Polyiodine-Modified 1,3,5-Benzenetricarboxylic Acid Framework Zn(II)/Cd(II) Complexes as Highly Selective Fluorescence Sensors for Thiamine Hydrochloride, NACs, and Fe3+/Zn2+

Zinc(II)-MOF: A Versatile Luminescent Sensor for Selective Molecular Recognition of Flame Retardants and Antibiotics

An exceptional Zinc(II)-organic framework with the formula [{Zn(L4-py)(bdc)}·DMF]n (Zn-MOF) has been constructed solvothermally using a novel linker L4-py {2,7-bis(3-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)phenyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone}, coligand H2bdc (1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid), and ZnBF4·xH2O. The ligand L4-py has been fabricated after functionalization of NDA (1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) core with 3-(pyridin-4-ylethynyl)phenyl group. The single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals that Zn-MOF exhibits a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) framework architecture and features (4)-connected uninodal dia; 4/6/c1; sqc6 topology with point symbol {66} and two-dimensional (2D) + 2D, parallel polycatenation. Notably, Zn-MOF displayed excellent fluorescence phenomenon and stability in water as well as in methanol solvents and was harnessed as a versatile sensor, demonstrating selective and sensitive molecular recognition of flame retardants and antibiotics. Notably, Zn-MOF displayed 57 and 49.5% quenching efficiency for the flame-retardant pentabromophenol (PBP) and 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromobisphenol A (TBPA), respectively. Whereas an outstanding 90% quenching efficiency was observed for antibiotics, tetracycline (TC) and secnidazole (SD). The mechanistic investigations of this luminescence quenching suggest that this might be primarily occurring via the Fourier resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanisms, which might be assisted by the competitive absorption and host-guest interactions. The π-electron-rich framework structure of sensor Zn-MOF activates this mechanism.

Stable Co(II)-based coordination polymer as fluorescence sensor for the discriminative sensing of biomarker methylmalonic acid

Three novel Co-based coordination polymers including {[Co(L)(μ3-O)1/3]2}n (1), {[Co(L)(bimb)]}n (2) and {[Co(L)(bimmb)1/2]}n (3) (H2L = 2,6-di(4-carboxylphenyl)-4-(4-(triazol-1-ylphenyl))pyridine), bimb = 1,4-bis(lmidazol) butane, bimmb = 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)benzene) were successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 1 possesses a 3D architecture composed of a trinuclear cluster [Co3N3(CO2)6(μ3-O)], 2 exhibits a 2D new topological framework with the point symbol (84·122)(8)2, whereas 3 shows a unique six-fold interpenetrated 3D framework with a (63·82·10)2(63)2(8) topology. Impressively, all of them can function as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the biomarker methylmalonic acid (MMA) via fluorescence quenching. The low detection limit, reusability and high anti-interference performance together make 1-3 become promising sensors for the practical detection of MMA. Furthermore, the successful application of MMA detection in urine sample was demonstrated, which may be a potential candidate for the further development of clinical diagnostic tools.

Synthesis and Fluorescence Sensing for Nitro Explosives and Pesticides of Two Cd-Coordination Polymers

Two cadmium coordination polymers (CPs), {[Cd(zgt)(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)]·H2O}n (1) and {[Cd(zgt)(BPP)(H2O)]·H2O}n (2) (H2zgt = 5-methoxyresorcinic acid, 2,2'-bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, and BPP = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane), were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The structures of CPs 1-2 were characterized by IR, TGA, X-ray powder diffraction, and elemental analysis. The single-crystal structure analysis shows that CP 1 is a typical 1D chain structure and CP 2 belongs to a 2D layered structure. Based on the excellent luminescence properties of CP 1 and 2, fluorescence sensing experiments were carried out for explosives and pesticides. The results of the explosion sensing experiment showed that CP 1 and 2 had an excellent fluorescence quenching effect on PNBA (p-nitrobenzoic acid) and TNP (2,4,6-trinitrophenol), respectively, and the detection limits were 3.28 and 11.4 nM, respectively. Interestingly, both CP 1 and 2 showed good fluorescence quenching against the pesticide fluridine (Flu), and CP 1 had a lower detection limit and was more sensitive. In addition, the fluorescence quenching mechanism was discussed in detail by the UV absorption spectrum and density functional theory. In order to explore its practical application, the content of Flu in water samples was detected by a labeling recovery method.

