Rational Design and Screening of Ionic Liquid Absorbents for Simultaneous and Stepwise Separations of SO2 and CO2 from Flue Gas

Process Simulation and Optimization on Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising alternative compounds that enable the development of technologies based on their unique properties as solvents or catalysts. These technologies require integrated product and process designs to select ILs with optimal process performances at an industrial scale to promote cost-effective and sustainable technologies. The digital era and multiscale research methodologies have changed the paradigm from experiment-oriented to hybrid experimental-computational developments guided by process engineering. This Review summarizes the relevant contributions (>300 research papers) of process simulations to advance IL-based technology developments by guiding experimental research efforts and enhancing industrial transferability. Robust simulation methodologies, mostly based on predictive COSMO-SAC/RS and UNIFAC models in Aspen Plus software, were applied to analyze key IL applications: physical and chemical CO2 capture, CO2 conversion, gas separation, liquid-liquid extraction, extractive distillation, refrigeration cycles, and biorefinery. The contributions concern the IL selection criteria, operational unit design, equipment sizing, technoeconomic and environmental analyses, and process optimization to promote the competitiveness of the proposed IL-based technologies. Process simulation revealed that multiscale research strategies enable advancement in the technological development of IL applications by focusing research efforts to overcome the limitations and exploit the excellent properties of ILs.

Cation functional group effect on SO2 absorption in amino acid ionic liquids

Introduction: The effect of the functional group of the cation on SO2 acidic gas absorption by some designed amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) was studied. Methods: An isolated pair of glycinate anion and pristine imidazolium-based cation, as well as decorated cation functionalized by hydroxyl (OH), amine (NH₂), carboxylic acid (COOH), methoxy (OCH₃), and acetate (CH₃COO) groups, were structurally optimized by density functional theory (DFT) using split-valence triple-zeta Pople basis set. Results and Discussion: The binding and Gibbs free energy (ΔG_int) values of SO₂ absorption show the AAIL functionalized by the COOH group is the most thermodynamically favorable green solvent and this functional group experiences the closest distance between anion and captured SO₂ and vice versa in the case of cation … SO₂ which may be the main reason for being the best absorbent; in addition, the highest net charge-transfer amount of SO₂ is observed. Comparing the non-covalent interaction of the systems demonstrates that the strongest hydrogen bond between captured gas and anion, as well as π-hole, and van der Waals (vdW) interaction play critical roles in gas absorption; besides, the COOH functional group decreases the steric effect while the CH₃COO functional group significantly increases steric effect after absorption that declines the hydrogen bond.

Combined Superbase Ionic Liquid Approach to Separate CO2 from Flue Gas

Superbase ionic liquids (ILs) with a trihexyltetradecylphosphonium cation and a benzimidazolide ([P₆₆₆₁₄][Benzim]) or tetrazolide ([P₆₆₆₁₄][Tetz]) anion were investigated in a dual-IL system allowing the selective capture and separation of CO₂ and SO₂, respectively, under realistic gas concentrations. The results show that [P₆₆₆₁₄][Tetz] is capable of efficiently capturing SO₂ in preference to CO₂ and thus, in a stepwise separation process, protects [P₆₆₆₁₄][Benzim] from the negative effects of the highly acidic contaminant. This results in [P₆₆₆₁₄][Benzim] maintaining >53% of its original CO₂ uptake capacity after 30 absorption/desorption cycles in comparison to the 89% decrease observed after 11 cycles when [P₆₆₆₁₄][Tetz] was not present. Characterization of the ILs post exposure revealed that small amounts of SO₂ were irreversibly absorbed to the [Benzim]^- anion responsible for the decrease in CO₂ capacity. While optimization of this dual-IL system is required, this feasibility study demonstrates that [P₆₆₆₁₄][Tetz] is a suitable sorbent for reversibly capturing SO₂ and significantly extending the lifetime of [P₆₆₆₁₄][Benzim] for CO₂ uptake.
