Abstract
Unsymmetrical bis-cyclometalated dicarboxylato complexes (OC-6-32)-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CR)2] [tpy = cyclometalated 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine, R = t-Bu (1), Me (2), Ph (3), CF3 (4)], are obtained from the reaction of cis-[Pt(tpy)2] with the appropriate PhI(O2CR)2 reagent. Treatment of complexes of this type with different carboxylates (R'CO2-) results in the formation of mixed-carboxylato derivatives, namely (OC-6-43)-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CMe)(O2CR')] [R' = t-Bu (5), CF3 (6), Ph (7)], (OC-6-34)-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CCF3)(O2CR')] [R' = t-Bu (8), Me (9), Ph (10)], and (OC-6-34)-[Pt(tpy)2(O2C-t-Bu)(O2CMe)] (11). Irradiation of 1-3 and 5-11 with UV light (365 nm) in MeCN gives 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl pivalate (12), 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl acetate (13) or 5-methyl-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl benzoate (14) as the major photoproduct from most complexes, resulting from a reductive C-O coupling between a tpy ligand and a carboxylato ligand. Cyclometalation of 12-14 at the ensuing Pt(II) species to produce cis-[Pt(tpy)(tpyO2CR/R')], reduction to cis-[Pt(tpy)2] and isomerization to (OC-6-33)-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CR/R')2] are identified as secondary processes in most cases. In contrast, complex 4 exclusively photoisomerizes to (OC-6-33)-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CCF3)2] (4'). The C-O couplings are favored for the most electron-rich carboxylato ligands and occur predominantly from the carboxylato trans to N. Consistent with this, a computational study reveals that the lowest singlet and triplet LMCT excited states result from electronic transitions to a dσ* orbital distributed along the N-Pt-O axis, which would trigger the observed processes.

Abstract
Dicationic, C2-symmetrical, tris-chelate Pt(IV) complexes of general formula [Pt(trz)2(N∧N)](OTf)2, bearing two cyclometalated 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (trz) ligands and one aromatic diimine [N∧N = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 2), 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy, 3), 4,4'-dimethoxi-2,2'-bipyridine (dMeO-bpy, 4), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 5), 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bphen, 6), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz, 7), or 2,3-diphenylpyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline (dpprzphen, 8)] are obtained through chloride abstraction from [PtCl2(trz)2] (1) using AgOTf in the presence of the corresponding diimine. Complexes 2-4 show long-lived phosphorescence from 3LC excited states involving the diimine ligand, with quantum yields that reach 0.18 in solution and 0.58 in the solid matrix at room temperature for 3. Derivatives with more extended aromatic systems show dual phosphorescent/fluorescent emissions (5, 6) or mainly fluorescence (7, 8) in solution. Comparisons with similar complexes bearing cyclometalated 2-arylpyridines instead of aryl-N-heterocyclic carbenes indicate that the {Pt(trz)2} subunit is crucial to enable efficient emissions from diimine-centered excited states. It is also shown that the introduction of protective bulky substituents on the diimine, such as the tert-butyl groups in 3, is a key strategy to reach higher emission efficiencies. The new compounds represent rare examples of luminescent Pt(IV) complexes that show quasi-reversible one-electron reductions, indicating an unusually high redox stability.

Abstract
Platinum(II) and platinum(IV) compounds were prepared by the stereoselective and regioselective reactions of thiophene-derived cyclohexyl diimine C^N^N-ligands with [Pt2Me4(μ-SMe2)2]. Newly synthesized ligands were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and Pt(II)/Pt(IV) compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. UV-vis absorbance and photoluminescence measurements were performed on newly synthesized complexes, as well as structurally related Pt(II)/Pt(IV) compounds with benzene-derived cyclohexyl diimine ligands, in dichloromethane solution, as solids, and as 5% by weight PMMA-doped films. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed, and the results were compared with the observed spectroscopic properties of the newly synthesized complexes. X-ray total scattering measurements and real space pair distribution function analysis were performed on the synthesized complexes to examine the local- and intermediate-range atomic structures of the emissive solid states.

