Innovations in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): Pioneering adsorption approaches for persistent organic pollutant (POP) removal

Adsorption is a promising way to remove persistent organic pollutants (POPs), a major environmental issue. With their high porosity and vast surface areas, MOFs are suited for POP removal due to their excellent adsorption capabilities. This review addresses the intricate principles of MOF-mediated adsorption and helps to future attempts to mitigate organic water pollution. This review examines the complicated concepts of MOF-mediated adsorption, including MOF synthesis methodologies, adsorption mechanisms, and material tunability and adaptability. MOFs' ability to adsorb POPs via electrostatic forces, acid-base interactions, hydrogen bonds, and pi-pi interactions is elaborated. This review demonstrates its versatility in eliminating many types of contaminants. Functionalizing, adding metal nanoparticles, or changing MOFs after they are created can improve their performance and remove contaminants. This paper also discusses MOF-based pollutant removal issues and future prospects, including adsorption capacity, selectivity, scale-up for practical application, stability, and recovery. These obstacles can be overcome by rationally designing MOFs, developing composite materials, and improving material production and characterization. Overall, MOF technology research and innovation hold considerable promise for environmental pollution solutions and sustainable remediation. Desorption and regeneration in MOFs are also included in the review, along with methods for improving pollutant removal efficiency and sustainability. Case studies of effective MOF regeneration and scaling up for practical deployment are discussed, along with future ideas for addressing these hurdles.

Holmium-Containing Metal-Organic Frameworks as Modifiers for PEBA-Based Membranes

Recently, there has been an active search for new modifiers to create hybrid polymeric materials for various applications, in particular, membrane technology. One of the topical modifiers is metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which can significantly alter the characteristics of obtained mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, new holmium-based MOFs (Ho-MOFs) were synthesized for polyether block amide (PEBA) modification to develop novel MMMs with improved properties. The study of Ho-MOFs, polymers and membranes was carried out by methods of X-ray phase analysis, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, dynamic and kinematic viscosity, static and dynamic light scattering, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements. Synthesized Ho-MOFs had different X-ray structures, particle forms and sizes depending on the ligand used. To study the effect of Ho-MOF modifier on membrane transport properties, PEBA/Ho-MOFs membrane retention capacity was evaluated in vacuum fourth-stage filtration for dye removal (Congo Red, Fuchsin, Glycine thymol blue, Methylene blue, Eriochrome Black T). Modified membranes demonstrated improved flux and rejection coefficients for dyes containing amino groups: Congo Red, Fuchsin (PEBA/Ho-1,3,5-H3btc membrane possessed optimal properties: 81% and 68% rejection coefficients for Congo Red and Fuchsin filtration, respectively, and 0.7 L/(m2s) flux).

Recent advances in application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbent and catalyst in removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the aquatic environment is causing widespread concern due to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and possible environmental risk. These contaminants are produced daily in large quantities and released into water bodies. Traditional wastewater treatment plants are ineffective at degrading these pollutants. As a result, the development of long-term and effective POP removal techniques is critical. In water, adsorption removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs have been identified as energy and cost-efficient solutions. Both technologies have received a lot of attention for their efforts to treat the world's wastewater. Photocatalytic removal of POPs is a promising, effective, and long-lasting method, while adsorption removal of persistent POPs represents a simple, practical method, particularly in decentralized systems and isolated areas. It is critical to develop new adsorbents/photocatalysts with the desired structure, tunable chemistry, and maximum adsorption sites for highly efficient removal of POPs. As a class of recently created multifunctional porous materials, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer tremendous prospects in adsorptive removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs for water remediation. This review defines POPs and discusses current research on adsorptive and photocatalytic POP removal using emerging MOFs for each type of POPs.

Adsorption of Methyl Orange on a Novel Palygorskite/UiO-66 Nanocomposite

Herein, a novel composite material containing UiO-66 and palygorskite (Pal) clay mineral was prepared using a facile one-pot synthesis process. The material was studied using a variety of techniques and applied as did not affect the structure of the metal-organic framework (MOF) part, but induced a small increase in specific surface area. The developed Pal/UiO-66 composite presented excellent adsorption efficiency against MO removal, as evidenced by detailed kinetic and isotherm experiments. An impressive maximum adsorption capacity at equilibrium was evidenced; 340 mg g−1 at pH = 5 and T = 25 °C. This corresponds to a 34.5 % increase compared with pure UiO-66, considering only the MOF content. Furthermore, the Pal/UiO-66 composite was proven stable and highly recyclable, losing less than 9% of the removal capacity after five consecutive cycles. The study highlights the synergistic effect of the coupling of MOF structures with low-cost and abundant clay minerals for the development of advanced absorbents.

Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-incorporated Pebax composite membrane for improved permselectivity in organic solvent nanofiltration

Thanks to the characteristic hollow cavity structure and sustainable and nontoxic macrocycle molecule feature, cyclodextrins have been used as building block to fabricate organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes with enhanced permeability and selectivity. Herein, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) was incorporated into a poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax) layer on a polysulfone support, followed by crosslinking with toluene 2,4-diisocyanate to prepare a crosslinked HP-β-CD/Pebax (CHP) membrane. By adjusting the initial HP-β-CD concentration (x) and crosslinking reaction time (y), the microporous structure and surface morphology of CHP x-y (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75; y = 5, 10, 15) membranes could be manipulated. The OSN performances of the CHP x-y membranes were evaluated by the removal of dyes in methanol solution. The results revealed that the optimal CHP0.5-10 membrane exhibited a high methanol permeance of 8.7 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, high dye rejection (>96%), and high running stability (at least 336 h), due to the intrinsically microporous structure and surface morphology. This work would inspire the further development of cyclodextrins and other macrocyclic molecules in the preparation of OSN membranes and provide a promising strategy to fabricate state-of-the-art membranes for the efficient separation of organic solvent reclamation and removal of organic pollutants.

