Adsorption of Gold Ions onto Sericin and Alginate Particles Chemically Crosslinked by Proanthocyanidins: a Complete Fixed-Bed Column Study

Characterization of a New Silk Sericin-Based Hydrogel for Water Retention in Soil

Hydrogel-type absorbent materials are currently a technological alternative for improving water retention in the soil and reducing nutrient loss by leaching and evaporation. This study aimed to evaluate the application of a new hydrogel based on silk sericin (SS) as a water retention material in soil. The morphology of the hydrogel was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and its impact on moisture retention in sandy loam soil (SLS) under different levels of matric pressure (MP) was evaluated. Additionally, water content data were collected over time for both SLS and SLS with hydrogel (SLS + H), and the data were used to fit predictive models. The results indicate that the hydrogel had a porous morphology that promoted water retention and soil release. Under a MP of 0.3 bar, the use of the hydrogel increased water retention by 44.70% with respect to that of SLS. The predictive models developed were adequately adjusted to the behavior of the moisture data over time and evidenced the incidence of the absorbent material on the dynamics of the moisture content in the soil. Therefore, these models could be useful for facilitating subsequent simulations or for designing automatic soil moisture control systems oriented to smart farming.

A novel S,N-rich MOF for efficient recovery of Au(III): Performance and mechanism

A novel S,N-rich MOF with adenine and 4,4'-thiodiphenol as organic ligands was synthesized via the one-step solvothermal method, and used for gold recovery. The pH impact, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, selectivity, and reusability were investigated accordingly. The adsorption and desorption mechanism were also explored comprehensively. The electronic attraction, coordination, and in situ redox account for the Au(III) adsorption. The Au(III) adsorption is affected strongly by the pH of solutions, and best at pH of 2.57. The MOF exhibits exceptional adsorption capacity as high as 3680 mg/g at 55 °C, fast kinetics with 8 min for 9.6 mg/L Au(III), and excellent selectivity for gold ion in real e-waste leachates. The adsorption process of gold on the adsorbent is endothermic and spontaneous, and influenced visibly by temperature. The adsorption ratio still maintained 99% after seven adsorption-desorption cycles. The column adsorption experiments show that the MOF has outstanding selectivity for Au(III) with 100% of removal efficiency in a complex solution containing Au, Ni, Cu, Cd, Co, and Zn ions. A glorious adsorption with a breakthrough time of 532 mins was obtained for the breakthrough curve. This study not only provides an efficient adsorbent for gold recovery, but also guidance for designing new materials.

Effective recovery of ytterbium through biosorption using crosslinked sericin-alginate beads: A complete continuous packed-bed column study

The recovery of rare-earth from secondary sources is essential for cleaner production. The development of natural biocomposites is promising for this purpose. Sericin is a waste protein from silk manufacturing. The highly polar groups on the surface of sericin facilitate blending and crosslinking with other polymers to produce biocomposites with improved properties. In this work, we investigate ytterbium recovery onto a natural biocomposite based on sericin/alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol) (SAPVA) in packed-bed column, aiming to establish a profitable application for sericin. Effects of flow rate and ytterbium inlet concentration showed that the highest exhaustion biosorption capacity (128.39 mg/g) and lowest mass transfer zone (4.13 cm) were reached under the operating conditions of 0.03 L/h and 87.95 mg/L. Four reusability cycles were performed under the optimum operating conditions using 0.3 mol/L HNO₃. Ytterbium recovery was highly successful; desorption efficiency was higher than 97% and a final ytterbium-rich concentrate (3870 mg/L) was 44 times higher than input concentration. Regenerated beads characterization showed that the cation exchange mechanism plays a major function in continuous biosorption of ytterbium. SAPVA beads also showed higher biosorption/desorption performance for ytterbium than other competing ions. These results suggest the application of SAPVA may be an alternative for large-scale ytterbium recovery.

Fabrication and Evaluation of Silk Sericin-Derived Hydrogel for the Release of the Model Drug Berberine

Silk sericin (SS) produced by Bombyx mori is normally discarded as waste in manufacturing processes, which causes environmental pollution. Therefore, investigating the use of silk sericin has economic and environmental benefits. As a three-dimensional structure, the sericin-derived hydrogel was explored in different applications. However, many developed gelation procedures raise concerns regarding safety, cost, and duration of gelation time. In this work, "thiol-ene" click chemistry was used to quickly and controllably prepare an SS-derived hydrogel to resolve these early concerns. Then, berberine was loaded and used as a model for investigating the drug-release profiles of the prepared hydrogel. The experimental results revealed that this hydrogel is eligible for a long-term release of berberine. Throughout the antibacterial experiments, the released berberine maintained its antibacterial activity. Our work expands the application of SS in biomedical industries in an eco-friendly way. Furthermore, the discussed strategy could provide a reference for the subsequent development of SS-derived materials.

Equilibrium, Thermodynamic, Reuse, and Selectivity Studies for the Bioadsorption of Lanthanum onto Sericin/Alginate/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Particles

In a scenario of high demand, low availability, and high economic value, the recovery of rare-earth metals from wastewater is economically and environmentally attractive. Bioadsorption is a promising method as it offers simple design and operation. The aim of this study was to investigate lanthanum bioadsorption using a polymeric bioadsorbent of sericin/alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based biocomposite. Batch system assays were performed to evaluate the equilibrium, thermodynamics, regeneration, and selectivity of bioadsorption. The maximum capture amount of lanthanum at equilibrium was 0.644 mmol/g at 328 K. The experimental equilibrium data were better fitted by Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. Ion exchange mechanism between calcium and lanthanum (2:3 ratio) was confirmed by bioadsorption isotherms. Thermodynamic quantities showed that the process of lanthanum bioadsorption was spontaneous (-17.586, -19.244, and -20.902 kJ/mol), endothermic (+15.372 kJ/mol), and governed by entropic changes (+110.543 J/mol·K). The reusability of particles was achieved using 0.1 mol/L HNO₃/Ca(NO₃)₂ solution for up to five regeneration cycles. The bioadsorbent selectivity followed the order of lanthanum > cadmium > zinc > nickel. Additionally, characterization of the biocomposite prior to and post lanthanum bioadsorption showed low porosity (9.95 and 12.35%), low specific surface area (0.054 and 0.019 m²/g), amorphous character, and thermal stability at temperatures up to 473 K. This study shows that sericin/ alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based biocomposites are effective in the removal and recovery of lanthanum from water.

Estimation on Fixed-Bed Column Parameters of Breakthrough Behaviors for Gold Recovery by Adsorption onto Modified/Functionalized Amberlite XAD7

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the potential of a new adsorbent material to recover Au (III) from real wastewater, in a column with a fixed bed in a dynamic regime. The material was obtained through functionalization, by impregnation of the commercial resin, Amberlite XAD 7 type, with L-glutamic acid, which has active groups -NH2 and -COOH. The goal of the experiments was to follow the correlation of fixed-bed column specific adsorption parameters (the effluent volume, the amounts of adsorbent, heights of the adsorbent layer in column) with the time necessary to cross the column. The experimental data obtained were modeled, using the Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson Thomas and Clark models, to establish the mechanism of the Au (III) recovery process, in a dynamic regime. Also, we established the number of cycles for adsorption-desorption for which the new material can be used. We used 5% HNO3 (5%) as desorption agent in five adsorption-desorption cycles, until the process was no longer efficient. The degree of desorption varied between 84% and 34% from cycle 1 to cycle 5.
