Enhancing Electrocatalytic NO Reduction to NH3 by the CoS Nanosheet with Sulfur Vacancies

An Amorphization-Engineered Catalyst for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitric Oxide to Ammonia

Electrocatalytic NO-to-NH3 conversion (NORR) provides a fascinating route toward the eco-friendly and valuable production of NH3. In this study, amorphous FeS2 (a-FeS2) is first demonstrated as a high-efficiency catalyst for the NORR, showing a maximum FENH3 of 92.5% with a corresponding NH3 yield rate of 227.1 μmol h-1 cm-2, outperforming most NORR catalysts reported earlier. Experimental measurements combined with theoretical computations clarify that the exceptional NORR activity of a-FeS2 originates from the amorphization-induced upshift of the d-band center to promote the NO activation and NO-to-NH3 hydrogenation energetics.

Fundamentals, rational catalyst design, and remaining challenges in electrochemical NOx reduction reaction

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions carry pernicious consequences on air quality and human health, prompting an upsurge of interest in eliminating them from the atmosphere. The electrochemical NOx reduction reaction (NOxRR) is among the promising techniques for NOx removal and potential conversion into valuable chemical feedstock with high conversion efficiency while benefiting energy conservation. However, developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for NOxRR remains an arduous challenge. This review provides a comprehensive survey of recent advancements in NOxRR, encompassing the underlying fundamentals of the reaction mechanism and rationale behind the design of electrocatalysts using computational modeling and experimental efforts. The potential utilization of NOxRR in a Zn-NOx battery is also explored as a proof of concept for concurrent NOx abatement, NH3 synthesis, and decarbonizing energy generation. Despite significant strides in this domain, several hurdles still need to be resolved in developing efficient and long-lasting electrocatalysts for NOx reduction. These possible means are necessary to augment the catalytic activity and electrocatalyst selectivity and surmount the challenges of catalyst deactivation and corrosion. Furthermore, sustained research and development of NOxRR could offer a promising solution to the urgent issue of NOx pollution, culminating in a cleaner and healthier environment.

Upcycling air pollutants to fuels and chemicals via electrochemical reduction technology

The intensification of fossil fuel usage results in significant air pollution levels. Efforts have been put into developing efficient technologies capable of converting air pollution into valuable products, including fuels and valuable chemicals (e.g., CO₂ to hydrocarbon and syngas and NO_x to ammonia). Among the strategic efforts to mitigate the excessive concentration of CO₂ and NO_x pollutants in the atmosphere, the electrochemical reduction technology of CO₂ (CO₂RR) and NO_x (NO_xRR) emerges as one of the most promising approaches. It is even more attractive if CO₂RR and NO_xRR are paired with renewables to store intermittent electricity in the form of chemical feedstocks. This review provides an overview of the electrochemical reduction process to convert CO₂ to C₁ and/or C₂₊ chemicals and NO_x to ammonia (NH₃) with a focus on electrocatalysts, electrolytes, electrolyzer, and catalytic reactor designs toward highly selective electrochemical conversion of the desired products. While the attempts in these aspects are enormous, economic consideration and environmental feasibility for actual implementation are not comprehensively provided. We discuss CO₂RR and NO_xRR from the life cycle and techno-economic analyses to perceive the feasibility of the current achievements. The remaining challenges associated with the industrial implementation of electrochemical CO₂ and NO_x reduction are additionally provided.

Electrocatalytic NO Reduction to NH3 on Mo2C Nanosheets

Electrocatalytic reduction of NO to NH₃ (NORR) emerges as a promising route for achieving harmful NO treatment and sustainable NH₃ generation. In this work, we first report that Mo₂C is an active and selective NORR catalyst. The developed Mo₂C nanosheets deliver a high NH₃ yield rate of 122.7 μmol h^-1 cm^-2 with an NH₃ Faradaic efficiency of 86.3% at -0.4 V. Theoretical computations unveil that the surface-terminated Mo atoms on Mo₂C can effectively activate NO, promote protonation energetics, and suppress proton adsorption, resulting in high NORR activity and selectivity of Mo₂C.
