Abstract
We present a pH-dependent study of the excited state dynamics of a novel Ru complex bearing a 4-hydroxy thiazol-substituted dppz (dipyridophenazine) ligand (RuTzOH) and its deprotonated form (RuTzO-). We combine steady-state and time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy with electrochemical investigations to characterize the excited state relaxation, which upon photoexcitation at 400 nm is determined by a multitude of initially populated MLCT states for both complexes. Subsequently, for RuTzOH, two long-lived excited states are populated, leading to dual emission from the complexes, a feature that vanishes upon deprotonation. Upon deprotonation, the electron density on the dppz moiety increases significantly, leading to rapid energy populating ligand-centered states and thus deactivating the initially excited MLCT states.

Abstract
Three monoruthenium complexes 1(PF6)2-3(PF6)2 bearing an N(CH3)-bridged ligand have been synthesized and characterized. These complexes have a general formula of [Ru(bpy)2(L)](PF6)2, where L is a 2,5-di(N-methyl-N'-(pyrid-2-yl)amino)pyrazine (dapz) derivative with various substituents, and bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these compounds have been examined. The solid-state structure of complex 3(PF6)2 is studied by single-crystal X-ray analysis. These complexes show two well-separated emission bands centered at 451 and 646 nm (Δλmax = 195 nm) for 1(PF6)2, 465 and 627 nm (Δλmax = 162 nm) for 2(PF6)2, and 455 and 608 nm (Δλmax = 153 nm) for 3(PF6)2 in dilute acetonitrile solution, respectively. The emission maxima of the higher-energy emission bands of these complexes are similar, while the lower-energy emission bands are dependent on the electronic nature of substituents. These complexes display two consecutive redox couples owing to the stepwise oxidation of the N(CH3)-bridged ligand and ruthenium component. Moreover, these experimental observations are analyzed by computational investigation.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a macrocyclic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) connected by one [Ru(bpy)3]2+ unit (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), a photoactive metal complex that provides photosensitivity and potential biomedical applications to this polymer structure. The PEO chain provides biocompatibility, water solubility, and topological play. The macrocycles were successfully synthesized by copper-free click cycloaddition between a bifunctional dibenzocyclooctyne (DBCO)-PEO precursor and 4,4'-diazido-2,2'-bipyridine, followed by complexation with [Ru(bpy)2Cl2]. The cyclic product accumulated efficiently in MCF7 cancer cells and exhibited a longer fluorescence lifetime than its linear analogue, likely due to differences in the accessibility of the ligand-centered/intraligand states of Ru polypyridyls in both topologies.

Abstract
The synthesis, electrochemistry, and photophysical characterization of five 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine ruthenium complexes (Ru-tpy complexes) is reported. The electrochemical and photophysical behavior varied depending on the ligands, i.e., amine (NH3), acetonitrile (AN), and bis(pyrazolyl)methane (bpm), for this series of Ru-tpy complexes. The target [Ru(tpy)(AN)3]2+ and [Ru(tpy)(bpm)(AN)]2+ complexes were found to have low-emission quantum yields in low-temperature observations. To better understand this phenomenon, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to simulate the singlet ground state (S0), Te, and metal-centered excited states (3MC) of these complexes. The calculated energy barriers between Te and the low-lying 3MC state for [Ru(tpy)(AN)3]2+ and [Ru(tpy)(bpm)(AN)]2+ provided clear evidence in support of their emitting state decay behavior. Developing a knowledge of the underlying photophysics of these Ru-tpy complexes will allow new complexes to be designed for use in photophysical and photochemical applications in the future.

Abstract
The design of photoactive systems capable of storing and relaying multiple electrons is highly demanded in the field of artificial photosynthesis, where transformations of interest rely on multielectronic redox processes. The photophysical properties of the ruthenium photosensitizer [(bpy)2 Ru(oxim-dppqp)]2+ (Ru), storing two electrons coupled to two protons on the π-extended oxim-dppqp ligand under light-driven conditions, are investigated by means of excitation wavelength-dependent resonance Raman and transient absorption spectroscopies, in combination with time-dependent density functional theory; the results are discussed in comparison to the parent [(bpy)2 Ru(dppz)]2+ and [(bpy)2 Ru(oxo-dppqp)]2+ complexes. In addition, this study provides in-depth insights on the impact of protonation or of accumulation of multiple reducing equivalents on the reactive excited states.

Abstract
Two new dinuclear copper(ii) complexes, [Cu(ambt)2(cnba)4] (1) and [Cu(ambt)2(clba)4] (2) were synthesized with 2-amino-6-methoxybenzothiazole (ambt) as the main ligand. The structures of the two complexes were characterized by single-crystal XRD. The binding between CT-DNA (calf thymus DNA) and the complexes was evaluated by viscometry, electronic absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy, and the binding constants were calculated using the Stern-Volmer equation. The complexes were intercalatively bound to CT-DNA, and [Cu(ambt)2(clba)4] having a greater binding constant than [Cu(ambt)2(cnba)4]. The two complexes had better antitumor properties against HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma), A549 (human lung carcinoma), and HeLa (human cervical carcinoma) tumor cell lines than their respective ligands and cisplatin. Furthermore, [Cu(ambt)2(clba)4] had a stronger inhibitory ability on the three types of tumor cells than [Cu(ambt)2(cnba)4], which is congruent with the binding power of the complexes with DNA. Flow cytometry revealed that [Cu(ambt)2(cnba)4] and [Cu(ambt)2(clba)4] could trigger apoptosis or necrosis, arrest the HepG2 cell cycles, and cause G0/G1-phase cells to accumulate.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes are among the most popular sensitizers in photocatalysis, but they face some severe limitations concerning accessible excited-state energies and photostability that could hamper future applications. In this study, the borylation of heteroleptic ruthenium(II) cyanide complexes with α-diimine ancillary ligands is identified as a useful concept to elevate the energies of photoactive metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) states and to obtain unusually photorobust compounds suitable for thermodynamically challenging energy transfer catalysis as well as oxidative and reductive photoredox catalysis. B(C6F5)3 groups attached to the CN - ligands stabilize the metal-based t2g-like orbitals by ∼0.8 eV, leading to high 3MLCT energies (up to 2.50 eV) that are more typical for cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes. Through variation of their α-diimine ligands, nonradiative excited-state relaxation pathways involving higher-lying metal-centered states can be controlled, and their luminescence quantum yields and MLCT lifetimes can be optimized. These combined properties make the respective isocyanoborato complexes amenable to photochemical reactions for which common ruthenium(II)-based sensitizers are unsuited, due to a lack of sufficient triplet energy or excited-state redox power. Specifically, this includes photoisomerization reactions, sensitization of nickel-catalyzed cross-couplings, pinacol couplings, and oxidative decarboxylative C-C couplings. Our work is relevant in the greater context of tailoring photoactive coordination compounds to current challenges in synthetic photochemistry and solar energy conversion.
