Influence of Surface Functional Groups on Deposition and Release of TiO2 Nanoparticles

Fabrication of Poly(ethylene furanoate)/Silver and Titanium Dioxide Nanocomposites with Improved Thermal and Antimicrobial Properties

Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF)-based nanocomposites were fabricated with silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles by the in-situ polymerization method. The importance of this research work is to extend the usage of PEF-based nanocomposites with improved material properties. The PEF-Ag and PEF-TiO2 nanocomposites showed a significant improvement in color concentration, as determined by the color colorimeter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs revealed the appearance of small aggregates on the surface of nanocomposites. According to crystallinity investigations, neat PEF and nanocomposites exhibit crystalline fraction between 0-6%, whereas annealed samples showed a degree of crystallinity value above 25%. Combining the structural and molecular dynamics observations from broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) measurements found strong interactions between polymer chains and nanoparticles. Contact angle results exhibited a decrease in the wetting angle of nanocomposites compared to neat PEF. Finally, antimicrobial studies have been conducted, reporting a significant rise in inhibition of over 15% for both nanocomposite films against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. From the overall results, the synthesized PEF-based nanocomposites with enhanced thermal and antimicrobial properties may be optimized and utilized for the secondary packaging (unintended food-contact) materials.

Interface interaction between silica and organic macromolecule conditioned forward osmosis membranes: Insights into quantitative thermodynamics and dynamics

Silica scaling is a rising concern in forward osmosis membrane-based water treatment process. The coexistence of ubiquitous organic macromolecules causes complex silica scaling. The silica scaling mechanism on the surface of the organic conditioned membrane remains unclear. An integrated multi scale thermodynamic and dynamic approach was used in this study to provide in-depth insights into the binding effect at the interface between the silica and the organic conditioned membrane at the molecular level. Sodium alginate (SA) was used as the model polysaccharide, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LYZ) were chosen as two oppositely charged proteins. The results show that the silica scaling degree of different organic conditioned membranes follows the order LYZ > BSA > SA. The binding strength between silica and organic macromolecules and the membrane surface charge are the major factors governing the degree of silica scaling. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) model analyses were conducted to quantify the binding capacity of silica to the organic conditioned membrane. The LYZ conditioned membrane exhibits the highest affinity for silica adsorption, and electrostatic interaction was the main molecular interaction force. This study provides fresh insights into how silica and an organic conditioned membrane interact and induce silica scaling, providing new information on potential mechanisms and control strategies to prevent membrane scaling.

Food-Grade Titanium Dioxide Particles Decreased the Bioaccessibility of Vitamin D3 in the Simulated Human Gastrointestinal Tract

Food-grade titanium dioxide (E171) particles, as a "whiteness" additive, are often co-ingested with lipid-rich foods. Therefore, we explored the impact of E171 on lipid digestion and vitamin D₃ (VD₃) bioaccessibility encapsulated within oil-in-water emulsions in a simulated human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) model. VD₃ bioaccessibility significantly decreased from 80 to 74% when raising E171 from 0 to 0.5 wt %. The extent of lipid digestion was reduced by E171 addition in a dose-dependent manner. VD₃ bioaccessibility was positively correlated with the final amount of free fatty acids (FFAs) produced by lipid digestion (R² = 0.95), suggesting that the reduction in VD₃ bioaccessibility was due to the inhibition of lipid digestion by E171. Further experiments showed that E171 interacted with lipase and calcium ions, thereby interfering with lipid digestion. The findings of this study enhance our understanding toward the potential impact of E171 on the nutritional attributes of foods for human digestion health.

Development of a carboxyl-terminated indium tin oxide electrode for improving cell adhesion and facilitating low noise, real-time impedance measurements

The working electrode's surface property is crucial to cell adhesion and signal collection in electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS). To date, the indium tin oxide (ITO)-based working electrode is of interest in ECIS study due to its high transparency and biocompatibility. Of great concern is the impedance signal loss, distortion, and data interpretation conflict profoundly created by the movement of multiple cells during ECIS study. Here, a carboxyl-terminated ITO substrate was prepared by stepwise surface amino silanization, with N-hydroxy succinimide (NHS) and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) treatment, respectively. We investigated the stepwise changes in the property of the treated ITO, cell-substrate adhesion, collective cell mobility, and time course of change in absolute impedance from multiple Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells [(Δt-Δ|Z|)_CELLS]. The carboxyl-terminated ITO substrate with a surface roughness of 6.37 nm shows enhanced conductivity, 75% visible light transparency, improved cell adherence, reduced collective cell migration speed by approximately twofold, and diminished signal distortion in the [(Δt-Δ|Z|)_CELLS]. Thus, our study provides an ITO surface-treatment strategy to reduce multiple cell movement effects and to obtain essential cell information from the ECIS study of multiple cells through undistorted (Δt-Δ|Z|)_CELLS.

