Symmetrically Related Construction and Optical Properties of Two Noncentrosymmetric 3D Iodides of d(10) Cation (Cu(+), Ag(+)) Based on the N-Benzylpyridinium and Its Supramolecular Interactions

A New 3D Iodoargentate Hybrid: Structure, Optical/Photoelectric Performance and Theoretical Research

The explorations of new three-dimensional (3D) microporous metal halides, especially the iodoargentate-based hybrids, and understanding of their structure-activity relationships are still quite essential but full of great challenges. Herein, with the aromatic 4,4'-dpa (4,4'-dpa = 4,4'-dipyridylamine) ligands as the structural directing agents, we solvothermal synthesized and structurally characterized a novel member of microporous iodoargentate family, namely [H2-4,4'-dpa]Ag6I8 (1). Compound 1 possesses a unique and complicated 3D [Ag6I8]n2n- anionic architecture that was built up from the unusual hexameric [Ag6I13] secondary building units (SBUs). Research on optical properties indicated that compound 1 exhibited semiconductor behavior, with an optical band gap of 2.50 eV. Under the alternate irradiation of light, prominent photoelectric switching abilities could be achieved by compound [H2-4,4'-dpa]Ag6I8, whose photocurrent densities (0.37 μA·cm-2 for visible light and 1.23 μA·cm-2 for full-spectrum) compared well with or exceeded those of some high-performance halide counterparts. Further theoretical calculations revealed that the relatively dispersed conduction bands (CBs) structures in compound 1 induced higher electron mobilities, which may be responsible for its good photoelectricity. Presented in this work also comprised the analyses of Hirshfeld surface, powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), thermogravimetric measurement, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDX) along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Conjugated-Polypyridine-Derivative-Derived Semiconductive Iodoplumbates with Tunable Architectures and Efficient Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Property

By mediation of the pH values, three novel inorganic-organic iodoplumbate hybrids, [Me₃TPT][Pb₃I₉] [1; Me₃TPT = trimethyl-2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine], [Me₃TPT]₂[Pb₉I₂₄] (2), and [Me₃TPT]₂[Pb₁₉I₄₄] (3), have been achieved under solvothermal conditions. The large conjugated in situ N-alkylation polypyridine derivatives act as structure-directing agents and electron acceptors, making the materials feature adjustable structural variations with 0D, 1D, and 2D structures and a potential semiconductive performance with narrow energy gaps (1.72, 1.80, and 1.78 eV for 1-3, respectively), which result in their efficient photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation. Theoretical calculation reveals that the conjugated organic moieties greatly contribute to the conduction band, leading to narrow band gaps. It is expected that the work will contribute to the exploitation of novel semiconducting halometallates by employing conjugated organic species as structure-directing agents.

Transition-Metal-Complex-Directed Synthesis of Hybrid Iodoargentates with Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Structural Transformation and Photocatalytic Properties

We synthesized and characterized three types of isostructural iodoargentates, [TM(phen)₃]Ag₂I₄·3DMF (TM = Co (1), Ni (2), Zn (3)), [TM(phen)₃]Ag₃I₅·DMF (TM = Co (4), Ni (5), Zn (6)), and [TM(phen)₃]₂Ag₈I₁₂·7DMF (TM = Co (7), Ni (8), Zn (9)) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, DMF = dimethylformamide) using transition-metal (TM) complexes as the structure-directing agents. Compounds 1-3 and compounds 4-6 feature zero-dimensional anionic [Ag₄I₈]^4- and [Ag₆I₁₀]^4- clusters, respectively. All of the [TM(phen)₃]²⁺ cations in compounds 1-6 are arranged into a two-dimensional (2D) (6,3) net layer. Interestingly, compounds 1-3 are kinetically unstable in the mother solution, and they can be converted to compounds 4-6 via irreversible single-crystal to single-crystal transformation processes, respectively, with distinct changes in the crystal morphology and structure. Compounds 7-9 feature one-dimensional (1D) zigzag chains constructed from [Ag₈I₁₂]^4- units. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance measurements demonstrate that compounds 1-9 possess the characteristics of semiconductors with band gaps of 2.58-2.71 eV and visible-light-irradiation-induced photocatalytic activities. Especially, compound 3 possesses higher photocatalytic degradation activity toward crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine B (RhB) in comparison to P25 under identical conditions. Moreover, the mechanism study reveals that the TM complex cations make a great contribution to the photocatalytic activity.

