Investigation of Praseodymium Fluorides: A Combined Matrix-Isolation and Quantum-Chemical Study

Is pentavalent Pr(V) feasible in solid CsPrF6?

The oxidation state (OS) holds significant importance in the field of chemistry and serves as a crucial parameter for tracking electrons. Lanthanide (Ln) elements predominately exhibit a +III oxidation state, with a few elements such as Ce, Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy able to achieve a +IV oxidation state. Over the past century, numerous attempts to synthesize Pr(V) have been made without success until recent reports on Pr(V) oxides and nitride-oxide in the gas phase expanded our understanding of Ln elements. However, the formation of Pr(V) in the condensed phase remains an open question. In this work, based on advanced quantum chemical investigations, we predict that formation of the solid-state CsPrVF6 from Pr(III) and Pr(IV) complexes is exothermic, indicating that CsPrVF6 is stable. The crystal structure comprises [PrF6]- octahedral clusters occupying the interstitial spaces of Cs cations. Electronic structure analysis reveals that the CsPrF6 crystal has a closed-shell structure and that Pr reaches its highest oxidation state of +V. The results indicate that the existence of Pr(V) in solid-state Ln fluorides is not impossible, which enriches our understanding of high-valence Ln compounds.

Orthorhombic-to-Hexagonal Phase Transition of REF3 (RE = Sm to Lu and Y) under High Pressure

For the famous functional REF₃ family, there exist two typical structures, that is, orthorhombic phase and hexagonal phase. In the present work, high pressure behaviors of the orthorhombic phase REF₃ (RE = Sm to Lu and Y) were investigated by experimental methods and first-principles calculations. The pressure-induced phase transitions of GdF₃, TbF₃, YbF_3, and LuF₃ were studied by using in situ photoluminescence measurements in the diamond anvil cell. At room temperature, all these four compounds follow the phase transition route from orthorhombic to hexagonal phase at 5.5-20.6 GPa. The pressure ranges of phase transition are 5.5-9.3, 8.4-11.9, 13.5-20.3, and 14.8-20.6 GPa for GdF₃, TbF₃, YbF_3, and LuF₃, respectively. In combination with first-principles calculations, we infer that all orthorhombic REF₃ members from Sm-Lu and Y obey the same orthorhombic-to-hexagonal phase transition rules under high pressures. For lanthanide trifluorides, the transition pressures increase as zero pressure volumes of REF₃ in the orthorhombic phase become smaller. As the calculation results show, this is because the difference in value of energy from the two structures is larger. This work not only provides precise structural change but also benefits the understanding of two typical structures for rare-earth trifluorides, which may play a significant role in the applications of REF₃.

Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of a Pr4+ imidophosphorane complex and the redox chemistry of Nd3+ and Dy3+ complexes

The molecular tetravalent oxidation state for praseodymium is observed in solution via oxidation of the anionic trivalent precursor [K][Pr³⁺(NP(1,2-bis-^tBu-diamidoethane)(NEt₂))₄] (1-Pr(NP*)) with AgI at -35 °C. The Pr⁴⁺ complex is characterized in solution via cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy, and EPR spectroscopy. Electrochemical analyses of [K][Ln³⁺(NP(1,2-bis-^tBu-diamidoethane)(NEt₂))₄] (Ln = Nd and Dy) by cyclic voltammetry are reported and, in conjunction with theoretical modeling of electronic structure and oxidation potential, are indicative of principal ligand oxidations in contrast to the metal-centered oxidation observed for 1-Pr(NP*). The identification of a tetravalent praseodymium complex in in situ UV-vis and EPR experiments is further validated by theoretical modeling of the redox chemistry and the UV-vis spectrum. The latter study was performed by extended multistate pair-density functional theory (XMS-PDFT) and implicates a multiconfigurational ground state for the tetravalent praseodymium complex.

Lanthanide Complexes Containing a Terminal Ln═O Oxo Bond: Revealing Higher Stability of Tetravalent Praseodymium versus Terbium

We report on the reactivity of gas-phase lanthanide-oxide nitrate complexes, [Ln(O)(NO₃)₃]^- (denoted LnO²⁺), produced via elimination of NO₂^• from trivalent [Ln^III(NO₃)₄]^- (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy). These complexes feature a Ln^III-O^• oxyl, a Ln^IV═O oxo, or an intermediate Ln^III/IV oxyl/oxo bond, depending on the accessibility of the tetravalent Ln^IV state. Hydrogen atom abstraction reactivity of the LnO²⁺ complexes to form unambiguously trivalent [Ln^III(OH)(NO₃)₃]^- reveals the nature of the oxide bond. The result of slower reactivity of PrO²⁺ versus TbO²⁺ is considered to indicate higher stability of the tetravalent praseodymium-oxo, Pr^IV═O, versus Tb^IV═O. This is the first report of Pr^IV as more stable than Tb^IV, which is discussed with respect to ionization potentials, standard electrode potentials, atomic promotion energies, and oxo bond covalency via 4f- and/or 5d-orbital participation.

