Abstract
Are deep eutectic solvents (DESs) a promising alternative to conventional solvents? Perhaps, but their development is hindered by a plethora of misconceptions. These are carefully analyzed here, beginning with the very meaning of DESs, which has strayed far beyond its original scope of eutectic mixtures of Lewis or Brønsted acids and bases. Instead, a definition that is grounded on thermodynamic principles and distinguishes between eutectic and deep eutectic is encouraged, and the types of precursors that can be used to prepare DESs are reviewed. Landmark works surrounding the sustainability, stability, toxicity, and biodegradability of these solvents are also discussed, revealing piling evidence that numerous DESs reported thus far, particularly those that are choline based, lack sufficient sustainability-related traits to be considered green solvents. Finally, emerging DES applications are reviewed, emphasizing their most remarkable feature: the ability to liquefy a solid compound with a target property, allowing its use as a liquid solvent.

Intermolecular Interactions of Edaravone in Aqueous Solutions of Ethaline and Glyceline Inferred from Experiments and Quantum Chemistry Computations. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2023; 28:molecules28020629. [PMID: 36677688 PMCID: PMC9863297 DOI: 10.3390/molecules28020629] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/10/2022] [Revised: 12/31/2022] [Accepted: 01/03/2023] [Indexed: 01/11/2023]
Abstract
Edaravone, acting as a cerebral protective agent, is administered to treat acute brain infarction. Its poor solubility is addressed here by means of optimizing the composition of the aqueous choline chloride (ChCl)-based eutectic solvents prepared with ethylene glycol (EG) or glycerol (GL) in the three different designed solvents compositions. The slurry method was used for spectroscopic solubility determination in temperatures between 298.15 K and 313.15 K. Measurements confirmed that ethaline (ETA = ChCl:EG = 1:2) and glyceline (GLE = ChCl:GL = 1:2) are very effective solvents for edaravone. The solubility at 298.15 K in the optimal compositions was found to be equal xE = 0.158 (cE = 302.96 mg/mL) and xE = 0.105 (cE = 191.06 mg/mL) for glyceline and ethaline, respectively. In addition, it was documented that wetting of neat eutectic mixtures increases edaravone solubility which is a fortunate circumstance not only from the perspective of a solubility advantage but also addresses high hygroscopicity of eutectic mixtures. The aqueous mixture with 0.6 mole fraction of the optimal composition yielded solubility values at 298.15 K equal to xE = 0.193 (cE = 459.69 mg/mL) and xE = 0.145 (cE = 344.22 mg/mL) for glyceline and ethaline, respectively. Since GLE is a pharmaceutically acceptable solvent, it is possible to consider this as a potential new liquid form of this drug with a tunable dosage. In fact, the recommended amount of edaravone administered to patients can be easily achieved using the studied systems. The observed high solubility is interpreted in terms of intermolecular interactions computed using the Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) approach and corrected for accounting of electron correlation, zero-point vibrational energy and basis set superposition errors. Extensive conformational search allowed for identifying the most probable contacts, the thermodynamic and geometric features of which were collected and discussed. It was documented that edaravone can form stable dimers stabilized via stacking interactions between five-membered heterocyclic rings. In addition, edaravone can act as a hydrogen bond acceptor with all components of the studied systems with the highest affinities to ion pairs of ETA and GLE. Finally, the linear regression model was formulated, which can accurately estimate edaravone solubility utilizing molecular descriptors obtained from COSMO-RS computations. This enables the screening of new eutectic solvents for finding greener replacers of designed solvents. The theoretical analysis of tautomeric equilibria confirmed that keto-isomer edaravone is predominant in the bulk liquid phase of all considered deep eutectic solvents (DES).

Abstract
In this review, the comprehensive summary of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) for the last two years is covered. The remarkable applications of 2D-COS in diverse fields using many types of probes and perturbations for the last two years are highlighted. IR spectroscopy is still the most popular probe in 2D-COS during the last two years. Applications in fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy are also very popularly used. In the external perturbations applied in 2D-COS, variations in concentration, pH, and relative compositions are dramatically increased during the last two years. Temperature is still the most used effect, but it is slightly decreased compared to two years ago. 2D-COS has been applied to diverse systems, such as environments, natural products, polymers, food, proteins and peptides, solutions, mixtures, nano materials, pharmaceuticals, and others. Especially, biological and environmental applications have significantly emerged. This survey review paper shows that 2D-COS is an actively evolving and expanding field.

Abstract
Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), of which dichloromethane (DCM) has become one of the main components because of its extensive use and strong volatility, are recognized as extremely hazardous and refractory pollutants in the atmosphere. The efficient treatment of DCM is of great significance to the protection of environment and human health. In this work, the strategy of DCM capture with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with different hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) was proposed and systematically investigated. The experimental results show that tetrabutylphosphonium chloride: levulinic acid ([P4444][Cl]-LEV) presents the most excellent DCM absorption capacity among all DESs studied and considerable capacity in [P4444][Cl]-LEV (1:2) with 899 mg DCM/g DES (5.58 mol DCM/mol DES) at 30 °C and DCM partial pressure of 0.3 bar can be achieved. The microscopic absorption mechanism is explored by 1HNMR and FT-IR spectra as well as quantum chemistry calculations, indicating that the absorption is a physical process. The interaction energy analysis suggests that the greater the interaction energy between DES and DCM, the greater the saturated absorption capacity of DCM. The hydrogen bond (HB) contributes most to the weak interaction between DCM and HBA/HBD, and both HBA and HBD play an important role in the absorption of DCM.

