110th Anniversary: A Perspective on Catalytic Oxidative Processes for Sustainable Water Remediation

Synthesis of mesoporous Fe/Al/La trimetallic oxide for photodegradation of various water-soluble dyes: Kinetic, mechanistic, and pH studies

Phase pure, trigonal, mesoporous Fe/Al/La trimetallic nano-oxide (abbreviated as FAL) was synthesized using energy efficient chemical route with bandgap 1.97 eV and S_BET = 50.02 m²/g and an average pore size of 8.95 nm for photodegradation of azo (di and tri) and thiazine class of dyes successfully. The valence band and conduction band potentials were calculated using the Mott-Schottky plot. The highest photodegradation efficiency was 93.85 ± 2% for reactive black 5 (RB5) at pH 7 under solar irradiation. The phase formation of FAL was confirmed by PXRD, TEM, and HRTEM analyses. The other characterizations include FESEM, Raman, EPR, UV, HPLC, LC-MS, etc. The presence of the metal centers and their corresponding oxidation states were confirmed by the SAEDS, elemental mapping, and XPS analyses respectively. FAL was also able to photodegrade direct blue 71 (DB71) and methylene blue (MB) under the same condition at different pH efficiently (pH 2-11). The photodegradation obeyed the pseudo-1st-order kinetics and was reusable up to 5 successive cycles. This study may be an efficient tool to meet UNs' SDG:6.

Structure and Surface Relaxation of CeO2 Nanoparticles Unveiled by Combining Real and Reciprocal Space Total Scattering Analysis

We present a combined real and reciprocal space structural and microstructural characterization of CeO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) exhibiting different crystallite sizes; ~3 nm CeO₂ NPs were produced by an inverse micellae wet synthetic path and then annealed at different temperatures. X-ray total scattering data were analyzed by combining real-space-based Pair Distribution Function analysis and the reciprocal-space-based Debye Scattering Equation method with atomistic models. Subtle atomic-scale relaxations occur at the nanocrystal surface. The structural analysis was corroborated by ab initio DFT and force field calculations; micro-Raman and electron spin resonance added important insights to the NPs' defective structure. The combination of the above techniques suggests a core-shell like structure of ultrasmall NPs. These exhibit an expanded outer shell having a defective fluorite structure, while the inner shell is similar to the bulk structure. The presence of partially reduced O2-δ species testifies to the high surface activity of the NPs. On increasing the annealing temperature, the particle dimensions increase, limiting disorder as a consequence of the progressive surface-to-volume ratio reduction.

17O Labeling Reveals Paired Active Sites in Zeolite Catalysts

Current needs for extending zeolite catalysts beyond traditional gas-phase hydrocarbon chemistry demand detailed characterization of active site structures, distributions, and hydrothermal impacts. A broad suite of homonuclear and heteronuclear NMR correlation experiments on dehydrated H-ZSM-5 catalysts with isotopically enriched ¹⁷O frameworks reveals that at least two types of paired active sites exist, the amount of which depends on the population of fully framework-coordinated tetrahedral Al (Al(IV)-1) and partially framework-coordinated tetrahedral Al (Al(IV)-2) sites, both of which can be denoted as (SiO)_4-n-Al(OH)_n. The relative amounts of Al(IV)-1 and Al(IV)-2 sites, and subsequent pairing, cannot be inferred from the catalyst Si/Al ratio, but depend on synthetic and postsynthetic modifications. Correlation experiments demonstrate that, on average, acidic hydroxyl groups from Al(IV)-1/Al(IV)-2 pairs are closer to one another than those from Al(IV)-1/Al(IV)-1 pairs, as supported by computational DFT calculations. Through-bond and through-space polarization transfer experiments exploiting ¹⁷O nuclei reveal a number of different acidic hydroxyl groups in varying Si/Al catalysts, the relative amounts of which change following postsynthetic modifications. Using room-temperature isotopic exchange methods, it was determined that ¹⁷O was homogeneously incorporated into the zeolite framework, while ¹⁷O → ²⁷Al polarization transfer experiments demonstrated that ¹⁷O incorporation does not occur for extra-framework Al_nO_m species. Data from samples exposed to controlled hydrolysis indicates that nearest neighbor Al pairs in the framework are more susceptible to hydrolytic attack. The data reported here suggest that Al(IV)-1/Al(IV)-2 paired sites are synergistic sites leading to increased reactivity in both low- and high-temperature reactions. No evidence was found for paired framework/nonframework sites.

