Dirhodium-Based Supramolecular Framework Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

Photo- and Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by Heteroleptic Dirhodium(II,II) Complexes: Role of the Bridging and Diimine Ligands

A series of heteroleptic Rh2(II,II) complexes, cis-[Rh2(μ-DPhF)2(μ-bncn)2]2+ (1; bncn = benzo[c]cinnoline), cis-[Rh2(μ-DPhF)(μ-OAc)(μ-bncn)2]2+ (2), and cis-[Rh2(μ-OAc)2(μ-bncn)2]2+ (3), is presented, and the excited state and redox properties of each complex was characterized for the photo- and electrocatalytic production of H2. The oxidation potentials shift anodically from 1 to 3, consistent with a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with significant metal-ligand mixing, Rh2(δ*)/DPhF(π/nb). In contrast, modest differences in the first two bncn-localized reversible reduction potentials were observed in 1 - 3. The lowest energy metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (1ML-LCT) transition, Rh2(δ*)/DPhF(π/nb) → bncn(π*), shifts from 633 nm in 1 to 553 nm in 2, and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) Rh2(π*) → bncn(π*) absorption in 3 appears at 462 nm in CH3CN. Although the 3ML-LCT excited state of 2 is shorter lived than that of 1, 2.7 ns as compared to 19 ns, respectively, photocatalytic hydrogen generation is observed for the former upon 595 nm irradiation in the presence of 0.1 M TsOH (p-tolylsulfonic acid) and 0.1 M BNAH (1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide). The temperature dependence of the 3ML-LCT lifetimes of 1 and 2 shows the presence of a thermally accessible deactivating state. In addition, the singly reduced intermediate, [2]-, is photoactive and able to generate hydrogen in the presence of TsOH. Importantly, the electrocatalytic currents generated by equimolar concentrations of 1 - 3 in CH3CN are nearly identical, consistent with a mechanism of catalysis that is localized on the bncn ligand and does not require a Rh-H hydride intermediate. This finding can be used to develop earth-abundant first-row transition metal complexes for photo- and electrocatalytic H2 production.

Iron-Complex-Based Supramolecular Framework Catalyst for Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction

Molecule-based heterogeneous photocatalysts without noble metals are one of the most attractive systems for visible-light-driven CO₂ reduction. However, reports on this class of photocatalysts are still limited, and their activities are quite low compared to those containing noble metals. Herein, we report an iron-complex-based heterogeneous photocatalyst for CO₂ reduction with high activity. The key to our success is the use of a supramolecular framework composed of iron porphyrin complexes bearing pyrene moieties at meso positions. The catalyst exhibited high activity for CO₂ reduction under visible-light irradiation (29100 μmol g^-1 h^-1 for CO production, selectivity 99.9%), which is the highest among relevant systems. The performance of this catalyst is also excellent in terms of apparent quantum yield for CO production (0.298% at 400 nm) and stability (up to 96 h). This study provides a facile strategy to create a highly active, selective, and stable photocatalyst for CO₂ reduction without utilizing noble metals.

X-H Bond Insertion Promoted by Heterogeneous Dirhodium Metal-Organic Cage with Alkynes as Safe Carbene Precursors

A facile and efficient methodology for the generation of the C-X (X = Si, B) bond through a carbene insertion process was demonstrated using a dirhodium metal-organic cage, MOC-Rh-1, as a heterogeneous catalyst. A series of functionalized alkynes were utilized as safe carbene precursors to furnish Si-H and B-H insertion products in moderate to excellent yields. These reactions featured a high atom-economy, a broad substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the as-prepared MOC-Rh-1 catalyst was recovered easily from the reaction system by simple centrifugation and reused for ten runs without a significant loss in activity, which made good use of the valuable precious metal rhodium.

8-[4-(2-Hydroxypropane-2-yl)phenyl]-1,3,4,4,5,7-hexamethyl-4-boron-3a,4a-diaza-S-indacene

During recent years, the BODIPY core became a popular scaffold for designing photoremovable protecting groups (PPG). In this paper, we report the synthesis of a new molecule—8-[4-(2-hydroxypropane-2-yl)phenyl]-1,3,4,4,5,7-hexamethyl-4-boron-3a,4a-diaza-S-indacene—by the treatment of meso-(4-CO2Me-phenyl)-BODIPY with excess of MeMgI. The product was characterized by 1H, 13C NMR and HRMS. The combination of BODIPY core with tertiary benzilyc alcohol might be promising for utilizing this molecule as visible light removable PPG.
