Sb4O3(TeO3)2(HSO4)(OH): An Antimony Tellurite Sulfate Exhibiting Large Optical Anisotropy Activated by Lone Pair Stereoactivity

NaK5La2(SO4)6: Enhanced Birefringence of Multiple-Alkali Metal Sulfate Systems via Rare Earth Metal-Centered Polyhedra

Polarization modulation of ultraviolet (UV) birefringent crystals is crucial for various applications. Here, we introduce distorted La-O polyhedra into alkali metal sulfates to synthesize a novel birefringent material with excellent UV transmission and birefringence. The incorporation of distorted La-O polyhedra significantly increases the birefringence to 0.0255 at 550 nm, surpassing that of many alkali metal sulfates while maintaining excellent UV transparency. The material exhibits excellent thermal stability up to 450 °C. Theoretical calculations show the connection between the crystal structure and optical functionality, confirming that the incorporation of La-O polyhedra enhances birefringence. This research provides novel insights into the discovery and design of outstanding birefringence materials.

A Noncentrosymmetric Metal-Free Borophosphate: Achieving a Large Birefringence and Excellent Stability by Covalent-Linkage

Organic-inorganic hybrid linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have received increasingly wide spread attention in recent years. Herein, the first hybrid noncentrosymmetric (NCS) borophosphate, (C5H6N)2B2O(HPO4)2 (4PBP), is rationally designed and synthesized by a covalent-linkage strategy. 4-pyridyl-boronic acid (4 PB) is considered as a bifunctional unit, which may effectively improve the optical properties and stability of the resultant material. On the one hand, 4 PB units are covalently linked with PO3(OH) groups via strong B-O-P connections, which significantly enhances the thermal stability of 4PBP (decomposition at 321, vs lower 200 °C of most of hybrid materials). On the other hand, the planar π-conjugated C5H6N units and their uniform layered arrangements represent large structural anisotropy and hyperpolarizability, achieving the largest birefringence (0.156 @ 546 nm) in the reported borophosphates and a second-harmonic generation response (0.7 × KDP). 4PBP also exhibits a wide transparency range (0.27-1.50 µm). This work not only provides a promising birefringent material, but also offers a practical covalent-attachment strategy for the rational design of new high-performance optical materials.

Hg4(Te2O5)(SO4): A Giant Birefringent Sulfate Crystal Triggered by a Highly Selective Cation

Sulfate crystals are often criticized for their low birefringence. The small anisotropic SO4 group is becoming the biggest bottleneck hindering the application of sulfates in optical functional materials. In this study, we report a new method to significantly enhance the birefringence of sulfates. The title compound increases the birefringence recording of sulfates to 0.542@546 nm, which is significantly larger than that of the commercial birefringent crystal of TiO2 (0.306@546.1 nm). At the infrared wavelength, the birefringence of Hg4(Te2O5)(SO4) can be up to 0.400@1064 nm, which is also much larger than the infrared birefringent crystal of YVO4 (0.209@1064 nm). In addition, it also has a wide transparency range, high thermal stability, and excellent environmental stability, making it a potential birefringent material. Hg4(Te2O5)(SO4) features a novel two-dimensional layered structure composed of [Hg4(Te2O5)]2+ layers separated by isolated (SO4)2- tetrahedra. This compound was designed by introducing a highly selective cation in a tellurite sulfate system. The low valence low coordination cations connect with tellurite groups only, making the sulfate isolated in the structure. The steric repulsive action of the isolated SO4 tetrahedra may regulate the linear and lone pair groups arranged in a way that favors large birefringence. This method can be proven by theoretical calculations. PAWED studies showed that the large birefringence originated from the synergistic effect of (Hg2O2)2-, (Te2O5)2-, and (SO4)2- units, with a contribution ratio of 42.17, 37.92, and 19.88%, respectively. Our work breaks the limitation of low birefringence in sulfates and opens up new possibilities for their application as birefringent crystals.

Two Short-Wave UV Antimony(III) Sulfates Exhibiting Large Birefringence

In the present work, we have successfully obtained two new UV antimony-based sulfates, NH4Sb(SO4)2 and Ca2Sb2O(SO4)4, by a conventional hydrothermal method. Interestingly, both compounds share similar structural building blocks, such as SbO4 seesaws and SO4 tetrahedra, yet they endow discrepant birefringence values measured at 546 nm with values of 0.150 and 0.114, respectively, owing to the different distortions of the SbO4 groups with SCALP electrons. Moreover, both compounds display large band gaps (4.32 and 4.43 eV, respectively), so they can be used as short-wavelength UV birefringent materials. Moreover, NH4Sb(SO4)2 is a noncentrosymmetric compound, showing a frequency doubling effect of 0.2 × KDP. Detailed structural analyses and calculations confirm the source of superior optical performance and the reasons for the different birefringence of the two compounds. This work provides ideas for the following discovery of antimony-based optical materials with excellent properties.