TiO2-supported Au144 nanoclusters for enhanced sonocatalytic performance

The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals, by ultrasonic activation of semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs), including TiO₂, has excellent potential for use in sonodynamic therapy and for the sonocatalytic degradation of pollutants. However, TiO₂ NPs have limitations including low yields of generated ROS that result from fast electron-hole recombination. In this study, we first investigated the sonocatalytic activity of TiO₂-supported Au nanoclusters (NCs) (Au NCs/TiO₂) by monitoring the production of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) under ultrasonication conditions. The deposition of Au₁₄₄ NCs on TiO₂ NPs was found to enhance sonocatalytic activity for •OH production by approximately a factor of 2. Electron-hole recombination in ultrasonically excited TiO₂ NPs is suppressed by Au₁₄₄ NCs acting as an electron trap; this charge separation resulted in enhanced •OH production. In contrast, the deposition of Au₂₅ NCs on TiO₂ NPs resulted in lower sonocatalytic activity due to less charge separation, which highlights the effectiveness of combining Au₁₄₄ NCs with TiO₂ NPs for enhancing sonocatalytic activity. The sonocatalytic action that forms electron-hole pairs on the Au₁₄₄/TiO₂ catalyst is due to both heat and sonoluminescence from the implosive collapse of cavitation bubbles. Consequently, the ultrasonically excited Au₁₄₄ (3 wt. %)/TiO₂ catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity for the production of •OH because of less light shadowing effect, in contrast to the lower catalytic activity when irradiated with only external light.

Advanced Materials for Energy-Water Systems: The Central Role of Water/Solid Interfaces in Adsorption, Reactivity, and Transport

The structure, chemistry, and charge of interfaces between materials and aqueous fluids play a central role in determining properties and performance of numerous water systems. Sensors, membranes, sorbents, and heterogeneous catalysts almost uniformly rely on specific interactions between their surfaces and components dissolved or suspended in the water-and often the water molecules themselves-to detect and mitigate contaminants. Deleterious processes in these systems such as fouling, scaling (inorganic deposits), and corrosion are also governed by interfacial phenomena. Despite the importance of these interfaces, much remains to be learned about their multiscale interactions. Developing a deeper understanding of the molecular- and mesoscale phenomena at water/solid interfaces will be essential to driving innovation to address grand challenges in supplying sufficient fit-for-purpose water in the future. In this Review, we examine the current state of knowledge surrounding adsorption, reactivity, and transport in several key classes of water/solid interfaces, drawing on a synergistic combination of theory, simulation, and experiments, and provide an outlook for prioritizing strategic research directions.

Syntheses, design strategies, and photocatalytic charge dynamics of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs): a catalyzed photo-degradation approach towards organic dyes

The presented review focuses on design strategies to develop tailor-made MOFs/CPs of main group, transition and inner-transition elements and their photocatalytic properties to decompose dyes in wastewater discharge and their photocatalytic mechanism.

Template-Free, Solid-State Synthesis of Hierarchically Macroporous S-Doped TiO2 Nano-Photocatalysts for Efficient Water Remediation

Nanosized sulfur-doped titanium dioxide emerged as an attractive photocatalyst in various environmental remediation applications, yet most synthesis methods require hazardous sulfurizing agents and intricate synthesis procedures. Herein, we present a facile, sustainable, and environmentally friendly preparation process for the production of visible-light-active meso-macroporous sulfur-doped anatase TiO₂ (S-TiO₂) nanoparticles for the first time. This strategy encompasses solventless mixing of titanium salt and surfeit yet nontoxic abundant elemental sulfur under continuous ball milling and moderate thermoannealing. The characterizations of as-obtained S-TiO₂ nanoparticles showed enhanced physicochemical properties including distinctive surface features composed of hierarchical hollow macroporous channels having nanostructured mesoporous core walls. The annealing temperature was observed to control the structure and extent of sulfur doping in TiO₂. Upon insertion of a sulfur atom into the TiO₂ lattice, the band gap energy of S-TiO₂ was significantly lowered, facilitating the enhanced photochemical activity. Owing to the effective S doping (1.7-2.8 atom %), and the interconnected hollow meso-macroporous nanostructure, the resulting nanosized S-TiO₂ exhibited unique adsorption properties and superior photocatalytic efficiency for the rapid degradation of hazardous organic dyes and phenols for water remediation. The presented strategy holds high potential to provide rapid production of a hierarchical and highly porous S-TiO₂ photocatalyst on a large scale for various environmental remediation and other myriad photochemical applications.
