From the Free Ligand to the Transition Metal Complex: FeEDTA- Formation Seen at Ligand K-Edges

The role of carboxylate ligand orbitals in the breathing dynamics of a metal-organic framework by resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit structural flexibility induced by temperature and guest adsorption, as demonstrated in the structural breathing transition in certain MOFs between narrow-pore and large-pore phases. Soft modes were suggested to entropically drive such pore breathing through enhanced vibrational dynamics at high temperatures. In this work, oxygen K-edge resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy of the MIL-53(Al) MOF was performed to selectively probe the electronic perturbation accompanying pore breathing dynamics at the ligand carboxylate site for metal-ligand interaction. It was observed that the temperature-induced vibrational dynamics involves switching occupancy between antisymmetric and symmetric configurations of the carboxylate oxygen lone pair orbitals, through which electron density around carboxylate oxygen sites is redistributed and metal-ligand interactions are tuned. In turn, water adsorption involves an additional perturbation of π orbitals not observed in the structural change solely induced by temperature.

Electronic structure, bonding and stability of fumarate, maleate, and succinate dianions from X-ray spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the fumarate, maleate, and succinate dianions in the context of their stability is determined in a joint experimental and computational study with X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the O K-edge. The study reveals differences in the electronic states and molecular orbitals of the three molecules. In particular, maleate has a non-degenerate oxygen core-orbital with an energy difference of approximately 0.15 eV, visible in a two peak structure in XAS. Polarization-dependent RIXS provides information on the orientation of the occupied valence molecular orbitals with respect to the carboxylate group plane and shows a gradually increasing energy gap between the HOMO and excited π* LUMO from fumarate to maleate to succinate. We also demonstrate the energy excitation dependence of the RIXS spectra of maleate, with the total inelastic RIXS profile shifting towards higher energy loss as the detuning is increased from negative to positive values. Our findings show that maleate is less stable than fumarate and succinate due to the presence of electronic density on its HOMO orbital on the CC bond between carboxylate groups, which can lead to weaker bonding of maleate with molecules or ions.

Electronic Structure of the Complete Series of Gas-Phase Manganese Acetylacetonates by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Metal centers in transition metal-ligand complexes occur in a variety of oxidation states causing their redox activity and therefore making them relevant for applications in physics and chemistry. The electronic state of these complexes can be studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which is, however, due to the complex spectral signature not always straightforward. Here, we study the electronic structure of gas-phase cationic manganese acetylacetonate complexes Mn(acac)1-3+ using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the metal center and ligand constituents. The spectra are well reproduced by multiconfigurational wave function theory, time-dependent density functional theory as well as parameterized crystal field and charge transfer multiplet simulations. This enables us to get detailed insights into the electronic structure of ground-state Mn(acac)1-3+ and extract empirical parameters such as crystal field strength and exchange coupling from X-ray excitation at both the metal and ligand sites. By comparison to X-ray absorption spectra of neutral, solvated Mn(acac)2,3 complexes, we also show that the effect of coordination on the L3 excitation energy, routinely used to identify oxidation states, can contribute about 40-50% to the observed shift, which for the current study is 1.9 eV per oxidation state.
