Computational Prediction of All Lanthanide Aqua Ion Acidity Constants

Local Coordination Environment of Lanthanides Adsorbed onto Cr- and Zr-based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Separating individual lanthanide (Ln) elements in aqueous mixtures is challenging. Ion-selective capture by porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), is a promising approach. To design ion-selective MOFs, molecular details of the Ln adsorption complexes within the MOFs must be understood. We determine the local coordination environment of lanthanides Nd(III), Gd(III), and Lu(III) adsorbed onto Cr(III)-based terephthalate MOF (Cr-MIL-101) and Zr(IV)-based Universitet in Oslo MOFs (UiO-66 and UiO-68) and their derivatives. In the Cr(III)- and Zr(IV)-based MOFs, Ln adsorb as inner-sphere complexes at the metal oxo clusters, regardless of whether the organic linkers are decorated with amino groups. Missing linkers result in favorable Ln binding sites at oxo clusters; however, Ln can coordinate to metal sites even with linkers in place. MOF functionalization with phosphonate groups led to Ln chemisorption onto these groups, which out-compete metal cluster sites. Ln form monodentate and bidentate and mononuclear and binuclear surface complexes. We conclude that MOFs for ion-selective Ln capture can be designed by a combination of (1) maximizing metal-lanthanide interactions via shared O atoms at the metal oxo cluster sites, where mixed oxo clusters can lead to ion-selective Ln adsorption, and (2) functionalizing MOFs with Ln-selective groups capable of out-completing the metal oxo cluster sites.

Ion solvation as a predictor of lanthanide adsorption structures and energetics in alumina nanopores

Adsorption reactions at solid-water interfaces define elemental fate and transport and enable contaminant clean-up, water purification, and chemical separations. For nanoparticles and nanopores, nanoconfinement may lead to unexpected and hard-to-predict products and energetics of adsorption, compared to analogous unconfined surfaces. Here we use X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and operando flow microcalorimetry to determine nanoconfinement effects on the energetics and local coordination environment of trivalent lanthanides adsorbed on Al2O3 surfaces. We show that the nanoconfinement effects on adsorption become more pronounced as the hydration free energy, ΔGhydr, of a lanthanide decreases. Neodymium (Nd3+) has the least exothermic ΔGhydr (-3336 kJ·mol-1) and forms mostly outer-sphere complexes on unconfined Al2O3 surfaces but shifts to inner-sphere complexes within the 4 nm Al2O3 pores. Lutetium (Lu3+) has the most exothermic ΔGhydr (-3589 kJ·mol-1) and forms inner-sphere adsorption complexes regardless of whether Al2O3 surfaces are nanoconfined. Importantly, the energetics of adsorption is exothermic in nanopores only, and becomes endothermic with increasing surface coverage. Changes to the energetics and products of adsorption in nanopores are ion-specific, even within chemically similar trivalent lanthanide series, and can be predicted by considering the hydration energies of adsorbing ions.

Norm-Conserving 4f-in-Core Pseudopotentials and Basis Sets Optimized for Trivalent Lanthanides (Ln = Ce-Lu)

We present here a set of scalar-relativistic norm-conserving 4f-in-core pseudopotentials, together with complementary valence-shell Gaussian basis sets, for the lanthanide (Ln) series (Ce-Lu). The Goedecker, Teter, and Hutter (GTH) formalism is adopted with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. The 4f-in-core pseudopotentials are built through attributing 4f-subconfiguration 4fⁿ (n = 1-14) for Ln (Ln = Ce-Lu) into the atomic core region, making it possible to circumvent the difficulty of the description of the open 4fⁿ valence shell. A wide variety of computational benchmarks and tests have been carried out on lanthanide systems including Ln³⁺-containing molecular complexes, aqueous solutions, and bulk solids to validate the accuracy, reliability, and efficiency of the optimized 4f-in-core GTH pseudopotentials and basis sets. The 4f-in-core GTH pseudopotentials successfully replicate the main features of lanthanide structural chemistry and reaction energetics, particularly for nonredox reactions. The chemical bonding features and solvation shells, hydrolysis energetics, acidity constants, and solid-state properties of selected lanthanide systems are also discussed in detail by utilizing these new 4f-in-core GTH pseudopotentials. This work bridges the idea of keeping highly localized 4f electrons in the atomic core and efficient pseudopotential formalism of GTH, thus providing a highly efficient approach for studying lanthanide chemistry in multi-scale modeling of constituent-wise and structurally complicated systems, including electronic structures of the condensed phase and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations.

Water Defect Stabilizes the Bi3+ Lone-Pair Electronic State Leading to an Unusual Aqueous Hydration Structure

The aqueous hydration structure of the Bi³⁺ ion is probed using a combination of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) simulations of ion-water clusters and condensed-phase solutions. Anomalous features in the EXAFS spectra are found to be associated with a highly asymmetric first-solvent water shell. The aqueous chemistry and structure of the Bi³⁺ ion are dramatically controlled by the water stabilization of a lone-pair electronic state involving the mixed 6s and 6p orbitals. This leads to a distinct multimodal distribution of water molecules in the first shell that are separated by about 0.2 Å. The lone-pair structure is stabilized by a collective response of multiple waters that are localized near the lone-pair anti-bonding site. The findings indicate that the lone-pair stereochemistry of aqueous Bi³⁺ ions plays a major role in the binding of water and ligands in aqueous solutions.

The solution structures and relative stability constants of lanthanide-EDTA complexes predicted from computation

Ligand selectivity to specific lanthanide (Ln) ions is key to the separation of rare earth elements from each other. Ligand selectivity can be quantified with relative stability constants (measured experimentally) or relative binding energies (calculated computationally). The relative stability constants of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) with La3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, and Lu3+ were predicted from relative binding energies, which were quantified using electronic structure calculations with relativistic effects and based on the molecular structures of Ln-EDTA complexes in solution from density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations. The protonation state of an EDTA amine group was varied to study pH ∼7 and ∼11 conditions. Further, simulations at 25 °C and 90 °C were performed to elucidate how structures of Ln-EDTA complexes varying with temperature are related to complex stabilities at different pH conditions. Relative stability trends are predicted from computation for varying Ln3+ ions (La, Eu, Gd, Lu) with a single ligand (EDTA at pH ∼11), as well as for a single Ln3+ ion (La) with varying ligands (EDTA at pH ∼7 and ∼11). Changing the protonation state of an EDTA amine site significantly changes the solution structure of the Ln-EDTA complex resulting in a reduction of the complex stability. Increased Ln-ligand complex stability is correlated to reduced structural variations in solution upon an increase in temperature.