Abstract
Exploring novel and existing design principles to tune the photochemical and photophysical properties of transition-metal complexes is an important goal in contemporary research. Here, we highlight the influence of constitutional isomers of pyridyl-1,2,3-triazolylidene mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligands on the photophysical and photochemical properties of the corresponding tetracarbonyl group 6 metal complexes (M = Cr, Mo, W). All new complexes [M(C-C)] presented herein incorporate a C-C linked pyridyl-MIC ligand and were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, and 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Detailed photophysical investigations reveal a single emission in the VIS region, which extends into the NIR with lifetimes of up to 3.5 μs in the solid state at lower temperatures. The quantum yields were determined for all three complexes, and, in particular, the W0 complex shows an unusually high quantum yield of 29% compared to the values of 0.02% obtained for the [M(C-N)] isomers investigated in earlier works. Beyond this, the investigated W0 complex also exhibits an emission at 717 nm in a fluid solution. The combination of luminescence and FTIR-step scan spectroscopy with theoretical calculations reveals an emissive 3MLCT state. Irradiation of the presented complexes leads to a clean cleavage of one axial CO ligand. A metastable 16 VE species with a vacant axial coordination site was detected in the solid state at low temperatures. In solution, the respective solvato complexes are formed. A dark reverse reaction is observed, as previously described for the [M(C-N)] analogues. The increased electron density induced by the C-C linked pyridyl-MIC ligand leads to an increased kinetic rate constant for the reformation of the starting species and is also reflected in the lower photodissociation quantum yields.

Abstract
Given the widely recognized bioactivity of 2-arylbenzothiazoles against tumor cells, we have designed a new family of luminescent heteroleptic pentafluorophenyl-bis(2-phenylbenzothiazolyl) PtIV derivatives, fac-[Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)L]n+ (n = 1, 0) [L = 4-Mepy 1, 4-pyridylbenzothiazole (pybt) 2, 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) 3, 1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) 4 (E/Z ratio: 90/10), 1,4-bis-(pyridyl)butadiyne (bpyb) 5, trifluoroacetate (-OCOCF3) 6] and a dinuclear complex [{Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)}2(μ-bpyb)](PF6)27, in which the trans ligand to the metalated C-(pbt) was varied to modify the optical properties and lipophilicity. Their photophysical properties were systematically studied through experimental and theoretical investigations, which were strongly dependent on the identity of the N-bonded ligand. Thus, complexes 1, 3 and 6 display, in different media, emission from the triplet excited states of primarily intraligand 3ILCT nature localized on the pbt ligand, while the emissions of 2, 5 and 7 were ascribed to a mixture of close 3IL'(N donor)/3ILCT(pbt) excited states, as supported by lifetime measurements and theoretical calculations. Irradiation of the initial E/Z mixture of 4 (15 min) led to a steady state composed of roughly 1 : 1.15 (E : Z) and this complex was not emissive at room temperature due to an enhanced intramolecular E to Z isomerization process of the 1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene ligand. Complexes 1-3 and 6 showed excellent quantum yields for the generation of singlet oxygen in aerated MeCN solution with the values of ϕ(1O2) ranging from 0.66 to 0.86 using phenalenone as a reference. Cationic complexes 1-3 exhibited remarkable efficacy in the nanomolar range against A549 (lung carcinoma) and HeLa (cervix carcinoma) cell lines with notable selectivity relative to the non-tumorigenic BEAS-2B (bronchial epithelium) cells. In the A549 cell line, the neutral complex 6 showed low cytotoxicity (IC50: 29.40 μM) and high photocytotoxicity (IC50: 5.75) when cells were irradiated with blue light for 15 min. These complexes do not show evidence of DNA interaction.

