A3A'3Zn6Te4O24 (A = Na, A' = Rare Earth) Garnets: A-Site Ordered Noncentrosymmetric Structure, Photoluminescence, and Na-Ion Conductivity

ISODISTROTLaMTeO6 (M = Ga3+ and Mn3+): the critical role of electronic configuration and cation ordering in crystal structures

In this work, PbSb2O6-type oxides LaMTeO6 (M = Ga3+ and Mn3+) were synthesized and structurally characterized by Rietveld refinements against high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data. The Ga3+/Te6+ partial ordering within the honeycomb-like two-dimensional [GaTeO6]3- anionic layer leads to the loss of the inversion center between Ga3+ and Te6+; however the inversion center on the 3̄-roto-inversion axis is preserved, thereby resulting in a 2-fold PbSb2O6-type superstructure by doubling the c-axis associated with a structural symmetry descending from the original P3̄1m to P3̄1c symmetry. In contrast, LaMnTeO6 (P21/c) adopts a monoclinically distorted 4-fold superstructure with lattice dimensions of a ≈ aH, b ≈ √3aH, c ≈ 2cH, where aH and cH represent the lattice parameters of trigonal PbSb2O6. The formation of this P21/c-superstructure is attributed to the combination of complete Mn3+/Te6+ ordering and the first-order Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn3+ with the electronic configuration of d4. Such a monoclinic distortion can effectively lift the Mn3+ spin moments arranged on the triangular sublattice, resulting in a sharp peak for antiferromagnetic transition, which is in stark contrast to subtle magnetic transitions for PbSb2O6-type tellurates AMn(VI)TeO6 (A = alkaline earth and Pb2+) and LnCrTeO6 (Ln = rare earth) with higher structural symmetry. Our findings highlight that the electronic configuration effects of M-cations play a critical role in controlling the structure symmetry of LaMTeO6, providing a strategy to fine-tune the crystal structures and physical properties.

NaMoO3(IO3)(H2O): water molecule introduction induces strong second harmonic generation response, widened band gap and large anisotropy

Exploring feasible tactics to induce the formation of non-centrosymmetric (NCS) structures, especially from centrosymmetric (CS) structures, is essential for the development of nonlinear optical crystals with more potential. An NCS alkali metal-containing molybdenum iodate hydrate, namely, NaMoO3(IO3)(H2O), was designed based on the CS matrix NaMoO3(IO3) via introducing a water molecule into the structure. The introduction of one crystalline water molecule results in the rearrangement of Λ-shaped cis-[MoO4(IO3)2] units, and the proper array of the cis-[MoO4(IO3)2] units in NaMoO3(IO3)(H2O) results in its strong SHG response of 4.6 × KH2PO4. In addition, NaMoO3(IO3)(H2O) exhibits a wider optical bandgap of 3.44 eV and a larger birefringence of 0.231 than its matrix. Furthermore, the framework of NaMoO3(IO3)(H2O) is highly similar to that of α-KMoO3(IO3), with water molecules assisting Na+ cations in occupying the position of K+. However, due to the extra hydrogen bond of water molecules, the [MoO3(IO3)]∞ layers in NaMoO3(IO3)(H2O) retain a parallel-stacking arrangement, different from the antiparallel arrangement of layers in α-KMoO3(IO3) with a centric structure. This study confirms the feasibility of applying a water molecule to adjust the orientation of basic building block units to assemble an NCS structure based on CS crystals.

Rational design, crystal structure, and frustrated magnetism of the Ge-containing YbFe2O4-type layered oxides In2Zn3-xCoxGeO8 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3)

YbFe₂O₄-type layered oxides have attracted tremendous interest because the unique crystal comprises two distinct geometrically frustrated triangular cation-sublattices. Herein, a series of YbFe₂O₄-type materials In₂Zn_3-xCo_xGeO₈ (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) were rationally designed and experimentally synthesized for the first time. The crystal structures of In₂Zn_3-xCo_xGeO₈ were investigated comprehensively by Rietveld refinements against high-resolution monochromatic Cu K_α1 XRD data. Zn²⁺, Co²⁺, and Ge⁴⁺ cations are distributed randomly on the [MO]₂ bilayer and possess a trigonal bipyramid (TBP) coordination geometry. Because Co²⁺ has an unpaired electron in the d_z2 orbital and a larger electronegativity than Zn²⁺, Co²⁺-to-Zn²⁺ equivalent substitution in In₂Zn_3-xCo_xGeO₈ results in more compact MO₅-TBPs, which is the origin of anisotropic lattice expansion and contraction along the a and c axes, respectively. The Co²⁺ moments in the [MO]₂ bilayer are strongly AFM coupled and geometrically frustrated, therefore resulting in a spin-glass magnetic transition at around T_g = 20 K for In₂ZnCo₂GeO₈, while a long-range AFM ordering is established for In₂Co₃GeO₈ with a Néel temperature of 53 K, attributed to the significantly enhanced AFM interactions and increased In³⁺/Co²⁺ anti-site disordering, as compared to those in In₂ZnCo₂GeO₈.

Temperature-driven order-disorder structural transition in the oxygen sub-lattice and the complex superstructure of the high-temperature polymorph of CaSrZn2Ga2O7

Structural order-disorder plays a decisive role in the physical properties of materials, such as magnetism, second-order harmonic generation, and ionic conductivity, and it is thus widely utilized to manipulate the crystal structure and understand structure-property correlations. Herein, we report the structural polymorphism, complex crystal structure and temperature-driven irreversible order-disorder phase transition of the polar oxides (Sr_1-xCa_x)SrZn₂Ga₂O₇. The low-temperature (LT) structure crystallizes in Pna2₁ with partial Zn/Ga ordering. Upon heating, (Sr_1-xCa_x)SrZn₂Ga₂O₇ undergoes an irreversible phase transition from orthorhombic Pna2₁ to hexagonal P6₃. Interestingly, the high-temperature (HT) P6₃ structure possesses an unexpected 3/2-fold superstructure rather than a substructure of the low-temperature (LT) Pna2₁ structure, which is a rare structural phenomenon in solid-state chemistry. This new HT superstructure is the most complex one in this series of oxides with 21 crystallographically independent sites determined accurately by a combination of the maximum entropy method and Rietveld refinement against high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data. In terms of the mechanism, this is a temperature-driven order-to-disorder transition in the oxygen sublattice. A careful structural analysis revealed that the oxygen disordering mainly occurs in the [SrO₃] layers of the HT structure and it can be understood as respective clockwise and anticlockwise rotations of distinct GaO₄-tetrahedra along the c-axis. Alternating current electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analysis revealed that the oxygen disordering in the HT structure is incapable of giving rise to oxide ionic conductivity but does lead to increased electronic conduction compared to the LT structure. The optical properties of the CaSrZn₂Ga₂O₇ and Sr₂Zn₂Ga₂O₇ representatives are also investigated in-depth via diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and theoretic calculations.
