Surface Plasmon Resonance Boost Electrocatalytic Alcohol Oxidation over Three-Dimensional PdM (M = Au, Ag, Cu) Nanosheet Assemblies

Interfacial Engineering of Porous Pd/M (M = Au, Cu, Mn) Sponge-like Nanocrystals with a Clean Surface for Enhanced Alkaline Electrochemical Oxidation of Ethanol

The interfacial engineering of Pd-based alloys (i.e., PdM with distinct morphologies, compositions, and strain defects) is an efficient way for enhanced catalytic activity; however, it remains a grand challenge to fabricate such alloys in aqueous solutions without heating, organic solvents, and multiple reaction steps. Herein, we present a simple, aqueous-phase, one-step, and ultrafast approach for the interfacial engineering of surfactant-free porous PdM (M = Cu, Au, and Mn) nanocrystals with well-controlled spongy-like morphology and compositions. The electronic interaction in PdM nanocrystals and their effect on the alkaline electrochemical ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) are investigated using XRD, XPS, and electrochemical tests. Notably, integrating M metals into Pd atoms results in upshifting the d-band center of Pd and subsequently modulating the EOR activity and stability substantially. The EOR mass activity (10.78 A/mgPd (6.93 A/mgPdCu)) of PdCu was 1.83, 3.09, 4.51, and 53.90 times higher than those of AuPd (5.90 A/mgPd (3.27 A/mgAuPd)), PdMn (3.48 A/mgPd (3.19 A/mgPdMn)), Pd (2.39 A/mgPd), and Pd/C (0.20 A/mgPd), respectively, besides substantial durability after 1000 cycles. This is due to the porous two-dimensional morphology, a low synergetic effect, higher interfacial interaction, and greater active surface area of PdCu, besides a high Cu content with more oxophilicity that facilitates activation/dissociation of H2O to generate -OH species needed for quick EOR electrocatalysis. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveals better electrolyte/electrode interfacial interaction and lower charge transfer resistance on PdCu. The EOR activity of PdCu porous sponge-like nanocrystals was superior to all previously reported Pd-based alloys for electrochemical EOR. This study indicates that binary Pd-based catalysts with less synergetic effect are preferred for boosting the EOR activity, which could help in manipulating the surface properties of Pd-based alloys to optimize EOR performance.

Photoassisted Strategy to Promote Glycerol Electrooxidation to Lactic Acid Coupled with Hydrogen Production

Electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol (GLY; from a biodiesel byproduct) to lactic acid (LA; the key monomers for polylactic acid; PLA) is considered a sustainable approach for biomass waste upcycling and is coupled with cathodic hydrogen (H₂) production. However, current research still suffer from issues of low current density and low LA selectivity. Herein, we reported a photoassisted electrocatalytic strategy to achieve the selective oxidation of GLY to LA over a gold nanowire (Au NW) catalyst, attaining a high current density of 387 mA cm^-2 at 0.95 V vs RHE, together with a high LA selectivity of 80%, outperforming most of the reported works in the literature. We reveal that the light-assistance strategy plays a dual role, which can both accelerate the reaction rate through the photothermal effect and also promote the adsorption of the middle hydroxyl of GLY over Au NWs to realize the selective oxidation of GLY to LA. As a proof-of-concept, we realized the direct conversion of crude GLY that was extracted from cooking oil to attain LA and coupled it with H₂ production using the developed photoassisted electrooxidation process, revealing the potential of this strategy in practical applications.

Photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol on trimetallic PdAgCu nanospheres enhanced by surface plasmon resonance

The notable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of some metals has been applied to improve the efficiency of alcohol oxidation reactions, whereas the comprehensive investigation of Cu-assisted photoelectrocatalysis remains challenging. We herein successfully prepared trimetallic PdAgCu nanospheres (NSs) with abundant surface bulges for the advanced ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and compared them with bimetallic PdAg NSs to investigate the performance enhancement mechanism. Impressively, the as-optimized PdAgCu NSs exhibited superb mass activity and electrochemical stability. Moreover, under visible light illumination, the mass activity of PdAgCu NSs increased to 1.62 times compared to that in the dark, and in contrast, the mass activity of PdAg NSs only increased to 1.48 times that in the dark. A mechanistic study indicated that the incorporation of Cu not only strengthens the whole SPR effect of PdAgCu NSs but also further modifies the electronic structure of Pd. This work highlighted that the incorporation of Cu into PdAg NSs further enhanced the photoelectrocatalytic performance and increased noble metal atom utilization, which may provide guidance to fabricate novel and promising nanocatalysts in the field of photoelectrocatalysis.

