Modeling the Transport of the "New-Horizon" Reduced Graphene Oxide-Metal Oxide Nanohybrids in Water-Saturated Porous Media

New Insights into Aggregation Behaviors of the UV-Irradiated Dissolved Biochars (DBioCs) in Aqueous Environments: Effects of Water Chemistries and Variation in the Hamaker Constant

The aggregation behavior of ubiquitous dissolved black carbon (DBC) largely affects the fate and transport of its own contaminants and the attached contaminants. However, the photoaging processes and resulting effects on its colloidal stability remain yet unknown. Herein, dissolved biochars (DBioCs) were extracted from common wheat straw biochar as a proxy for an anthropogenic DBC. The influences of UV radiation on their aggregation kinetics were systematically investigated under various water chemistries (pH, electrolytes, and protein). The environmental stability of the DBioCs before and after radiation was further verified in two natural water samples. Hamaker constants of pristine and photoaged DBioCs were derived according to Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) prediction, and its attenuation (3.19 ± 0.15 × 10-21 J to 1.55 ± 0.07 × 10-21 J after 7 days of radiation) was described with decay kinetic models. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the surface properties and aggregation behaviors of DBioCs were significantly correlated with radiation time (p < 0.05), indicating its profound effects. Based on characterization and experimental results, we proposed a three-stage mechanism (contended by photodecarboxylation, photo-oxidation, and mineral exposure) that DBioCs might experience under UV radiation. These findings would provide an important reference for potential phototransformation processes and relevant behavioral changes that DBC may encounter.

Sorptive removal of phosphorus by flue gas desulfurization gypsum in batch and column systems

Phosphorus (P) over-loading is often a central topic due to its linkage to harmful algal blooms (HABs) and its importance in wastewater treatment that has fueled immediate remediation attempts to reduce P loading from point (e.g., wastewater) and nonpoint sources (e.g., fertilizers). Conventional remediation techniques (e.g., filtration) are often expensive, ineffective, and difficult to implement at large scales. The flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum produced as an energy plant waste byproduct has recently been advocated as a physiochemical remediation strategy for P through sorptive removal. However, limited research is available on the practical applications of FGD gypsum for P removal from water. Herein, batch sorption experiments were performed to investigate the sorptive removal efficiency of P by FGD gypsum under environmentally relevant P concentrations (0.01-0.25 mM). In parallel, fixed-bed column experiments packed with FGD gypsum were performed using elevated P concentrations (0.1-1.0 mM) to understand the scalability of FGD gypsum for large-scale practical applications. During batch experiments, P sorption equilibrium was reached within 24 h that includes an initially fast step (via boundary layer diffusion), followed by a slow rate-determining step (via intraparticle diffusion). P sorption kinetics followed the pseudo second-order kinetics, indicating chemisorption. P sorption at equilibrium can be simulated by both the Freundlich and Langmuir sorption isotherms. The Langmuir sorption isotherm yielded a maximum sorption capacity (Q_max) of 36.1 mM kg^-1. The fixed-bed column experimental results showed that sorption rate depends on the applied flow rate, irrespective of the tested P concentrations. Our findings can be extrapolated to evaluate the feasibility and scalability of FGD gypsum in removing P to counteract P runoff and mitigate HABs and P-loaded wastewater.

Modeling graphene oxide transport and retention in biochar

Experimental data from fixed-bed column studies and a numerical model based on convection-dispersion equations were used to describe transport and retention of Graphene Oxide (GO) in sand, biochar (BC), and BC modified with nanoscale zero-valent iron (BC-nZVI). Three blocking functions, namely no blocking, site-blocking, and depth-dependent blocking, were used to analyze GO transport and retention behavior in each media as a function of Ionic Strength (IS). An inverse modeling approach was implemented to determine the attachment coefficient (K_a) and maximum solid-phase retention capacity (S_max). The Langmuirian attachment model with site-blocking function effectively described experimental GO breakthrough curves (R² ~ 0.70-0.99) compared to other models, indicating the importance of introducing a limit on the attachment capacity of the media. The K_a values for BC and BC-nZVI were significantly higher than sand, attributable to high porosity, roughness, and surface chemical properties. The models predicted an increasing trend in K_a (0.065 to 0.615 min^-1) in BC with increasing IS (0.1 to 10 mM), while K_a values decreased (2.26 to 0.349 min^-1) for BC-nZVI. A consistent increase in S_max was observed for both BC and BC-nZVI with increasing IS. Scenario analysis was conducted to further understand the effect of influent IS, GO concentration, and treatment depth. BC-nZVI exhibited a higher K_a and S_max and as a result, higher GO retention than BC at lower IS (0.1 and 1.0 mM). BC-nZVI had a relatively lower K_a (0.349 min^-1) at 10 mM IS, however, it outperformed BC when GO retention capacities are compared over a longer period attributable to a higher S_max (6.47). Complete GO breakthrough occurred in a 5 cm media after 350 and 465 days for BC and BC-nZVI, respectively at 10 mM IS and influent concentration of 0.1 mg·L^-1. GO breakthrough time increased with increasing treatment depth, however, the relation was non-linear.

