A Platinum(II) Organometallic Building Block for the Design of Emissive Copper(I) and Silver(I) Coordination Polymers

Cation Charge as a Tool to Change Dimensionality in Organic-Inorganic Hybrids Based on Copper Thiocyanate Templated by 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane

The first three compounds based on a {copper-thiocyanate-dabco} combination, namely, (Hdabco)[Cu₂(NCS)₃] (1), (H₂dabco)[Cu(NCS)₃] (2), and [Cu(Hdabco)₂(NCS)₄]∙2dmso (3), where dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal XRD, elemental analysis, Raman, and partial IR spectroscopy. In copper(I) derivatives, the influence of the charge of the organic cation on the dimensionality of the crystal structure is observed. Thus, in the case of 1, monoprotonated Hdabco⁺ cations provide the template for the formation of a polymeric anionic 3D framework {[Cu₂(NCS)₃]^-}_n, while in the case of 2, diprotonated H₂dabco²⁺ cations together with discrete [Cu(SCN)₃]^2- anions generate a simple ionic 0D structure with an island-like crystal lattice. The anionic {[Cu₂(SCN)₃]^-}_n framework has infinite square channels of 10 × 10 Å size running along the 001 crystallographic direction. In 3, both the Hdabco⁺ and thiocyanato units behave as terminal monodentate ligands attached to copper(II) centers via N-donor atoms, forming neutral molecular complexes with an elongated (4+2) octahedral environment. The crystallization molecules of dmso are hydrogen bonded to the protonated parts of the coordinated dabco molecules. A series of by-products Cu(SCN)₂(dmso)₂ (4), (Hdabco)SCN (5), (H₂dabco)(SCN)₂ (6), and (H₂dabco)(SCN)₂∙H₂O (7) were identified and characterized.

A One-Dimensional Cu(I) Coordination Polymer with Optical Sensing of Oxygen and Temperature

Due to their tight structures, it is usually difficult for one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) to form permanent pores unless 2D and 3D topologies are formed via supramolecular interactions, so studies in the field of oxygen sensing on 1D CPs are rarely reported. Here, we report a 1D Cu(I) cluster-based CP with dual sensing characteristics for temperature and oxygen. Even if the porosity is only 6.6%, the quenching rate of this CP reaches 98.4% with 1 bar O2 at room temperature. Its luminescence intensity exhibits a unique thermal “quenching, then activating” behavior during monotonic variations in temperature.

A comparative study of [Ag11(iPrS)9(dppb)3]2+ and [Ag15S(sBuS)12(dppb)3]+: templating effect on structure and photoluminescence

Atomically precise silver clusters with tunable photoluminescence (PL) properties have attracted extensive attention due to their great value for basic science and future applications. Here, we report that the addition of a sulfido template into a triangular thiolated silver cluster [Ag11(iPrS)9(dppb)3]·2CF3SO3·CH3OH (Ag11, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane), which is emissive at 660 nm under ambient conditions, produced another silver cluster [S@Ag15(sBuS)12(dppb)3]·CF3SO3·H2O (Ag15) that displays 716 nm emission with a 56 nm redshift aided by the ligand sec-butyl mercaptan. The sulfido template, which affects the geometrical and electronic structures, results in a redshift of Ag11 room-temperature PL as a result of opening up the template-to-metal charge transfer (TMCT) and disturbing the electronic transition between the metal core and ligands at the periphery.

Luminescence behaviour of Au(I)-Cu(I) heterobimetallic coordination polymers based on alkynyl-tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine Au(I) complexes

A set of alkynyl-tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine Au(i) complexes was synthesized and characterized. Free coordination functions on the ligand environment periphery, namely 'scorpionate' PPy3 and the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C bond, allowed these ditopic metalloligands to be selectively linked to 1D coordination polymers by reaction with Cu(i), which used both Cu-(N-PPy3) and Cu-(η2-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C) coordination modes. Single-crystal and powder XRD, NMR, and XPS techniques were used to characterize the coordination polymers obtained. Heterobimetallic Au(i)-Cu(i) coordination polymers demonstrate triplet photoluminescence which was studied by spectroscopic and computational methods to understand the pathway of energy transfer inside the chain of linked chromophore centres. The intriguing feature of the electronic structure of heterobimetallic supramolecular assemblies is the 'long-distance' electronic transition involving PhC2 and PPy3 ligands located at a distance of more than 1 nm from each other. Thus, the assembly of a heterobimetallic coordination polymer from relatively simple 'building blocks' retains the block-wise nature of the electronic structure, but the photophysical properties of the polymer are fundamentally different from the properties of discrete organometallic components.
