In Situ-Forming Magnetic Fe3O4 Nanoroses on Defect-Controllable Mesoporous Graphene Oxide for Enzyme-Mimic Sensing

Mesoporous DNA-Co@C nanofibers knitted aptasensors performing onsite determination of trace kanamycin residues

The abuse of kanamycin (KAN) poses an increasing threat to human health by contaminating agricultural and animal husbandry products, drinking water, and more. Therefore, the sensitive detection of trace KAN residues in real samples is crucial for monitoring agricultural pollution, ensuring food safety, and diagnosing diseases. However, traditional assay techniques for KAN rely on bulky instruments and complicated operations with unsatisfactory detection limits. Herein, we developed a novel label-free aptasensor to achieve ultrasensitive detection of KAN by constructing mesoporous DNA-cobalt@carbon nanofibers (DNA-Co@C-NFs) as the recognizer. Leveraging the extended π-conjugation structure, prominent surface area, and abundant pores, the Co@C-NFs can effectively load aptamer strands via π-π stacking interactions, serving as KAN capturer and reporter. Due to the change in DNA configuration upon binding KAN, this aptasensor presented an ultralow detection limit and ultra-wide linear range, along with favorable precision and selectivity. Using real tap water, milk, and human serum samples, the aptasensor accurately reported trace KAN levels. As a result, this convenient and rapid autosensing technique holds promise for onsite testing of other antibiotic residues in agriculture, food safety, and clinical diagnosis.

Carbon-Based Enzyme Mimetics for Electrochemical Biosensing

Natural enzymes are used as special reagents for the preparation of electrochemical (bio)sensors due to their ability to catalyze processes, improving the selectivity of detection. However, some drawbacks, such as denaturation in harsh experimental conditions and their rapid de- gradation, as well as the high cost and difficulties in recycling them, restrict their practical applications. Nowadays, the use of artificial enzymes, mostly based on nanomaterials, mimicking the functions of natural products, has been growing. These so-called nanozymes present several advantages over natural enzymes, such as enhanced stability, low cost, easy production, and rapid activity. These outstanding features are responsible for their widespread use in areas such as catalysis, energy, imaging, sensing, or biomedicine. These materials can be divided into two main groups: metal and carbon-based nanozymes. The latter provides additional advantages compared to metal nanozymes, i.e., stable and tuneable activity and good biocompatibility, mimicking enzyme activities such as those of peroxidase, catalase, oxidase, superoxide dismutase, nuclease, or phosphatase. In this review article, we have focused on the use of carbon-based nanozymes for the preparation of electrochemical (bio)sensors. The main features of the most recent applications have been revised and illustrated with examples selected from the literature over the last four years (since 2020).

An Overview on Recent Progress of Metal Oxide/Graphene/CNTs-Based Nanobiosensors

Nanobiosensors are convenient, practical, and sensitive analyzers that detect chemical and biological agents and convert the results into meaningful data between a biologically active molecule and a recognition element immobilized on the surface of the signal transducer by a physicochemical detector. Due to their fast, accurate and reliable operating characteristics, nanobiosensors are widely used in clinical and nonclinical applications, bedside testing, medical textile industry, environmental monitoring, food safety, etc. They play an important role in such critical applications. Therefore, the design of the biosensing interface is essential in determining the performance of the nanobiosensor. The unique chemical and physical properties of nanomaterials have paved the way for new and improved sensing devices in biosensors. The growing demand for devices with improved sensing and selectivity capability, short response time, lower limit of detection, and low cost causes novel investigations on nanobiomaterials to be used as biosensor scaffolds. Among all other nanomaterials, studies on developing nanobiosensors based on metal oxide nanostructures, graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, and the widespread use of these nanomaterials as a hybrid structure have recently attracted attention. Nanohybrid structures created by combining these nanostructures will directly meet the future biosensors' needs with their high electrocatalytic activities. This review addressed the recent developments on these nanomaterials and their derivatives, and their use as biosensor scaffolds. We reviewed these popular nanomaterials by evaluating them with comparative studies, tables, and charts.