Abstract
Unsymmetrical dicarboxylato complexes [Pt(tpy)2(O2CR)2] [tpy = cyclometalated 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine, R = Me, CF3] react with the terminal alkynes 4-methoxyphenylacetylene, phenylacetylene, 4-(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene or 3,5-difluorophenylacetylene in the presence of a base to produce complexes mer-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CR)(CCAr)], in which the metalated carbon atoms are in a meridional arrangement. Irradiation of the trifluoroacetato derivatives with a 365 nm LED source leads to isomerization to the facial complexes, which can be converted to chlorido derivatives upon reaction with NH4Cl. In contrast, irradiation of the acetato derivatives leads to four different processes, namely, reduction to cis-[Pt(tpy)2], annulations involving one of the tpy ligands and the Cα and Cβ atoms of the alkynyl to give benzoquinolizinium derivatives, isomerization to the facial geometry, or C-O couplings between the acetato ligand and one tpy. The first two processes are favored by the presence of electron-donating groups on the alkynyl, whereas electron-withdrawing groups favor the last two. Irradiation of complexes fac-[Pt(tpy)2(O2CCF3)(CCAr)] with a medium-pressure Hg UV lamp leads to a reductive C-C coupling involving the alkynyl Cα atom and one of the tpy ligands to give pyridoisoindolium derivatives, except for the methoxyphenylacetylide derivative, which is photostable. On the basis of TDDFT calculations, the photoreactivity of the mer complexes is attributed to 3LLCT [π(alkynyl) → π*(tpy)] excited states for annulations or 3LMCT [π(alkynyl) → dσ*] excited states for the rest of the processes, which are accessible through thermal population from 3LC(tpy) states. The C-C couplings from the fac complexes are attributed to photoreactive pentacoordinate intermediates.

Abstract
Platinum(II) complexes of NNC-cyclometalating ligands based on 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine (HL1) have been widely investigated for their luminescence properties. We describe how PtL1Cl and five analogues with differently substituted aryl rings, PtL2-6Cl, can be oxidized with chlorine and/or iodobenzene dichloride to generate Pt(IV) compounds of the form Pt(NNC-Ln)Cl3 (n = 1-6). The molecular structures of several of them have been determined by X-ray diffraction. These PtLnCl3 compounds react with 2-arylpyridines to give a new class of Pt(IV) complex of the form [Pt(NNC)(NC)Cl]+. Elevated temperatures are required, and the reaction is accompanied by competitive reduction processes and generation of side-products; however, four examples of such complexes have been isolated and their molecular structures determined. Reaction of PtL1Cl3 with HL1 similarly generates [Pt(NNC-L1)2]2+, which we believe to be the first example of a bis-tridentate Pt(IV) complex. The lowest-energy bands in the UV-vis absorption spectra of all the PtLnCl3 compounds are displaced to higher energy relative to the Pt(II) precursors, but they red-shift with the electron richness of the aryl ring, consistent with predominantly 1[πAr → π*NN] character to the pertinent excited state. A similar trend is observed for the [Pt(NNC)(NC)Cl]+ complexes. They display phosphorescence in solution at room temperature, centered around 500 nm for [PtL1(ppy)Cl]+ and [Pt(L1)2]2+, and 550 nm for methoxy-substituted derivatives. The lifetimes are in the microsecond range, rising to hundreds of microseconds at 77 K, consistent with triplet excited states of primarily 3[πAr → π*NN] character with relatively little participation of the metal.

Abstract
This work tackles the photochemistry of a series of mononuclear Cr0, Mo0 and W0 carbonyl complexes containing a bidentate mesoionic carbene ligand of the 1,2,3‐triazol‐5‐ylidene type. FTIR spectroscopy, combined with density functional theory calculations, revealed a clean photo‐induced reaction in organic solvents (acetonitrile, pyridine, valeronitrile) to give mainly one photoproduct with monosubstitution of a carbonyl ligand for a solvent molecule. The highest photodissociation quantum yields were reached for the Cr0 complex under UV irradiation (266 nm). Based on previous investigations, the kinetics of the dark reverse reactions have now been determined, with reaction times of up to several hours in pyridine. Photochemical studies in the solid state (KBr matrix, frozen solution) also showed light‐induced reactivity with stabilization of the metastable intermediate with a free coordination site at very low temperature. The identified reactive species emphasizes a mechanism without ligand–sphere reorganization.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, photophysical properties, and electrochemistry of the first series of Pt(IV) tris-chelates bearing cyclometalated aryl-NHC ligands are reported. The complexes have the general formula [Pt(trz)2(C∧N)]+, combining two units of the cyclometalated, mesoionic aryl-NHC ligand 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (trz) with a cyclometalated 2-arylpyridine [C∧N = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine (tpy), 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine (thpy), 2-(9,9-dimethylfluoren-2-yl)pyridine (flpy)], and presenting a mer arrangement or metalated aryls. They exhibit a significant photostability under UV irradiation and long-lived phosphorescence in the blue to yellow color range, arising from 3LC excited states involving the C∧N ligands, with quantum yields of up to 0.34 in fluid solution and 0.77 in the rigid matrix at 298 K. The time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations reveal that nonemissive, deactivating excited states of ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) character are pushed to high energies as a consequence of the strong σ-donating ability of the carbenic moieties, making the Pt(trz)2 subunit an essential structural component that enables efficient emissions from the chromophoric C∧N ligands, with potential application for the development of different Pt(IV) emitters with tunable properties.

