Flexible Microporous Copper(II) Metal-Organic Framework toward the Storage and Separation of C1-C3 Hydrocarbons in Natural Gas

Microporous Fluorinated MOF with Multiple Adsorption Sites for Efficient Recovery of C2H6 and C3H8 from Natural Gas

Purifying C2H6/C3H8 from a ternary natural gas mixture through adsorption separation is an important but challenging process in the petrochemical industry. To address this challenge, the industry is exploring effective strategies for designing high-performance adsorbents. In this study, we present two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), DMOF-TF and DMOF-(CF3)2, which have fluorinated pores obtained by substituting linker ligands in the host material. This pore engineering strategy not only provides suitable pore confinement but also enhances the adsorption capacities for C2H6/C3H8 by providing additional binding sites. Theoretical calculations and transient breakthrough experiments show that the introduction of F atoms not only improves the efficiency of natural gas separation but also provides multiple adsorption sites for C2H6/C3H8-framework interactions.

Halogen-modified metal-organic frameworks for efficient separation of alkane from natural gas

As a rich green energy source, natural gas is widely used in many fields such as the chemical industry, automobile energy, and daily life. However, it is very challenging to separate and recover C2H6 and C3H8 from natural gas. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an emerging type of multi-pore porous materials show huge potential in gas adsorption separation. Herein, we report pillar-layered MOFs, Ni (BDC)(DABCO)0.5 (DMOF-X), modified by halogen atoms (F, Cl, Br), and investigate their CH4/C2H6/C3H8 separation performance. The experimental results show that DMOF-Cl exhibited a extremely high adsorption capacity for C3H8 and C2H6. Under the conditions of 298 K and 100 kPa, the adsorption capacities for C3H8 and C2H6 on DMOF-Cl are as high as 6.23 and 4.94 mmol g-1, which are superior to the values for most of the porous materials that have been reported. In addition, DMOF-Cl also shows high C3H8/CH4 (5: 85, V/V) and C2H6/CH4 (10: 85, V/V) separation selectivities, with values of 130.9 and 12.5, respectively. Finally, DMOF-Cl also demonstrated great potential as an adsorbent for separating C3H8/C2H6/CH4.

A sustainable avenue for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans using a Cu-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) as a reusable heterogeneous catalyst

A heterogeneous copper-catalyzed A3 coupling reaction of aldehydes, amines, and alkynes for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans has been developed. Here, the modified metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr)-SB-Cu complex was chosen as the heterogeneous copper catalyst and prepared via post-synthetic modification of amino-functionalized MIL-101(Cr). The structure, morphology, thermal stability, and copper content of the catalyst were determined by FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, TGA, XPS, and ICP-OES. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity for the aforementioned reactions under solvent-free reaction conditions. High yields, low catalyst loading, easy catalyst recovery and reusability with not much shrink in catalytic activity, and a good yield of 82% in gram-scale synthesis are some of the benefits of this protocol that drove it towards sustainability.

Particle size-dependent flexibility in DUT-8(Cu) pillared layer metal-organic framework

The nature of metal in the isomorphous flexible metal-organic frameworks is often reported to influence flexibility and responsivity. A prominent example of such behaviour is the DUT-8(M) family ([M₂(2,6-ndc)₂(dabco)]_n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane), where the isostructural compounds with Ni, Zn, Co, and Cu in the paddle wheel cluster are known. The macro-sized crystals of Ni, Co, and Zn based compounds transform to the closed pore (cp) phase under desolvation and show typical gate opening behaviour upon adsorption. The choice of metal, in this case, allows the adjustment of switching kinetics, selectivity in adsorption, and gate-opening pressures. The submicron-sized crystals of of Ni, Co, and Zn based compounds remain in the open pore (op) phase after desolvation. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the presence of Cu in the paddle wheel leads to fundamentally different flexible behaviour. The DUT-8(Cu) desolvation does not lead to the formation of the cp phase, independent of the particle size regime. However, according to in situ powder diffraction analysis, the desolvated, macro-sized crystals of DUT-8(Cu)_op show breathing upon adsorption of CO₂ at 195 K. The submicron-sized particles show rigid, nonresponsive behaviour.

MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2 for Efficient Separation of CH4 and C3H8 from Simulated Natural Gas

Adsorptive separation based on porous solid adsorbents has emerged as an excellent effective alternative to energy-intensive conventional separation methods in a low energy cost and high working capacity manner. However, there are few stable mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient purification of methane from other light hydrocarbons in natural gas. Herein, we report a series of stable mesoporous MOFs, MIL-101-Cr/Fe/Fe-NH2, for efficient separation of CH4 and C3H8 from a ternary mixture CH4/C2H6/C3H8. Experimental results show that all three MOFs possess excellent thermal, acid/basic, and hydrothermal stability. Single-component adsorption suggested that they have high C3H8 adsorption capacity and commendable selectivity for C3H8 and C2H6 over CH4. Transient breakthrough experiments further certified the ability of direct separation of CH4 from simulated natural gas and indirect recovery of C3H8 from the packing column. Theoretical calculations illustrated that the van der Waals force proportional to the molecular weight is the key factor and that the structural integrity and defect can impact separation performances.

Pore-Space Partition through an Embedding Metal-Carboxylate Chain-Induced Topology Upgrade Strategy for the Separation of Acetylene/Ethylene

Ethylene (C₂H₄) is one of the most significant substances in the petrochemical industry; however, the capture of acetylene (C₂H₂) in about 1% from C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixtures is a difficult task because of the similarity of their physical properties. With the aggravation of the energy crisis, using metal-organic framework (MOF) materials to purify C₂H₄ through adsorptive separation is a promising way to save energy and reduce emission. Pore-space partition (PSP) with the aim of enhancing the density of the binding sites and the strength of the host-guest interactions is an effective means to promote a solution for the challenging gas separation problems. Herein, we report a new embedding metal-carboxylate chain-induced topology upgrade strategy within a MOF to realize PSP and separation of C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixtures. As a proof of concept, we construct a microporous MOF (NUM-12) utilizing the in situ insertion of cobalt terephthalic chains into a pretargeted ant-type framework during synthesis. Because of the attainment of an elaborately tuned aperture size and a specific pore environment through this strategy, NUM-12a (activated NUM-12) not only has a remarkable gas sorption capacity and strong interactions for C₂H₂ but also possesses an excellent purification performance for C₂H₂/C₂H₄ mixtures. Both experiments and simulation calculations clearly reveal that NUM-12 is a promising candidate for the separation of C₂H₂/C₂H₄, proving the feasibility of this new strategy for developing newly fashioned MOFs with adjustable structure and performance.
