pH-Stable Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Selective Detection of Aqueous-Phase FeIII and CrVI Ions

Simple fluorochromic detection of chromium with ascorbic acid functionalized luminescent Bio-MOF-1

The bioaccumulation of various heavy metals in the environment and agriculture is posing serious hazards to human health. Hexavalent chromium is one of the most encountered heavy metal pollutants. The routine monitoring of Cr(VI) via simple methods assumes great analytical significance in sectors like environmental safety, food quality, etc. This study reports a novel biocompatible and luminescent metal-organic framework (ascorbic acid functionalized Bio-MOF-1) based "Turn-on" nanoprobe for rapid and sensitive optical detection of Cr(VI). Bio-MOF-1 has been synthesized, functionalized with ascorbic acid (AA), and then comprehensively characterized for its key material properties. The presence of Cr(VI) results in the photoluminescence recovery of Bio-MOF-1/AA. Using the above approach, Cr(VI) is detected over a wide concentration range of 0.02 to 20 ng mL-1, with the limit of detection being 0.01 ng mL-1. The nanoprobe is capable of detecting Cr(VI) in real water as well as in some spiked food samples. Hence, the ascorbic acid functionalized Bio-MOF-1 nanoprobe is established as a potential on-field detection tool for Cr(VI).

Variation in Catalytic Efficacies of a 2D pH-Stable MOF by Altering Activation Methods

Although it is well-known that the Lewis acidity of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can effectively enhance their catalytic activity in organic transformations, access to these Lewis-acidic sites remains a key hurdle to widespread applications of Lewis-acidic catalysis by MOFs. Easy accessibility of strong Lewis acidic sites onto 2D MOFs by using proper activation methods can be a cornerstone in attaining desired catalytic performance. Herein, we report a new 2D chemically stable MOF, IITKGP-60, which displayed excellent framework robustness over a wide pH range (2-12). Benefiting from the abundant open metal sites (OMSs) and framework robustness, the catalytic activity of the developed material was explored in one-pot three-component Strecker reaction and Knoevenagel condensation reaction. Moreover, the developed catalyst is superior in catalyzing the reactions involving sterically hindered substrate (1-naphthaldehyde) with high turnover number. A comparative catalytic study was conducted using different activation methods (chloroform and methanol exchanged activated samples), highlighting the significant effect of activation methods on its catalytic performances. The sustainable synthetic pathway under solvent-free conditions for a broad scope of substrates using low catalyst loading and excellent recyclability made the developed pH-stable framework a promising heterogeneous catalyst.

Mechanistical Insights into the Ultrasensitive Detection of Radioactive and Chemotoxic UO22+ Ions by a Porous Anionic Co-Metal-Organic Framework

Development of a simple, cost-efficient, and portable UO22+ sensory probe with high selectivity and sensitivity is highly desirable in the context of monitoring radioactive contaminants. Herein, we report a luminescent Co-based metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Me2NH2]0.5[Co(DATRz)0.5(NH2BDC)]·xG}n (1), equipped with abundant amino functionalities for the selective detection of uranyl cations. The ionic structure consists of two types of channels decorated with plentiful Lewis basic amino moieties, which trigger a stronger acid-base interaction with the diffused cationic units and thus can selectively quench the fluorescence intensity in the presence of other interfering ions. Furthermore, the limit of detection for selective UO22+ sensing was achieved to be as low as 0.13 μM (30.94 ppb) with rapid responsiveness and multiple recyclabilities, demonstrating its excellent efficacy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further unraveled the preferred binding sites of the UO22+ ions in the tubular channel of the MOF structure. Orbital hybridization between NH2BDC/DATRz and UO22+ together with its significantly large electron-accepting ability is identified as responsible for the luminescence quenching. More importantly, the prepared 1@PVDF {poly(vinylidene difluoride)} mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) displayed good fluorescence activity comparable to 1, which is of great significance for their practical employment as MOF-based luminosensors in real-world sensing application.

