Abstract
In this study, three Gemini cationic surfactants related to thiazol-2-amine with three hydrocarbon chain lengths including 3-hexylthiazol-3-ium (TAC6), 3-dodecylthiazol-3-ium (TAC12) and octadecylthiazol3-ium (TAC18) were prepared. Surfactant structures were confirmed with IR and 1HNMR Spectroscopies. Critical micelle concentrations for all surfactants in 15% DMSO-Water solvent were measured using conductometric, refractometric, and densitometric techniques. Thermodynamics parameters were computed and explained. Also, enhancing properties of all surfactants were indicated under the effect of two concentrations, 0.001 M and 0.01 M, of six inorganic salts including Cl-, Br-, I-, Co+2, Cu+2, and Mn+2 radicals using conductivity and refractive index measurements. All techniques used to measure critical micelles concentration showed a good convergence in measuring CMC values and the behavior of all surfactants in 15% DMSO-water solvent. Increasing the binding constant of the counter ion and association constant reflects the effect of hydrocarbon chain length increment on enhancing micelle formation, where TAC 18 was shown as the lowest CMC in all applied measurements. Modeling the density of all surfactant solutions under study indicates an increase in hydrophobic polarizability with an increase in the molecular weight of the surfactant. Inorganic salts decreased the CMC of all surfactants with the increase in Gibbs free energy of micellization which ensures easier formation of more stable micelles in the presence of a salt solution. The effect of salts on decreasing CMC for all surfactants under study was arranged in the following order: Mn+2 < Cu+2 < Co+2 for cationic radicals and I- < Br- < Cl- for anionic radicals.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exist in contaminated groundwater, surface water, soil, and sediments from use of aqueous film forming foams (AFFFs). Under these conditions PFAS exhibit unusual behavior due to their surfactant properties, namely, aggregation and surface activity. Environmental factors such as salinity can affect these properties, and complicate efforts to monitor PFAS. The effect of high salinity matrices on the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of a AFFF formulation manufactured by 3M and the surface accumulation of PFAS was assessed with surface tension isotherm measurements and bench-scale experiments quantifying PFAS at the air-water interface. Conditions typical of brackish and saline waters substantially depressed the CMC of the AFFF by over 50% and increased the interfacial mass accumulation of PFAS in the AFFF mixture by up to a factor of 3, relative to values measured in ultrapure water. These results indicate that high salinity matrices increase the aggregation and surface activity of PFAS in mixtures, which are key properties affecting their transport.

Abstract
Critical micelle concentration (CMC) is one of the main physico-chemical properties of surface-active agents, also known as surfactants, with diverse theoretical and industrial applications. It is influenced by basic parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity, and the chemical structure of surfactants. Most studies have only estimated CMC at fixed conditions based on the surfactant's chemical parameters. In the present study, we aimed to develop a set of novel and applicable models for estimating CMC of well-known anionic surfactants by considering both the molecular properties of surfactants and basic affecting factors such as salinity, pH, and temperature as modeling parameters. We employed the quantitative-structural property relationship technique to employ the molecular parameters of surfactant ions. We collected 488 CMC values from literature for 111 sodium-based anionic surfactants, including sulfate types, sulfonate, benzene sulfonate, sulfosuccinate, and polyoxyethylene sulfate. We computed 1410 optimized molecular descriptors for each surfactant using Dragon software to be utilized in the modelling processes. The enhanced replacement method was used for selecting the most effective descriptors for the CMC. A multivariate linear model and two non-linear models are the outputs of the present study. The non-linear models were produced using two robust machine learning approaches, stochastic gradient boosting (SGB) trees and genetic programming (GP). Statistical assessment showed highly applicable and acceptable accuracy of the newly developed models (RSGB2 = 0.999395 and RGP2 = 0.954946). The ultimate results showed the superiority and greater ability of the SGB method for making confident predictions.