Plasmonic probing of the adhesion strength of single microbial cells

Studying interfacial dynamics of a single biological entity (cell, virus, or organelle) is critical for understanding microbial biofilm formation processes, developing biosensors, and designing biomaterials. However, the ability to measure the binding force between a single biological entity and surface remains a great challenge due to the hydrated feature of biological entity. In this paper, we present an optical imaging method that is able to measure the adhesion strength of single microbial cells. Unlike the existing methods with limited throughput, this method determines the adhesion strength of multiple individual cells simultaneously. This approach has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of the adhesion process at the microscopic scale and probe the biointerfaces.

Probing the binding between a microbe and surface is critical for understanding biofilm formation processes, developing biosensors, and designing biomaterials, but it remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a method to measure the interfacial forces of bacteria attached to the surface. We tracked the intrinsic fluctuations of individual bacterial cells using an interferometric plasmonic imaging technique. Unlike the existing methods, this approach determined the potential energy profile and quantified the adhesion strength of single cells by analyzing the fluctuations. This method provides insights into biofilm formation and can also serve as a promising platform for investigating biological entity/surface interactions, such as pathogenicity, microbial cell capture and detection, and antimicrobial interface screening.

Plasma polymerized nanoparticles effectively deliver dual siRNA and drug therapy in vivo

Multifunctional nanocarriers (MNCs) promise to improve therapeutic outcomes by combining multiple classes of molecules into a single nanostructure, enhancing active targeting of therapeutic agents and facilitating new combination therapies. However, nanocarrier platforms currently approved for clinical use can still only carry a single therapeutic agent. The complexity and escalating costs associated with the synthesis of more complex MNCs have been major technological roadblocks in the pathway for clinical translation. Here, we show that plasma polymerized nanoparticles (PPNs), synthesised in reactive gas discharges, can bind and effectively deliver multiple therapeutic cargo in a facile and cost-effective process compatible with up scaled commercial production. Delivery of siRNA against vascular endothelial growth factor (siVEGF) at extremely low concentrations (0.04 nM), significantly reduced VEGF expression in hard-to-transfect cells when compared with commercial platforms carrying higher siRNA doses (6.25 nM). PPNs carrying a combination of siVEGF and standard of care Paclitaxel (PPN-Dual) at reduced doses (< 100 µg/kg) synergistically modulated the microenvironment of orthotopic breast tumors in mice, and significantly reduced tumor growth. We propose PPNs as a new nanomaterial for delivery of therapeutics, which can be easily functionalised in any laboratory setting without the need for additional wet-chemistry and purification steps.

Studies of Emission Processes of Polymer Additives into Water Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance-A Case Study on Organophosphate Esters

Plastic materials contain various additives, which can be released during the entire lifespan of plastics and pose a threat to the environment and human health. Despite our knowledge on leakage of additives from products, accurate and rapid approaches to study emission kinetics are largely lacking, in particular, methodologies that can provide in-depth understanding of polymer/additive interactions. Here, we report on a novel approach using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to measure emissions of additives to water from polymer films spin-coated on quartz crystals. The methodology, being accurate and reproducible with a standard error of ±2.4%, was applied to a range of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and polymers with varying physicochemical properties. The release of most OPEs reached an apparent steady-state within 10 h. The release curves for the studied OPEs could be fitted using a Weibull model, which shows that the release is a two-phase process with an initial fast phase driven by partitioning of OPEs readily available at or close to the polymer film surface, and a slower phase dominated by diffusion in the polymer. The kinetics of the first emission phase was mainly correlated with the hydrophobicity of the OPEs, whereas the diffusion phase was weakly correlated with molecular size. The developed QCM-based method for assessing and studying release of organic chemicals from a polymeric matrix is well suited for rapid screening of additives in efforts to identify more sustainable replacement polymer additives with lower emission potential.

