Sulfate Derivatives with Heteroleptic Tetrahedra: New Deep-Ultraviolet Birefringent Materials in which Weak Interactions Modulate Functional Module Ordering. Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2024:e202413680. Abstract
Deep-ultraviolet (UV) birefringent materials are urgently needed to facilitate light polarization in deep-UV lithography. Maximizing anisotropy by regulating the alignment of functional modules is essential for improving the linear optical performance of birefringent materials. In this work, we proposed a strategy to design deep-UV birefringent materials that achieve functional module ordering via weak interactions. Following this strategy, four compounds CN4H7SO3CF3, CN4H7SO3CH3, C(NH2)3SO3CH3, and C(NH2)3SO3CF3 were identified as high-performance candidates for deep-UV birefringent materials. The millimeter-sized crystals of CN4H7SO3CF3, CN4H7SO3CH3, and C(NH2)3SO3CH3 were grown, and the transmittance spectra show that their cutoff edges are below 200 nm. CN4H7SO3CF3 exhibits the largest birefringence (0.149 @ 546 nm, 0.395 @ 200 nm) in the deep-UV region among reported sulfates and sulfate derivatives. It reveals that the hydrogen bond can modulate the module ordering of the heteroleptic tetrahedra and planar π-conjugated cations, thus greatly enhancing the birefringence. Our study not only discovers new deep-UV birefringent materials but also provides an upgraded strategy for optimizing optical anisotropy to achieve efficient birefringence.

Abstract
Birefringent crystals play a crucial role in modulating and controlling the polarization of light in the optical communication and laser industries. Recently, adopting appropriate strategies to enhance the birefringence of crystals has become a prominent area of research focus. Herein, four UV antimony oxalate birefringent crystals, namely, K5Sb2(C2O4)5.5·3H2O, BaSb(C2O4)2.5·3H2O, Na4Sb2O(C2O4)4·6H2O, and Na3Sb(C2O4)2F2·2H2O, have been successfully synthesized. These compounds feature a similar zero-dimensional (0D) cluster structure and share the same functional groups, including π-conjugated [C2O4]2- groups and Sb3+-based distorted polyhedra with stereochemically active lone pairs (SCALPs). Interestingly, we achieved a stepwise increase in birefringence by precisely controlling the Sb3+/[C2O4]2- ratio, ultimately resulting in the compound Na3Sb(C2O4)2F2·2H2O exhibiting a large birefringence (0.21@546 nm). Additionally, we confirmed that the synergistic effects between the π-conjugated [C2O4]2- groups and the distorted polyhedra based on Sb3+ are responsible for the excellent optical properties observed in the reported compounds.

Abstract
Birefringent materials play an important role in laser techniques as an essential part of optical devices. Therefore, the exploration of high-performance birefringent materials has been a central focus of researchers. Herein, two tin(II) fluoride oxalates Na4Sn4(C2O4)3F6 and NaSnC2O4F·H2O were gained by the combination of birefringence-active groups of Sn2+ with stereochemically active lone pairs and planar π-conjugated [C2O4]2- groups. These groups assemble into low-dimensional structures of 0D [C2O4F4]6- clusters and 1D [SnC2O4F]∞- chains in Na4Sn4(C2O4)3F6, and double [Sn2(C2O4)2F2]∞2- chains in NaSnC2O4F·H2O, which gives rise to the large birefringence of 0.160@546 nm and 0.189@546 nm, respectively. Detailed structure-property analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that strong optical anisotropy can be induced by the rational arrangement of the Sn2+-polyhedra and [C2O4]2- groups.

Abstract
Low-dimensional crystalline materials have attracted much attention due to their special physical and chemical properties. Herein, two new oxalate chlorides, C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O and BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2, were synthesized. C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O presents the unique {[Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)]-}∞ zigzag chain, while BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2 shows a novel {[Cd(C2O4)1.5Cl]2-}∞ layer. They showed large measured band gaps, which were 3.76 and 4.53 eV, respectively, and the latter was the largest band gap in the A-M-C2O4-X (A = Monovalent cationic or alkaline earth metals, X = F, Cl, Br, I) family. They exhibit a large calculated birefringence of 0.075 and 0.096 at 1064 nm, respectively. This study promotes the exploration of synthesizing low-dimensional crystalline materials with balanced overall optical performances by a chemical scissors strategy.

Abstract
It is in great demand to discover new materials with large birefringence for the miniaturization of optical communication devices. In this work, a new one-dimensional hybrid halide perovskite, (C6 N10 H8 )Pb2 Br6 , is obtained successfully through structural design of dimension reduction from the notable three-dimensional halide perovskite CsPbBr3 . Remarkably, (C6 N10 H8 )Pb2 Br6 exhibits a significantly enhanced birefringence of ∆n = 0.42@550 nm, which is the largest among halide perovskites so far. Furthermore, its birefringence performance is robust in a wide temperature range of 300-440 K. Theoretical calculations reveal that this outstanding birefringence results from the synergistic effect of [PbBr6 ]4- octahedra and [C6 N10 H8 ]2+ cations with expanding π-delocation. According to further structural analyses, the structural dimension reduction cooperating with the increase of [PbBr6 ]4- octahedral distortion leads to the enhanced birefringence. This work uncovers the great promise of hybrid halide perovskites as robust birefringent crystals in future optical communication and would shed useful insights on the design and synthesis of new birefringent crystals.