Adsorptive removal of dyes from wastewater using a metal-organic framework: A review

Water pollution from synthetic dyes is a growing environmental concern because many dyes have carcinogenic effects on humans and aquatic life. Adsorption is a widely used technology for the separation and removal of dyes from wastewater. However, the dye removal process using conventional adsorbents is not sufficiently efficient for industrial wastewater. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) addresses these drawbacks. MOF showed excellent dye removal and degradation capacity owing to its multifunctionality, water-stability, large surface area, tunable pore size and recyclability. Magnetic MOFs retained excellent performance up to several consecutive cycles. Modified MOFs performed as Fenton-like catalysis process which generated abundant reactive radicals that degraded complex organic dyes into simple and less toxic forms which were further adsorbed onto the MOF. This review systematically compiles in-depth studies on the adsorptive removal of dyes from wastewater, MOF adsorption mechanisms, major influencing factors, to adsorption efficiency of MOFs. While all MOFs adsorb dyes through electrostatic attraction, the type of MOF, presence of functional groups, ligands, and pH significantly control the adsorption mechanism. Before developing an MOF, optimization and upgradation of factors and interaction between available adsorption site and adsorbate is needed. Finally, the prospects and new frontiers of MOFs in sustainable water treatment is discussed.

Post synthetically modified IRMOF-3 for efficient recovery and selective sensing of U(vi) from aqueous medium

A simple and efficient route to develop various novel functionalized MOF materials for rapid and excellent recovery of U(vi) from aqueous medium, along with selective sensing has been demonstrated in the present study. In this connection, a set of four distinct post synthetically modified (PSM) iso-reticular metal organic frameworks were synthesized from IRMOF-3 namely, IRMOF-PC (2-pyridine carboxaldehyde), IRMOF-GA (glutaric anhydride), IRMOF-SMA (sulfamic acid), and IRMOF-DPC (diphenylphosphonic chloride) for the recovery and sensing of U(vi) from aqueous medium. The MOFs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder XRD, BET surface area analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), NMR (13C, 1H and 31P), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Among all MOFs, post synthetically modified IRMOF-SMA showed enhanced thermal stability of about 420 °C. The MOFs were investigated for U(vi) sorption studies using a batch technique. All the MOFs exhibit excellent sorption capacity towards U(vi) (>90%) and maximum uptake was observed at pH 6. Sorption capacity of MOFs have the following order; IRMOF-3-DPC (300 mg U g-1) > IRMOF-SMA (292 mg U g-1) > IRMOF-PC (289 mg U g-1) > IRMOF-GA (280 mg U g-1) > IRMOF-3 (273 mg U g-1). IRMOF-DPC shows rapid sorption of uranium within 5 min with excellent uptake of U(vi) (>99%). The desorption of U(vi) was examined with different eluents and 0.01 M HNO3 was found to be most effective. The fluorescence sensing studies of U(vi) via IRMOF-3 and its PSM MOFs revealed high sensitivity and selectivity towards U(vi) over other competing rare earth metal ions (La3+, Ce4+, Sm3+, Nd3+, Gd3+, and Eu3+), wherein IRMOF-GA displayed an impressive detection limit of 0.36 mg L-1 for U(vi).

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Liquid Phase Applications

In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted overwhelming attention. With readily tunable structures and functionalities, MOFs offer an unprecedentedly vast degree of design flexibility from enormous number of inorganic and organic building blocks or via postsynthetic modification to produce functional nanoporous materials. A large extent of experimental and computational studies of MOFs have been focused on gas phase applications, particularly the storage of low-carbon footprint energy carriers and the separation of CO2-containing gas mixtures. With progressive success in the synthesis of water- and solvent-resistant MOFs over the past several years, the increasingly active exploration of MOFs has been witnessed for widespread liquid phase applications such as liquid fuel purification, aromatics separation, water treatment, solvent recovery, chemical sensing, chiral separation, drug delivery, biomolecule encapsulation and separation. At this juncture, the recent experimental and computational studies are summarized herein for these multifaceted liquid phase applications to demonstrate the rapid advance in this burgeoning field. The challenges and opportunities moving from laboratory scale towards practical applications are discussed.

PEG@ZIF-8/PVDF Nanocomposite Membrane for Efficient Pervaporation Desulfurization via a Layer-by-Layer Technology

The desulfurization property of conventional mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) cannot meet the necessary demand due to particles aggregation and interface defects. Here, we put forward a layer-by-layer (LBL) approach to make a novel PEG@ZIF-8/poly(vinylidene difluoride)(PVDF) composite membrane for pervaporation desulfurization. In this way, a ZIF-8 layer is covered on the surface of the PVDF porous membrane via an in situ growth method. Then, a PEG layer is covered on the ZIF-8 layer by a casting method. Compared with pristine PEG membranes, the separation performance of the ZIF-8@PEG/PVDF nanocomposite membrane increased significantly. This can be attributed to the homogeneous ZIF-8 particle layer and better compatibility between the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) matrix and ZIF-8 particles. The membrane achieves a maximum total flux of 3.08 kg·m^-2·h^-1 at the third in situ growth cycles of ZIF-8 particles and a maximum sulfur enrichment factor of 7.6 at the sixth in situ growth cycles of ZIF-8 particles.
