Abstract
In order to facilitate the practical application of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active molecules, the CPL brightness (BCPL) must be optimized. We have applied a binary modular strategy to synthesize two chiral organo-Tb3+ complexes, [Tb(Coum)3(1R,2R-Ph-PyBox)] (2) and [Tb(Coum)3(1S,2S-Ph-PyBox)] (5), combining 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-coumarin (Coum) and enantiopure 2,6-bis(4-phenyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl) pyridine (1R,2R/1S,2S-Ph-PyBox). The photophysical properties of these novel complexes have been fully characterized. The combined point-chiral induction capability of chiral bis(oxazoline) derivatives and the outstanding photophysical properties of the coumarin-derived ligand have resulted in an intense excited-state chiroptical activity (|glum| = 0.097-0.103) for both Tb3+ enantiomers, with a bright Tb3+-centered high-purity green emission (ΦPL = 74%) and enhanced antenna-centered absorption behavior (ε320 nm = 47820-47940 M-1 cm-1). A superior BCPL (1132.7-1205.8 M-1 cm-1 at 5D4 → 7F5) has been established for complexes 2 and 5. The strategy adopted in this work provides a new route to chiroptical organo-Tb3+ luminophores with outstanding comprehensive performance.

Abstract
Synthesis of a potentially polydentate, phosphine and pyridine embedded 1,2,3-triazole, o-Ph2P(C6H4)C(CH)-1,2,3-N3(CH2)(Py) (1) (here onward referred to as "P∩N3∩N") and its copper complexes are described. Reactions of 1 with CuX yielded mononuclear [Cu{(P∩N3∩N)2-κ2-P,N}]X (2 - 4; X = I, CuBr2 and CuCl2) and dinuclear [Cu2{(P∩N3∩N)2-κ4-P,N,N,N}]X (5 X = OTf, 6 X = BF4) complexes. Interestingly, the cationic complex [Cu{(P∩N3∩N)2-κ2-P,N}]I (2) in acetonitrile changes into neutral complex [Cu3(μ2-I)2(μ3-I)(NCCH3){(P∩N3∩N)-κ4(μ2-P,N)(μ2-N,N)}](7), which on addition of dichloromethane reverts back to the cationic form. The photoluminescent characteristics of cationic complexes are significantly impacted by the nature of counteranions and hence the corresponding photoluminescence quantum yields. Cationic complex 2 showed an increase in quantum yield and lifetime on changing over to neutral complex 7. TD-DFT calculations also assisted in assessing the photophysical properties.

Abstract
The first example of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from a molecular americium (Am) complex is reported. Coordination of Am(III) by a combination of thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and a chiral diphosphine oxide ligand yielded a complex with strong sensitized metal-centered luminescence. The energy transfer process for sensitization appears to occur via a unique resonant pathway, which results in the removal of the overlap between ligand phosphorescence and sensitized Am luminescence that has often been observed. Owing to this feature, and despite the limited amount of material that could be used due to the radioactivity of 241Am, CPL could be measured. The collected luminescence and CPL spectra provide insight into the crystal field splitting of the 5D1→7F1 transition. These results pave the way for future studies of Am(III) luminescence to investigate electronic structure effects in this and other 5 f elements.

Abstract
Applying molecular design to chiral organo-Zn2+ complexes, a new pair of chiral heteroleptic bis-pyrazolonate-Zn2+ enantiomers [Zn(PMBP)2(1R,2R-Chxn)] (R,R-Zn2+; HPMBP = 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone and 1R,2R-Chxn = (1R,2R)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine) and [Zn(PMBP)2(1S,2S-Chxn)] (S,S-Zn2+; 1S,2S-Chxn = (1S,2S)-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine) have been synthesized and characterized in terms of photophysical and thermodynamic properties. In addition to a small Flack parameter (0.05(3)) associated with the solid-state elucidation of S,S-Zn2+, the circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized light (CPL) spectra for the chiral Zn2+ enantiomers show perfect mirror symmetry, establishing that the enantiopure 1,2-diamines successfully induce the optical isomerism of R,R-Zn2+ and S,S-Zn2+. As a result of the combined strong chiral induction capability of chiral 1,2-diamines and excellent photophysical properties of the pyrazolone ligand (PMBP)-, the two Zn2+ enantiomers exhibit high-quality pure blue fluorescence (ΦPL = 9-10%) and significant CPL activity (|glum| = 0.0065-0.0068). The heteroleptic strategy adopted in this study offers a new route to develop high-performance chiroptical luminophores.

