Catalytic Upgrading of Coal Pyrolysis Gaseous Tar over Hierarchical Y-Type Zeolites Synthesized Using a Microwave Hydrothermal Method

Improving Fuel Properties and Hydrocarbon Content from Residual Fat Pyrolysis Vapors over Activated Red Mud Pellets in Two-Stage Reactor: Optimization of Reaction Time and Catalyst Content

Catalytic upgrading of vapors from pyrolysis of triglycerides materials is a promising approach to achieve better conversions of hydrocarbons and production of liquid biofuels. Catalytic cracking often shows incomplete conversion due to distillation of initial reaction products and the addition of a second catalytic reactor, whereas pyrolytic vapors are made in contact to a solid catalyst was applied to improve the physical-chemical properties and quality of bio-oil. This work investigated the effect of catalyst content and reaction time by catalytic upgrading from pyrolysis vapors of residual fat at 450 °C and 1.0 atmosphere, on the yields of reaction products, physicochemical properties (density, kinematic viscosity, refractive index, and acid value), and chemical composition of organic liquid products (OLP), over a catalyst fixed bed reactor, in semi pilot scale. Pellets of red mud chemically activated with 1.0 M HCl were used as catalysts. The thermal catalytic cracking of residual fat show OLP yields from 54.4 to 84.88 (wt.%), aqueous phase yields between 2.21 and 2.80 (wt.%), solid phase yields (coke) between 1.30 and 8.60 (wt.%), and gas yields from 11.61 to 34.22 (wt.%). The yields of OLP increases with catalyst content while those of aqueous, gaseous and solid phase decreases. For all experiments, the density, kinematic viscosity, and acid value of OLP decreases with reaction time. The GC-MS of liquid reaction products identified the presence of hydrocarbons and oxygenates. In addition, the hydrocarbon content in OLP increases with reaction time, while those of oxygenates decrease, reaching concentrations of hydrocarbons up to 95.35% (area.). The best results for the physicochemical properties and the maximum hydrocarbon content in OLP were obtained at 450 °C and 1.0 atmosphere, using a catalyst fixed bed reactor, with 5.0% (wt.) red mud pellets activated with 1.0 M HCl as catalyst.

High-Silica Layer-like Zeolites Y from Seeding-Free Synthesis and Their Catalytic Performance in Low-Density Polyethylene Cracking

Layer-like FAU-type zeolite Y was synthesized by an organosilane-assisted low-temperature hydrothermal method and its catalytic activity was verified in the low-density polyethylene (LDPE) cracking process. The synthesis procedure of high-silica layer-like zeolite Y was based on organosilane as a growth modifier, and for the first time, the seeding step was successfully avoided. The X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy studies, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the formation of pure FAU structure and zeolite particles of plate-like morphology arranged in the manner of the skeleton of a cuboctahedron. The in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic studies, low-temperature nitrogen sorption, and electron microscopy results provided detailed information on the obtained layer-like zeolite Y. The acidic and textural properties of layer-like zeolites Y were faced with the catalytic activity and selectivity in the cracking of LDPE. The quantitative assessment of catalyst selectivity performed in FT-IR/GC-MS operando studies pointed out that LDPE cracking over the layer-like material yielded value-added C₃-C₄ gases and C₅-C₆ liquid fraction at the expense of C₇₊ fraction. The detailed analysis of coke residue on the catalyst was also performed by means of FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and thermoprogrammed oxidation coupled with mass spectrometry for the detection of oxidation products. The acidic and textural properties gave a foundation for the catalytic performance and coking of catalysts.

State of the Art and Perspectives of Hierarchical Zeolites: Practical Overview of Synthesis Methods and Use in Catalysis

Microporous zeolites have proven to be of great importance in many chemical processes. Yet, they often suffer from diffusion limitations causing inefficient use of the available catalytically active sites. To address this problem, hierarchical zeolites have been developed, which extensively improve the catalytic performance. There is a multitude of recent literature describing synthesis of and catalysis with these hierarchical zeolites. This review attempts to organize and overview this literature (of the last 5 years), with emphasis on the most important advances with regard to synthesis and application of such zeolites. Special attention is paid to the most common and important 10- and 12-membered ring zeolites (MTT, TON, FER, MFI, MOR, FAU, and *BEA). In contrast to previous reviews, the research per zeolite topology is brought together and discussed here. This allows the reader to instantly find the best synthesis method in accordance to the desired zeolite properties. A summarizing graph is made available to enable the reader to select suitable synthesis procedures based on zeolite acidity and mesoporosity, the two most important tunable properties.
