Multinuclear Lanthanide-Implanted Tetrameric Dawson-Type Phosphotungstates with Switchable Luminescence Behaviors Induced by Fast Photochromism

Cylindrical HPIII-SbIII-Templated Five-Layer Polyoxotungstate with Conspicuous Photochromism Triggered by UV or Visible Light

The heteroanion (HA) component plays an important role in the templating of heteropolyoxometalate (HPA) structures, but polyoxometalates (POMs) formed from two different templates are rarely reported. Herein, we present a five-layer POM [H2N(CH3)2]14{[(HPO3)4W6O10][HPSbW15O54]2}·16H2O (1) prepared by two kinds of different HA templates. The multilayer heteropolyanion {[(HPO3)4W6O10][HPSbW15O54]2}14- in 1 consists of two trivacant diheteroatom-templated ([HPO3]2- and [SbO3]3-) [HPSbW15O54]11- subunits linked by one unusual [(HPO3)4W6O10]8+ subcluster via twelve corner-sharing oxygen atoms. Compound 1 was systematically characterized by IR, UV, PXRD, TGA, XPS, and Raman spectra. Compound 1 exhibits good photochromism under UV irradiation with a half-life (t1/2) of 42.5 s, and it also exhibits noteworthy photochromism under visible light irradiation with a half-life (t1/2) of 157.2 s. The possible photochromic mechanism is proposed and verified by the experimental results.

Tetra-Ln3+-Implanted Tellurotungstates Covalently Modified by dl-Malic Acid: Proton Conduction and Photochromic Properties

Three unique dl-malic acid covalently modified tetra-Ln3+-implanted tellurotungstates [H2(CH3)2]9NaH9[Ln4(H2O)14W6O13(OH)5(Mal)2(B-α-TeW9O33)4]·48H2O [Ln = La3+ (1), Ce3+ (2), Pr3+ (3); H3Mal = dl-malic acid] were fabricated by reacting Na2TeO3, Na2WO4·2H2O, Mal, and LnCl3·6H2O with dimethylamine hydrochloride in an aqueous solution. The most prominent architectural feature of these compounds is the covalent connection mode of an organic ligand and a polyoxometallate backbone, which is relatively rare in the realm of polyoxotungstates. The tetrameric polyanion can be deemed as four [TeW9O33]8- fragments fused together via an intriguing hexanuclearity [W6O13(OH)5(Mal)2Ln4(H2O)14]13+ cluster. Impedance measurements manifest that all three complexes display splendid proton conduction properties, with an exceptional conductivity for 2 up to 2.48 × 10-2 S·cm-1 under 85 °C and 95% relative humidity. Moreover, compounds 1 and 3 exhibited fast reversible photochromic properties with allochroic half-life periods t1/2 of 1.046 and 0.544 min, respectively.

Recent advances in lanthanide-based POMs for photoluminescent applications

Since the first formation of the famous "Peacock-Weakley" anions [Ln(W5O18)2]8/9-, a steady stream of breakthroughs have been made in the chemistry of multitalented lanthanide (Ln)-based polyoxometalates (POMs) for their potentially desirable properties. In particular, LnIII ions are generally recognised as the "vitamins of the modern industry" owing to their ability to cover a wide emission range, endowing Ln-based POMs with great potential for versatile and diverse luminescence-related applications. In this frontier, we discuss the synthesis strategies and intramolecular energy transfer in Ln-based POM derivatives. Then, the progressive improvements achieved with Ln-based POMs in photoluminescence applications are highlighted, focusing mainly on luminescent and fluorescent probes. Finally, the challenges for Ln-based POM materials for photoluminescence applications are discussed.