Synthesis and Properties of Cobalt/Nickel-Iron-Antimony(III, V)-Oxo Tartrate Cluster-Based Compounds

Two types of isostructural iron-cobalt/nickel-antimony-oxo tartrate cluster-based compounds, namely (H3O)(Me2NH2)[M(H2O)6]2[FeII2SbIII12(μ4-O)3(μ3-O)8(tta)6]·6H2O (M = Co (1); Ni (3)), H5/3[Co2.5FeII4/3FeIII3(H2O)13SbV1/3FeIII2/3(μ4-O)2(μ3-O)4SbIII6(μ3-O)2(tta)6]·2H2O (2) and H2[Ni2.25FeII1.5FeIII3(H2O)14SbV0.25FeIII0.75(μ4-O)2(μ3-O)4SbIII6(μ3-O)2(tta)6]·2H2O (4) (H4tta = tartaric acid) were synthesized via simple solvothermal reactions. All the clusters in the structures adopt sandwich configurations, that is, bilayer sandwich configuration in 1 and 3 and monolayer sandwich configuration in 2 and 4. Interestingly, the monolayer sandwiched compounds 2 and 4 represent rare examples of cluster-based compounds containing mixed-valence Sb(III, V), whose center of the intermediate layer is the co-occupied [FexSbV1-x]. This is different from that of previously reported sandwich-type antimony-oxo clusters in which the center position is either occupied by a transition metal ion or a Sb(V) alone. Thus, the discovery of title compounds 2 and 4 makes the evolution of center metal ion more complete, that is, from M, MxSbV1-x to SbV. All the title compounds were fully characterized, and the photocatalysis, proton conduction and magnetism of compounds 2 and 4 were studied.

PbTeB4O9: a lead tellurium borate with unprecedented fundamental building block [B4O10] and large birefringence

Herein, the first lead tellurium borate, PbTeB4O9, with an unprecedented fundamental building block [B4O10] was successfully synthesized. The near-parallel alignment of [B4O10] groups and [TeO3] polyhedra resulted in a high birefringence (0.099@1064 nm). The structure-property relationship was discussed by using the first-principles calculations.

Promoting C-F bond activation via proton donor for CF4 decomposition

Tetrafluoromethane (CF4), the simplest perfluorocarbons, is a permanently potent greenhouse gas due to its powerful infrared radiation adsorption capacity. The highly symmetric and robust C-F bond structure makes its activation a great challenge. Herein, we presented an innovated approach that efficiently activates C-F bond utilizing protonated sulfate (-HSO4) modified Al2O3@ZrO2 (S-Al2O3@ZrO2) catalyst, resulting in highly efficient CF4 decomposition. By combining in situ infrared spectroscopy tests and density function theory simulations, we demonstrate that the introduced -HSO4 proton donor has a stronger interaction on the C-F bond than the hydroxyl (-OH) proton donor, which can effectively stretch the C-F bond for its activation. Consequently, the obtained S-Al2O3@ZrO2 catalyst achieved a stable 100% CF4 decomposition at a record low temperature of 580 °C with a turnover frequency value of ~8.3 times higher than the Al2O3@ZrO2 catalyst without -HSO4 modification, outperforming the previously reported results. This work paves a new way for achieving efficient C-F bond activation to decompose CF4 at a low temperature.

YSO4F·H2O: A Deep-Ultraviolet Birefringent Rare-Earth Sulfate Fluoride with Enhanced Birefringence Induced by Fluorinated Y-Centered Polyhedra

Birefringent crystals can modulate and detect the polarization of light and are important optical functional materials. The birefringence is positively correlated to the anisotropy of the structure. By partially substituting sulfate anion with large electronegative fluorine in the parent compound Y2(SO4)3·8H2O, a new fluorinated rare-earth sulfate YSO4F·H2O with enhanced anisotropy was achieved. YSO4F·H2O features a dense 3D structure constructed by the polarizable [YOF] polyhedra and [SO4] tetrahedra. The diffuse reflectance spectrum reveals that it has a short UV absorption edge of below 200 nm. The substitution of the F- ion enhances the optical anisotropy, making the material exhibit an enhanced birefringence (0.0357 at 546 nm), which is 5.1 times that of the parent compound and is also larger than most deep-UV birefringent sulfates. It is expected that this work may shed useful insights in the exploration of deep-UV birefringent materials with enhanced optical performances..

Three new aluminoborates: from 1D tube to 3D framework

Three new aluminoborates (ABOs) KCs[Al{B5O9(OH)}{BO(OH)2} (1), K0.5Cs[Al{B5O10}1/2{BO2(OH)}] (2), and Cs1.5[Al{B5O10}1/2{BO2(OH)}] (3) have been made under solvothermal conditions. 1 features a 1D tube constructed by the alternation of [B5O9(OH)]4- clusters and AlO4 units, onto which the [BO(OH)2]- triangles are grafted. To further construct higher dimensional structures based on the structure 1, solvents were adjusted for high basicity, resulting in the formations of the 3D ABO frameworks 2 and 3. 2 and 3 are isostructural and built from [B5O10]5- clusters, AlO4 tetrahedra and [BO2(OH)]2- triangles, in which [B5O10]5- clusters are bridged by AlO4 tetrahedra to produce a 2D ABO layer with 14-membered ring (MR) windows, and the [BO2(OH)]2- triangles act as the linkers to bridge the adjacent ABO layers to form 3D ABO frameworks containing eight types of channels. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicate that 1, 2, and 3 have potential applications in deep ultraviolet (DUV) regions.