Highly selective detection and removal of mercury ions in the aquatic environment based on magnetic ZIF-71 multifunctional composites with sufficient chlorine functional groups

The development of both detection and removal technologies for heavy metal ions is of great importance. Most of the existing adsorbents that contain oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur functional groups can remove heavy metals, but achieving both selective detection and removal of a single metal ion is difficult because they bind to a wide range of heavy metal ions. Herein, we selected zeolite imidazolium hydrochloride framework-71 (ZIF-71) with sufficient chlorine functional groups to fabricate magnetic ZIF-71 multifunctional composites (M-ZIF-71). M-ZIF-71 had a large specific surface area, excellent water stability, and good magnetic properties, which made M-ZIF-71 conducive to the separation and recovery of adsorbents and the assembly of electrodes. M-ZIF-71 exhibited high selectivity, wide linear range (1-500 μg/L), and low detection limit (0.32 μg/L) for electrochemical detection of mercury ions (Hg2+). Meanwhile, M-ZIF-71 demonstrated rapid Hg2+ adsorption with a high capacity of 571.2 mg/g and excellent recyclability. The high selectivity for Hg2+ was attributed to the powerful affinity of highly electronegative chlorine and Hg2+. Moreover, XPS spectra demonstrated the interaction between chlorine and Hg2+. This work provides a new inspiration for applications in the targeted monitoring and removal of heavy metal pollution.

Selective Detection of Primary Aromatic Amines through Enhanced Luminescence of a 2D + 2D Inclined Polycatenated Microporous Nitro-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework

Detection and sensing of amines through enhanced fluorescence emission are always challenging in aqueous solution. The range of different Lewis basicities, shapes, and sizes as well as the different structural arrangements of amines is responsible for their less specificity in aqueous solution. Here, we have designed a highly fluorescent emissive 2D + 2D → 3D inclined polycatenated NO2-functionalized flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) for selective segregation of electron-rich aromatic primary amines from electron-deficient amines in aqueous solution, showing different emission behaviors. The inclined polycatenated 2D + 2D → 3D MOF having an asymmetric unit {[Cd(dim)(2-nta)(H2O)](H2O)(MeOH)}n (1) has been synthesized by a slow diffusion process and characterized thoroughly by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) as well as other physicochemical methods. The desolvated species of 1 (Ref. MOF) is found to be stable and has been characterized by PXRD and adsorption study. The fluorescence profile of the Ref. MOF shows selective enhancement in the presence of electron-rich primary aromatic amines, while the same shows quenching for electron-deficient amines in aqueous solution. The Ref. MOF reported here consists of flexible space between two 2D layers that is responsible for different orientations for different analyte primary aromatic amines (PAAs) with different sizes. The above findings are also supported by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The respective fluorescence enhancement and quenching have been explained by the interaction between the CB of the host MOF and LUMO of guest amines. Therefore, this work presents an operable method for the sensing of PAAs using a single compound, which is a polycatenated MOF.

A Luminescent Cd-MOF Used as a Chemosensor for High-Efficiency Sensing of Fe3+, Cr(IV), Trinitrophenol, and Colchicine

A Cd-MOF was constructed based on 3,5-bis(4-carboxyphenyl) pyridine under solvothermal conditions. Its structure and phase purity were verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Thereafter, some studies on the morphology, structure, and luminescent properties of the compound were carried out. The compound exhibited a highly sensitive response to Fe3+, Cr(IV), trinitrophenol (TNP), and colchicine based on the fluorescence-quenching mechanism. The possible mechanism of luminescence quenching was discussed in detail.

The {Cu2I2} cluster bearing metal organic frameworks: crystal structures and fluorescence detecting performances towards cysteine and explosive molecules

Two {Cu2I2} cluster-bearing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) of {[Eu(CuI)2(INA)3DMF]·0.95DMF}n (Eu-CuI-INA) and {K[(CH3)2NH2]Sr4(INA)2(DMF)2{(Cu2I2)2(INA)8}·2H2O}n (Sr-K-CuI-INA, HINA = isonicotinic acid, DMF = N,N-dimethyl formamide) were prepared and characterized in this work. Both materials feature a three-dimensional (3-D) structure, in which the {Cu2I2} clusters and Eu3+ (or Sr2+) metal ions are coordinated by INA- ligands with pyridine and carboxylic groups, respectively. Impressively, Sr-K-CuI-INA exhibits sensitive fluorescence sensing behaviors towards cysteine and nitro-bearing molecules, demonstrating potential FL sensing applications for bio and explosive molecules. This work would provide a good reference for designing fluorescent MOF probes containing CuI molecules.