Two Tetra-Nuclear Ln-Substituted Prazine Dicarboxylic Acid-Functionalized Selenotungstates with Catalytic Oxidation of Thioether Properties

Two two-dimensional Ln-substituted prazine dicarboxylic acid-functionalized selenotungstates Na3H9[(H2N(CH3)2]2{(Se4W27O100)[Ln4(H2O)8(Hpzdc)2(pzdc)]}·26H2O [Ln = Nd (1) and Ce (2)]; H2pzdc = 2,3-pyrazine dicarboxylic acid) have been synthesized by one-pot self-assembly strategy, in which the basic polyanion [Se4W27O100]22-was composed of two [SeW8O31]10- fragments, a [SeW9O33]8- segment and an intriguing {SeO} group, simultaneously tetra-nuclear Ln3+ ions with H2pzdc pendants were embedded. Compounds 1 and 2 showed excellent catalytic oxidation of thioether properties within a short time (20 min) with high 100% conversion and 98.9% selectivity. In addition, the pioneering Ln-substituted selenotungstates were used as catalysts to degrade sulfur mustard simulant 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide at room temperature with 99% conversion and 100% selectivity. The chemical kinetic experiment studies revealed that the catalytic reaction was in compliance with the first-order reaction, and the kinetic half-life (t1/2) values were 3.814 and 3.849 min, respectively.

A d-Methionine-Bonded Nanosized Heteropolyoxotungstate with Photocoloration

A d-methionine-bonded nanosized arsenotungstate, Ba9K10H6[{As2W19O67(H2O)}2{AsW9O33}2{W3O6(H2O)(d-Met)}2{W2O4(OH)(d-Met)}]·60H2O [1; d-Met = d-methionine (C5H11NO2S)], is constructed without the use of lanthanide ions. The polyanion of 1 contains two {As2W19O67(H2O)}14- building blocks and two {B-β-AsW9O33}9- subunits, integrated together with a {W2O4(OH)(d-Met)}2+ and two {W3O6(H2O)(d-Met)}5+ subclusters. Interestingly, 1 displays a highly reversible photocoloration property with a half-life (t1/2) time measured as about 0.793 min.

[α-AsW9O33]9- bridged hexagonal clusters of Ln(III) showing field induced SMM behavior: experimental and theoretical insight

Polyoxometalates (POM), as inorganic polydentate oxygen donors, provide binding opportunities for oxophilic lanthanide metal centers to construct novel Ln-substituted POM materials with exciting structures and attractive properties. Herein, we have reported four arsenotungstate [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- based lanthanide-containing polyoxometalates [Cs_xK_36-x{Ln₆(H₂O)₁₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₆}]·yH₂O (Ln = Er (1), Gd (2), Ho (3), and Tb (4)), which are synthesized in an alkaline medium. Complexes 1-3 are the dimeric structures of [Ln₃(H₂O)₆(α-AsW₉O₃₃)₃]^18- polyanions, whereas complex 4 is a hexamer of the polyanion [Tb (H₂O)₂(α-AsW₉O₃₃)]^6- as a building unit. In all the complexes, [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- units are staggered up and down and give rise to the chair conformation, where one [α-AsW₉O₃₃]^9- unit bridges two Ln(III) centers through four μ₂-oxygen and two terminal oxygen atoms, resulting in the hexagonal arrangement of lanthanides. The dynamic magnetic measurement indicates that only complex 1 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with an applied dc field (1500 Oe). To gain insight into the slow relaxation of magnetization in complex 1, the ligand-field parameters and the splitting of the ground-state multiplet of the Er(III) ions have been estimated. The ab initio calculation results confirm that the ground state wave function of these molecules (1, 3, and 4) is mainly composed of a mixture of m_J states, and the non-axial crystal field (CF) terms are more predominant than the axial CF term. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 reveal that the photoexcitation O → M ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) of arsenotungstate fragments is effectively quenched due to the spatial coordination environment around the Ln(III) ion.

