Reversible Photochromic Coordination Polymer by Phototriggered Subtle Molecular Conformation Variations

A new two-dimensional, spiropyran-based polymer fluorescent nanoprobe with quantitative-fluorescent and photochromic properties for multi-substance detection

One challenge of the structural design of a fluorescent probe is how to improve the detection performance on trace target analytes in complex samples. Herein a new polymer fluorescent nanoprobe (2DSP-C28) has been synthesized, by adopting a two-dimensional (2D), spiropyran (SP)-based nanosheet structure with hydrophobic long-chain alkanes (C28). Unlike a traditional SP-based small molecule probe, the 2DSP-C28probe can exhibit quantitative-fluorescent and photochromic properties. Under the detection of metal-ions, the nanoprobe in dimethyl sulfoxide aqueous solution is selectively fluorescent-quenched-responsive for Fe-ions (∼100μM), with a characteristic stoichiometric ratio of <10, a high sensitivity (limit of detection: ∼0.2μM). When the nanoprobe is incorporated into electrospun polyethylene oxide, it can be used for gas detection, and display a color-change with acid-base gas and identify the HF gas. It is expected that this new polymer fluorescent nanoprobe can be promisingly applied for rapidly environmental monitoring on the ion or gas pollution.

Double-Model Decay Strategy Integrating Persistent Photogenic Radicaloids with Dynamic Circularly Polarized Doublet Radiance and Triplet Afterglow

Organic phosphors integrating circularly polarized persistent luminescence (CPPL) across the visible range are widespread for applications in optical information encryption, bioimaging, and 3D display, but the pursuit of color-tunable CPPL in single-component organics remains a formidable task. Herein, via in situ photoimplanting radical ion pairing into axial chiral crystals, we present and elucidate an unprecedented double-module decay strategy to achieve a colorful CPPL through a combination of stable triplet emission from neutral diphosphine and doublet radiance from photogenic radicals in an exclusive crystalline framework. Owing to the photoactivation-dependent doublet radiance component and an inherent triplet phosphorescence in the asymmetric environment, the CPL vision can be regulated by altering the photoactivation and observation time window, allowing colorful glow tuning from blue and orange to delayed green emission. Mechanism studies clearly reveal that this asymmetric electron migration environment and hybrid n-π* and π-π* instincts are responsible for the afterglow and radical radiance at ambient conditions. Moreover, we demonstrate the applications of colorful CPPL for displays and encryption via manipulation of both excitation and observation times.

CuI-p-DPA coordination polymer isomers for "turn-on" fluorescence detection of thiophanate-methyl

Three copper iodide coordination polymer (CuI-p-DPA) isomers were prepared from the fluorescent organic ligand p-DPA and cuprous iodide (CuI) under different solvothermal conditions, which exhibited quenched fluorescence behaviors after forming coordination polymers (CPs). These CuI-p-DPA isomers showed discrepant fluorescence responses to thiophanate-methyl (TM). Among these CuI-p-DPA isomers, α-CuI-p-DPA exhibited the maximum fluorescence enhancement after its incubation with TM in aqueous solution. The fluorescence enhancement mechanism was that TM competed with the ligand p-DPA to coordinate with CuI clusters, and then α-CuI-p-DPA released p-DPA into the solution and induced fluorescence enhancement. The present detection method possesses the advantages of good selectivity, high sensitivity, short response time, and strong anti-interference ability with a linear range of 0.5-100 μM and a detection limit of 0.01 μM. This study not only reveals that the spatial structures of CPs play an important role in the fluorescence response ability, but also provide a new fluorescence signal-on analysis method to rapidly and sensitively determine the pesticide residue for TM.

One-dimensional coordinated polymers of tetraphenylethene pyridine and copper-iodide for fluorescence detection of nitroaromatic explosives

The spatial arrangement of molecules plays a crucial role in determining the macroscopic properties of functional materials. Coordinated polymers (CPs) formed by self-assembly of organic isomeric ligands and metals offer unique performance characteristics. In this study, we present the investigation of a one-dimensional CP, named CIT-E, composed of tetraphenylethene pyridine derivative (TPE-2by-2-E) ligands and copper iodide. The resulting CP exhibits a one-dimensional bead chain structure with exceptional thermal and chemical stability. By leveraging the competitive absorption between CIT-E and the explosive analog 2,4-dinitroaniline, we achieve detection of the explosive through changes in the absorption intensity of the excitation light source and subsequent fluorescence response. The CP demonstrates high selectivity and anti-interference ability in detecting 2,4-dinitroaniline in aqueous solution, with a detection linear range of 0.1 to 300 μM and a detection limit of 0.05 μM, surpassing the national third-level emission standard. These findings highlight the potential of CP CIT-E as a promising material for the detection of explosive nitroaromatic compounds.

Efficient fluorescence-enhanced probe for cyanide ions based on a tetraphenylethene pyridine coordinated copper-iodide complex

An efficient fluorescence-enhanced probe was developed for detecting cyanide ions (CN^-) based on a tetraphenylethene coordinated copper-iodide complex (named CIT-Z). The coordination polymers (CPs) prepared were (Z)-1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis[4-(pyridin-3-ylmethoxy)phenyl]ethene (1Z) and a CuI cluster, where the tetraphenylethylene (TPE) pyridine derivatives acted as organic ligands and the CuI cluster acted as a metal center. The higher-dimensional CIT-Z exhibited a 3-fold-interpenetrating network structure with excellent optical properties and chemical stability. This study also provides insights into the mechanism behind the fluorescence enhancement, which is attributed to the competitive coordination between CN^- and the ligands. The probe showed high selectivity and sensitivity towards CN^-, with a detection limit of 0.1 μM and good recovery in the real water samples.
