Dinuclear Cu(I) Halides with Terphenyl Phosphines: Synthesis, Photophysical Studies, and Catalytic Applications in CuAAC Reactions

Structural Diversity and Rare η1 Cu-C Interactions in CuI Complexes of 1,2,3-Triazole-Functionalized Bisphosphines

This manuscript describes the synthesis of copper complexes of 1,2,3-triazolyl-phosphines: o-Ph2P(C6H4){1,2,3-N3CC6H5)C(PPh2)} (L1), (C6H5){1,2,3-N3C(C6H4(o-PPh2))-C(PPh2)} (L2), 3-Ph2P(C5H3N){1,2,3-N3C(C6H5)C(PPh2)} (L3), o-Ph2P(C6H4){1,2,3-N3C(C5H5N)C(PPh2)} (L4), and {(3,5-Ph2PC6H4-o)21,2,3-N3CCH} (L5). The reactions of L1-L3 with CuI salts afforded dimeric complexes having the general formula [Cu2(μ -X)2L2] (L = L1, X = Cl, Br and I: 1 - 3; L= L2, X = Cl, Br and I: 4- 6; L = L3; X = Cl, Br, and I: 7-9). The reaction of L4 with CuI in a 1:2 molar ratio afforded 1D-coordination polymer [{(CuI)2{o-Ph2P(C6H4){1,2,3-N3C(C5H5N)C(PPh2)}-μ-((k1-N)(k2-P,P))}}]n (10). The reaction of L5 with cuprous halides (CuX) (X = Br, I) yielded mononuclear complexes [CuX{(3,5-Ph2PC6H4-o)21,2,3-N3CCH}-κ2P,P] (X = Br, 12; I, 13). Crystal structures of complexes 12 and 13 showed close interactions between CuI and the triazole C7 carbon. These relatively short Cu···C7 separations may be due to the η1-C interaction (dπ-pπ bond) between the triazolic carbon atom (via pz orbital) and CuI or three-centered two-electron interaction between CuI and the triazolic C-H bond. The existence of the Cu···C interaction was further evinced by the QTAIM analysis in compounds 12 and 13.

Copper(I) Complexes of Amide Functionalized Bisphosphine: Proximity Enhanced Metal-Ligand Cooperativity and Its Catalytic Advantage in C(sp3)-H Bond Activation of Unactivated Cycloalkanes in Dehydrogenative Carboxylation Reactions

The reactions of amide functionalized bisphosphine, o-Ph2PC6H4C-(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o (1) (BalaHariPhos), with copper salts is described. Treatment of 1 with CuX in a 1:1 molar ratio yielded chelate complexes of the type [CuX{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o)}-κ2-P,P] (X = Cl, 2; Br, 3; and I, 4), which on subsequent treatment with KOtBu resulted in a dimeric complex [Cu(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(N)C6H4PPh2-o)]2 (5). Interestingly, complexes 2-4 showed weak N-H···Cu interactions. These weak H-bonding interactions are studied in detail both experimentally and computationally. Also, CuI complexes 2-5 were employed in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) of unactivated cycloalkanes in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters. Among complexes 2-5, halide-free dimeric CuI complex 5 showed excellent metal-ligand cooperativity in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters through C(sp3)-H bond activation of unactivated cycloalkanes. Mechanistic details of the catalytic process were established by isolating the precatalyst [Cu{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(NH)C6H4PPh2-o)-κ2-P,P}(OOCPh)] (6) and fully characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR data, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Density functional theory-based calculations further provided a quantitative understanding of the energetics of a series of H atom transfer steps occurring in the catalytic cycle.

Heteroleptic Copper Complexes as Catalysts for the CuAAC Reaction: Counter-Ion Influence in Catalyst Efficiency

A series of nine cationic heteroleptic aryl-BIAN-copper(I) (BIAN = bis-iminoacenaphthene) complexes with the general formula [Cu((E-C6H4)2BIAN)(PPh3)2][X] (E = p-Me, p-iPr, o-iPr; X = BF4, OTf, NO3) 1X–3X were synthesized and fully characterized using several analytical techniques, including NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Except for complexes 2BF4 and 3BF4, which were already reported in our previous works, all remaining complexes are herein described for the first time. Two different strategies were used for the preparation of the complexes: complexes bearing BF4− or OTf− counter-ions (1BF4, 1OTf, 2OTf, and 3OTf) were obtained using the appropriate copper(I) precursors [Cu(NCMe)4][BF4] or [Cu(NCMe)4][OTf], whereas for derivatives 1NO3–3NO3, [Cu(PPh3)2NO3] was used. Their activity as catalysts for the copper azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) was assessed alongside other high activity, previously reported Cu(I) complexes. Comparative studies to determine the influence of the counter-ion and of the aryl substituents were performed. All complexes behaved as active catalysts under neat reaction conditions, at 25 °C and in short reaction times without requiring the use of any additive, with complex 2NO3 being the most efficient derivative, along with other NO3−-bearing complexes.