Abstract
The present study aims to gain insight into the circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) of lanthanide complexes through the angle of one of their elements, namely Samarium. The simulation of luminescent properties of Samarium(III) complexes remains a challenge for computational chemistry, considering the multiconfigurational character of the electronic structure, the importance of the spin-orbit coupling and the fact that its emissive level is high in energy and preceded by numerous states of various multiplicity. Herein, a methodology based on CASSCF/RASSI-SO calculations is exposed and applied to simulate the CPL properties of two different Samarium(III) complexes, presenting either a rigid or a flexible architecture around the centre ion.

Abstract
Lanthanide-based molecular materials showing efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity with a high quantum yield are attractive due to their potential applications in data storage, optical sensors, and 3D displays. Herein we present an innovative method to achieve enhanced CPL activity and a high quantum yield by doping a chromophore ligand into a coordination polymer superhelix. A series of homochiral europium(III) phosphonates with a helical morphology were prepared with the molecular formula S-, R-[Eu(cyampH)3-3n(nempH)3n]·3H2O (S/R-Eu-n, n = 0-5%). The doping of chromophore ligand S- or R-nempH2 into superhelices of S/R-Eu-0% not only turned on the CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor |glum| on the order of 10-3 but also increased the quantum yield by about 14-fold. This work may shed light on the development of efficient CPL-active lanthanide-based coordination polymers for applications.

Abstract
The complexes [Eu(bpcd)(tta)], [Eu(bpcd)(Coum)], and [Tb(bpcd)(Coum)] [tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetyl-acetonate, Coum = 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-coumarin, and bpcd = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N'-diacetate] have been synthesized and characterized from photophysical and thermodynamic points of view. The optical and chiroptical properties of these complexes, such as the total luminescence, decay curves of the Ln(III) luminescence, electronic circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, have been investigated. Interestingly, the number of coordinated solvent (methanol) molecules is sensitive to the nature of the metal ion. This number, estimated by spectroscopy, is >1 for Eu(III)-based complexes and <1 for Tb(III)-based complexes. A possible explanation for this behavior is provided via the study of the minimum energy structure obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the model complexes of the diamagnetic Y(III) and La(III) counterparts [Y(bpcd)(tta)], [Y(bpcd)(Coum)], and [La(bpcd)(Coum)]. By time-dependent DFT calculations, estimation of donor-acceptor (D-A) distances and of the energy position of the S1 and T1 ligand excited states involved in the antenna effect was possible. These data are useful for rationalizing the different sensitization efficiencies (ηsens) of the antennae toward Eu(III) and Tb(III). The tta ligand is an optimal antenna for sensitizing Eu(III) luminescence, while the Coum ligand sensitizes better Tb(III) luminescence {ϕovl = 55%; ηsens ≥ 55% for the [Tb(bpcd)(Coum)] complex}. Finally, for the [Eu(bpcd)(tta)] complex, a sizable value of glum (0.26) and a good quantum yield (26%) were measured.

Abstract
We report the first example of very efficient NIR Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) (around 970 nm) in water, obtained thanks to the combined use of a chiral Yb complex and of poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles. [YbL(tta)2 ]CH3 COO (L=N, N'-bis(2-pyridylmethylidene)-1,2-(R,R+S,S) cyclohexanediamine and tta=2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) shows good CPL in organic solvents, because the tta ligands efficiently sensitize Yb NIR luminescence and the readily prepared chiral ligand L endows the complex with the necessary dissymmetry. PLGA nanoparticles incorporate the complex and protect the metal ion from the intrusion of solvent molecules, while ensuring biocompatibility, water solubility and stability to the complex. Hydrophilic NIR-CPL optical probes can find applications in the field of NIR-CPL bio-assays.

Abstract
The interest for lanthanide circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been quickly growing for 10 years. However, very few of these studies have involved correlation between the dissymmetry factor (glum ) and the chemical modifications in a series of chiral ligands. Four polymeric compounds of Eu(III) were prepared by using a series of binaphtyl derivatives for which the size of the π system as well as the number of stereogenic elements (i.e., the binaphtyl moiety) are modulated. The resulting {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S)/(R)-Lx )]}n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-Lx )]}n (x = 2 and 4) have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction by comparison with the X-ray structures on single crystal of the Dy(III) analogs. In solution, the structure of the complexes is deeply modified and becomes monomeric. The nature of the ligand induces change in the shape of the CPL spectra in CH2 Cl2 solution. Furthermore, a large |glum | = 0.12 of the magnetic-dipole transition for the [Eu(hfac)3 ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-L2 )] complex involving the ligand with three stereogenic elements and an extended 𝜋 system has been measured. This report also shows CPL measurements in solid state for the series of {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S)/(R)-Lx )]}n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)3 ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-Lx )]}n (x = 2 and 4) polymers.

