Characterization of Xylan-graft-Polycaprolactone Copolymers Prepared in Ionic Liquid

High-performance arabinoglucuronoxylan-based biosurfactants for oily sludge separation

Arabinoglucuronoxylan (AGX), an important carbohydrate polymer in lignocellulosic biomass, contains many functional groups. It has excellent amphiphilic modification properties and has potential application in the separation of oily sludge. In this study, a simple strategy for producing high-performance AGX-based biosurfactants was studied and the raw AGX was extracted from bamboo by hydrothermal treatment. AGX-based biosurfactants with amphiphilic structure were produced by AGX and dodecanal succinic anhydride (DDSA) using rapid homogeneous esterification reactions in deep eutectic solvents (DES). This resulted in a significant reduction in the surface tension of the water from 72.32 to 29.76 mN·m^-1. These parameters are similar to those achieved using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a widely employed synthetic surfactant. Other physicochemical properties, including foamability, emulsification activity, stability, solubilization, and detergency were significantly improved compared to the unmodified AGX, demonstrate that AGX-based biosurfactants are promising detergents for oily sludge remediation and oil recovery. The results provide a new pathway for high value utilization of arabinoglucuronoxylan.

Structural Changes of Bagasse dusring the Homogeneous Esterification with Maleic Anhydride in Ionic Liquid 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium Chloride

The maleation of bagasse could greatly increase the compatibility between bagasse and composite matrixes, and the percentage of substitution (PS) of bagasse maleates could be regulated in the homogeneous system. However, due to the complicated components and the linkages of bagasse, it was difficult to control the reaction behaviors of each component. In this paper, the detailed structural changes of bagasse during the homogeneous maleation in ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl) were comparatively investigated with the three main components (cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin) from bagasse. The PS of the maleated bagasse was 12.52%, and the PS of the maleated cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin were 13.50%, 10.89%, and 14.03%, respectively. Fourier translation infrared (FT-IR) and NMR analyses confirmed that the three main components were all involved in the homogeneous maleation. ¹H-¹³C HSQC analysis indicated that the predominant monoesterification of cellulose, diesterification of hemicelluloses and lignin, and the degradation of the three main components simultaneously occurred. Besides, the quantitative analysis from ¹H-¹³C HSQC revealed the relative PS of reactive sites in each component. ³¹P NMR results showed that the reactivity of lignin aliphatic hydroxyls was higher than that of phenolic ones, and the reactivity of phenolic hydroxyls followed the order of p-hydroxyphenyl hydroxyls > guaiacyl hydroxyls > syringyl hydroxyls.

Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Maleic Anhydride-Modified Xylan-g-Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogel with Multifunctional Properties

Introducing multifunctional groups and inorganic material imparts xylan-based hydrogels with excellent properties, such as responsiveness to pH, temperature, light, and external magnetic field. In this work, a composite hydrogel was synthesized by introducing acid treated carbon nanotubes (AT-CNTs) into the maleic anhydride modified xylan grafted with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (MAX-g-PNIPAM) hydrogels network. It was found that the addition of AT-CNTs affected the MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel structure, the swelling ratio and mechanical properties, and imparted the hydrogel with new properties of electrical conductivity and near infrared region (NIR) photothermal conversion. AT-CNTs could reinforce the mechanical properties of MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogels, being up to 83 kPa for the compressive strength when the amount was 11 wt %, which was eight times than that of PNIPAM hydrogel and four times than that of MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel. The electroconductibility was enhanced by the increase of AT-CNTs amounts. Meanwhile, the composite hydrogel also exhibited multiple shape memory and NIR photothermal conversion properties, and water temperature was increased from 26 °C to 56 °C within 8 min under the NIR irradiation. Thus, the AT-CNTs reinforced MAX-g-PNIPAM hydrogel possessed promising multifunctional properties, which offered many potential applications in the fields of biosensors, thermal-arrest technology, and drug-controlled release.

Fractionation of DMSO-Extracted and NaOH-Extracted Hemicelluloses by Gradient Ethanol Precipitation from Neosinocalamus affinis

Neosinocalamus affinis hemicelluloses were extracted with pure DMSO and 3% NaOH in sequence. The DMSO- and NaOH-extracted hemicelluloses were then successively fractionated by gradient ethanol precipitation. NaOH-extracted hemicellulosic fractions with different branch degree could be separated by gradient ethanol precipitation, while DMSO-extracted hemicellulosic fractions could not. FT-IR spectra showed that DMSO-extracted fractions have more complete structure, while NaOH-extracted fractions have no acetyl at all. The FT-IR and NMR revealed that the DMSO-extracted Neosinocalamus affinis hemicelluloses were 4-O-methyl-glucuronoarabinoxylans consisting of a linear (1→4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl backbone with branches at O-2,3 of acetyl, O-2 of 4-O-methyl-a-D glucuronic acid, and O-3 of arabinose.

Synthesis, characterization and adsorption behavior of cotton fiber based Schiff base

Structural modification of Cotton (Cot) fiber was carried out using ε-caprolactone (CL) as a monomer and oxydianiline (ODA) as a Schiff base forming agent in the presence of V₂O₅ catalyst in dimethylsulfoxide medium for 24h under air atmosphere (0.10MPa) at 80°C. The obtained products were analyzed for the characteristics and also for its adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye molecules. The ¹H NMR spectrum confirms the Schiff base formation at 8.7ppm. The adsorption study confirms the Pseudo second order kinetics with Langmuir adsorption model. The structurally modified Cot fiber based Schiff base exhibited the highest adsorption behavior through chemical interaction forces. The thermodynamic parameters were determined and confirmed the endothermic adsorption process.

Organic Catalysis for Ring-Opening Graft Polymerization of p-Dioxanone with Xylan in Ionic liquid

Recently, organic catalysis has become a powerful alternative to the use of more traditional metal-based catalysts. In this study, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), and 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) were applied to mediate the ring-opening graft polymerization (ROGP) of p-dioxanone (PDO) with xylan-based hemicelluloses in ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl). Excellent control of the molar ratio of the catalyst to anhydroxylose units (AXU) in xylan was found for a good tuning of the weight percent gain (WPG) of xylan-graft-poly(p-dioxanone) (xylan-g-PPDO) copolymers. As a result, the maximum WPG of xylan-g-PPDO copolymers was 431.07% (DMAP/AXU of 2/1), 316.72% (DBU/AXU of 0.2/1), and 323.15% (TBD/AXU of 0.2/1), respectively. The structure of xylan-g-PPDO copolymers was characterized with FT-IR and NMR. The thermal properties of copolymers were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and a significant difference was observed regarding the transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (Tm), and crystallization temperature (Tc).
