Impact of Nearly Water-Insoluble Additives on the Properties of Vesicular Suspensions

Advanced Eco-Friendly Formulations of Guar Biopolymer-Based Textile Conditioners

Fabric conditioners are household products used to impart softness and fragrance to textiles. They are colloidal dispersions of cationic double chain surfactants that self-assemble in vesicles. These surfactants are primarily derived from palm oil chemical modification. Reducing the content of these surfactants allows to obtain products with lower environmental impact. Such a reduction, without adverse effects on the characteristics of the softener and its performance, can be achieved by adding hydrophilic biopolymers. Here, we review the role of guar biopolymers modified with cationic or hydroxyl-propyl groups, on the physicochemical properties of the formulation. Electronic and optical microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray scattering and rheology of vesicles dispersion in the absence and presence of guar biopolymers are analyzed. Finally, the deposition of the new formulation on cotton fabrics is examined through scanning electron microscopy and a new protocol based on fluorescent microscopy. With this methodology, it is possible to quantify the deposition of surfactants on cotton fibers. The results show that the approach followed here can facilitate the design of sustainable home-care products.

Impact of Additives on the Microstructural Properties of DIDMAMS Bilayers: Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

To further understand the mechanism of the impact of perfume raw materials (PRMs) such as allyl heptoate (AHT) and cashmeran (CMR) on distearoyl isopropyl dimethylammonium methyl sulfate (DIDMAMS) bilayers, 90 ns molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the structure of bilayers consisting of DIDMAMS and PRMs at 350 K on the molecular scale. Structural properties such as density profiles, order parameters, radial distribution functions (RDFs), and bilayer thickness were analyzed. The bilayers appear to be the structure of the ripple phase whether PRMs are added or not. The RDF and density profiles show that CMR molecules tend to locate in the region close to head groups and AHT molecules prefer to uniformly distribute among hydrocarbon chains. The special distribution of CMR molecules results in hydrocarbon chains twining around CMR molecules. The existence of CMR molecules between bilayers and the consequent highest bilayer thickness may be the main cause of higher viscosity. We expect that this work can help to screen stable vesicular formula and understand the relationship between microstructures of the vesicles and macroscopic fluidic properties.

Design of eco-friendly fabric softeners: Structure, rheology and interaction with cellulose nanocrystals

HYPOTHESIS

Concentrated fabric softeners are water-based formulations containing around 10-15 wt% of double tailed esterquat surfactants primarily synthesized from palm oil. In recent patents, it was shown that a significant part of the surfactant contained in today's formulations can be reduced by circa 50% and replaced by natural guar polymers without detrimental effects on the deposition and softening performances. We presently study the structure and rheology of these softener formulations and identify the mechanisms at the origin of these effects.

EXPERIMENTS

The polymer additives used are guar gum polysaccharides, one cationic and one modified through addition of hydroxypropyl groups. Formulations with and without guar polymers are investigated using optical and cryo-transmission electron microscopy, small-angle light and X-ray scattering and finally rheology. Similar techniques are applied to study the phase behavior of softener and cellulose nanocrystals considered here as a model for cotton.

FINDINGS

The esterquat surfactants are shown to assemble into micron-sized vesicles in the dilute and concentrated regimes. In the former, guar addition in small amounts does not impair the vesicular structure and stability. In the concentrated regime, cationic guars induce a local crowding associated to depletion interactions and leads to the formation of a local lamellar order. In rheology, adjusting the polymer concentration at 1/10th that of the surfactant is sufficient to offset the decrease of the elastic property associated with the surfactant reduction. In conclusion, we have shown that through an appropriate choice of natural additives it is possible to lower the concentration of surfactants in fabric conditioners by about half, a result that could represent a significant breakthrough in current home care formulations.

Effects of Flow and Bulk Vesicle Concentration on Supported Lipid Bilayer Formation

Supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) have been used extensively in a variety of biotechnology applications and fundamental studies exploring lipid behavior. Despite their widespread use, various physicochemical parameters have yet to be thoroughly investigated for their impact on SLB formation. In this work, we have studied the importance of flow in inducing the rupture of surface adsorbed chicken egg-derived l-α-phosphatidylcholine (egg PC) vesicles on silica and gold surfaces via quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). On silica at 25 °C, egg PC vesicles were found to adsorb in a flattened configuration (∼13 nm thick, compared to bulk vesicle diameters of ∼165 nm) but only undergo a transition to a stable SLB under flow conditions. In the absence of flow, an increase in system temperature to 37 °C was able to promote vesicle rupture and SLB formation on silica with a 10 times lower rupture time, compared to rupture under continuous flow (175 μL/min flow rate). Gold surfaces, with their increased hydrophobicity, led to less vesicle flattening once adsorbed (structures ∼60 nm thick), and did not support vesicle rupture or SLB formation, even at flow rates of up to 650 μL/min. We also showed that, under continuous flow conditions, vesicle adsorption rates on silica surfaces follow Langmuir kinetics, with an inverse dependence on bulk vesicle concentration, while an empirical power law dependence of vesicle rupture time on bulk vesicle concentration was observed. Ultimately, this work elicits fundamental insight into the importance of flow and bulk vesicle concentration in the adsorbed vesicle rupture process during SLB formation using QCM-D.