The detection and characterization techniques for the interaction between graphene oxide and natural colloids: A review

The high dispersibility of graphene oxide (GO) and the universality of natural colloids (clay minerals, (hydr)oxides of Al, Fe, silica, etc.) make them interact easily. Many kinds of analytical methods have been used to study the interaction between GO and natural colloids. This review provides a comprehensive overview of analytical methods for the detection and quantification of interaction process. We highlighted the influence of the most relevant environmental factors (ionic strength, pH, etc.) on batch experiment, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring measurements, and column experiments. Besides, the benefits and drawbacks of spectroscopic, microscopic techniques, theoretical models, calculation and time-resolved dynamic light scattering methods also have discussed in this work. This review can give some guidance to researchers in their selection and combination of the technique for the research of the interaction between GO and natural colloids.

Insights into the transport of pristine and photoaged graphene oxide-hematite nanohybrids in saturated porous media: Impacts of XDLVO interactions and surface roughness

The transport behaviors of nanomaterials, in especial multifunctional nanohybrids have not been well disclosed until now. In this study, environmentally relevant conditions, including cation types, ionic strength and pH, were selected to investigate the transport and retention of graphene oxide-hematite (GO-Fe₂O₃) nanohybrids and a photoaged product in saturated sandy columns. Results show that more hybridization of hematite led to decreased negative surface charge, while increased particle size and hydrophobicity of the nanohybrids, which depressed their transport according to extented Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory. However, the inhibitory transport of photoaged nanohybrids was attributed to their distinct surface roughness caused by relatively high hybridization and photoirradiation. Notably the restrained transport was alleviated in the CaCl₂ saturated media, since the less surface O-functional groups of the corresponding nanohybrids reduced the cation bridging effect caused by Ca²⁺. Similarly, increasing pH promoted the transport of the nanohybrids in NaCl saturated media, particularly for the nanohybrids that contained rich O-functional groups, but exerted inconspicuous effect on mobility of the nanohybrids in CaCl₂ saturated media. These observations highlight that both XDLVO interactions and surface roughness may work together to impact the transport and fate of the burgeoning, versatile nanohybrids in the environment.

Energy Taxis toward Redox-Active Surfaces Decreases the Transport of Electroactive Bacteria in Saturated Porous Media

The fate and transport of bacteria in porous media are essential for bioremediation and water quality control. However, the influence of biological activities like extracellular electron transfer (EET) and swimming motility toward granular media on cell transport remains unknown. Here, electroactive bacteria with higher Fe(III) reduction abilities were found to demonstrate greater retention in ferrihydrite-coated sand. Increasing the concentrations of the electron donor (1-10 mM lactate), shuttle (0-50 μM anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate), and acceptor (ferrihydrite, MnO₂, or biochar) under flow conditions significantly reduced Shewanella oneidensis MR-1's mobility through redox-active porous media. The deficiency of EET ability or flagellar motion and inhibition of intracellular proton motive force, all of which are essential for energy taxis, enhanced MR-1's transport. It was proposed that EET could facilitate MR-1 to sense, tactically move toward, and attach on redox-active media surface, eventually improving its retention. Positive linear correlations were established among parameters describing MR-1's energy taxis ability (relative taxis index), cell transport behavior (dispersion coefficient and relative change of effluent percentage), and redox activity of media surface (reduction potential or electron-accepting rate), providing novel insights into the critical impacts of bacterial microscale motility on macroscale cell transport through porous media.

Highly efficient and recyclable catalyst: porous Fe3O4-Au magnetic nanocomposites with tailored synthesis

In this work, we reported the tailored design of highly efficient Fe₃O₄-Au magnetic nanocomposite (MNP) catalysts. Fe₃O₄ nanocrystals with three different morphologies have been developed with engineered amounts of urea, and the plausible mechanism has been proposed. Then by controlling the amount of Au seeds, Fe₃O₄-Au MNPs with different morphologies and tunable Au deposition have been realized. Characterizations including x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mössbauer spectra, and elemental mapping are implemented to unveil the structural and physical characteristics of the successfully developed Fe₃O₄-Au MNPs with different morphologies. The catalytic ability of Fe₃O₄-Au MNPs with different morphologies have been compared by applying them to degrading RhB and 4-NP, meanwhile the correlation between the amount of Au seeds and the turnover frequency as well as the catalytic ability of Fe₃O₄-Au MNPs is investigated systematically. We found that the flower-like Fe₃O₄-Au MNPs with 20 ml Au seeds added achieved the best degradation efficiency of 96.7%, and their catalytic ability were almost unchanged after recycling. Out study sheds the light into the tailored design of highly efficient and recyclable catalysts for RhB and 4-NP.