Abstract
Nine nona-coordinated Eu(III) complexes (1-9) studied here have three unsymmetric β-diketonate ligands and one chiral Ph-Pybox ligand, which can produce eight possible coordination isomers, depending on the position of the three unsymmetric β-diketonate ligands. Substituents on the β-diketonate ligands cause a rational structural rearrangement upon crystallization. Substituents with higher polarity, including -CN, -F, -Cl, -Br, -OMe, and -OEt, employ intercomplex hydrogen bonding to generate an association complex through structural rearrangement upon crystallization. Substituents with lower polarity, including -CF3, -SMe, and -Me, cause the most energetically favorable isomer to crystallize directly from solution. These two crystal structures exhibit well-resolved f-f emission lines with characteristic Stark splitting structures. This work revealed that the configuration of the Eu(III) complexes in solution can be determined by systematic comparison of their Stark splitting structures to those obtained from the solid phase using density functional theory (DFT)-based predictions combined with circular dichroism data.

Abstract
Chiroptical photoswitches are of increasing interest for their potential in advanced information technologies. Herein, an achiral bis-β-diketonate ligand (o-L) with a photoresponsive diarylethene moiety as a linker was designed, which co-assembled with Eu3+ ions and R- and S-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)-1,10-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO) as chiral ancillaries to form dinuclear triple-stranded helicates, [Eu2(o-L)3(R/S-BINAPO)2]. The helicates in the enantiopure form were confirmed by 1H, 19F, 31P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Furthermore, the mirror-image CD and CPL spectra also demonstrate the existence of stable ground- and excited-state chiralities in solution. When exposed to alternate ultraviolet and visible light, the helicates showed reversible color variations from colorless to purple, followed by the presence of light-triggered quadruple optical and chiroptical outputs, named CD, PL, CPL and glum switches. With these light-modulated optical outputs, the possibility for the fabrication of IMPLICATION and INHIBIT logic gates was discussed.

Abstract
A neutral Eu(iii) complex containing the S,S enantiomer of isoQC3A3- ligand (isoQC3A3- = N-isoquinolyl-N,N',N'-trans-l,2-cyclohexylenediaminetriacetate) was synthesized and characterized. The complex was spectroscopically investigated and the results compared with those obtained for the similar bis-anionic ligand bisoQcd2- (bisoQcd2- = N,N'-bis(2-isoquinolinmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane N,N'-diacetate). Both Eu(iii)-complexes show similar binding constants upon titration with the main analytes contained in interstitial extracellular fluid (i.e. hydrogen carbonate, serum albumin and citrate). However, the analyte affinity is accompanied by different enhancements of the Eu(iii) intrinsic quantum yield (QY). Structures and hydration numbers of the complexes are determined by luminescence decay measurements and DFT calculations. The QYs as well as the binding constants of the individual adducts of the complexes with hydrogen carbonate, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and citrate are determined. The study of the Eu(iii) emission upon the systematic variation of one analyte in a complex mixture has been carried out to predict the performance of the luminescent sensor in conditions close to the real extracellular environment. Both Eu(iii) complexes can detect citrate at extracellular concentrations up to 500 μM, even at millimolar concentrations of the other interfering species. In the case of the Eu(bisoQcd)OTf complex, an increase of 23% of the Eu(iii) luminescence intensity at 615 nm upon addition of 0.3 mM of citrate was recorded. This feature makes the latter complex a viable probe for luminescence analysis of citrate in a complex matrix.

Abstract
Creating optically pure metal assemblies is a hot research topic in the realms of chiral supramolecules. Here, three new triple-stranded europium(iii) helicates Eu2L3(L′)2 [L = 4,4′-bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)diphenyl sulphide; L′ = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) or R/S-2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphinyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO)] were synthesized in order to investigate the effects of ancillary ligands on controlling the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates. X-ray single crystal structure analysis showed that Eu2L3(Phen)2 crystalized in an achiral space group P1̄ with the equivalent amount of P and M helicates in one single cell. The isolated Eu2L3(S-BINAPO)2 and Eu2L3(R-BINAPO)2 were verified to be enantiopure by 1H, 19F, 31P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Additionally, the mirror-image CD spectra also demonstrated the successful syntheses of the enantiomers and the presence of an effective chirality transformation from BINAPO to achiral L. Furthermore, the perfect mirror-image circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of Eu2L3(S-BINAPO)2 and Eu2L3(R-BINAPO)2 indicated the existence of the excited state chirality of the Eu3+ center associated with |glum| values reaching 0.112. In addition, the photophysical properties of three helicates were also discussed. Chiral ancillary ligands (R/S-BINAPO) modulated the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates, which presented strong CPL with |glum| values up to 0.112 and high luminescence quantum yield up to 34%.![]()

