Solvent-Dependent Assembly and Magnetic Relaxation Behaviors of [Cu4I3] Cluster-Based Lanthanide MOFs: Acting as Efficient Catalysts for Carbon Dioxide Conversion with Propargylic Alcohols

The use of metal-organic frameworks as heterogeneous catalysts

This article presents an overview of some of the available research studies of MOFs as catalysts. Catalytic studies of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with modified surfaces, MOFs with precious metals such as palladium, platinum, and silver, with zirconium, hafnium, copper, alkaline earth metals, lanthanides are generalized. The studies of the catalytic activity of micro- and mesoporous MOF structures are described.

Highly Efficient Conversion of Propargylic Alcohols and Propargylic Amines with CO2 Activated by Noble-Metal-Free Catalyst Cu2 O@ZIF-8

The cyclization reactions of propargylic alcohols and propargylic amines with CO₂ are important in industrial applications, but it was a great challenge that non-noble-metal catalysts catalyzed both reactions under mild conditions. Herein, the catalyst Cu₂ O@ZIF-8 was prepared by encapsulating Cu₂ O nanoparticles into robust ZIF-8, and it can effectively catalyze the cyclization of both propargylic alcohols and propargylic amines with CO₂ into valuable α-alkylidene cyclic carbonates and oxazolidinones with turnover numbers (TONs) of 12.1 and 19.6, which can be recycled at least five times. The mechanisms were further uncovered by NMR, FTIR, ¹³ C isotope-labeling experiments and DFT calculations, in which Cu₂ O and DBU can synergistically activate the C≡C bond and the hydroxy/amino group of substrates. Importantly, it is the first example of a noble-metal-free catalyst that can catalyze both propargylic alcohols and propargylic amines with CO₂ simultaneously.

Low-Temperature and Additive-Free Synthesis of Spherical MIL-101(Cr) with Enhanced Dye Adsorption Performance

The chromium-benzenedicarboxylate metal–organic framework (MOF), MIL-101(Cr), is one of the most well-investigated and widely used prototypical MOFs. Regarding its synthesis, the use of a toxic modulator (usually HF) and high reaction temperature (220 °C) are the main factors hindering its further expansion of production and utilization. In fact, high quality MIL-101(Cr) crystals can be prepared at a much lower temperature (160 °C) with spherical morphology via an additive-free approach. Compared to traditional octahedral MIL-101(Cr), the spherical MIL-101(Cr) possesses higher adsorption performance toward dye molecules, including methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RB). The results suggest that toxic additives and high reaction temperatures are not essential in the synthesis of MIL-101(Cr), and the fabrication of spherical MIL-101(Cr) may offer a facile and effective pathway for the large-scale industrial application of MIL-101(Cr).

Anchoring Ag(I) into Nitro-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks: Effectively Catalyzing Cycloaddition of CO2 with Propargylic Alcohols under Mild Conditions

Carboxylative cyclization of propargylic alcohols with CO₂ is significant in synthetic chemistry, but harsh conditions are often needed according to reported results. Herein, a new stable nitro-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) of {[Co₃(L)₂(bpy)₄(H₂O)₂]·DMF·H₂O·bpy}_n (1) was fabricated through the solvothermal reaction, which exhibited excellent stability in acid and basic solutions. Owing to the porous structure, unsaturated metal sites, and uncoordinated 4,4'-bpy ligands, 1 can serve as an excellent platform for catalytic applications. Hence, Ag(I) ions were incorporated in 1 through a postsynthetic method, and the as-synthesized Ag-1 catalyst with low metal loading (0.64 mol %) displayed excellent catalytic performance in the chemical fixation of CO₂ with alkynols under room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The results of ¹H NMR analyses further confirmed that Ag-1 can efficiently activate hydroxyl groups and promote the reaction. Moreover, the turnover frequency (TOF) of the Ag-1 catalyst can reach 262 h^-1 in a short period of time, which is a high TOF value among the state-of-the-art MOF-based catalysts for catalyzing cycloaddition of CO₂ with propargylic alcohols.