We introduce phosphorescent platinum aryl acetylide complexes supported by tert-butyl-isocyanide and strongly σ-donating acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC) ligands. The precursor complexes cis-[Pt(CNtBu)2(C≡CAr)2] (4a-4f) are treated with diethylamine, which undergoes nucleophilic addition with one of the isocyanides to form the cis-[Pt(CNtBu)(ADC)(C≡CAr)2] complexes (5a-5f). The new compounds incorporate either electron-donating groups (4-OMe and 4-NMe2) or electron-withdrawing groups [3,5-(OMe)2, 3,5-(CF3)2, 4-CN, and 4-NO2] on the aryl acetylide. Experimental HOMO-LUMO gaps, estimated from cyclic voltammetry, span the range of 2.68-3.61 eV and are in most cases smaller than the unsubstituted parent complex, as corroborated by DFT. In the ADC complexes, peak photoluminescence wavelengths span the range of 428 nm (2a, unsubstituted phenylacetylide) to 525 nm (5f, 4-NO2-substituted), with the substituents inducing a red shift in all cases. The phosphorescence E0,0 values and electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gaps are loosely correlated, showing that both can be reduced by either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents on the aryl acetylides. The photoluminescence quantum yields in the ADC complexes are between 0.044 and 0.31 and the lifetimes are between 4.8 and 14 μs, a factor of 1.8-10× higher (for ΦPL) and 1.2-3.6× longer (for τ) than the respective isocyanide precursor (ΦPL = 0.014-0.12, τ = 2.8-8.2 μs).

Abstract
![]()
Five cationic iridium(III)
complexes (1–5) were synthesized
exploiting two triazole-based cyclometalating
ligands, namely, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole
(A) and the corresponding mesoionic carbene 1,3-dimethyl-4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (B). From the combination
of these two ligands and the ancillary one, i.e., 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine (for 1–3) or tert-butyl isocyanide (for 4 and 5), not only the typical bis-heteroleptic complexes
but also the much less explored tris-heteroleptic analogues (2 and 5) could be synthesized. The redox and
emission properties of all of the complexes are effectively fine-tuned
by the different ligands: (i) cyclometalating ligand A induces a stronger highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) stabilization
compared to B and leads to complexes with progressively
narrower HOMO–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and
redox gaps, and lower emission energy; (ii) complexes 1–3, equipped with the bipyridine ancillary ligand,
display fully reversible redox processes and emit from predominantly
metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states with high emission quantum
yields, up to 60% in polymeric matrix; (iii) complexes 4 and 5, equipped with high-field isocyanide ligands,
display irreversible redox processes and high-energy emission from
strongly ligand-centered triplets with long emission lifetimes but
relatively low quantum yields (below 6%, both in room-temperature
solution and in solid state). This work demonstrates the versatility
of phenyl-triazole derivatives as cyclometalating ligands with different
chelation modes (i.e., C∧N and C∧C:) for the synthesis of photoactive iridium(III) complexes with
highly tunable properties. Triazole-based
cyclometalating ligands serving as both standard
C∧N chelators (as in 4-phenyl-triazole) and C∧C: carbene ones (as in 4-phenyl-triazolylidene) have
been used to synthesize a series of cationic iridium(III) complexes.
Accordingly, unusual tris-heteroleptic complexes could be obtained
by simultaneously exploiting both chelation modes. These ligands allow
fine tuning of the properties of the related complexes, which exhibit
luminescence all the way from blue to red and quantum yields up to
60% in a diluted polymeric matrix at 298 K.

Abstract
The first series of neutral, tris-chelate, phosphorecent Pt(IV) complexes is reported, which combine two cyclometalated 2-arylpyridine ligands and a dimetalated biaryl. The introduction of biaryl ligands is achieved under mild conditions through the oxidative addition of dibenzoiodolium ions to Pt(II) precursors to give Pt(IV) intermediates with a singly metalated 2-(2-iodoaryl)aryl ligand, followed by the reductive metalation of the C-I bond. The modulation of emission characteristics via derivatization of both types of ligands is demonstrated.

