Design and Application of Ag3PO4@Ag4V2O7 Z-Scheme Photocatalysts with a Micro-Nano Tube-Cluster Structure for the Co-Degradation of Nitrate and Ammonia in Wastewater

Enhanced nitrate reduction by metal deposited g-C3N4/rGO/TiO2 Z-schematic photocatalysts: Performance and mechanism comparison of Pd-Cu and Ag

Deposition of bimetals on Z-scheme photocatalysts has been reported to improve the nitrate nitrogen (NO3-) reduction properties. However, it is not clear whether bimetal deposition possesses advantage over single metal deposition and what is the different reaction mechanisms. In this work, the g-C3N4(Pd-Cu)/rGO/TiO2 and g-C3N4(Ag)/rGO/TiO2 composites with bimetallic Pd-Cu and single metal Ag deposited on the graphitic carbon nitride/reduced graphene oxide/titanium dioxide (g-C3N4/rGO/TiO2) Z-scheme photocatalyst were prepared, and their photocatalytic NO3- reduction properties and the mechanisms under visible light irradiation were studied. The results showed that the NO3- and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of g-C3N4(Pd-Cu)/rGO/TiO2 were 57.78% and 20.1%, respectively, 1.15 and 1.72 times higher than those of g-C3N4(Ag)/rGO/TiO2. This can be ascribed to that Pd-Cu enriched more electrons and absorbed more NO3- molecules due to the different charge densities, and the NO3- reduction process were enhanced by the staged NO3-→NO2- and NO2-→N2/NH4+ processes on Cu and Pd. The effects of reductive species were demonstrated to be photogenerated electrons > ·OH (·CO2-) > ·O2- in g-C3N4(Ag)/rGO/TiO2, while it was photogenerated electrons > ·O2- > ·OH (·CO2-) in g-C3N4(Pd-Cu)/rGO/TiO2, which may be caused by the better O2 reduction property of the latter. Finally, the cyclic experiment proved the good stability of both materials. This work provided some reference for design of metal deposited Z-scheme photocatalysts for various reduction reactions.

Bactericidal activity of Ag4V2O7/β-AgVO3 heterostructures against antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae

Although Ag-based materials are efficient against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, their high toxicity to living organisms represents a major challenge for obtaining useful products. In this work, we report the bactericidal activity of Ag₄V₂O₇/β-AgVO₃ heterostructures, which proved to be effective against Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 1706, a standard strain; A54970, a multidrug-resistant carbapenemase (KPC)-producing strain; A34057, a multidrug-resistant strain capable of producing extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL); and a community-isolated strain, A58240) at minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) as low as 62.5 μg/mL. This activity is higher than that reported for the individual silver vanadates (Ag₄V₂O₇ or β-AgVO₃) owing to the synergistic interactions between both semiconductors. However, the most efficient heterostructure was found to be toxic to mouse 3 T3 fibroblasts and to L. sativa and C. sativus seeds, as indicated by MTT ((4,5 - dimethylthiazol -2yl) 2,5 -diphenylbromide), neutral red assays and germination index measurements. The antimicrobial, phytotoxic and cytotoxic activities were all associated with an efficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the heterostructure, especially OH and O₂^- radicals. The ROS production by Ag₄V₂O₇/β-AgVO₃ heterostructures was measured through photodegradation studies with Rhodamine B. While the bactericidal activity of the heterostructures is promising, especially when compared to Ag-based materials, their use in practical applications will require encapsulation either to avoid leaching or to mitigate their toxicity to humans, animals and plants.

Selective reduction of nitrate into N2 by novel Z-scheme NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/BiVO4 heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Nitrate and its metabolites as common pollutants in water had attracted widespread attentions. Converting nitrate to nontoxic and harmless nitrogen via photocatalysis was a promising approach. In this study, a novel Z-scheme NH₂-MIL-101(Fe)/BiVO₄ heterojunction was successfully prepared. As-prepared Z-scheme heterojunction along with built-in electric field facilitated the charge separation and enhanced the photocatalytic activity in nitrate reduction. The results showed that 0.10-MBiVO photocatalyst exhibited the highest nitrate removal rate of 94.8% (initial concentration 100 mgN/L) and final selectivity to N₂ of 93.4% in 50 min under ultraviolet irradiation. Moreover, formic acid was proved as better hole scavenger compared with methanol and oxalic acid. And the concentration of formic acid had significant influence on the process of nitrate photocatalytic reduction. 0.10-MBiVO photocatalyst exhibited excellent reusability in the recycling tests, indicating its great potential in practical application of nitrate photocatalytic removal. The mechanism of the enhancement as well as reaction pathways for nitrate photocatalytic reduction on NH₂-MIL-101(Fe)/BiVO₄ were comprehensively explored and described at the end.

Porous cauliflower-like molybdenum disulfide/cadmium sulfide hybrid micro/nano structure: Enhanced visible light absorption ability and photocatalytic activity

Micro-/nanostructured materials can control the diffraction and propagation of light, thereby providing new optical properties that can be exploited to enhance photocatalytic processes. In this work, a series of the cauliflower-like MoS₂/CdS hybrid micro-/nanostructures is synthesized. These structures contain numerous cracks and pores that can enhance the absorption and utilization of light as well as shorten the distance for transferring photogenerated electrons to the catalyst surface. The results of ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance absorption spectra show that the composite material has enhanced absorption in the visible light region. Further investigation of the optical characteristics of the synthesized materials using a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation reveals that the cauliflower-like micro-/nanostructure increases the optical absorption intensity at the MoS₂/CdS interface. Notably, the MoS₂/CdS hybrid micro-/nanostructures exhibits high photocatalytic hydrogen production activity (9.5 mmol g^-1 h^-1) and long-lasting cycle stability. This work helps us to further understand the enhancement mechanism of light absorption and utilization by porous structural materials.

Fast and efficient degradation of water pollutant dyes and fungicide by novel sulfur-doped graphene oxide-modified Ag3PO4 nanocomposite

The sulfur-doped graphene oxide (sGO)-integrated Ag₃PO₄ composite displayed very high catalytic activity toward prominent water pollutants like textile dyes and fungicide under sunlight. The optimum amount of sGO doping was found as 5% for degradation. The novel composite degraded 99% of methylene blue (MB) in only 5 min of sunlight exposure, which is 16 and 8 times faster than Ag₃PO₄ and 5% GO-Ag₃PO₄. High mineralization was observed for MB with a total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 98% in 30 min. The composite mineralized rhodamine B, methyl orange, and acid red 18 dyes with a TOC removal above 95%. Moreover, a toxic dithiocarbamate fungicide thiram was degraded in 1 h with a TOC removal of 82% leaving less toxic thiourea. The formation of sGO-Ag₃PO₄ n-n heterojunction increases charge transport and photocatalytic activity of the composite to incredible extent along with hollow morphology and in situ formed Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs).

Self-induced synthesis under neutral conditions and novel visible light photocatalytic activity of Ag4V2O7 polyoxometalate

Ag₄V₂O₇ POM with a nanorod-bundle structure was designed under neutral conditions, which showed good visible photodegradation performance against chloramphenicol.