Trefoil-Shaped Metal-Organic Cages as Fluorescent Chemosensors for Multiple Detection of Fe3+, Cr2O72-, and Antibiotics

The construction of metal-organic cages (MOCs) with specific structures and fluorescence sensing properties is of much importance and challenging. Herein, a novel phenanthroline-based metal-organic cage, [Cd₃L₃·6MeOH·6H₂O] (1), was synthesized by metal-directed assembly of the ligand 3,3'-[(1E,1'E)-(1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl)]dibenzoic acid (H₂L) and CdI₂ using a solvothermal method. According to single-crystal X-ray analysis, cage 1 exhibits a rare trefoil-shaped structure. Meanwhile, the discrete MOCs are further stacked into a 3D porous supramolecular structure through abundant intermolecular C-H···O interactions. Additionally, through exploration of fluorescence sensing on cations, anions, and antibiotics in aqueous solution, the experimental results indicate that cage 1 has excellent fluorescence sensing abilities for Fe³⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, and nitrofuran and nitroimidazole antibiotics. The sensing ability of 1 remains unaltered for five cycles toward all analytes. The above results suggested that cage 1 can be considered a potential multiple sensor for the detection of Fe³⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, and some antibiotics.

Fabrication of Two Isomorphic and Hyperstable Rare Earth-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Efficient Ratiometric Probe and Photocatalytic Performances

Two isomorphic lanthanide compounds {[Ln(ddpp)(H₂O)]·CH₃CN}_n (Ln = Eu and Gd, H₄ddpp = 2,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)pyridine) were synthesized. Complex 1-Eu displays ultrahigh acid-base stability and thermal stability. Furthermore, luminescence measurements revealed that 1-Eu could detect quinolone antibiotics with an ultralow limit of detection in aqueous solution. The ratiometric probe properties for sensing antibiotics could be attributed to the incompletely sensitized Eu³⁺ ion of the ligand. Remarkably, it is interesting that 1-Gd exhibits excellent tetracycline degradation properties under visible light. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were carried out to investigate the photodegradation mechanisms. Moreover, a rational explanation for the fluorescent probe and photocatalysis behavior of these two complexes was also discussed with the assistance of density functional theory calculations.

Design of a Sensitive Fluorescent Zn-Based Metal-Organic Framework Sensor for Cimetidine Monitoring in Biological and Pharmaceutical Samples

A new highly fluorescent zinc-organic framework [Zn₂(btca)(DMSO)₂]_n (Zn-MOF) was prepared via in situ ligand formation by the solvothermal reaction of Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) in DMSO solvent. During the solvothermal reaction, PMDA was gradually hydrolyzed to a pyromellitic acid, 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylic acid (H₄btca), to provide a tetracarboxylic acid as a linker in the reaction medium. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis exhibits a 3D porous structure with open tetragonal channels running along the crystallographic c-axis. The Zn-MOF was explored as an on-mode fluorescent sensor for tracing cimetidine in biological fluids and pharmaceutical samples in the presence of interfering species. The results show a quick response in a short time range. The characteristics of this sensor were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetric, and elemental analyses.

Increase of Fluorescence of Humic-Like Substances in Interaction with Cd(II): a Photoinduced Charge Transfer Approach

Described is the enhancement of fluorescence intensity due to the interaction of a humic-like substance (HLS 1%) extracted from process water (PW) and Cd(II) ions in aqueous solution. Using Canonical Polyadic/Parallel Factor Analysis (CP/PARAFAC), two main components were seen that contributed to fluorescence, the first one increased it and the second one kept it constant in both static and dynamic fluorescence studies. Two-dimensional FTIR analysis indicated that the interaction of HLS 1% and Cd(II) ions occurred in the following order of affinity with the groups: C-O bonds in polysaccharides > C-O bonds in carboxylic acid. The results obtained suggest that the increase in fluorescence intensity and lifetime suggest a photoinduced charge transfer (PCT) between Cd(II) ions and carboxylic acid groups present in HLS 1%.

Anion-controlled Zn(II) coordination polymers with 1-(tetrazo-5-yl)-3-(triazo-1-yl) benzene as an assembling ligand: synthesis, characterization, and efficient detection of tryptophan in water