Abstract
Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) of the 1,2,3-triazolylidene type have established themselves as a popular class of compounds over the past decade. Primary reasons for this popularity are their modular synthesis and their strong donor properties. While such MICs have mostly been used in combination with transition metals, the past few years have also seen their utility together with main group elements. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent developments on this class of compounds that include, among others, (i) cationic and anionic MIC ligands, (ii) the donor/acceptor properties of these ligands with a focus on the several methods that are known for estimating such donor/acceptor properties, (iii) a detailed overview of 3d metal complexes and main group compounds with these MIC ligands, (iv) results on the redox and photophysical properties of compounds based on MIC ligands, and (v) an overview on electrocatalysis, redox-switchable catalysis, and small-molecule activation to highlight the applications of compounds based on MIC ligands in contemporary chemistry. By discussing several aspects from the synthetic, spectroscopic, and application point of view of these classes of compounds, we highlight the state of the art of compounds containing MICs and present a perspective for future research in this field.

Abstract
In this report, we synthesized two series of deep-blue-emitting homoleptic iridium(III) phosphors bearing 1,2,4-triazol-3-ylidene and 5-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylidene cyclometalate. Compared with reported synthetic routes using Ag2O as the promoter, herein, we adopted a different strategy to furnish these complexes in high yields. Also, the meridional to facial isomerization was executed in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. These phosphors were examined using NMR spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and photophysical methods. The results revealed that electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl substitution on the N-heterocyclic carbene fragment only gave a minor variation of photoluminescence peak wavelengths and a decrease in radiative lifetime but notable reduction in thermal stabilities. The parent 1,2,4-triazol-3-ylidene complexes have been demonstrated to be suitable for use as deep-blue phosphors, with structured emission with the peak max. located at ∼420 nm and with photoluminescence quantum yields in a range of 34.8-42.5% in degassed THF solution at RT. Fabrication of both the phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and phosphor-sensitized OLEDs (or hyperphosphorescence) was successfully conducted, from which the OLED device based on m-tz1 showed a max. external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10% with CIEx,y coordinates of 0.15, 0.06, while the corresponding hyperphosphorescent OLED using m-tz2 as a sensitizer and t-DABNA as a terminal emitter afforded a significantly improved max. EQE of 19.7%, EL λmax of 468 nm, and FWHM of 31 nm with CIEx,y coordinates of 0.12, 0.13.

Abstract
The synthesis of bis-cyclometalated halido(aryl) Pt(IV) complexes [PtX(Ar)(C^N)2], with C^N = cyclometalated 4-(tert-butyl)-2-phenylpyridine (bppy), 2-(p-tolyl)pyridine (tpy), 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine (thpy), or 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq), X = I, Cl, or F, and Ar = Ph (for all C^N ligands) or t-BuPh (for C^N = tpy), and the photophysical properties of the chlorido and fluorido series is reported. The oxidative addition of iodobenzene to cis-[Pt(C^N)2] precursors is demonstrated to occur in MeCN under irradiation with visible light to give complexes [PtI(Ph)(C^N)2], presumably involving radical species that also produce the activation of the solvent to give cyanomethyl complexes [PtI(CH2CN)(C^N)2]. The introduction of an aryl ligand can also be achieved by reacting cis-[Pt(C^N)2] with (Ar2I)PF6 (Ar = Ph, t-BuPh), which affords cationic intermediates of the type [Pt(Ar)(C^N)2(NCMe)]+. The subsequent addition of an iodide or chloride salt gives the corresponding iodido- or chlorido(aryl) complexes. The fluorido(aryl) derivatives can be obtained from the iodido complexes by halide exchange using AgF. The chlorido- and fluorido(aryl) complexes display intense phosphorescence in deaerated CH2Cl2 solution and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films at 298 K from triplet excited states primarily localized on the cyclometalated ligands (3LC) with a small MLCT admixture. Compared with the chlorido complexes, the fluorido derivatives consistently present significantly shorter emission lifetimes and higher radiative and nonradiative rate constants due to a greater MLCT contribution to the emissive state. In contrast, the introduction of the t-BuPh group did not induce significant changes in radiative rates with respect to the phenyl complexes.