Site-Memory-Triggered Reversible Acronym Encryption in a Nitrogen-Rich Pore-Partitioned MOF for Ultrasensitive Monitoring of Roxarsone and Dichloran over Multiple Platform

Stimuli-responsive emission color modulation in fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promises luminescence-ink-based security application, while task-specific functionality-engineered pores can aid fast-responsive, discriminative, and ultralow detection of harmful organo-aromatics in the aqueous phase. Considering practical applicability, a self-calibrated fluoro-switch between encrypted and decrypted states is best suited for antiforgery measures, whereas image-based monitoring of organo-toxins by repetitive and handy methods over multiple platforms endorses in-field sensory potential. Herein, we constructed a mixed-ligand based chemically stable and bilayered-pillar MOF from -NH2-hooked pyridyl linker and tricarboxylate ligand that embraces negatively charged [Cd3(μ2-OH)(COO)6] node and shows pore-space-partitioning by nitrogen-rich flanked organic struts. Owing to the presence of a self-calibrating triazolylamine moiety-grafted auxiliary linker, this anionic MOF delineates reversible and multicyclic fluoro-swapping between protonated-encrypted and deprotonated-decrypted domains in the alternative presence of acid and base. Such pH-triggered, site-specific luminescence variation is utilized to construct highly regenerative anticounterfeiting labels for vivid acronym encryption. The intense fluorescence signature of the material is further harnessed in extremely selective and quick responsive sensing of harmful feed additive roxarsone (ROX) and dichloran (DCNA) pesticide in highly recyclable fashion with significant quenching and nanomolar limits of detection (ROX: 52 ppb; DCNA: 26.8 ppb). Notably, the ultrasensitive fluoro-detection of both these organo-toxins is successfully demonstrated via a handy paper-strip method as well as on the vegetable surface for real-time monitoring. Comprehensive density functional theory studies validate the electron transfer mechanism through redistribution of molecular orbital energy levels by each of the targeted analytes in this electron-rich framework besides evidencing MOF-analyte supramolecular interactions.

A Water-Stable Cationic SIFSIX MOF for Luminescent Probing of Cr2 O7 2- via Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation

The sensing and monitoring of toxic oxo-anion contaminants in water are of significant importance to biological and environmental systems. A rare hydro-stable SIFSIX metal-organic framework, SiF6 @MOF-1, {[Cu(L)2 (H2 O)2 ]·(SiF6 )(H2 O)}n , with exchangeable SiF6 2- anion in its pore is strategically designed and synthesized, exhibiting selective detection of toxic Cr2 O7 2- oxo-anion in an aqueous medium having high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability through fluorescence quenching phenomena. More importantly, the recognition and ion exchange mechanism is unveiled through the rarely explored single-crystal-to-single crystal (SC-SC) fashion with well-resolved structures. A thorough SC-SC study with interfering anions (Cl- , F- , I- , NO3 - , HCO3 - , SO4 2- , SCN- , IO3 - ) revealed no such transformations to take place, as per line with quenching studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that despite a lesser binding affinity, Cr2 O7 2- shows strong orbital mixing and large driving forces for electron transfer than SiF6 2- , and thus enlightens the fluorescence quenching mechanism. This work inaugurates the usage of a SIFSIX MOF toward sensing application domain under aqueous medium where hydrolytic stability is a prime concern for their plausible implementation as sensor materials.

pH-Stable Zn(II) Coordination Polymer as a Multiresponsive Turn-On and Turn-Off Fluorescent Sensor for Aqueous Medium Detection of Al(III) and Cr(VI) Oxo-Anions

Nowadays, coordination polymers (CPs) are promising candidates as sensory materials for their high sensitivity, improved selectivity, fast responsive nature, as well as good recyclability. However, poor chemical stability often makes their practical usage limited. Herein, employing a mixed ligand approach, we constructed a chemically robust CP, {[Zn2L2(DPA)2]·3H2O}n (IITKGP-70, IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also over a broad range of pH solutions (pH = 3-11). The developed framework displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of trivalent Al3+ ions and toxic hexavalent Cr(VI)-oxo anions in an aqueous medium. The developed framework exhibited an aqueous medium Al3+ turn-on phenomenon with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 1.29 μM, whereas a turn-off effect was observed for toxic oxo-anions (Cr2O72- and CrO42-) having LOD values of 0.27 and 0.71 μM, respectively. Both turn-on and turn-off mechanisms are speculated via spectroscopic methods coupled with several ex situ studies. Such a multiresponsive nature (both turn-on and turn-off) for aqueous medium detection of targeted cations and anions simultaneously in a single platform coupled with high robustness, ease of scalability, recyclability, and fast-responsive nature makes IITKGP-70 highly fascinating as a sensory material for real-world applications.

