Photophysical Activity and Host-Guest Behavior of Ruthenium Polypyridyl Catalysts Encapsulated in Cucurbit[10]uril

Post-Assembly Polymerization of Discrete Anion-Coordinated Triple Helicate

Hierarchical self-assembly has been recently employed in the construction of anion-coordination-driven gel materials. However, the post-assembly modification strategy, which may be a highly efficient strategy to realize the functionalization of discrete 'aniono' supramolecular architectures, has not been employed yet. Herein we report the first example of anion-coordination-driven gel material cross-linked by well-defined 'aniono' triple helicate through post-assembly polymerization. The obtained gel shows self-healing property and excellent compatibility with various surfaces, including glass, rubber, leaf, PP, and metal. The viscoelastic gel constructed through the post-assembly modification strategy enriches the method to construct the anion-coordination-driven smart materials.

Metal Cation-Doped ns-Cucurbit[10]uril: Adsorption of Para-Phenylenediamine

The separation of phenylenediamine (PDA) isomers is crucial in the field of chemical manufacturing. Herein, we presented a strategy for the separation of PDA isomers (para-phenylenediamine, p-PDA; meta-phenylenediamine, m-PDA; ortho-phenylenediamine, o-PDA) using four supramolecular framework materials of ns-cucurbit[10]uril (ns-Q[10]), (1) ns-Q[10](Cd), (2) ns-Q[10](Mn), (3) ns-Q[10](Cu), (4) ns-Q[10](Pb). Our findings indicated that these supramolecular framework materials of ns-Q[10] showed remarkable selectivity for para-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) in p-PDA, m-PDA, and o-PDA mixtures, respectively. The variations in selectivity observed in these four single-crystal structures arose from variations in the thermodynamic stabilities and binding modes of the host-guest complexes. Importantly, the supramolecular framework based on ns-Q[10] exhibited selective accommodation of p-PDA over its isomers. This study highlighted the practical application of ns-Q[10] in effectively separating PDA isomers and demonstrated the potential utility of ns-Q[10] in isolating other organic molecules.

Remarkably Selective Binding, Behavior Modification, and Switchable Release of (Bipyridine)3Ru(II) vis-à-vis (Phenanthroline)3Ru(II) by Trimeric Cyclophanes in Water

A recurring dream of molecular recognition is to create receptors that distinguish between closely related targets with sufficient accuracy, especially in water. The more useful the targets, the more valuable the dream becomes. We now present multianionic trimeric cyclophane receptors with a remarkable ability to bind the iconic (bipyridine)3Ru(II) (with its huge range of applications) while rejecting the nearly equally iconic (phenanthroline)3Ru(II). These receptors not only selectively capture (bipyridine)3Ru(II) but also can be redox-switched to release the guest. 1D- and 2D(ROESY)-NMR spectroscopy, luminescence spectroscopy, and molecular modeling enabled this discovery. This outcome allows the control of these applications, e.g., as a photocatalyst or as a luminescent sensor, by selectively hiding or exposing (bipyridine)3Ru(II). Overall, a 3D nanometric object is selected, picked-up, and dropped-off by a discrete molecular host. The multianionic receptors protect excited states of these metal complexes from phenolate quenchers so that the initial step in photocatalytic phenolate oxidation is retarded by nearly 2 orders of magnitude. This work opens the way for (bipyridine)3Ru(II) to be manipulated in the presence of other functional nano-objects so that many of its applications can be commanded and controlled. We have a cyclophane-based toolkit that can emulate some aspects of proteins that selectively participate in cell signaling and metabolic pathways by changing shape upon environmental commands being received at a location remote from the active site.

High-efficiency gold recovery by additive-induced supramolecular polymerization of β-cyclodextrin

Developing an eco-friendly, efficient, and highly selective gold-recovery technology is urgently needed in order to maintain sustainable environments and improve the utilization of resources. Here we report an additive-induced gold recovery paradigm based on precisely controlling the reciprocal transformation and instantaneous assembly of the second-sphere coordinated adducts formed between β-cyclodextrin and tetrabromoaurate anions. The additives initiate a rapid assembly process by co-occupying the binding cavity of β-cyclodextrin along with the tetrabromoaurate anions, leading to the formation of supramolecular polymers that precipitate from aqueous solutions as cocrystals. The efficiency of gold recovery reaches 99.8% when dibutyl carbitol is deployed as the additive. This cocrystallization is highly selective for square-planar tetrabromoaurate anions. In a laboratory-scale gold-recovery protocol, over 94% of gold in electronic waste was recovered at gold concentrations as low as 9.3 ppm. This simple protocol constitutes a promising paradigm for the sustainable recovery of gold, featuring reduced energy consumption, low cost inputs, and the avoidance of environmental pollution.

A Tool, an App and a Field: Fluorescent PET Sensors, Blood Electrolyte Analysis and Molecular Logic as Products of Supramolecular Photoscience from Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka

The general tool of fluorescent PET (photoinduced electron transfer) sensors/switches - a molecular design principle with engineering features - is outlined, with the aid of frontier orbital energy diagrams. Fluorophores such as anthracene, 1,3-diaryl-Δ² -pyrazolines and 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimides are employed within this system, alongside receptors such as amines, carboxylates, crown ethers and amino acids. This tool appealed to a multinational corporation for building a medical analyzer for electrolytes such as Na⁺ , K⁺ , Ca²⁺ and gases like CO₂ , which became a commercially successful application. Finally, the tool was a springboard for chemistry to cross into computer science. The field of molecular logic can elucidate how molecules inside us handle information. Molecular examples of the simplest logic gates such as YES, NOT, OR, AND are described. A case of a human-level computation - visual edge detection - is also included.