Tryptophan regulates and participates in various physiological systems in the human body, and its excessive intake has harmful effects. Therefore, detecting and monitoring tryptophan in water and distinguishing it from other amino acids are necessary. In addition to their excellent luminescence, coordination polymer-based sensors have good stability and high sensitivity and selectivity for sensing applications. In this work, two luminescent coordination polymers (CPs), [Zn(ttb)Cl]_n (1) and [Zn₂(ttb)₂(OH)(NO₃)]_n (2), were obtained through the solvothermal reaction of different Zn(II) salts with a rarely studied multidentate N-donor ligand, 1-(tetrazo-5-yl)-3-(triazo-1-yl) benzene (Httb). Crystallographic investigations revealed that the structure of 1 exhibits a 2D fes net with Cl^- anions acting as terminal charge balancers, and that of 2 features a 3D ant net with NO₃^- anions in a rare monodentate bridging (μ₂-O-η¹:η¹) mode. In terms of stability tests, 2 has better thermal and water stability than 1. Although both show good fluorescence performance, specific tryptophan detection, and excellent anti-interference ability, 2 has higher K_SV (111 852.6 M^-1), a lower limit of detection (LOD = 23.6 nM), and a better recovery rate than 1. Cytotoxicity experiments proved that 2 has extremely low toxicity and thus has great potential for in vivo detection. Therefore, CP 2 is a suitable candidate for advanced practical applications for the efficient sensing of tryptophan in water. The luminescence of the ligands was also calculated using DFT theory and further discussed through experiments. The quenching mechanism that occurs after tryptophan addition was explored through Hirshfeld surface analysis.

A hydrostable Zn2+ coordination polymer for multifunctional detection of inorganic and organic contaminants in water

From the perspective of human health and environmental safety, the development of hydrostable fluorescent sensors for the detection of heavy metal ions and nitroaromatics is an important but a challenging issue. To this end, a water-stable Zn²⁺ coordination polymer formulated as {[Zn(H₂L)]·2DMF·3H₂O}_n (ZnCP) was prepared elaborately by a solvothermal method using a multidentate ligand (H₄L) with 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid spaced by para-substituted benzene. Single-crystal analysis shows that the new ZnCP exhibits one-dimensional chain structural features, which further promoted to afford a wrinkled two-dimensional network structure via inter-chain hydrogen bonding. Powder X-ray diffraction and fluorescence measurements show that it can maintain crystallinity and structural integrity under harsh acidic and alkaline conditions with the pH ranging from 4 to 11. Notably, the bright blue-emissive ZnCP showed selective fluorescence quenching effects for Fe³⁺ and picric acid (PA), which makes it an excellent chemical sensor for Fe³⁺ and picric acid (PA) with low detection limits of 0.41 and 0.26 μM in water. The recognition mechanism of Fe³⁺ could be attributed to UV absorption competition and resonance energy transfer in the aid of weak electrostatic interactions, while the recognition mechanism of PA is considered to be a multi-quenching mechanism dominated by absorption competition and PET effects with the assistance of hydrogen bonding. In addition, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films doped with ZnCP (ZnCP@PMMA) were developed to provide better sensing performance and portability for practical applications.

Multifunctional Zn-Ln (Ln = Eu and Tb) heterometallic metal-organic frameworks with highly efficient I2 capture, dye adsorption, luminescence sensing and white-light emission

A new family of isostructural 3d-4f heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (HMOFs), [Zn₃Eu_xTb_2-x(TZI)₄(DMA)₅(H₂O)₃]·4DMA [x = 0 (1), 0.3 (2), 0.6 (3), 0.9 (4), 1 (5), 1.2 (6), 1.5 (7), 1.8 (8), 2 (9)], has been synthesized using the 5-(4-(tetrazol-5-yl) phenyl)isophthalic acid (H₃TZI) ligand, Ln^III ions and Zn^II ions under solvothermal conditions. All HMOFs exhibit a (3,3,4,5,5)-connected 6³·6³(4²·6²·8²)(4·6⁵·8)(4·6⁶·8³) topology, which features three different types of motifs: one is a mononuclear Zn^II ion and the other two motifs are binuclear [Zn(COO)₃Ln] clusters. The adsorption experiments indicate that Zn₃Tb₂ (1) could efficiently remove almost all I₂ from cyclohexane solution after 12 h and also showed better adsorption towards neutral red (NR) dye (adsorption: only the Zn₃Tb₂ (1) was taken as one representative). Simultaneously, the luminescence sensing showed that Zn₃Tb₂ (1) and Zn₃Eu₂ (9) have excellent response and sensitivity towards pollutants such as Fe³⁺ ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with high selectivity and a fairly low limit of detection through luminescence quenching effect. Moreover, seven trimetallic-doped HMOFs 2-8 analogues of Zn₃Ln₂ (single) HMOFs were designed and prepared, showing different changes of luminescent color. More interestingly, Zn₃Eu_1.5Tb_0.5 (7) with white-light emission was fabricated by doping relative concentrations of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions. To the best of our knowledge, Zn₃Eu_1.5Tb_0.5 (7) represents a novel kind of heterometallic Zn₃Ln₂ HMOFs with white-light emission. It could be deduced that the excellent characteristics, namely strong typical luminescence emission of Zn^II and Ln^III ions, microporous channels, active open metal sites (tetra-coordinated Zn^II-metal sites), and uncoordinated carboxylate O atoms and uncoordinated tetrazolate N atoms, made the above HMOFs an ideal platform for adsorption, luminescence sensing, and white-light emission. More significantly, these HMOFs are the first reported Zn-Ln heterometallic materials with the H₃TZI ligand.