Release of deposited MnO2 nanoparticles from aqueous surfaces

Changes in solution chemistry and transport conditions can lead to the release of deposited MnO₂ nanoparticles from a solid interface, allowing them to re-enter the aqueous environment. Understanding the release behavior of MnO₂ nanoparticles from naturally occurring surfaces is critical for better prediction of the transport potential and environmental fate of MnO₂ nanoparticles. In this study, the release of MnO₂ nanoparticles was investigated using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), and different environmental surface types, solution pH values and representative macromolecular organics were considered. MnO₂ nanoparticles were first deposited on crystal sensors at elevated NaNO₃ concentrations before being rinsed with double-deionized water to induce their remobilization. The results reveal that the release rate of MnO₂ depends on the surface type, in the decreasing order: SiO₂ > Fe₃O₄ > Al₂O₃, resulting from electrostatic interactions between the surface and particles. Moreover, differences in solution pH can lead to variance in the release behavior of MnO₂ nanoparticles. The release rate from surfaces was significantly higher at pH 9.8 that at 4.5, indicating that alkaline conditions were more favorable for the mobilization of MnO₂ in the aquatic environment. In the presence of macromolecular organics, bovine serum albumin (BSA) can inhibit the release of MnO₂ from the surfaces due to attractive forces. In presence of humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA), the MnO₂ nanoparticles were more likely to be mobile, which may be associated with a large repulsive barrier imparted by steric effects.

Rapid Assessment of Water Toxicity by Plasmonic Nanomechanical Sensing

The ability to rapidly and accurately detect water toxicity is crucial for monitoring water quality and assessing toxic risk, but such detection remains a great challenge. Here, we present a plasmonic nanomechanical sensing (PNMS) system for the rapid assessment of water toxicity. This technique is based on the plasmonic sensing of the nanomechanical movement of single bacterial cells, which could be inhibited upon exposure to potential toxicants. By correlating the amplitude of nanomechanical movement with bacterial activity, we detected a variety of toxic substances in water. The direct readout of bacterial activity via PNMS allowed for a high sensitivity to toxicants in water, thereby enabling us to evaluate the acute toxicological effect of chemical compounds rapidly. The PNMS method is promising for online alerts of water quality safety and for assessing chemical hazards. We anticipate that PNMS is also suitable for a wide range of other applications, including bacterial detection and high-throughput screening of antibacterial materials.

Real-time monitoring of nanoscale TiO2 concentration by spectrophotometry: implications of agglomeration due to natural organic matter and multivalent ions

The study of the environmental fate of nanoscale TiO₂ (n-TiO₂) is a major recent research focus which requires a rapid and accurate on-site concentration determination method. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) has been the most widely used method for determining the concentration of n-TiO₂ in environmental samples; however, poses many challenges, such as hazardous hydrofluoric acid pre-treatment and clear limitations in mobile on-site measurement and monitoring. This study demonstrates that industrial wastewater containing natural organic matter (NOM) can present a major challenge to the analysis of n-TiO₂ by ICP-MS, and introduces a spectrophotometry technique that can be used as an alternative. The results suggest that spectrophotometry methods can be more accurate than slurry nebulization ICP-MS for measuring the concentrations of n-TiO₂ in wastewater containing NOM under low salt conditions. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the use of a portable flow-through spectrophotometer for use in applications of wastewater treatment and environmental monitoring with real-time feedback of n-TiO₂ concentrations. The ability to detect and monitor n-TiO₂ will greatly assist in improving the understanding of hazards and risks that emerging nanomaterials pose to the environment and the public health.

Deposition of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on surfaces in aquatic systems: a review of interaction forces, experimental approaches, and influencing factors

The growing development of nanotechnology has promoted the wide application of engineered nanomaterials, raising immense concern over the toxicological impacts of nanoparticles on the ecological environment during their transport processes. Nanoparticles in aquatic systems may undergo deposition onto environmental surfaces, which affects the corresponding interactions of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) with other contaminants and their environmental fate to a certain extent. In this review, the most common ENPs, i.e., carbonaceous, metallic, and nonmetallic nanoparticles, and their potential ecotoxicological impacts on the environment are summarized. Colloidal interactions, including Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) and non-DLVO forces, involved in governing the depositional behavior of these nanoparticles in aquatic systems are outlined in this work. Moreover, laboratory approaches for examining the deposition of ENPs on collector surfaces, such as the packed-bed column and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method, and the limitations of their applications are outlined. In addition, the deposition kinetics of nanoparticles on different types of surfaces are critically discussed as well, with emphasis on other influencing factors, including particle-specific properties, particle aggregation, ionic strength, pH, and natural organic matter. Finally, the future outlook and challenges of estimating the environmental transport of ENPs are presented. This review will be helpful for better understanding the effects and transport fate of ENPs in aquatic systems. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