Rational Design of Nonbonded Point Charge Models for Highly Charged Metal Cations with Lennard-Jones 12-6 Potential

Here, we developed nonbonded point charge models using a simple Lennard-Jones (LJ) 12-6 potential for highly charged metal cations (18 trivalent and 6 tetravalent ions) for use with 11 water models of TIP3P, OPC3, SPC/E, SPC/E_b, TIP3P-FB, a99SB-disp, TIP4P-Ew, OPC, TIP4P/2005, TIP4P-D, and TIP4P-FB. The designed models simultaneously reproduce the hydration free energy (HFE) and ion-oxygen distance (IOD) in the first hydration shell with an error within 1 kcal/mol and 0.01 Å on average, respectively, and yield reasonable coordination numbers for most cations. Such performance is equivalent to the previously reported point charge models using a more complex 12-6-4 LJ-type potential, while the LJ R parameters of our models are much close to Shannon's revised effective ion radii than that of the 12-6-4 models. Our designed models overestimate the diffusion constants of several trivalent ions by 5-68%. The performance in predicting osmotic coefficients of trivalent chlorides in aqueous solution depends on the salt type. A calibration of cation-anion interacting LJ parameters reproduces the experimental osmotic coefficients of an AlCl₃ solution at 0.2-3.0 mol/L. The effectiveness of our new models is further demonstrated by simulating a metalloprotein system with four force field/water combinations. This work facilitates accurate modeling of metal-containing systems by a variety of force fields and water models in aqueous solution.

Non-Noble-Metal Metal-Organic-Framework-Catalyzed Carboxylative Cyclization of Propargylic Amines with Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide under Ambient Conditions

The coupling reaction of propargylic amines and carbon dioxide (CO₂) to synthesize 2-oxazolidinones is an important reaction in industrial production, and yet harsh reaction conditions and noble-metal catalysts are often required to achieve high product yields. Herein, one novel noble-metal-free three-dimensional framework, [Mg₃Cu₂I₂(IN)₄(HCOO)₂(DEF)₄]_n (1), assembled by magnesium and copper clusters was synthesized and applied to this reaction. Compound 1 displays excellent solvent stability. Importantly, 1, acting as heterogeneous catalyst, can highly catalyze the cyclization of propargylic amines with CO₂ under atmospheric pressure at room temperature, which can be recycled at least five times without an obvious decrease of the catalytic activity. NMR spectroscopy, coupled with ¹³C-isotope- and deuterium-labeling experiments, clearly clarifies the mechanism of this catalytic system: CO₂ was successfully captured and converted to the product of 2-oxazolidinones, the C≡C bond of propargylic amines can be effectively activated by 1, and proton transfer was involved in the reaction process. Density functional theory calculations are further conducted to uncover the reaction path and the crucial role of compound 1 during the reaction.

Self-Assembly of 1D Double-Chain and 3D Diamondoid Networks of Lanthanide Coordination Polymers through In Situ-Generated Ligands: High-Pressure CO2 Adsorption and Photoluminescence Properties

Two new lanthanide-based coordination polymers, [Sm2(bzz)(ben)6(H2O)3]·0.5H2O (1) and [Eu(bbz)(ben)3] (2), were synthesized and characterized. The described products were formed from in situ-generated benzoate (ben) and N'-benzoylbenzohydrazide (bbz) ligands, which were the products of transformation of originally added benzhydrazide (bzz) under hydrothermal conditions. Compound 1 exhibits a one-dimensional (1D) double-chain structure built up from the connection of the central Sm3+ ions with a mixture of bzz and ben ligands. On the other hand, 2 features a 3D network with a 4-connected (66) dia topology constructed from dinuclear [Eu2(ben)6] secondary building units and bbz linkers. High-pressure CO2 sorption studies of activated 1 show that maximum uptake increases to exceptionally high values of 376.7 cm3 g-1 (42.5 wt%) under a pressure of 50 bar at 298 K with good recyclability. Meanwhile, 2 shows a typical red emission in the solid state at room temperature with the decay lifetime of 1.2 ms.

A copper(ii)-based porous metal-organic framework for the efficient and rapid capture of toxic oxo-anion pollutants from water

The efficient and selective capture of toxic oxo-anions is highly desirable for environmental retrieval and hazardous waste disposal. This has remained an important task and gained considerable scientific attention due to their harmful effects on the ecosystem and human health. Herein, a porous cationic metal-organic framework (MOF), namely, [Cu₃Cl(L)(H₂O)₂]·Cl·4DMA·8H₂O (1), was synthesized (H₄L = 1,4,8,11-tetrazacyclotetradecane-N,N',N'',N'''-tetramethylenecinnamic acid and DMA = N,N'-dimethylacetamide). 1 shows high stability in aqueous solution and represents an extraordinary example that is capable of efficiently capturing environmentally toxic Cr₂O₇^2- and MnO₄^- anions. Moreover, the removal of Cr₂O₇^2- and MnO₄^- anions from water was also explored in the presence of other competing anions.

Highly efficient fluorescent chemosensor for nitro antibiotic detection based on luminescent coordination polymers with 2,6-di(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine

A series of isostructural porous supramolecular frameworks, {[M(DCPP)(H₂O)]·(DMF)}_n, are synthesized. The as-obtained fluorescent Zn-MOF has good recognition ability towards nitro-antibiotics with low detection limits and a wide linear range.