Investigation of Molecular Iridium Fluorides IrFn (n=1-6): A Combined Matrix-Isolation and Quantum-Chemical Study

The photo-initiated defluorination of iridium hexafluoride (IrF6 ) was investigated in neon and argon matrices at 6 K, and their photoproducts are characterized by IR and UV-vis spectroscopies as well as quantum-chemical calculations. The primary photoproducts obtained after irradiation with λ=365 nm are iridium pentafluoride (IrF5 ) and iridium trifluoride (IrF3 ), while longer irradiation of the same matrix with λ=278 nm produced iridium tetrafluoride (IrF4 ) and iridium difluoride (IrF2 ) by Ir-F bond cleavage or F2 elimination. In addition, IrF5 can be reversed to IrF6 by adding a F atom when exposed to blue-light (λ=470 nm) irradiation. Laser irradiation (λ=266 nm) of IrF4 also generated IrF6 , IrF5 , IrF3 and IrF2 . Alternatively, molecular binary iridium fluorides IrFn (n=1-6) were produced by co-deposition of laser-ablated iridium atoms with elemental fluorine in excess neon and argon matrices under cryogenic conditions. Computational studies up to scalar relativistic CCSD(T)/triple-ζ level and two-component quasirelativistic DFT computations including spin-orbit coupling effects supported the formation of these products and provided detailed insights into their molecular structures by their characteristic Ir-F stretching bands. Compared to the Jahn-Teller effect, the influence of spin-orbit coupling dominates in IrF5 , leading to a triplet ground state with C4v symmetry, which was spectroscopically detected in solid argon and neon matrices.

Dicerium letterbox-shaped tetraphenolates: f-block complexes designed for two-electron chemistry

Rare examples of molecular, dinuclear CeIII and PrIII complexes with robust Ln-coordination are accessible by use of the tetraphenolate pTP as a supporting, chelating O-donor ligand platform, pTP = [{2-(OC6H2R2-2,4)2CH}-C6H4-1,4]4- that favours the higher formal oxidation states accessible to rare earths. Two classes of complexes have been made from the platforms; one metallacyclic 2 + 2 [Ln2(pTP)2] framework with a rigid, letterbox-shaped geometry and [Ln(aryloxide)4] core, and one more flexible [(LnX)2(pTP)] with one rare earth ion at either end of the platform. The LnIII letterbox complexes have two K+ counter-cations, one of which sits inside the letterbox, binding the two central arenes of the platform sufficiently strongly that it cannot be displaced by solvent molecules (THF and pyridine) or crown ethers. Oxidation of the CeIII lettterboxes is facile and forms the unusual neutral molecular (CeIV)2 letterbox in which the CeIV reduction potential is -1.83 V vs. Fc/Fc+. The electronic structure of the Ce(iii/iv) complexes was investigated using HERFD-XAS (high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy).

The chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanides: Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy

The thermochemistry, descriptive chemistry, spectroscopy, and physical properties of the tetravalent lanthanides (Pr, Nd, Tb and Dy) in extended phases, gas phase, solution, and as isolable molecular complexes are presented.

Pentavalent lanthanide nitride-oxides: NPrO and NPrO- complexes with N≡Pr triple bonds

The neutral molecule NPrO and its anion NPrO^- are produced via co-condensation of laser-ablated praseodymium atoms with nitric oxide in a solid neon matrix. Combined infrared spectroscopy and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations confirm that both species are pentavalent praseodymium nitride-oxides with linear structures that contain Pr≡N triple bonds and Pr=O double bonds. Electronic structure studies show that the neutral NPrO molecule features a 4f⁰ electron configuration and a Pr(v) oxidation state similar to that of the isoelectronic PrO₂⁺ ion, while its NPrO^- anion possesses a 4f¹ electron configuration and a Pr(iv) oxidation state. The neutral NPrO molecule is thus a rare lanthanide nitride-oxide species with a Pr(v) oxidation state, which follows the recent identification of the first Pr(v) oxidation state in the PrO₂⁺ and PrO₄ complexes (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2016, 55, 6896). This finding indicates that lanthanide compounds with oxidation states of higher than +IV are richer in chemistry than previously recognized.

Pentavalent Lanthanide Compounds: Formation and Characterization of Praseodymium(V) Oxides

The chemistry of lanthanides (Ln=La-Lu) is dominated by the low-valent +3 or +2 oxidation state because of the chemical inertness of the valence 4f electrons. The highest known oxidation state of the whole lanthanide series is +4 for Ce, Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy. We report the formation of the lanthanide oxide species PrO4 and PrO2 (+) complexes in the gas phase and in a solid noble-gas matrix. Combined infrared spectroscopic and advanced quantum chemistry studies show that these species have the unprecedented Pr(V) oxidation state, thus demonstrating that the pentavalent state is viable for lanthanide elements in a suitable coordination environment.

Extending the Row of Lanthanide Tetrafluorides: A Combined Matrix-Isolation and Quantum-Chemical Study

Only the neutral tetrafluorides of Ce, Pr, and Tb as well as the [LnF7 ](3-) anions of Dy and Nd, with the metal in the +IV oxidation state, have been previously reported. We report our attempts to extend the row of neutral lanthanide tetrafluorides through the reaction of laser-ablated metal atoms with fluorine and their stabilization and characterization by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy. In addition to the above three tetrafluorides, we found two new tetrafluorides, (3) NdF4 and (7) DyF4 , both of which are in the +IV oxidation state, which extends this lanthanide oxidation state to two new metals. Our experimental results are supported by quantum-chemical calculations and the role of the lanthanide oxidation state is discussed for both the LnF4 and [LnF4 ](-) species. Most of the LnF4 species are predicted to be in the +IV oxidation state and all of the [LnF4 ](-) anions are predicted to be in the +III oxidation state. The LnF4 species are predicted to be strong oxidizing agents and the LnF3 species are predicted to be moderate to strong Lewis acids.
