Temperature- and Pressure-Dependent Adsorption Equilibria and Diffusivities of Propylene and Propane in Pure-Silica Si-CHA Zeolite

Exploring the adsorption behavior of molecular hydrogen on CHA-zeolite by comparing the performance of various force field methods

Molecular hydrogen (H2) adsorption plays a crucial role in numerous applications, including hydrogen storage and purification processes. Understanding the interaction of H2 with porous materials is essential for designing efficient adsorption systems. In this study, we investigate H2 adsorption on CHA-zeolite using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and force field-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Firstly, we employ DFT calculations to explore the energetic properties and adsorption sites of H2 on the CHA-zeolite framework. The electronic structure and binding energies of H2 in various adsorption configurations are analyzed, providing valuable insights into the nature of the adsorption process. Subsequently, force field methods are employed to perform extensive MD simulations, allowing us to study the dynamic behavior of H2 molecules adsorbed on the CHA-zeolite surface. The trajectory analysis provides information on the diffusion mechanisms and mobility of H2 within the porous structure, shedding light on the transport properties of the adsorbed gas. Furthermore, the combination of DFT and MD results enables us to validate and refine the force field parameters used in simulations, improving the accuracy of the model, and enhancing our understanding of the H2-CHA interactions. Our comprehensive investigation into molecular hydrogen adsorption on CHA-zeolite using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations yields valuable insights into the fundamental aspects of the adsorption process. These findings contribute to the development of advanced hydrogen storage and separation technologies, paving the way for efficient and sustainable energy applications.

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship Analysis for the Prediction of Propylene Adsorption Capacity in Pure Silicon Zeolites at Various Pressure Levels

This work is devoted to the development of quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models using various regression analyses to predict propylene (C₃H₆) adsorption capacity at various pressures in zeolites from a topologically diverse International Zeolite Association database. Based on univariate and multilinear regression analysis, the accessible volume and largest cavity diameter are the most crucial factors determining C₃H₆ uptake at high and low pressures, respectively. An artificial neural network (ANN) model with five structural descriptors is sufficient to predict C₃H₆ uptake at high pressures. For combined pressures, the prediction of an ANN model with pore size distribution is pleasing. The isosteric heat of adsorption (Q _st) has a significant impact on the improvement of the prediction of low-pressure gas adsorption, which finely classifies zeolites into high or low C₃H₆ adsorbers. The conjunction of high-throughput screening and QSPR models contributes to being able to prescreen the database rapidly and accurately for top performers and perform further detailed and time-consuming computational-intensive molecular simulations on these candidates for other gas adsorption applications.

Adsorption kinetics and equilibria of two methanol samples with different water content on activated carbon

To investigate the influence of fluid purity on the adsorption properties, adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibria of two methanol samples with different water content on an activated carbon were studied. The purity of the methanol samples was 98.5% and 99.9%. Measurements were conducted at 298 K and 318 K using a magnetic suspension balance and cover a wide p/p0 range. To determine effective diffusion time constants and mass transfer coefficients, adsorption kinetics were evaluated using an isothermal and a nonisothermal Fickian diffusion model, and the linear driving force model. The pressure dependence of the kinetic parameters was studied and discussed. A small influence of sample purity on the adsorption equilibria was observed, as the purer methanol sample showed slightly higher equilibrium loadings than the less pure sample. However, significantly faster adsorption kinetics were observed for the purer sample at all temperature and pressure conditions. Compared to the less pure sample, the determined effective diffusion time constants and the mass transfer coefficients were up to 98% and 35% higher, respectively.

An upper bound visualization of design trade-offs in adsorbent materials for gas separations: alkene/alkane adsorbents

The last 20 years has seen an explosion in the number of publications investigating porous solids for gas adsorption and separation. The combination of external drivers such as anthropogenic climate change and industrial efficiency has been coupled with discovery of new materials such as synthetic zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and non-porous adsorbents. Numerous reviews catalogue these materials and their properties. However, the field lacks a unifying resource to visually compare and analyse materials properties with regard to their utility as a scientific advance and potential for industrial use. In the related field of membrane science, the 'Robeson upper bound' empirically describes the trade-off between gas permeability and selectivity and has become a ubiquitous tool for comparing membrane materials. In this article, we propose upper and lower bounds that empirically correlate the trade-offs encountered when designing adsorbent materials for gas separation, specifically: capacity, selectivity, and heat of adsorption. We apply bound visualizations to adsorbents studied for light alkene/alkane separations and highlight their use in identifying candidate materials for examination within process models and for guiding insights to the most effective materials design strategies. Furthermore, we note the limitations of upper and lower bound visualizations and provide links to a database resource for researchers to produce and download bound visualization plots. We anticipate that introducing bound visualizations to the field of adsorbents for gas separations will allow researchers to provide context for the importance of new materials discoveries, understand trade-offs in adsorbent design, and connect process engineers with candidate materials.

A review of common practices in gravimetric and volumetric adsorption kinetic experiments

The availability of commercial gravimetric and volumetric systems for the measurement of adsorption equilibrium has seen also a growth of the use of these instruments to measure adsorption kinetics. A review of publications from the past 20 years has been used to assess common practice in 180 cases. There are worrying trends observed, such as lack of information on the actual conditions used in the experiment and the fact that the analysis of the data is often based on models that do not apply to the experimental systems used. To provide guidance to users of these techniques this contribution is divided into two parts: a discussion of the appropriate models to describe diffusion in porous materials is presented for different gravimetric and volumetric systems, followed by a structured discussion of the main trends in common practice uncovered reviewing a large number of recent publications. We conclude with recommendations for best practice to avoid incorrect interpretation of these experiments.