Transport and retention of Shewanella oneidensis strain MR1 in water-saturated porous media with different grain-surface properties

Bacterium Shewanella oneidensis strain (MR1), a facultative microorganism that plays critical role in contaminant transformation and degradation, was used as an example to decipher the transport and retention of microorganisms in water-saturated porous media with different grain-surface properties and under different ionic compositions (i.e. Na⁺, Ca²⁺, and Mg²⁺). Dolomite and quartz sands, which contained different surface charge properties, were used as the representative minerals. Dolomite was selected because its surface charges are significantly affected by solution composition. The mobility of MR1 in the dolomite column was lower than that in the quartz column, because the lower energy barrier between MR1 and dolomite than that between MR1 and quartz, resulting in the larger retention of MR1 in the dolomite column. The breakthrough curves were well simulated by the two sites kinetic model with HYDRUS-1D. The maximum concentration of attached bacteria (S_max) were positively correlated to the ionic strength regardless of mineral types. The values of S_max were about 1.1-4.0 times larger in the MR1-dolomite system than that in the MR1-quartz system under different ionic strength conditions. The retention of the MR1 on dolomite surfaces in the presence of divalent cations Ca²⁺ is significantly higher than that on quartz surfaces primarily due to the larger electrostatic attraction energy between the MR1 and dolomite grains. The findings demonstrate that the porous media with the lower negative charge has the higher capacity for the retention and deposition of MR1, potentially affecting the transport of MR1 and other bacteria in the subsurface.

Next-Generation Multifunctional Carbon-Metal Nanohybrids for Energy and Environmental Applications

Nanotechnology has unprecedentedly revolutionized human societies over the past decades and will continue to advance our broad societal goals in the coming decades. The research, development, and particularly the application of engineered nanomaterials have shifted the focus from "less efficient" single-component nanomaterials toward "superior-performance", next-generation multifunctional nanohybrids. Carbon nanomaterials (e.g., carbon nanotubes, graphene family nanomaterials, carbon dots, and graphitic carbon nitride) and metal/metal oxide nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Au, CdS, Cu₂O, MoS₂, TiO₂, and ZnO) combinations are the most commonly pursued nanohybrids (carbon-metal nanohybrids; CMNHs), which exhibit appealing properties and promising multifunctionalities for addressing multiple complex challenges faced by humanity at the critical energy-water-environment (EWE) nexus. In this frontier review, we first highlight the altered and newly emerging properties (e.g., electronic and optical attributes, particle size, shape, morphology, crystallinity, dimensionality, carbon/metal ratio, and hybridization mode) of CMNHs that are distinct from those of their parent component materials. We then illustrate how these important newly emerging properties and functions of CMNHs direct their performances at the EWE nexus including energy harvesting (e.g., H₂O splitting and CO₂ conversion), water treatment (e.g., contaminant removal and membrane technology), and environmental sensing and in situ nanoremediation. This review concludes with identifications of critical knowledge gaps and future research directions for maximizing the benefits of next-generation multifunctional CMNHs at the EWE nexus and beyond.

Cotransport of biochar and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in saturated porous media: Impacts of electrostatic interaction, extracellular electron transfer and microbial taxis

Biochar widely applied to soil can influence microbial community composition and participate in extracellular electron transfer (EET). However, little is known about the cotransport behaviors of bacteria and biochar in aquifer and soil-water environments, which can affect the fate and application performance of biochar. In this study, we found that in comparison to their individual transport behaviors, the mobilities of cotransporting Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and biochar colloid (BC) were significantly inhibited. The decreasing colloidal mobilities at higher ionic strengths signified the importance of electrostatic interaction between cell and BC in cotransport. Moreover, the less suppressed cotransport of BC and mutants defective of EET and the elevated inhibition effects on cotransport by adding exogenous electron donor suggested the importance of EET. Difference in cotransport behavior was also observed with BC having different redox states. Compared with oxidized BC, reduced BC with higher hydrophobicity led to easier aggregation with cell and higher retention in column. More importantly, MR-1 exhibited EET-dependent taxis towards biochar, which also contributed to the enhanced heteroaggregation and decreased mobilities of cell and biochar. Our results highlight that metabolic activities of microbes towards abiotic colloids cannot be neglected when assessing their transport behaviors, especially in subsurface environments abounded with redox-active inorganic particles and microbes performing extracellular respiration.