Novel 1,2,3-triazolyl phosphine with a pyridyl functionality: synthesis, coinage metal complexes, photophysical studies and Cu(I) catalyzed C-O coupling of phenols with aryl bromides

This manuscript describes the synthesis and coinage metal complexes of pyridine appended 1,2,3-triazolyl-phosphine [2-{(C₆H₄N)(C₂(PPh₂)N₃C₆H₅)}] (1), photophysical studies and their catalytic application. The reactions of 1 with copper salts afforded dimeric complexes [{Cu(μ₂-X)}₂{2-(C₆H₄N)(C₂(PPh₂)N₃C₆H₅)}₂] (2, X = Cl; 3, X = Br; and 4, X = I). The crystal structure indicates that the Cu⋯Cu distance in 4 (2.694 Å) is significantly shorter than that in complexes 3 (3.0387 Å) and 2 (3.104 Å), indicating strong cuprophilic interactions which is also supported by NBO calculations, signifying the involvement of 3d_z² orbitals from each Cu atom contributing to the bonding interaction. The fluorescence studies on complexes 2-4 carried out in the solid state showed broad emission bands around 560 nm on excitation at λ_ex = 420 nm. Complex 4 on treatment with two equivalents of 1,10-phenanthroline yielded a mononuclear complex 5 which showed almost complete quenching of fluorescence in the solid state, clearly indicating that the emissive properties of 4 are mainly due to the Cu⋯Cu interaction, along with (M + X)LCT. The reactions of 1 with silver salts led to the isolation of dimeric complexes [{Ag(μ₂-X)}₂{2-(C₆H₄N)(C₂(PPh₂)N₃C₆H₅)}₂] (6, X = Cl; 7, X = Br; and 8, X = I) in good yield. The reaction between 1 and [AuCl(SMe₂)] yielded [{AuCl}{2-(C₆H₄N)(C₂(PPh₂)N₃C₆H₅)}] (9). The molecular structures of 2-5 and 7-9 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The complex 4 is found to be an excellent catalyst for C-O coupling under mild conditions.

New Phosphonite Ligands with High Steric Demand and Low Basicity: Synthesis, Structural Properties and Cyclometalated Complexes of Pt(II)

Two phosphonite ligands bearing the highly sterically demanding 2,6-bis (2,6-dimethylphenyl)phenyl group (ArXyl2), PArXyl2(OPhNO2)2 and PArXyl2(OPhNO2,Me)2, were prepared from the parent dihalophosphines PArXyl2X2 (X = Cl, Br) and the corresponding phenols, 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitro-2,6-dimethylphenol, respectively. DFT methods were used to examine their structural features and to determine three steric descriptors, namely the Tolman cone angle, the percentage of buried volume, and the percentage of the coordination sphere protected by the ligand. A comparison with the related terphenyl phosphines is also provided. Reactions of PArXyl2(OPhNO2)2 and PArXyl2(OPhNO2,Me)2 with several Pt(II) precursors were investigated, revealing a high tendency of both phosphonites to undergo C-H activation processes and generate five- or six-membered cyclometalated structures. The coordination chemistry of the new ligands was explored with isolation, among others, of three carbonyl complexes, 1-3∙CO, and the triphenylphosphine adduct 3∙PPh3. X-ray diffraction methods permitted the determination of the solid-state structures of the mononuclear methyl carbonyl complex 1∙CO, the dinuclear chloride-bridged complex 2 and the doubly cyclometalated complex 3∙SMe2, including the conformations adopted by the ligands upon coordination. All of the new compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy in solution.

Synthesis of heteroleptic phosphine–copper(i) complexes: fluorescence sensing and catalytic properties

A series of heteroleptic Cu(i) complexes were precisely synthesized using different bipyridine and diphosphine ligands. These complexes exhibited fluorescence sensing towards silver ions and high catalytic activity towards the CuAAC reaction.