Highly Robust Metal-Organic Framework for Efficiently Catalyzing Knoevenagel Condensation and the Strecker Reaction under Solvent-Free Conditions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as one of the most promising porous materials and offer great opportunities for the rational design of new catalytic solids having great structural diversity and functional tunability. Despite numerous inherent merits, their chemical environment instability limits their practical usage and demands further exploration. Herein, by employing the mixed-ligand approach, we have designed and developed a robust 3D Co-MOF, [Co2(μ2-O)(TDC)2(L)(H2O)2]·2DMF (H2TDC = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid, L = 3,3'-azobispyridine), IITKGP-50 (IITKGP stands for the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur), which exhibited excellent framework robustness not only in water but also in a wide range of aqueous pH solutions (pH = 2-12). Taking advantage of superior framework robustness and the presence of high-density open metal sites, IITKGP-50 was further explored in catalyzing the two-component Knoevenagel condensation reaction and three-component Strecker reactions. Moreover, to verify the size selectivity of IITKGP-50, smaller to bulkier substrates in comparison with the MOF's pore cavity (8.1 × 5.6 Å2) were employed, in which relatively lesser conversions for the sterically bulkier aldehyde derivatives confirmed that the catalytic cycle occurs inside the pore cavity. The easy scalability, lower catalyst loading compared to that of benchmark MOFs, magnificent conversion rate over a wide range of substrates, and excellent recyclability without significant performance loss made IITKGP-50 a promising heterogeneous catalyst candidate.

Zn(II)-Based Mixed-Ligand-Bearing Coordination Polymers as Multi-Responsive Fluorescent Sensors for Detecting Dichromate, Iodide, Nitenpyram, and Imidacloprid

Coordination polymers (CPs) are organo-inorganic porous materials consisting of metal ions or clusters and organic linkers. These compounds have attracted attention for use in the fluorescence detection of pollutants. Here, two Zn-based mixed-ligand-bearing CPs, [Zn₂(DIN)₂(HBTC^2-)₂] (CP-1) and [Zn(DIN)(HBTC^2-)]·ACN·H₂O (CP-2) (DIN = 1,4-di(imidazole-1-yl)naphthalene, H₃BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, and ACN = acetonitrile), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. CP-1 and CP-2 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Solid-state fluorescence analysis revealed an emission peak at 350 nm upon excitation at 225 and 290 nm. Fluorescence sensing tests showed that CP-1 was highly efficient, sensitive, and selective for detecting Cr₂O₇^2- at 225 and 290 nm, whereas I^- was only detected well at an excitation of 225 nm. CP-1 detected pesticides differently at excitation wavelengths of 225 and 290 nm; the highest quenching rates were for nitenpyram at 225 nm and imidacloprid at 290 nm. The quenching process may occur via the inner filter effect and fluorescence resonance energy transfer.

AIEgen-sensitized lanthanide nanocrystals as luminescent probes for intracellular Fe3+ monitoring

The abnormal Fe³⁺ level is known to cause various diseases, such as heart failure, liver damage and neurodegeneration. In situ probing Fe³⁺ in living cells or organisms is highly desired for both biological research and medical diagnostics. Herein, hybrid nanocomposites NaEuF₄@TCPP were constructed by the assembly of an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) TCPP and NaEuF₄ nanocrystals (NCs). The anchored TCPP on the surface of NaEuF₄ NCs can reduce rotational relaxation of the excited state and efficiently transfer the energy to the Eu³⁺ ions with minimized nonradiative energy loss. Consequently, the prepared NaEuF₄@TCPP nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited an intense red emission with a 103-fold enhancement relative to that in NaEuF₄ NCs under 365 nm excitation. A selectively quenching response to Fe³⁺ ions for the NaEuF₄@TCPP NPs makes them luminescent probes for sensitive detection of Fe³⁺ ions with a low detection limit of 340 nM. Moreover, the luminescence of NaEuF₄@TCPP NPs could be recovered by the addition of iron chelators. Benefiting from their good biocompatibility and stability in living cells, together with the characteristic of the reversible luminescence response, the lipo-coated NaEuF₄@TCPP probes were successfully applied for real-time monitoring of Fe³⁺ ions in living HeLa cells. These results are expected to motivate the exploration of AIE-based lanthanide probes for sensing and biomedical applications.

Highly Tunable MOF Luminophores Featuring Anthracene Directed Assembly and Fluorescence Regulation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as a potential platform for the development of tunable luminophores owing to their highly modulable structures and components. Herein, two MOF luminophores based on Cd(II) ions, 1,3,5-tri(4-pyridinyl)benzene (TPB), and 1,4-dicarboxybenzene (H₂BDC) were constructed. The directed assembly of the metal ions and organic linkers results in [Cd₂(BDC)₂(TPB)(H₂O)]·x(solvent) (MOF-1) featuring TPB-based blue fluorescence centered at 425 nm. By introducing anthracene as the structure directing agent (SDA) for assembly regulation, [Cd₂(BDC)(TPB)₂(NO₃)₂]·x(solvent) (MOF-2) was obtained, which reveals anthracene feeding-dependent high tunable emission in the 517-650 nm range. Detailed components, photophysical properties, and structural characteristics investigations of MOF-2 indicate the TPB and NO₃^- interactions as the origin of its redshifted emission compared with that of MOF-1. Furthermore, the fluorescence of MOF-2 was found to be regulatable by the anthracene feeding based on the SDA-determined crystallinity of the crystalline sample. All these results provided a unique example of the structural and fluorescence regulation of MOF luminophores.

