hydr)oxides

Estimating the availability of phosphorus in soils and sediments is complicated by the diverse mineralogical properties of iron (hydr)oxides that control the environmental fate of phosphorus. Despite various surface complexation models have been developed, lack of generic phosphate affinity constants (logKPO4s) for iron (hydr)oxides hinders the prediction of phosphate adsorption to iron (hydr)oxides in nature. The aim of this work is to derive generic logKPO4s for the Charge Distribution-Multisite Complexation extended-Stern-Gouy-Chapman (CD-MUSIC-eSGC) model using a large phosphate adsorption database and previously derived generic protonation parameters. The optimized logKPO4s of goethite, hematite and ferrihydrite are located in a much narrower range than those in the RES3T database. Specifically, the logKPO4 ranges of FeOPO3, FeOPO2OH, FeOPO(OH)2, (FeO)2PO2, and (FeO)2POOH complexes were 17.40-18.00, 24.20-27.40, 27.90-29.80, 26.50-29.60, and 30.70-33.40, respectively. A simplified CD-MUSIC-eSGC model with species FeOPO2OH and (FeO)2PO2 and generic logKPO4 values 26.0 ± 0.9 and 27.9 ± 0.8, respectively, provides an accurate prediction of phosphate adsorption and dominant speciation to the iron (hydr)oxides at environmental pH and phosphate levels. For ferrihydrite at low pH and high phosphate levels the species FeOPO(OH)2 and (FeO)2POOH cannot be neglected. The simplified model expands the application boundaries of CD-MUSIC-eSGC model in predicting the phosphate adsorption on natural iron (hydr)oxides without laborious characterization.

Extent of As(III) versus As(V) adsorption on iron (oxyhydr) oxides depends on the presence of vacancy cluster-like micropore sites: Insights into a seesaw effect

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides are ubiquitous in terrestrial environments and play a crucial role in controling the fate of arsenic in sediments and groundwater. Although there is evidence that different iron (oxyhydr)oxides have different affinities towards As(III) and As(V), it is still unclear why As(V) adsorption on some iron (oxyhydr)oxides is larger than As(III) adsorption, while it is opposite for other ones. In this study, six typical iron (oxyhydr)oxides are selected to evaluate their adsorption capacities for As(III) and As(V). The characteristics of these iron minerals such as morphology, arsenic adsorption species, and pore size distribution are carefully examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We confirm a seesaw effect occurred in different iron minerals for As(III) and As(V) immobilization, i.e., at pH 6.0, adsorption of As(V) on hematite (0.73 μmol m-2) and magnetite (0.33 μmol m-2) is higher than for As(III) (0.61 μmol m-2 and 0.27 μmol m-2, respectively), for goethite and lepidocrocite it is almost equal, while As(III) sorption on ferrihydrite (5.77 μmol m-2) and schwertmannite (28.41 μmol m-2) showed higher sorption than As(V) (1.53 μmol m-2 and 12.99 μmol m-2, respectively). PAL analysis demonstrates that ferrihydrite and schwertmannite have a large concentration of vacancy cluster-like micropores, significantly more than goethite and lepidocrocite, followed by hematite and magnetite. The difference of adsorption of As(III) and As(V) to different iron (oxyhydr)oxides is due to differences in the abundance of vacancy cluster-like micropore sites, which are conducive for smaller size As(III) immobilization but not for larger size of As(V). The findings of this study provide novel insights into a seesaw effect for As(III) and As(V) immobilization on naturally occurring iron mineral.

Crystal Water in Minerals Modulates Oxygen Activation for Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis

Sunlight-responsive minerals contribute significantly to biogeochemical cycles by activating oxygen (O2) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the role of crystal water, incorporated into minerals through hydration during rock cycles, in O2 activation remains largely unexplored. Here, we construct tungstite models containing oxygen vacancies to elucidate the modulation of mineral-based ROS dynamics by the synergy between oxygen vacancy and crystal water. Crystal water promotes the protonation process of superoxide anion radicals to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and alleviates its decomposition. This mineral-based H2O2 photosynthesis system efficiently eliminates organic pollutants in a sequential light-dark reaction. Furthermore, this synergy effect can extend to other metal oxide minerals such as TiO2, SnO2, CuO, ZnO, and Bi2O3. Our results illuminate an overlooked pathway for modulating the protonation process by immobilized water in hydrous minerals, playing a crucial role in ROS storage and migration and pollutant dynamics in a natural environment throughout the day/night cycle.