Abstract
Green dispersants are so-called "green" because they are renewable (from bio-based sources), non-volatile (from ionic liquids), or are from naturally available solvents (vegetable oils). In this review, the effectiveness of different types of green dispersants, namely, protein isolates and hydrolysates from fish and marine wastes, biosurfactants from bacterial and fungal strains, vegetable-based oils such as soybean lecithin and castor oils, as well as green solvents like ionic liquids are reviewed. The challenges and opportunities offered by these green dispersants are also elucidated. The effectiveness of these dispersants varies widely and depends on oil type, dispersant hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and seawater conditions. However, their advantages lie in their relatively low toxicity and desirable physico-chemical properties, which make them potentially ecofriendly and effective dispersants for future oil spill response.

Abstract
The effect of various media (aqueous, NaCl, urea (U) and thiourea (TU)) on the micellization and adsorption activity of varied mixtures of imipramine hydrochloride (IMP) and benzethonium chloride (BZCl) is investigated via tensiometry. In an aqueous medium, the interactions between IMP and BZCl are also evaluated using UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopy. The interaction between components increases with increased mole fraction (α 1) of BZCl in the mixed system (IMP + BZCl). Different parameters, such as micellar and the mixed monolayer component composition, the interaction parameters of the solution and the interface, the activity coefficients of the components in solution and at the interface, and thermodynamic parameters, are computed using different proposed theoretical models (i.e. Clint, Motomura, Rubingh and Rosen). The cmc values obtained for the pure components and mixtures (IMP + BZCl) of all the compositions are found to be less in NaCl than in the aqueous solution while found more in the presence of U or TU. TU is more effective in increasing the cmc of the pure and mixed systems than U. The Gibbs free energy ( Δ G mic ∘ ) values of the studied pure and mixed systems are negative, showing the spontaneous nature of the reaction.

Abstract
The importance of lipopeptide micelles in environmental applications has been highlighted. These vessels exhibit various sizes, shapes, and surface properties under different environmental conditions. An in-depth understanding of the tunable assembling behavior of biosurfactant micelles is of great importance for their applications. However, a systematic review of such behaviors with assorted micro/nano micellar structures under given environmental conditions, particularly under low temperature and high salinity, remains untapped. Such impacts on their environmental applications have yet to be summarized. This review tried to fill the knowledge gaps by providing a comprehensive summary of the recent knowledge advancement in genetically regulated lipopeptides production, micelles associated decontamination mechanisms in low temperature and high salinity environments, and up-to-date environmental applications. This work is expected to deliver valuable insights to guide lipopeptide design and discovery. The mechanisms concluded in this study could inspire the forthcoming research efforts in the advanced environmental application of lipopeptide micelles.

Abstract
Two aerobic endospore-forming bacteria (AEFB), isolates SAB19 and SAD18, capable of biosurfactant production were isolated from a sediment core sampled from Mfabeni peatland, St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The isolates were screened for biosurfactant activity using drop collapse assay, hemolysis assay, oil spreading assay, emulsification, and surface tension measurement. The effect of environmental parameters--temperature [35 - 100 °C], pH [3.0 - 10.0], and salinity [0.5 - 15%]--on biosurfactant stability was also determined. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography in conjunction with electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC ESI-TOF MS) analysis revealed that both isolates produced surfactin isomers and a common mass peak of m/z 1326.1 that was ascribed to a precursor of the antibiotic plantazolicin (PZN). Isolate SAD18 was also found to produce the lipopeptides fengycin and iturin. Taxonomic classification based on partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that isolates SAB19 and SAD18 belonged to the Brevibacillus and Bacillus genera, respectively. The GenBank accession numbers obtained for SAB19 and SAD18 are MW429226 and MW441217. Biosurfactant extracts from isolate SAD18 exhibited the greatest level of surfactant activity and stability over the range of environmental parameters tested. Although no novel biosurfactants were identified, it was confirmed that the peatland environment represents an untapped source of microbial diversity with potential biotechnological applications.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the behaviour of rhamnolipid and Greenzyme in brine solutions relevant to hydrocarbon reservoir. Prior to this work, several studies only reported the behaviour of the biosurfactants dissolved in sodium chloride solutions of varied salinity. The results of this study are relevant to the application of the biosurfactants in enhanced oil recovery, during which the compounds are injected into reservoir saturated with formation water, typically of high salinity and complex composition. Surface tension and conductivity methods were used to determine the critical micelle concentrations of the biosurfactants, Gibbs surface excess concentrations and standard free energy at water-air interface. The results show that rhamnolipid and Greenzyme could reduce the surface tension of water from 72.1 ± 0.2 mN/m to 34.7 ± 0.4 mN/m and 47.1 ± 0.1 mN/m respectively. They were also found to be stable in high salinity and high temperature with rhamnolipid being sensitive to brine salinity, composition and pH while Greenzyme showed tolerance for high salinity. Furthermore, the Gibbs standard free energy of micellisation shows that rhamnolipid and Greenzyme have the tendency to spontaneously form micelles with rhamnolipid showing more surface adsorption. However from maximal Gibbs surface excess concentration calculations, Greenzyme monomers tend to favour aggregation more than that of rhamnolipid.

