Abstract
A tough ion gel membrane containing a CO2-philic ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ([Emim][C(CN)3]), was developed, and its CO2 permeation properties were evaluated under humid conditions at elevated temperatures. Pebax 1657, which is a diblock copolymer composed of a polyamide block and a polyethylene oxide block, was used as the gel network of the ion gel membrane to prepare a tough ion gel with good ionic liquid-holding properties. The polyamide block formed a semicrystalline structure in [Emim][C(CN)3] to toughen the ion gel membrane via an energy dissipation mechanism. The polyethylene oxide block exhibited good compatibility with [Emim][C(CN)3] and contributed to the retention of the ionic liquid in the ion gel. The developed ion gel membrane showed a good CO2 separation performance of 1677 barrer CO2 permeability and 37 CO2/N2 permselectivity under humid conditions of 75% relative humidity at an elevated temperature of 50 °C, which corresponds to an exhaust gas from a coal-fired power plant.

Abstract
Ion gels have the potential to be used in a broad range of applications, such as in carbon dioxide separation membranes and soft electronics. However, their low mechanical strength limits their practical applications. In this study, we developed double-network (DN) ion gels composed of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers with hydrophobic groups (TOCNF) and cross-linked poly[1-ethyl-3-vinylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide] (PC2im-TFSI) networks. The mechanical strength of the gel increased as the amount of TOCNF in the gels increased up to 6 wt%. Moreover, the fracture energy of the DN ion gels with 6 wt% TOCNF was found to be 19 times higher than that of the PC2im-TFSI single network (SN) ion gels. Cyclic stress-strain measurements of the DN gels showed that the loading energy on the gels dissipates owing to the destruction of the physically cross-linked TOCNF network in the gels. The DN ion gels also exhibited a high decomposition temperature of approximately 400 °C because of the thermal stability of all components. Additionally, the fracture energy of the TOCNF/poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) DN ion gel was two times higher than that of the silica nanoparticles/PIL DN ion gel developed in our previous study [Watanabe et al., Soft Matter, 2020, 16, 1572-1581]. This suggests that fiber-shaped nanomaterials are more effective than spherical nanomaterials in enhancing the mechanical properties of ion gels. These results show that TOCNF can be used to toughen PIL-based ion gels and hence broaden their applications.

Abstract
CO2 separations from cabin air and the atmospheric air are challenged by the very low partial pressures of CO2. In this study, a facilitated transport membrane (FTM) is developed to separate CO2 from air using functionalized ionic liquid (IL) and poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) carriers. A highly permeable bicontinuous structured poly(ethersulfone)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (bPES/PET) substrate is used to support the PIL-IL impregnated graphene oxide thin film. The CO2 separation performance was tested under a mixture feed of CO2/N2/O2/H2O. Under 410 ppm of CO2 at 1 atm feed gas, CO2 permanence of 3923 GPU, and CO2/N2 and CO2/O2 selectivities of 1200 and 300, respectively, are achieved with helium sweeping on the permeate side. For increased transmembrane pressure (>0 atm), a thicker PIL-IL/GO layer was shown to provide mechanical strength and prevent leaching of the mobile carrier. CO2 binding to the carriers, ion diffusivities, and the glass transition temperature of the PIL-IL gels were examined to determine the membrane composition and rationalize the superior separation performance obtained. This report represents the first FTM study with PIL-IL carriers for CO2 separation from air.

Abstract
Human joints support us to reduce the impact on our body and move them smoothly. As they are composed of gel-like structures, gel materials with soft and resilient properties are expected, as lubricants, to provide high efficiency and a long lifetime for mechanical parts. While double network gels including ionic liquids as swelling agents possess high mechanical strength and stable low friction under high temperature or vacuum, their fabrication process is complex and time-consuming. In this study, we applied one-pot synthesis to a double network ion gel (DNIG) to obtain a thin gel film by a simple coating method and examined its thermal, mechanical and tribological properties. The DNIG was obtained by one-pot synthesis (DNIG-1) combining polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane and radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate to form silica and poly(methyl methacrylate) as a 1st and 2nd network, respectively. Such obtained DNIG-1 was characterized and compared with DNIG obtained by a conventional two-step process (DNIG-2). Thermogravimetric analysis and the compressive stress–strain test showed high thermal stability and mechanical strength of DNIG-1. As friction at the glass/DNIG-1 interface showed high friction compared with that at glass/DNIG-2, various counterface materials were applied to examine their effect on the friction of DNIG-1. As SUS304/DNIG-1 showed much lower friction compared with glass/DNIG-1, the difference in the friction was presumably due to the different adsorption forces and compatibility between the materials.