Efficient visible light-driven photodegradation of glyphosate utilizing Bi2WO6 with oxygen vacancies: Performance, mechanism, and toxicity assessment

Global environmental deterioration poses a major risk to ecological security and human health, and emerging technologies are urgently needed to deal with it. Therefore, the exploitation of photocatalysts with favorable activity for efficient degradation of pesticide contaminants is one of the strategies to achieve environmental remediation. Herein, oxygen vacancy-rich Bi2WO6 (Ov-BWO) was prepared through a solvothermal method utilizing ethylene glycol (EG), which exhibited excellent photocatalytic efficiency in photodegradation of glyphosate. The formation of oxygen vacancies (Ovs) in Ov-BWO was demonstrated utilizing XPS and EPR. PL, TRPL, photocurrent tests, and EIS analyses revealed that Ovs accelerated effective transfer of photogenerated charge, extended lifetime of charge carriers, promoted production of active species and significantly improved the photocatalytic performance. Compared with the low-activity Bi2WO6 (BWO, 59.6%), Ov-BWO showed outstanding photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation efficiency of 91% for glyphosate at 120 min of visible light irradiation. Moreover, Ov-BWO also displayed outstanding recyclable stability after four repeated uses. Based on the characterization of photoelectric properties, a feasible photocatalytic reaction was put forth, along with glyphosate degradation pathways. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of glyphosate were analyzed in detail employing HPLC-MS. The toxicity assessment indicated that degraded products had been proven to be non-toxic to the ecological system. This work presents the potential of photocatalysts with Ovs for the photodegradation of pesticides, providing a viable strategy for environmental renovation.

Vaporization phosphorization-mediated synthesis of phosphorus-doped TiO2 nanocomposites for combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy of renal cell carcinoma

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a disease with high incidence and poor prognosis. The conventional treatment involves radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but chemotherapeutic agents are often associated with side effects, i.e., cytotoxicity to nontumor cells. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for ccRCC. We synthesized spherical P/TiO2 nanoparticles (P/TiO2 NPs) by vaporization phosphorization (VP). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) analyses confirmed that the anatase TiO2 surface was successfully doped with phosphorus and produced a large number of oxygen vacancies (OV). Serving as a photosensitizer, P/TiO2 NPs not only extended the photoresponse range to the near-infrared II region (NIR II) but also introduced a donor energy level lower than the TiO2 conduction band, narrowing the band gap, which could facilitate the migration of photogenerated charges and trigger the synergistic treatment of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). During NIR irradiation in vitro, the P/TiO2 NPs generated local heat and various oxygen radicals, including 1O2, ˙O2-, H2O2, and ˙OH, which damaged the ccRCC cells. In vivo, administration of the P/TiO2 NPs + NIR reduced the tumor volume by 80%, and had the potential to inhibit tumor metastasis by suppressing intratumor neoangiogenesis. The P/TiO2 NPs showed superior safety and efficacy relative to the conventional chemotherapeutic agent used in ccRCC treatment. This study introduced an innovative paradigm for renal cancer treatment, highlighting the potential of P/TiO2 NPs as safe and effective nanomaterials and presenting a compelling new option for clinical applications in anticancer therapy.

Oxygen Vacancy Engineering of FeOx toward Oxygen-Tolerant Hydrogen Peroxide Reduction for Reliable Bioassays

The accurate determination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an important clinical disease relevant biomarker, is of great importance for the diagnosis and management of illnesses. By using the cathodic monitoring approach, H2O2 can be accurately detected because interfering signals from easily oxidizable endogenous and exogenous species in biofluids can be avoided. However, the simultaneous occurrence of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) restricts the practical use of this cathodic method. In this study, via oxygen vacancy modulation, we synthesized FeOx catalysts that can selectively reduce H2O2 over O2. The H2O2 detection system based on this catalyst exhibits an outstanding ORR inhibition ability. Furthermore, by integrating this catalyst with glucose oxidase, a model enzyme, a reliable bioassay system was developed that can selectively detect glucose over a wide variety of interferents in artificially simulated tissue fluids. The bioassay system employing this catalyst in conjunction with oxidases is generally applicable to accurate detect a wide range of biomarkers.