Tetra-Nuclear Cluster-Based Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks as White Phosphor, Information Encryption, Self-Calibrating Thermometers, and Fe2+ Sensors

The application of one kind of metal-organic framework (MOF) material used in multiple fields is one of the most interesting research topics. In this work, four new tetra-nuclear cluster-based lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (LnMOFs) [Ln₂(BTDB)₃(DMA)(phen)]_n (Ln = Tb TbMOF, Eu EuMOF, Gd GdMOF, Tb_1.830Eu_0.170 Tb,EuMOF, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4',4″-dicarboxytriphenylamine = H₂BTDB, 1,10-phenanthroline = phen) are obtained based on the ligand of H₂BTDB that is synthesized in our laboratory, and the precise single-crystal structure of H₂BTDB is obtained for the first time. The white phosphor was obtained by facilely hybridizing two components of the orange-yellow emission phosphor of Tb,EuMOF and the blue luminescence material of triphenylamine according to the trichromatic theory. At the same time, TbMOF, EuMOF, Tb,EuMOF, and the white phosphor can be used for information encryption, demonstrating their potential application in the field of anti-counterfeiting. Tb,EuMOF is also a multi-mode and self-calibrating thermometer within a broad temperature range of 110-300 K. Further studies show that EuMOF is a rapid response sensor for Fe²⁺, with a very low limit of detection of 2.0 nM, which is much lower than the national standards for Fe²⁺ (GB 5749-2005, 5.357 μM). It can achieve strong anti-interference detection of Fe²⁺ in actual samples of tap water and lake water. In addition, EuMOF can also be made into an easy-to-use sensing device of test paper for real-time and visual sensing of Fe²⁺.

Visual and Real-Time Monitoring of Cd2+ in Water, Rice, and Rice Soil with Test Paper Based on [2 + 2] Lanthanide Clusters

Cadmium ions (Cd²⁺) are highly toxic to animal and human health, especially through the drinking of Cd²⁺-contaminated water and eating Cd²⁺-contaminated rice. Therefore, accurate detection of Cd²⁺ in water, rice, and rice soil is urgent. In this work, two [2 + 2] lanthanide clusters of Tb₂Tb₂ and Eu₂Eu₂ were synthesized and characterized in detail. Interestingly, Tb2Tb2 is a rapid sensor for Cd²⁺ through luminescence "turn-off". Further studies show that Tb2Tb2 is a highly sensitive and selective sensor toward Cd²⁺ in water, rice supernatants, and rice soil supernatants, with a very short response time of 20 s. The limit of detection (LOD) in the above three real samples is as low as 0.0112, 1.1240, and 0.1124 ppb, respectively, which is lower than the national standards for food safety in China (GB 2762-2022). More interestingly, a portable sensing device of test paper based on Tb2Tb2 is developed with a facile method, which shows visible, highly sensitive, and selective sensing toward Cd²⁺ in real samples of water, rice supernatants, and rice soil supernatants. Tb2Tb2 and its sensing device of test paper are an on-site analysis sensor for potentially non-expert users, especially for people in remote rural areas.

Hydroxyl radical-dominated selective oxidation of ethylbenzene over a photoactive polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework

Realizing photo-promoted saturated C-H functionalization is a significant challenge. [Cu^I₃(H₂O)₆(TPT)₂][H₂BW₁₂O₄₀]·28H₂O was assembled by combining electron reservoir [BW₁₂O₄₀]^5- with photosensitizer TPT. The continuous coordination bonds and π-π stacking interactions facilitate hole-electron separation and electron transfer, and allow it to exhibit high photocatalytic activity toward ethylbenzene oxidation with O₂/H₂O as oxidants.