Recent progress in the development of MOF-based optical sensors for Fe3

Fe(iii) is a common pollutant released into our ecosystem from various industrial and anthropogenic activities which when in excess interferes with human health. A plethora of sensors based on various designs and working principles are being continuously synthesized and improvised for its facile detection. In the present review, we have provided a brief overview of the developments made in the field of metal organic framework (MOF) based optical sensors for Fe3+. MOFs have exponentially emerged in the field of research due to their high porosity, modular construction and easy tunability. These inorganic-organic hybrid porous materials are being essentially promoted as optical sensors because of their unique photophysical properties and potential sensing applications.

Four dual-functional luminescent Zn(ii)-MOFs based on 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid with pyridylbenzimidazole ligands for detection of iron(iii) ions and acetylacetone

Four Zn-MOFs with different topological types were synthesized and characterized, MOFs 1–4 have excellent sensitivity, selectivity, recyclability and structural stabilities for detecting acac/Fe³⁺ in the naked eye range.

Various carboxylates induced eight Zn(ii)/Cd(ii) coordination polymers with fluorescence sensing activities for Fe(iii), Cr(vi) and oxytetracycline

Enhanced E/Z-photoisomerization and luminescence of stilbene derivative co-coordinated in di-β-diketonate lanthanide complexes

A new tetradentate chelating ligand appending a stilbene derivative, E-N',N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-4-styrylbenzohydrazide (HL) was synthesized, together with two β-diketonates (4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenylbutane-1,3-dionate, tfd), with or without the trifluoroacetate anion present as a ligand for coordination with lanthanide(iii) ions to form [Ln(tfd)2(HL)(CF3CO2)] (LnC49H36F9N4O7, Ln = La (1), Nd (2), Eu (3), Gd (4)) and [Yb(tfd)2(L)] (YbC47H35F6N4O5 (5), L = deprotonated HL). All five complexes were structurally characterized, and five crystals were obtained and analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The quantum yield of trans-to-cis photoisomerization of the stilbene group in gadolinium complex 4 was enhanced about five-fold compared with that of HL itself. Other complexes showed slightly enhanced or depressed photoisomerization. The total luminescence quantum yield/sensitization efficiency of europium complex 3 in the solid state and acetonitrile solution were 22.1%/96.7% and 19.3%/97.9%, respectively. The transfer of ligand energy to the Eu3+ ion was highly efficient. This enhanced photoisomerization and luminescence of the stilbene group within complexes was found to be related to the energy level of lanthanide ions and whether a ligand-to-metal center or ligand-to-ligand charge transfer process was present. The interpretation of experimental results is rationally supported by time-dependent density-functional theory calculations. In complex 4, except for the intramolecular absorption transition of HL ligand itself (IL, πHL-π*HL), the presence of the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition from tfd to HL (LLCT, πtfd-π*HL) and the triplet state energy of HL being unable to transfer to the higher 6P7/2 excited energy level of the Gd3+ ion would facilitate HL photoisomerization. For complex 3, this was due to reversed ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition from HL to tfd (LLCT, πHL-π*tfd) and its energy transfer to the metal center. Although the observed radiative lifetimes of NIR luminescent complexes 2 and 5 were around 10 μs, these systems contained only two diketone ligands, indicating that HL still had a certain promoting effect compared with tris(diketonate) lanthanide complexes. These results offer an important route for the design of new lanthanide-based molecular switching materials.

Synthesis and characterization of MOFs constructed from 5-(benzimidazole-1-yl)isophthalic acid and highly selective fluorescence detection of Fe(iii) and Cr(vi) in water

In this work, four novel metal–organic frameworks [Cd(bipa)]_n (1), {[Zn₂(bipa)₂]·2C₂H₅OH}_n (2), {[Co(bipa)]·C₂H₅OH}_n (3), {[Ni(bipa)₂]·2DMA}_n (4), (H₂bipa = 5-(benzimidazole-1-yl)isophthalic acid) were successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Complexes 1–4 were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Interestingly, the coordination patterns and 3D network structures of complexes 1–3 are very similar, while complex 4 is relatively unique. Complexes 1–2 exhibit potential fluorescent properties. Complex 1 can selectively and sensitively detect trace Fe(iii) and Cr(vi) in water by fluorescence quenching detection, and the quenching mechanism is further discussed.
