Heteroleptic Samarium(III) Chalcogenide Complexes: Opportunities for Giant Exchange Coupling in Bridging σ- and π-Radical Lanthanide Dichalcogenides

Dinuclear ytterbium(III) benzamidinate complexes with bridging S32-, Se22- and Te22- ligands: synthesis, structure and magnetic properties

Treatment of Yb(II) complex [L2Yb(THF)2] (L = PhC(NSiMe3)2) with elemental sulfur, selenium or tellurium resulted in the isolation of a series of dinuclear Yb(III) complexes featuring side-on bound S32- (1), Se22- (2) or Te22- (3) moieties, respectively. Magnetic study on these complexes revealed that 3 is a rare lanthanide telluride single-molecule magnet (SMM).

s-Block metal complexes of superbulky (tBu3Si)2N-: a new weakly coordinating anion?

Sterically hindered amide anions have found widespread application as deprotonation agents or as ligands to stabilize metals in unusual coordination geometries or oxidation states. The use of bulky amides has also been advantageous in catalyst design. Herein we present s-block metal chemistry with one of the bulkiest known amide ligands: (tBu3Si)2N- (abbreviated: tBuN-). The parent amine (tBuNH), introduced earlier by Wiberg, is extremely resistant to deprotonation (even with nBuLi/KOtBu superbases) but can be deprotonated slowly with a blue Cs+/e- electride formed by addition of Cs0 to THF. (tBuN)Cs crystallized as a separated ion-pair, even without cocrystallized solvent. As salt-metathesis reactions with (tBuN)Cs are sluggish and incomplete, it has only limited use as an amide transfer reagent. However, ball-milling with LiI led to quantitative formation of (tBuN)Li and CsI. Structural characterization shows that (tBuN)Li is a monomeric contact ion-pair with a relatively short N-Li bond, an unusual T-shaped coordination geometry around N and extremely short Li⋯Me anagostic interactions. Crystal structures are compared with Li and Cs complexes of less bulky amide ligands (iPr3Si)2N- (iPrN-) and (Me3Si)2N- (MeN-). DFT calculations show trends in the geometries and electron distributions of amide ligands of increasing steric bulk (MeN- < iPrN- < tBuN-) and confirm that tBuN- is a rare example of a halogen-free weakly coordinating anion.

Structural Diversity and Multielectron Reduction Reactivity of Samarium(II) Iodido-β-diketiminate Complexes Dependent on Tetrahydrofuran Content

The molecular structures of complexes [Sm(Nacnac)I(thf)_n] (Nacnac = HC(C(Me)Ndipp)₂^-, dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, thf = tetrahydrofuran) depending on the number of thf ligands are studied. The complete removal of thf from a known complex [Sm(Nacnac)I(thf)₂] leads to a tetranuclear product [Sm(Nacnac)I]₄ (4). The partial removal of thf results in mixtures of dinuclear [Sm₂(Nacnac)₂I₂(thf)] (2), trinuclear [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃I₃(thf)] (3), and tetranuclear [Sm₄(Nacnac)₄I₄(thf)₂] (4*) complexes and 4, depending on the conditions. The reaction of solvent-free SmI₂ with 1 equiv of K(Nacnac) results mainly in [Sm(Nacnac)₂] (1), while the interaction of 4 with certain amounts of thf allows obtaining pure 2 and 3 (with the admixture of 4*). Complex 4* is the exact dimer of 2, and both compounds are stable in solutions. Reactions with 3 and 4 as reductants are studied. 4 is oxidized by I₂ to stoichiometrically yield two products, mixed-valent tetranuclear [Sm₄(Nacnac)₄I₅] (5) and binuclear [Sm(Nacnac)I₂]₂ (6) complexes. In the reaction of 4 with ⁿBu₃PTe, a trinuclear complex [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃(μ-I)₃(μ₃-E)₂] (8, E = I or Te) is formed in small amounts, with the formation of 6 as the second product. 3 serves as a two-electron reductant in the reaction with ⁿBu₃PTe to yield a trinuclear complex [Sm₃(Nacnac)₃I₃(μ-Te₂)] (7). Complexes 2, 4, 4*, 5, 6, and 8 possess a unique flat Sm_xI_y core of heavy atoms, which is assumed to be a consequence of the Nacnac ligand geometry.

Electronic structure study of divanadium complexes with rigid covalent coordination: potential molecular qubits with slow spin relaxation

The electronic structures of homovalent [V₂(μ-S₂)₂(R₂dtc)₄] (R = Et, ⁱBu) and mixed-valent [V₂(μ-S₂)₂(R₂dtc)₄]⁺ are reported here. The soft-donor, eight-coordinate ligand shell combined with the fully delocalised ground state provides a highly rigid and covalent environment that will nurture long spin relaxation times in vanadyl-based molecular qubits.

Studies on the structural and optical properties of samarium β-diketonate complex incorporated electrospun poly(methylmethacrylate) nanofibres with different architectures

Electrospinning is the most favourable method for production of polymer nanofibres. In this study, we prepared a samarium β-diketonate complex that incorporated pure, surface-roughened and coaxial hollow poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibres through electrospinning. The successful incorporation of this samarium complex into the PMMA nanofibres with different architectures was elucidated through various structural and morphological studies. Optical investigations as well as other characterization techniques for the pure, surface-roughened and coaxial hollow PMMA nanofibres before and after incorporating the samarium β-diketonate complex explained the host matrix nature of the PMMA nanofibres. Photoluminescence properties of the pure and structurally modified PMMA nanofibres were enhanced two or three times after incorporating the samarium complex into the fibre. Comparison of the optical properties between the pure and structurally modified PMMA nanofibres incorporating the samarium β-diketonate complex demonstrated the structural and optical improvements as well as the better host matrix nature of the surface-roughened and coaxial hollow PMMA nanofibres over pure PMMA nanofibres for the samarium β-diketonate complex. These optical enhancements make these materials applicable for various optical devices.

Blocking like it's hot: a synthetic chemists' path to high-temperature lanthanide single molecule magnets

Progress in the synthesis, design, and characterisation of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has expanded dramatically from curiosity driven beginnings to molecules that retain magnetization above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. This is in no small part due to the increasingly collaborative nature of this research where synthetic targets are guided by theoretical design criteria. This article aims to summarize these efforts and progress from the perspective of a synthetic chemist with a focus on how chemistry can modulate physical properties. A simple overview is presented of lanthanide electronic structure in order to contextualize the synthetic advances that have led to drastic improvements in the performance of lanthanide-based SMMs from the early 2000s to the late 2010s.