Cucurbit[10]uril-Based Orthogonal Supramolecular Polymers with Host-Guest and Coordination Interactions and Its Applications in Anion Classification

A novel orthogonal supramolecular polymer (Q[10]-TPDPB-Lu³⁺) in a host-guest ratio of 2:1 was successfully constructed utilizing the specificity and excellent cavity matching of Q[10] with the tripyridine derivatives (TPDPB). Significantly, non-covalent interactions between Q[10]'s hydrophobic cavities and Lu³⁺ were used to induce charge transfer of TPDPB to TPDPB and TPDPB to Lu³⁺, resulting in the construction of structurally interesting orthogonal assemblies with excellent fluorescence properties. Finally, the Q[10]-TPDPB-Lu³⁺ assemblies were shown to have good recognition and classification of strong and weak acid anions as well as iodide anions, and the classification was accompanied by a clear fluorescence emission change allowing visual observation.

Multiple molecular logic gate arrays in one system of (2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole)Ru(ii) complexes and trimeric cyclophanes in water

Shape-switchable cyclophane hosts allow the controlled capture and release of reactive polypyridineRu(ii) complexes in water. This gives rise to a network of host-guest binding, acid-base reactions in ground and excited states, and chemical redox interconversions. In the case of (2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole)Ru(ii) complexes, several molecular logic gate arrays of varying complexity emerge as a result. Cyclophane-induced 'off-on' switching of luminescence in neutral solution is found to originate from two features of these aromatic hosts: enhancement of radiative decay by the polarizable host and the suppression of nonradiative decay involving deprotonation by reducing the water content within the deep host cavity. These are examples of nanometric coordination chemistry/physics being controlled by inclusion in an open box. The aromatic units of the macrocycle are also responsible for the shape-switching mechanism of wall collapse/erection.

Taming Tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) and Its Reactions in Water by Capture/Release with Shape-Switchable Symmetry-Matched Cyclophanes

Electron/proton transfers in water proceeding from ground/excited states are the elementary reactions of chemistry. These reactions of an iconic class of molecules—polypyridineRu(II)—are now controlled by capturing or releasing three of them with hosts that are shape-switchable. Reversible erection or collapse of the host walls allows such switchability. Some reaction rates are suppressed by factors of up to 120 by inclusive binding of the metal complexes. This puts nanometric coordination chemistry in a box that can be open or shut as necessary. Such second-sphere complexation can allow considerable control to be exerted on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and luminescent sensing involving polypyridineRu(II) compounds. The capturing states of hosts are symmetry-matched to guests for selective binding and display submicromolar affinities. A perching complex, which is an intermediate state between capturing and releasing states, is also demonstrated.

Detecting Pesticide Dodine by Displacement of Fluorescent Acridine from Cucurbit[10]uril Macrocycle

According to a simple guest-replacement fluorescence turn-on mechanism, we constructed a fluorescent probe system based on cucurbit[10]uril (Q[10]) and protonated acridine (AD) to detect the pesticide dodine (DD). Formation of a homoternary inclusion complex AD₂@Q[10] in both aqueous solution and solid state was studied by means of ¹H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Although AD can emit strong fluorescence in aqueous solution, the homoternary inclusion complex AD₂@Q[10] does not exhibit any fluorescence. Upon the addition of the pesticide DD into the aqueous solution of AD₂@Q[10], the AD molecules in the Q[10] cavity are displaced by the pesticide DD, and strong fluorescence recovers. The fluorescent probe system based on Q[10] and AD provided a wide determination of DD from 0 to 4.0 × 10^-5 mol·L^-1 with a low limit of detection of 1.827 × 10^-6 mol·L^-1. The guest-replacement fluorescence turn-on mechanism is also confirmed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Further, the fluorescent probe can directly detect DD residues in real agricultural products, and obvious fluorescence signal was observed under UV irradiation.

Effects of Different Counter Anions on Solid-State Electron Transfer in Viologen Compounds: Modulation of Color and Piezo- and Photochromic Properties

Charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET) underlie the various applications of viologen compounds. However, the CT and ET in solids are still insufficiently understood and difficult to control, which is challenging but fundamental to the design of multifunctional materials. Our strategy is to attempt a delicate control of CT and ET by subjecting model compounds to pressure. In this work, a series of viologens of the same cation with different anions show anion-dependent color and piezo-/photochromism due to ground-state CT and stimuli-induced ET; the ease of solid-state ET can be tuned in the order of Cl^- > Br^- > I^-/BF₄^-/PF₆^-/ClO₄^-. With in situ high pressure UV-vis experiments, we also observed unexpectedly the pressure-induced solid-state ET in [H₂bcpV]·I₂ besides the pressure modulation of the CT absorption. It proves pressure is a more powerful stimulus than light in tuning solid-state CT and ET.