Lamellar Nanocomposite Based on a 1D Crayfish-like CeIII-Substituted Phospho(III)tungstate Semiconductor and Polyaniline Used as a High-Performance Humidity Sensing Device

In order to meet people's demand for intelligent management of daily life and health, manufacturing and developing humidity monitoring equipment with convenience, high sensitivity, easy miniaturization, and low cost is particularly important in the era of rapid development of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Polyaniline (PANI) is an attractive humidity sensing material due to its designable functional properties. However, PANI modified polyoxometalates (POMs) for humidity sensing are still rare. As a proof of concept, a novel moisture sensing composite material was obtained based on PANI and a novel 1D rare-earth-substituted phospho(III)tungstate [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₉Na₃H₆[Ce₂(H₂O)₃W₅O₁₃(C₂O₄)][HP^IIIW₉O₃₃]₂[(HP^III)₂W₁₅O₅₄]·42H₂O (1). Notably, the anion structure of 1 contains trivacant Keggin-type [B-α-HP^IIIW₉O₃₃]^8- and Dawson-like [(HP^III)₂W₁₅O₅₄]^10- subunits linked by a heterometallic [Ce₂(H₂O)₃W₅O₃₂(C₂O₄)]^30- cluster. Furthermore, the 1/PANI composite shows a typical semiconductive characteristic with a "band-like" conductive mechanism. The fabricated 1/PANI-based humidity sensing device exhibits a broad sensing range (11∼97% relative humidity), fast response/recovery time (3.45 s/3.24 s), good repeatability, and long-term stability (over 3 months). Additionally, the possible sensing mechanism is proposed. This work offers an enormous possibility for the design of high-performance humidity sensing materials through POM material chemistry.

dl-Serine Covalently Ornamented and Ln3+-Incorporated Arsenotungstates with Fast-Responsive Photochromic and Photoinduced Luminescent Switchable Behaviors

Three isostructural dl-serine covalently functionalized and multinuclear lanthanide (Ln³⁺)-embedded arsenotungstates, K₂[{As₄W₄₄O₁₃₇(OH)₁₈(H₂O)₂(dl-Ser)₂}{Ln₂(H₂O)₄(dl-Ser)}₂{Ln(H₂O)₇}₂]·70H₂O (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), and Gd (3); dl-Ser = C₃H₇NO₃), were prepared, where the centrosymmetric [{As₄W₄₄O₁₃₇(OH)₁₈(H₂O)₂(dl-Ser)₂}{Ln₂(H₂O)₄(dl-Ser)}₂]^8- polyanion consists of two {As₂W₁₉O₅₉(OH)₈(H₂O)}^6- fragments, integrated with a two-dl-serine-ornamented [W₆O₂₃(OH)₂(dl-Ser)₂{Ln₂(H₂O)₄}₂]^8- segment. In addition, the photochromic transformation of solid-state compounds 1-3 was observed from colorless to blue after a UV illumination of 4 min, and the decay process lasted as long as ∼20 h in the dark. The coloration kinetic half-life (t_1/2) values of compounds 1, 2, and 3 were calculated to be 0.597, 0.920, and 0.723 min, respectively. Furthermore, the luminescent properties and energy migration from arsenotungstates and organic chromophores to Sm³⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions in 1 and 2 have been intensively investigated. Further analysis manifests that 1 possesses an effective luminescent switchable behavior, triggered by its fast-responsive photochromism effect.

Photochromism and photoswitchable luminescence in a Zn7 cluster-based metal-organic framework with an organic guest

Photochromic materials coupled with photoswitchable luminescence functionalities are of particular interest due to their potential applications in switches and optical memory devices. However, the construction of such materials, especially those with two-color emission states, is still challenging. In this context, a rare Zn₇ cluster-based host-guest MOF material, (bbmp)[Zn₇(IPA)₆(OH)₄(H₂O)₂] (1) (H₂IPA = isophthalic acid, bbmp·2I = 4,4'-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl)bis(1-methylpyridin-1-ium) diiodide), was prepared by encapsulating an organic cation into an anionic MOF produced from zinc cations and isophthalic acid ligands, which exhibits reversible naked detectable photochromic properties varying from yellow to green upon UV-Vis light irradiation. The photoactive guest bbmp²⁺ and the short O⋯N⁺ distances between the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate groups and the pyridine ring play a crucial role in the photochromism of this compound. More interestingly, the luminescence color of this cluster-based host-guest material can be reversibly switched from green to blue upon irradiation, exhibiting photoswitchable luminescence properties.
