Size-Dependent Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Activity for a Series of Atomically Precise Nickel-Thiolate Clusters

A homologous series of macrocyclic Ni clusters: synthesis, structures, and catalytic properties

Due to their intriguing ring structures and promising applications, nickel-thiolate clusters, such as [Nin(SR)2n] (n = 4-6), have attracted tremendous interest. However, investigation of the synthesis, structures, and properties of macrocyclic Nin clusters (n > 8) has been seriously impeded. In this work, a homologous series of macrocyclic nickel clusters, Nin(4MPT)2n (n = 9-12), was fabricated by using 4-methylphenthiophenol (4MPT) as the ligand. The structures and compositions of the clusters were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) in combination with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the electronic structures of the clusters do not change significantly with the increase of Ni atoms. The coordination interactions between Ni and S atoms in [NiS4] subunits are proved to play a crucial rule in the remarkable stability of Ni clusters. Finally, these clusters display excellent catalytic activity towards the reduction of p-nitrophenol, and a linear correlation between catalytic activity and ring size was revealed. The study provides a facile approach to macrocyclic homoleptic nickel clusters, and contributes to an in-depth understanding of the structure-property correlations of nickel clusters at the atomic level.

Photochemical synthesis of group 10 metal nanoclusters for electrocatalysis

Four group 10 metal nanoclusters, Ni10(4-MePhS)20, Ni11(PhS)22, Pd9(PhS)18 and Pd10(PhS)20 were synthesized from disulfides based on a photochemical reduction-oxidation cascade process, which proceeds via a different mechanism to that of the conventional two-step reduction process. The as-obtained nanoclusters possess oxidative resistance and structural robustness under different conditions. Their atomically precise structures are determined to be nickel or palladium rings in which the metal atoms are bridged by Ar-S groups. Their catalytic performance in oxygen reduction reaction was compared, and the ring size-dependent catalytic activity of the group 10 metal nanoclusters was revealed. This work provides an efficient route to atomically precise and structurally stable group 10 metal nanoclusters, and sheds light on their further applications in electrocatalysis.

One-step preparation of Pt/Ag nanoclusters for CO2 transformation

Structurally precise metal nanoclusters with a facile synthetic process and high catalytic performance have been long pursued. These atomically precise nanocatalysts are regarded as model systems to study structure-performance relationships, surface coordination chemistry, and the reaction mechanism of heterogeneous metal catalysts. Nevertheless, the research on silver-based nanoclusters for driving chemical transformations is sluggish in comparison to gold counterparts. Herein, we report the one-step synthesis of Pt/Ag alloy nanoclusters of [PtAg9(C18H12Br3P)7Cl3](C18H12Br3P), which are highly active in catalysing cycloaddition reactions of CO2 and epoxides. The cluster was obtained in a rather simple way with the reduction of silver and platinum salts in the presence of ligands in one pot. The molecular structure of the titled cluster describes the protection of the Pt-centred Ag9 crown by the shell of phosphine ligands and halides. Its electronic structure, as revealed by density function theoretical calculations, adopts a superatomic geometry with 1S21P6 configuration. Interestingly, the cluster displays high activity in the formation of cyclic carbonates from CO2 under mind conditions.

Improved activity for the oxygen evolution reaction using a tiara-like thiolate-protected nickel nanocluster

Practical electrochemical water splitting and carbon-dioxide reduction are desirable for a sustainable energy society. In particular, facilitating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, the reaction at the anode) will increase the efficiency of these reactions. Nickel (Ni) compounds are excellent OER catalysts under basic conditions, and atomically precise Ni clusters have been actively studied to understand their complex reaction mechanisms. In this study, we evaluated the geometric/electronic structure of tiara-like metal nanoclusters [Ni_n(PET)_2n; n = 4, 5, 6, where PET refers to phenylethanethiolate] with the same SR ligand. The geometric structure of Ni₅(SR)₁₀ was determined for the first time using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Additionally, combined electrochemical measurements and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements revealed that Ni₅(SR)₁₀ easily forms an OER intermediate and therefore exhibits a high specific activity.