Ultrathin PdCu Nanosheet as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Formate Oxidation Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The development of robust nonplatinum electrocatalysts to enhance the performance of formate oxidation reaction (FOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the key issues for the commercialization of direct formate fuel cells (DFFCs), but still challenging. Herein, a structurally controlled 3D flower-like PdCu nanosheet (NS) catalyst is synthesized by a method of oil bath reduction under mild conditions as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for DFFCs. Under the dual tuning on the composition and intermetallic phase, the PdCu nanosheet catalyst exhibits 8.67 times higher mass activity for anodic formate oxidation reaction than the commercial Pd/C. For the cathodic ORR, a positive shift half-wave potential is obtained for PdCu nanosheets exceeding Pt/C. Moreover, after a long-term stability test, the current density of the PdCu nanosheet catalyst for FOR and ORR can be well maintained with the least activity decay. When the PdCu NSs are used as optimized anode and cathode electrodes for DFFCs enable a peak power density as high as 53 mW cm^-2 at room temperature, which is about 1.3 times higher than that of the commercial Pd/C and Pt/C as anode and cathode electrodes. This work provides a potential strategy to improve the catalytic performance of non-Pt-based nanocatalysts.

Pd-Based Metallenes for Fuel Cell Reactions

Pd-based metallenes, atomically thin layers composed primarily of under-coordinated Pd atoms, have emerged as the newest members in the family of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Moreover, the unique physiochemical properties, high intrinsic activity associated with metallenes coupled with the ease of applying chemical modifications result in great potential in catalyst engineering for fuel cell reactions. Especially in recent years, interest in Pd-based metallenes is growing, as evidenced by surge in available literatures. Herein, we have reviewed the recent findings achieved in Pd-based metallenes in fuel cells by highlighting the technologies available for deriving metallenes and manifesting the modification strategies for designing them to better suit the application demand. Moreover, we also discuss the perspective insights of Pd-based metallenes for fuel cells regarding the surfactant-free synthesis method, strain engineering, constructing high-entropy alloy, and so on.

Highly sensitive competitive electrochemiluminescence immunosensor based on ABEI-H2O2 system with cobalt hydroxide nanosheets and bimetal PdAg as co-enhancer for detection of florfenicol

A competitive electrochemiluminescence immunoassay was established based on the isoluminol-H₂O₂ (ABEI-H₂O₂) system catalyzed by cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)₂) to detect florfenicol residues in food. First , ultra-thin two-dimensional Co(OH)₂ nanosheets were used as the catalyst of ABEI-H₂O₂ system, and excellent catalytic effects were acquired by catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with cobalt ions. Then, bimetal PdAg (Pd/Ag) alloy nanoparticles were used as a bridge to connect ABEI and antibody due to their good biocompatibility; Pd/Ag alloy nanoparticles also had a catalytic effect to further amplify the ECL signal in the system due to the synergistic catalytic effect of the bimetal. A competitive immunoassay strategy was used to detect florfenicol, where the florfenicol in the sample will compete with the antibody for the limited binding sites on the coating antigen. The ECL immunosensor for florfenicol detection shows high sensitivity, with a linear range from 10^-4  to 10² ng mL^-1, and a detection limit of 3.1 × 10^-5 ng mL^-1, where the scan potential was varied from 0 to 0.6 V vs Ag/AgCl . This work was the first to use Co(OH)₂ nanosheets and bimetal PdAg catalytic signal amplification methods to design the sensor, which provides a novel, convenient and reliable strategy for ultra-sensitive detection of florfenicol, and other biological small molecules. A novel ECL immunosensor based on ABEI-H₂O₂₂.

Two-dimensional copper based colloidal nanocrystals: synthesis and applications

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor nanocrystals display unconventional physical and opto-electronic properties due to their ultrathin and unique electronic structures. Since the success of Cd-based photoemissive nanocrystals, the development of sustainable and low-cost nanocrystals with enhanced electronic and physical properties has become a central research theme. In this context, copper-based semiconductor 2D nanocrystals, the cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative, exhibit unique plasmonic resonance, transport properties, and high ionic conductivity beneficial for sensing, energy storage, conversion, and catalytic applications. This review summarizes recent progress in the colloidal synthesis, growth mechanisms, properties, and applications of 2D copper-based nanostructures with tunable compositions, dimensions, and crystal phases. We highlight the growth mechanisms concerning their shape evolution in two dimensions. We analyse the effectiveness of cation exchange as a tool to synthesize multinary nanocrystals. Based on the preparation of Cu-based chalcogenide and non-chalcogenide compositions, we discuss synthesis control achieved via colloidal approaches to allow dimension tunability, phase engineering, and plasmonic and thermoelectric property optimization. Furthermore, their potential in various applications of catalysis, energy storage, and sensing is reviewed. Finally, we address the current challenges associated with 2D Cu-based nanocrystal development and provide an outlook pertaining to unexplored research areas.
