From 1D to 3D Graphitic Carbon Nitride (Melon): A Bottom-Up Route via Crystalline Microporous Templates

Borosilicate-Based Framework: Synthesis, Single-Crystal Structure Study, and Physical Properties

Herein, we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and optical properties of a metal-free three-dimensional (3D) inorganic covalent framework ((H2en)[Si(B4O9)], named CityU-11, where H2en is the abbreviation for ethanediamine). With the assistance of a tiny amount of F- ions and the selection of SiO2 as Si sources, single crystals of CityU-11 can be successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions. The precise structure information on CityU-11 has been disclosed through both single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and low-dose high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (LD-HRTEM). The SCXRD results showed that CityU-11 crystallized in the noncentrosymmetric space group of Pnn2, while LD-HRTEM suggested that CityU-11 possessed almost the same interplanar distances of 0.6 nm for both (200) and (020) crystal planes, which finely matched with the double peaks of 2θ = 15° in the pattern of its powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). CityU-11 also displayed an interesting optical property with a moderate birefringence of 0.0258@550 nm.

Organocatalysis with carbon nitrides

Carbon nitrides, a distinguished class of metal-free catalytic materials, have presented a good potential for chemical transformations and are expected to become prominent materials for organocatalysis. This is largely possible due to their low cost, exceptional thermal and chemical stability, non-toxicity, ease of functionalization, porosity development, etc. Especially, the carbon nitrides with increased porosity and nitrogen contents are more versatile than their bulk counterparts for catalysis. These N-rich carbon nitrides are discussed in the earlier parts of the review. Later, the review highlights the role of such carbon nitride materials for the various organic catalytic reactions including Knoevenagel condensation, oxidation, hydrogenation, esterification, transesterification, cycloaddition, and hydrolysis. The recently emerging concepts in carbon nitride-based organocatalysis have been given special attention. In each of the sections, the structure-property relationship of the materials was discussed and related to their catalysis action. Relevant comparisons with other catalytic materials are also discussed to realize their real potential value. The perspective, challenges, and future directions are also discussed. The overall objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information on new developments in carbon nitride-based organic catalysis reactions that could see them rising as prominent catalytic materials in the future.

Carbon-Nitride Popcorn-A Novel Catalyst Prepared by Self-Propagating Combustion of Nitrogen-Rich Triazenes

The interest in development of non-graphitic polymeric carbon nitrides (PCNs), with various C-to-N ratios, having tunable electronic, optical, and chemical properties is rapidly increasing. Here the first self-propagating combustion synthesis methodology for the facile preparation of novel porous PCN materials (PCN3-PCN7) using new nitrogen-rich triazene-based precursors is reported. This methodology is found to be highly precursor dependent, where variations in the terminal functional groups in the newly designed precursors (compounds 3-7) lead to different combustion behaviors, and morphologies of the resulted PCNs. The foam-type highly porous PCN5, generated from self-propagating combustion of 5 is comprehensively characterized and shows a C-to-N ratio of 0.67 (C₃ N_4.45 ). Thermal analyses of PCN5 formulations with ammonium perchlorate (AP) reveal that PCN5 has an excellent catalytic activity in the thermal decomposition of AP. This catalytic activity of PCN5 is further evaluated in a closer-to-application scenario, showing an increase of 18% in the burn rate of AP-Al-HTPB (with 2 wt% of PCN5) solid composite propellant. The newly developed template- and additive-free self-propagating combustion synthetic methodology using specially designed nitrogen-rich precursors should provide a novel platform for the preparation of non-graphitic PCNs with a variety of building block chemistries, morphologies, and properties suitable for a broad range of technologies.
