Indoor Air Purification of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Using Activated Carbon, Zeolite, and Organosilica Sorbents

A comprehensive review and perspective research in technology integration for the treatment of gaseous volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are harmful pollutants emitted from industrial processes. They pose a risk to human health and ecosystems, even at low concentrations. Controlling VOCs is crucial for good air quality. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various methods used for controlling VOC abatement. The advancement of mono-functional treatment techniques, including recovery such as absorption, adsorption, condensation, and membrane separation, and destruction-based methods such as natural degradation methods, advanced oxidation processes, and reduction methods were discussed. Among these methods, advanced oxidation processes are considered the most effective for removing toxic VOCs, despite some drawbacks such as costly chemicals, rigorous reaction conditions, and the formation of secondary chemicals. Standalone technologies are generally not sufficient and do not perform satisfactorily for the removal of hazardous air pollutants due to the generation of innocuous end products. However, every integration technique complements superiority and overcomes the challenges of standalone technologies. For instance, by using catalytic oxidation, catalytic ozonation, non-thermal plasma, and photocatalysis pretreatments, the amount of bioaerosols released from the bioreactor can be significantly reduced, leading to effective conversion rates for non-polar compounds, and opening new perspectives towards promising techniques with countless benefits. Interestingly, the three-stage processes have shown efficient decomposition performance for polar VOCs, excellent recoverability for nonpolar VOCs, and promising potential applications in atmospheric purification. Furthermore, the review also reports on the evolution of mathematical and artificial neural network modeling for VOC removal performance. The article critically analyzes the synergistic effects and advantages of integration. The authors hope that this article will be helpful in deciding on the appropriate strategy for controlling interested VOCs.

Cooperative and Bifunctional Adsorbent-Catalyst Materials for In-situ VOCs Capture-Conversion

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes and are major components of air pollution that significantly deteriorate air quality and seriously affect human health. Different types of metals, metal oxides, mixed-metal oxides, polymers, activated carbons, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and mixed-matrixed materials have been developed and used as adsorbent or catalyst for diversified VOCs detection, removal, and destruction. In this comprehensive review, we first discuss the general classification of VOCs removal materials and processes and outline the historical development of bifunctional and cooperative adsorbent-catalyst materials for the removal of VOCs from air. Subsequently, particular attention is devoted to design of strategies for cooperative adsorbent-catalyst materials, along with detailed discussions on the latest advances on these bifunctional materials, reaction mechanisms, long-term stability, and regeneration for VOCs removal processes. Finally, challenges and future opportunities for the environmental implementation of these bifunctional materials are identified and outlined with the intent of providing insightful guidance on the design and fabrication of more efficient materials and systems for VOCs removal in the future.

Agro-Waste Valorization into Carbonaceous Eco-Hydrogel: A Circular Economy and Zero Waste Tactic for Doxorubicin Removal in Water/Wastewater

The existing work aims to evaluate the efficiency of eco-hydrogel for adsorption of pollutants prepared from biopolymeric matrix and agricultural waste-derived biochar. An efficient and reusable adsorbent, designed from the integration of maize stalk activated carbon into a gelatin-alginate composite (MSAC@GE-SA) was explored for removal of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Doxo.HCL) from polluted water. The structural properties, presence of surface functional groups, and elemental composition were explored using XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS techniques. The key adsorption parameters such as Doxo.HCL concentration, MSAC@GE-SA amount, solution pH, and the contact time between adsorbate and adsorbents were successfully optimized for the effective removal of Doxo.HCL (qmax = 239.41 mg g-1). The kinetic mechanism of MSAC@GE-SA fits well with a pseudo-second-order rate model (R2 = 0.980), followed by mono- and multilayered Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with R2 values 0.991 and 0.993, respectively. The recyclability of MSAC@GE-SA showed great stability without any physical damage and having sustained removal efficiency up to 10 cycles (96.32 to 55.66%). The versatility of MSAC@GE-SA was further investigated for river, canal, and sewage water samples under identical experimental conditions. The practicality of the MSAC@GE-SA was evaluated by spiking Doxo.HCL into industrial effluents via the standard addition method. Subsequently, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the treated pollutants exhibited a notable reduction, decreasing significantly from 128 to 80 mg L-1. Following 10 successful adsorption-desorption cycles, the spent MSAC@GE-SA was utilized as a fertilizer for Vigna radiata plants, positively contributing to overall plant growth without causing harm. Hence, proposed adsorbent (MSAC@GE-SA) emerges as a viable and sustainable solution, demonstrating features of reusability and cost-effectiveness. It holds significant promise for the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants, aligning with the principles of circular economy and zero-waste tactics.

Research on nonsteady-state adsorption and regulation towards stabler adsorption for benzene over single-wall carbon materials

With the intention of separating benzene (C6H6) from indoor polluted air and collecting it in a cleaner way, it is promising of getting C6H6 adsorbed on activated carbon materials with outstanding physicochemical properties. In this study, how C6H6 is adsorbed over single-wall carbon materials and relevant adsorption processes are enhanced is thoroughly investigated via density functional theory (DFT). Especially, distinction between partial and whole effects of adsorbents on C6H6 adsorption, features of electron distribution across section of adsorption forms, and regulation mechanism of nonsteady-state adsorption for C6H6 are key points. According to calculation results, C6H6 molecules could be captured by pure single-wall carbon nanotube (CNT) through repulsive forces (quantified as 103.42 kJ/mol) from all quarters, which makes it stay in nonsteady-state adsorption forms and easily run into free state. Therefore, when external temperature increases from 0 to 300 K, molecular movement will be intense enough to help C6H6 break into another random positions instead of statistically remaining immobile. As for this problem, single-wall CNTs are modified through making defects and replacing some C atoms with N atoms, respectively. In this way, surficial electron distribution of modified adsorbents is regulated to tremendously cut down repulsive forces (quantified as 50.30 kJ/mol) and reverse nonsteady-state adsorption into near-equilibrium quasi-steady-state adsorption (single-side attraction near 100 kJ/mol). Therefore, this research would provide useful information for exploiting single-wall carbon materials as effective adsorbents of C6H6 in order to quickly achieve indoor air purification.
