Insight into the Crucial Role of Secondary Mineral Phases in the Transfer of Gold Nanoparticles through a Sand Column Using Online ICP-MS/spICP-MS Monitoring

Transport of nanoparticulate TiO2 UV-filters through a saturated sand column at environmentally relevant concentrations

The fate of sunscreen residues released during bathing activities around recreational areas is an emerging concern regarding the potential ecotoxicity of some of their ingredients, including nanoparticulate TiO₂ UV-filters. To assess the extent of contamination in the natural medium, sand-packed column experiments were carried out with bare TiO₂ engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and two commercial nano-TiO₂ UV-filters coated with either SiO₂ (hydrophilic) or a combination of Al₂O₃ and simethicone (amphiphilic). The high sensitivity of (single particle)ICPMS online monitoring of the breakthrough curves made it possible to inject the ENPs at trace levels (2-100 μg L^-1) in eluents composed of 10^-3 and 10^-2 M NaCl and pHs of 5.7 and 7.8. The deposition of all ENPs in the sand increased with the ionic strength and decreased with the pH of the carrier. Both bare and SiO₂-coated ENPs showed a clear control by the electrostatic interactions between the particles and the quartz grains surfaces, in partial agreement with classical DLVO theory. Unexpectedly high rates of transfer were observed with the amphiphilic UV-filter, which could be explained by the addition of a contribution to the DLVO model to account for the steric repulsion between the sand collector and the polysiloxane surface layer of this ENP. These results demonstrate the major role played by the coating of UV-filters regarding their fate in porous media like soils, sediments and aquifers.

Transport and deposition of microplastic particles in saturated porous media: Co-effects of clay particles and natural organic matter

Natural colloids such as clays and natural organic matter (NOM) are universally present in environments, which could interact with microplastics (MPs) and thus alter the fate and transport of MPs in porous media. The co-effects of clays and NOM on MPs transport in saturated porous media were systematically explored at both low and high ionic strength (IS) conditions. Specifically, bentonite and humic acid (HA) were employed as representative clays and NOM. 5 mM NaCl and 1 mM CaCl₂ solutions were used as low IS conditions, while 25 mM NaCl and 5 mM CaCl₂ solutions were employed as high IS conditions. We found that formation of MPs-bentonite heteroaggregates had great effects on MPs transport under different conditions. Without HA, the small MPs-bentonite heteroaggregates formed under low IS increased MPs transport via serving as mobile carriers, while larger MPs-bentonite heteroaggregates formed at high IS led to the decreased MPs mobility. When both HA and bentonite were copresent in MPs suspension, we found that HA could inhibit the formation of larger sized MPs-bentonite heteroaggregates. Particularly, when the two types of natural colloids copresent in MPs suspensions, MPs transport behaviors were similar to those with only bentonite present in MPs suspensions at low IS, while MPs transport was greatly increased at high IS comparing with those only with bentonite in suspensions. Clearly, without HA in suspensions, bentonite played the dominant role on MPs transport under all examined conditions concerned in this study. Instead, when both HA and bentonite copresent in MPs suspensions, MPs transport was mainly controlled by bentonite at low IS, while both bentonite and HA had major contributions at high IS. The results showed that under solution conditions concerned in present study, MPs mobility in porous media would be greatly affected (either enhanced or inhibited) by the two types of natural colloids.

Engineered metal nanoparticles in the marine environment: A review of the effects on marine fauna

There is an increasing awareness of how damaging pollutants in the marine environment can be, however information on the effects of metal engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on marine biota is still insufficient, despite an exponential rising in related publications in recent years. In order to provide an integrated insight on the present state of the art on metal ENP-related ecotoxicology studies on marine fauna, this review aimed to: (i) highlight the means of toxicity of metal ENPs in the marine environment, (ii) identify the principal biotic and abiotic factors that may alter metal ENP toxicity, and (iii) analyse and categorize results of these studies, including accumulation, molecular and histological biomarkers, genotoxicity and behavioural changes. Data retrieved from Scopus yielded 134 studies that met pre-established criteria. Most often, the target ENPs were titanium, zinc, copper or silver, and most studies (61.2%) focused on the phylum Mollusca. The degree of toxicity of metal ENPs was often dependent on the concentrations tested, length of exposure and the type of tissue sampled. Effects from simple tissue accumulation to DNA damage or behavioural alterations were identified, even when concentrations below environmentally available levels were used. It is proposed that other phyla besides the traditional Mollusca (and within it Bivalvia) should be used more often in this kind of studies, that exact pathways of toxicity be further explored, and lastly that co-stressors be used in order to best mimic conditions observed in nature. In this review, the current knowledge on engineered metal nanoparticles and their effects on marine fauna was summarized, highlighting present knowledge gaps. Guidelines for future studies focusing on under-developed subjects in ENP toxicology are also briefly provided.