Multifunctional Cd-CP for fluorescence sensing of Cr(VI), MnO4-, acetylacetone and ascorbic acid in aqueous solutions

The development of multifunctional fluorescent chemosensors for the detection of multiple targets remains challenging but of great importance. In this paper, one novel coordination polymer (CP), denoted as [Cd₂(edda)(phen)₂]∙H₂O (compound 1, H₄edda = 5,5' (ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)) diisophthalic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) is successfully designed and prepared under hydrothermal conditions. Structural analysis indicates that compound 1 possesses a one-dimensional (1D) double chain structure, then self-assembles into a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular framework via π…π interactions between phen molecules. Interestingly, compound 1 is found to be tolerant in wide range of acidic to alkaline aqueous solutions (pH = 2-13). Fluorescent spectral investigations reveal that compound 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive fluorescence responses toward MnO₄^-, Cr(VI) ions, acetylacetone (acac) and ascorbic acid (AA) by fluorescence quenching in the aqueous phase. The detection limits are in the very low range, reaching μM level for the detection of MnO₄^-, Cr(VI) ions, nM for AA and ppm for acac detection. The distinguished multi-responsive performance suggests compound 1 to be a potential multifunctional probe. Furthermore, the possible quenching mechanisms have also been systematically investigated in this work.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Chemosensor for Ultrafast and Ultrasensitive Detection of Pd2+ Ions in Water, Real Specimens, and Test Strips

A new ultrasensitive and ultrafast Al(III) metal-organic-framework (MOF)-based probe (1) was constructed to detect Pd²⁺ ions. Extremely selective recognition of Pd²⁺ ion was demonstrated by the guest-free compound 1 (called 1') using a fluorescence signal. The quenching in the fluorescence signal was observed due to the weak interaction between the linker alkyne-π bond and Pd²⁺. The mechanism of isophthalic alkyne-π and Pd²⁺ interaction was systematically examined with the help of isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The response time of the MOF for sensing of Pd²⁺ was 30 s, which is the lowest response time for MOF-based Pd²⁺ sensing to date, with an ultralow detection limit (102 nM) and Stern-Volmer constant (4.39 × 10³ M^-1), evidencing the outstanding ability to sense Pd²⁺ ion by this probe. The Pd²⁺ detection limit falls among the lowest values. Activated MOF (1') also showed considerable recyclability up to five steps with a constant sensing ability. In different water resources (Milli-Q water, lake water, river water, and tap water), the probe also showed excellent sensing ability. A paper-strip device was developed for the applicability of our material for the real field sensing application of Pd²⁺. The relevance of 1' is not only up to Pd²⁺, but it could also sense palladium in other possible oxidation states.

Three new Zn(ii) coordination polymers for highly selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+

In this work, three novel Zn(ii)-CPs with diverse structures and fascinating topologies can be highly selective and sensitive luminescent sensors for detection of Fe3+.

A Highly Selective MOF-Based Probe for Turn-On Luminescent Detection of Al3+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ in Solution and Test Paper Strips through Absorbance Caused Enhancement Mechanism

Trivalent metal ions (Cr³⁺, Al³⁺, and Fe³⁺) constitute a major section of the environmental pollutants, and their excess accumulation has a detrimental effect on health, so their detection in trace quantity has been a hot topic of research. A highly scalable 3D porous Zn-based luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized by exploiting the mixed ligand synthesis concept. The strategic selection of an aromatic π-conjugated organic linker and N-rich spacer containing the azine functionality as metal ion binding sites immobilized across the pore spaces, have made this MOF an ideal turn-on sensor for Al³⁺, Cr³⁺, and Fe³⁺ ions with very high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability. An in-depth study revealed absorbance caused enhancement mechanism (ACE) responsible for such turn-on phenomena. In order to make the detection process straightforward, convenient, portable, and economically viable, we have fabricated MOF test paper strips (the MOF could be simply immobilized onto the paper strips) for naked eye visual detection under UV light, which, thus, manifests its potential as a real-time smart sensor for these trivalent ions.