Abstract
Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII tris(β-diketonate) enantiomeric pairs, based on fluorinated β-diketone (Hbtfa) and enantiopure asymmetric N,N'-donor ligands (LR and LS), Λ-Eu(btfa)3LR (R-1-Eu)/Δ-Eu(btfa)3LS (S-1-Eu) and Λ-Sm(btfa)3LR (R-2-Sm)/Δ-Sm(btfa)3LS (S-2-Sm) (btfa- = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pineno-2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized. The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra confirmed their enantiomeric nature. R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm exhibit intense characteristic emissions of EuIII (red) and SmIII (orange-red) ions both in the solid state and in DCM with long lifetimes and high luminescence quantum yields. For example, the overall quantum yields reach up to 61% and 53% along with very high sensitization efficiency values of 82 and 79 for R-1-Eu in the solid state and in DCM, respectively. Notably, the corresponding values are determined to be 6.5% (solid state) and 3.1% (DCM) for R-2-Sm, which are among the highest quantum yields for rare SmIII tris(β-diketonate) luminescent complexes reported to date. Furthermore, R-1-Eu and R-2-Sm show a strong triboluminescence (TL) phenomenon visible with the naked eye in daylight. Moreover, R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. Particularly, the luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) for R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm are larger than those for R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu despite the fact that SmIII complexes usually show poorer emission than EuIII homologues, which is very rare in the reported EuIII and SmIII CPL-active complexes.

Abstract
Authenticating products and documents with security inks is vital to global commerce, security and health. Lanthanide complexes are widely used in luminescent security inks owing to their unique and robust photophysical properties. Lanthanide complexes can also be engineered to undergo circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), which encodes chiral molecular fingerprints in luminescence spectra that cannot be decoded by conventional optical measurements. However, chiral CPL signals have not yet been exploited as an extra security layer in advanced security inks. This Review introduces CPL and related concepts that are necessary to appreciate the challenges and potential of lanthanide-based, CPL-active security inks. We describe recent advances in CPL analysis and read-out technologies that have expedited CPL-active security ink applications. Further, we provide a systematic meta-analysis of strongly CPL-active Euiii, Tbiii, Smiii, Ybiii, Cmiii, Dyiii and Criii complexes, discussing the suitability of their photophysical properties and highlighting promising candidates. We conclude by providing key recommendations for the development and advancement of the field.

Abstract
To reach the promising potential of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters, high CPL brightness must be achieved. We describe the synthesis of analogues of the C3-symmetrical Shibasaki's lanthanide complexes (Sm, Tb, Dy) supported by enantiopure 5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octahydro-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (H8-Binol). The complexes exhibit visible luminescence in solution with exceptionally high quantum yields for Sm (4%) and Dy (17%), and strong circularly polarized luminescence for Sm, Tb, and Dy (|glum| up to 0.44, 0.32, 0.33, respectively). Altogether, these complexes possess amongst the strongest CPL brightness reported to date in lanthanide molecular complexes (up to 782 M-1 cm-1 for Tb).

Abstract
Ligands L1 and L2, respectively based on a cyclam and a cross-bridged cyclam scaffold functionalized at N1 and N8 by 6-phosphonic-2-methylene pyridyl groups, are described. While complexation of lanthanide (Ln) cations with L2 was not possible, a family of complexes has been prepared with L1, of the general formulae [LnL1H2]Cl (Ln3+ = Lu, Tb, Yb) or [LnL1H] (Ln3+ = Eu). The solution, structural, potentiometric, and photophysical data for these novel ligands and their complexes have been investigated, including a solid-state study by X-ray diffraction (L1, L2, and [EuL1H]), 1H NMR complexation investigations (Lu3+), as well as UV-vis absorption and luminescence spectroscopy in water and D2O (pH ≈ 7). L1 forms 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometric octadentate complexes in solution. Importantly, the pyridyl phosphonate functions are capable of simultaneous chelation to the metal center and of interaction with a second metal center. 1H NMR (Lu3+) and spectrophotometric titrations of the isolated [TbL1]- complex by EuCl3 salts demonstrated the formation of high-order (hetero)polymetallic species in aqueous solution (H2O, pH = 7). Global analysis of the luminescence titration experiment points to the formation of 4:1, 3:1, and 3:2 [TbL1]/Eu heteropolynuclear assemblies, exhibiting a strong preference to forming [TbL1]3Eu2 at increased europium concentrations, with energy transfer occurring between the kinetically inert terbium complex and added europium cations.
