Just Add the Gold: Aggregation-Induced-Emission Properties of Alkynylphosphinegold(I) Complexes Functionalized with Phenylene-Terpyridine Subunits

Dynamic Motions of Ligands around the Metal Centers Afford a Fidget Spinner-Type AIE Luminogen

A new type of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogen containing a dimeric metal fragment and two or three phthalazine ligands is described, which shows dynamic motions of ligands around the metal centers in solution. Based on the variable-temperature and EXSY NMR spectroscopy data, X-ray crystallography structures, and computational results, three different pathways (i.e., reversible exchange with haptotropic shifts, circulation of ligands around the dimeric metal fragment, and walking on the spot of ligands on the metal centers) were considered for this dynamic behavior. Restriction of these dynamic processes in the aggregate forms of the compounds (in H2O/CH3CN solvent mixtures) contributes to their AIE. DFT calculations and NMR analysis showed that bright excited states for these molecules are not localized on isolated molecules, and the emission of them stemmed from π-dimers or π-oligomers. The morphologies and the mode of associations in the solvent mixtures were determined by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and concentration-dependent NMR spectroscopy. The computational results showed the presence of a conical intersection (CI) between the S0 and S1 excited state, which provides an accessible pathway for nonradiative decay in these systems.

Near-white light emission from single crystals of cationic dinuclear gold(I) complexes with bridged diphosphine ligands

Three cationic dinuclear Au(I) complexes containing acetonitrile (AN) as an ancillary ligand were synthesized: [μ-L_Me(AuAN)₂]·2BF₄ (1), [μ-L_Et(AuAN)₂]·2BF₄ (2), and [μ-L_iPr(AuAN)₂]·2BF₄ (3) (L_Me = {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, L_Et = {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and L_iPr = {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}). The unique structures of complexes 1-3 with two P-Au(I)-AN rods bridged by rigid diphosphine ligands were determined through X-ray analysis. The Au(I)-Au(I) distances observed for complexes 1-3 were as short as 2.9804-3.0457 Å, indicating an aurophilic interaction between two Au(I) atoms. Unlike complexes 2 and 3, complex 1 incorporated CH₂Cl₂ into the crystals as crystalline solvent molecules. Luminescence studies in the crystalline state revealed that complexes 1 and 2 mainly exhibited bluish-purple phosphorescence (PH) at 293 K: the former had a PH peak wavelength at 415 nm with the photoluminescence quantum yield Φ_PL = 0.12, and the latter at 430 nm with Φ_PL = 0.13. Meanwhile, complex 3 displayed near-white PH, that is dual PH with two PH bands centered at 425 and 580 nm with Φ_PL = 0.44. The PH spectra and lifetimes of complexes 2 and 3 were measured in the temperature range of 77-293 K. The two PH bands observed for complex 3 were suggested to originate from the two emissive excited triplet states, which were in thermal equilibrium. From theoretical calculations, the dual PH observed for complex 3 is explained to occur from the two excited triplet states, T_1H and T_1L: the former exhibits a high-energy PH band (bluish-purple) and the latter exhibits a low-energy PH band (orange). The T_1H state is considered ³ILCT with a structure similar to that of the S₀-optimized structure. Conversely, the T_1L state is assumed to be a ³MLCT with a T₁-optimized structure, which has a short Au(I)-Au(I) bond and two bent rods (Au-AN). The thermal equilibrium between the two excited states is discussed based on computational calculations and photophysical data in the temperature range of 77-293 K. With regard to the crystal of complex 1, we were unable to precisely measure the temperature-dependent emission spectra and lifetimes, particularly at low temperatures, because the cooled crystals became irreversibly turbid over time.

Fluorescence vs. Phosphorescence: Which Scenario Is Preferable in Au(I) Complexes with Benzothiadiazoles?

The photoluminescence of Au(I) complexes is generally characterized by long radiative lifetimes owing to the large spin-orbital coupling constant of the Au(I) ion. Herein, we report three brightly emissive Au(I) coordination compounds, 1, 2a, and 2b, that reveal unexpectedly short emission lifetimes of 10-20 ns. Polymorphs 2a and 2b exclusively exhibit fluorescence, which is quite rare for Au(I) compounds, while compound 1 reveals fluorescence as the major radiative pathway, and a minor contribution of a microsecond-scale component. The fluorescent behaviour for 1-2 is rationalized by means of quantum chemical (TD)-DFT calculations, which reveal the following: (1) S₀-S₁ and S₀-T₁ transitions mainly exhibit an intraligand nature. (2) The calculated spin-orbital coupling (SOC) between the states is small, which is a consequence of overall small metal contribution to the frontier orbitals. (3) The T₁ state features much lower energy than the S₁ state (by ca. 7000 cm^-1), which hinders the SOC between the states. Thus, the S₁ state decays in the form of fluorescence, rather than couples with T₁. In the specific case of complex 1, the potential energy surfaces for the S₁ and T₂ states intersect, while the vibrationally resolved S₁-S₀ and T₂-S₀ calculated radiative transitions show substantial overlap. Thus, the microsecond-scale component for complex 1 can stem from the coupling between the S₁ and T₂ states.

Dinuclear gold(I) Complexes with Bidentate NHC Ligands as Precursors for Alkynyl Complexes via Mechanochemistry

The use of alkynyl gold(I) complexes covers different research fields, such as bioinorganic chemistry, catalysis, and material science, considering the luminescent properties of the complexes. Regarding this last application, we report here the synthesis of three novel dinuclear gold(I) complexes of the general formula [(diNHC)(Au-C≡CPh)₂]: two Au-C≡CPh units are connected by a bridging di(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligand, which should favor the establishment of semi-supported aurophilic interactions. The complexes can be easily synthesized through mechanochemistry upon reacting the pristine dibromido complexes [(diNHC)(AuBr)₂] with phenylacetylene and KOH. Interestingly, we were also able to isolate the monosubstituted complex [(diNHC)(Au-C≡CPh)(AuBr)]. The gold(I) species were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The emission properties were also evaluated, and the salient data are comparable to those of analogous compounds reported in the literature.