Abstract
Various eutectic systems have been proposed and studied over the past few decades. Most of the studies have focused on three typical types of eutectics: eutectic metals, eutectic salts, and deep eutectic solvents. On the one hand, they are all eutectic systems, and their eutectic principle is the same. On the other hand, they are representative of metals, inorganic salts, and organic substances, respectively. They have applications in almost all fields related to chemistry. Their different but overlapping applications stem from their very different properties. In addition, the proposal of new eutectic systems has greatly boosted the development of cross-field research involving chemistry, materials, engineering, and energy. The goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of these typical eutectics and describe task-specific strategies to address growing demands.

Abstract
In the last decade, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have gained more and more attention due to their green, convenient preparation, low toxicity and biodegradability. It is widely used in various fields, especially in the extraction of active components from plants, formed by the combination of hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) and hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) at a certain condition. In this article, six preparation methods of NADESs were summarized and the interactions that occur in the eutectic behavior of NADES including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction and van der Waals force were also reviewed. What is more, its significant extraction capacity on flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids and plant pigments endows its extensive applications in the extraction of active components from medicinal plants. Extraction factors including solvents properties (viscosity, carbon chain length, number of hydroxyl groups), extraction condition (water content, extraction temperature, extraction time, solid-liquid ratio), extraction method and recycling method were discussed. In addition, NADESs can also be combined with other technologies, like molecular imprinting, monolithic column, to achieve efficient and specific extraction of active ingredients. Further systematic studies on the biodegradability and biotoxicity are put forward to be urgent.

Abstract
A new strategy was developed to produce cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and films from raw elephant grass using deep eutectic solvents and a recyclable spent coffee-derived solid acid (SC-SO3H) catalyst with assistance of ultrasonic disintegration and a suction filtration film forming method. The effects of a solid acid and reused solid acid were comprehensively studied by comparing with catalyst-free conditions and using sulfuric acid as the catalyst. The CNF fibers obtained from this novel SC-SO3H catalyst method showed the longest fiber length. The corresponding films achieved the strongest tensile strength of 79.8 MPa and the elongation at break of 13.6%, and best thermostability. In addition, the performance of CNFs and films prepared by the fourth recovered SC-SO3H-4 catalyst was close to that obtained with the first use. The SC-SO3H could be reused by a simple decantation method, meaning this novel method has the potential for green and sustainable preparation of CNFs and films. A new strategy was developed to produce cellulose nanofibrils and films from elephant grass using deep eutectic solvents and a recyclable solid acid catalyst with assistance of ultrasonic disintegration and a suction filtration film forming method.![]()

Abstract
High volatility would lead to a highly flammable hazard, explosion danger, low regeneration efficiency and air pollution. Eutectic solvents (ESs) are assumed to be nonvolatile; however, the assumption is not correct. Here, we, for the first time, find that superbase-derived ESs are highly volatile. Even at room temperature (i.e., 25 °C) and atmospheric pressure, the mass loss of ESs could reach as high as 43.5% after 20 h of exposure. Superbase-derived ESs are promising solvents for CO2 capture, and they are also highly volatile after CO2 capture. We found that typical ethylene glycol : 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (EG : DBU (4 : 1)) has a three-stage volatilizing mechanism. EG and DBU volatilize first by breaking weak hydrogen-bonding interactions (1st stage), followed by the destruction of strong hydrogen-bonding interactions (2nd stage), and finally by destroying much stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions (3rd stage). This work presents a new horizon that ESs and their mixture with CO2 are highly volatile, which is helpful for mitigating laboratory explosion, combustion hazards, air pollution and designing new types of ESs with negligible volatility.

Abstract
The release of certain gases to the atmosphere is controlled in many countries owing to their negative impact on the environment and human health. These gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). Considering the major contribution of greenhouse gases to global warming and climate change, mitigation of these gases is one of the world's primary challenges. Nevertheless, the commercial processes used to capture these gases suffer from several drawbacks, including the use of volatile solvents, generation of hazardous byproducts, and high-energy demand. Research in green chemistry has resulted in the synthesis of potentially green solvents that are non-toxic, efficient, and environmentally friendly. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are novel solvents that upon wise choice of their constituents can be green and tunable with high biocompatibility, high degradability, and low cost. Consequently, the capture of toxic gases by DESs is promising and environmentally friendly and has attracted much attention during the last decade. Here, we review recent results on capture of these gases using different types of DESs. The effect of different parameters, such as chemical structure, molar ratio, temperature, and pressure, on capture efficiency is discussed.

Abstract
The use of eco-compatible synthetic procedures in organic reactions and, in particular, in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, has recently received a great deal of attention and considerable progress has been achieved in this area in the last years. This review summarizes the approaches currently employed to synthesize heterocyclic compounds by catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions in green solvents in the last six years. Our choice to do a selection of the literature from 2014 to 2019 was made considering the absence of a recent review about this period, to our knowledge. Several examples to construct heterocycles by 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions will be discussed in this work subdivided in function of the most important class of non-conventional and green solvents, i.e., ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DES), and water.