Abstract
Amino acid-based surfactants are used in academics and industry. Sodium N-dodecanoyl sarcosinate (SDDS) is such an amino acid-based surfactant having applications in pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic formulations. Although the surface properties of this surfactant have been studied in the presence of univalent cationic and anionic salts, there is no report on such solution in the presence of higher valencies. In this experiment, critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDDS from tensiometry, conductometry, and fluorimetry has been determined. In each case, CMC decreases with increasing salt concentration. Counterion binding of micelles (β), diffusion coefficient (D 0), and surface properties, e.g., Gibbs free energy for micellization (ΔG m 0), Gibbs surface excess (Γmax), area of exclusion per surfactant monomer (A min), surface pressure at CMC (πcmc), etc., have been evaluated using methods such as tensiometry, conductometry, and fluorimetry. The hydrodynamic radius of SDDS in the presence of different salts was measured by the light scattering method. Aggregation number and shape of micelle have been determined by small-angle neutron scattering experiment. The nature of amphiphilic packing and the aggregation numbers of the assemblies have also been explored. The results from different experiments have been rationalized and represented systematically.

Abstract
Clinical application of injectable, thermoresponsive hydrogels is hindered by lack of degradability and controlled drug release. To overcome these challenges, a family of thermoresponsive, ABC triblock polymer-based hydrogels has been engineered to degrade and release drug cargo through either oxidative or hydrolytic/enzymatic mechanisms dictated by the "A" block composition. Three ABC triblock copolymers are synthesized with varying "A" blocks, including oxidation-sensitive poly(propylene sulfide), slow hydrolytically/enzymatically degradable poly(ε-caprolactone), and fast hydrolytically/enzymatically degradable poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide), forming the respective formulations PPS135-b-PDMA152-b-PNIPAAM225 (PDN), PCL85-b-PDMA150-b-PNIPAAM150 (CDN), and PLGA60-b-PDMA148-b-PNIPAAM152 (LGDN). For all three polymers, hydrophilic poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) and thermally responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) comprise the "B" and "C" blocks, respectively. These copolymers form micelles in aqueous solutions at ambient temperature that can be preloaded with small molecule drugs. These solutions quickly transition into hydrogels upon heating to 37 °C, forming a supra-assembly of physically crosslinked, drug-loaded micelles. PDN hydrogels are selectively degraded under oxidative conditions while CDN and LGDN hydrogels are inert to oxidation but show differential rates of hydrolytic/enzymatic decomposition. All three hydrogels are cytocompatible in vitro and in vivo, and drug-loaded hydrogels demonstrate differential release kinetics in vivo corresponding with their specific degradation mechanism. These collective data highlight the potential cell and drug delivery use of this tunable class of ABC triblock polymer thermogels.