Preparation and Analyses of the Multifunctional Properties of 2D and 3D MOFs Constructed from Copper(I) Halides and Hexamethylenetetramine

In this article, two two-dimensional and three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks are synthesized by the self-assembly of copper(I) halide and the hexamethylenetetramine (hmt) ligand. Compound 1 is a two-dimensional metal-organic framework composed of a pyramidal Cu₄I₅ cluster and hexamethylenetetramine, in which hmt-bridged Cu clusters form a two-dimensional (4,4)-connected net with a point symbol of (4⁴·6²) (4⁴·6²). Compound 2 is a homochiral three-dimensional metal-organic framework material generated through an unusual spontaneous crystallization from achiral precursors. The two compounds were characterized by a series of analyses such as infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Both of them exhibit unexpected stability under a wide range of conditions of acid and base. In addition, the fluorescence intensity changes regularly under acid-base conditions. Stokes shift shows a good linear relationship with -log [H⁺], which makes them become promising acid-base sensors. Compounds 1 and 2 also display selective adsorption and a significant degradation effect on the organic dye methylene blue. In addition, the fluorescence study indicated that compound 2 could be used as a sensor to detect Cr³⁺.

Organic cation directed one-dimensional cuprous halide compounds: syntheses, crystal structures and photoluminescence properties

In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have emerged as a highly promising class of semiconducting light emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their fascinating photoluminescence properties. Here, by specifically selecting different organic cations as templates, a series of new hybrid cuprous halides have been solvothermally prepared, namely [Me-Py]CuI₂ (1), [(Me)₂-DABCO]Cu₂I₄ (2), [Me-MePy]Cu₂I₃ (3), and [H₂DABCO]Cu₃X₅ (X = I (4) and Br (5)). These hybrid cuprous halides feature one-dimensional (1D) [CuI₂]^-, [Cu₂I₃]^- and [Cu₃X₅]^2- (X = Br, I) chains surrounded and charge-balanced by organic cations. Under UV photoexcitation, these hybrid cuprous halides exhibit strong tunable photoluminescence from cyan (480 nm) to red (675 nm) emissions with large Stokes shifts (345 nm). The intrinsic nature of PL emissions is also investigated based on temperature-dependent PL emission, lifetime, photoluminescence quantum efficiencies, etc.

Hybrid Supramolecules for Azolium-Linked Cyclophane Immobilization and Conformation Study: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photocatalytic Degradation

In this paper, one imidazole macrocyclic divalent cation with a flexible configuration was chosen with the aim of the immobilization of its conformation. Six novel organic-inorganic hybrid supramolecules {([syn/anti-did](CdI₄)(C₂H₃N)} (1), {([syn/anti-did](HgI₄)(C₂H₃N)} (2), {([syn/syn-did](Pb₂I₈)(PbI₅)} (3), {([syn/syn-did](Bi₂I₈)(BiI₅)} (4), {([syn/syn-did](Ag₄Br₆)} _n (5), and {([syn/anti-did](Ag₂I₄)} (6) [did²⁺ = (1²z, 5²z)-1¹H, 5¹H-1, 5(1, 3)-diimidazol-3-iuma-3, 7(1, 2)-dibenzenacyclooctaphane-1³, 5³-diium] have been synthesized through the self-assembly reaction of did²⁺ with different metals under solvothermal reaction. These compounds have been unambiguously confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, IR, thermogravimetric and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Crystallographic analysis shows that the anions of compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural with mononuclear anion structure, the anions of compounds 3, 4, and 6 are of binuclear structure, and compound 5 anion is a one-dimensional anionic chain structure. Imidazole cyclophanes of organic cations may exist in a syn/syn-conformation in 3-5 or syn/anti conformation in 1, 2, 6, but tilting angles in compounds 1-6 were different. This article described the photocatalytic degradation of organic dye in waste water and the optical band gap of compounds 1-6. The calculated semiconductor band gap of compounds 1-6 is smaller than that of TiO₂, so compounds 1-6 have semiconductor properties. Compound 1 has the smallest band gap value, and the photocatalytic performance is the best.

Copper(i)-polymers and their photoluminescence thermochromism properties

Under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions, four organic bidentate bridging N,N'-donor ligands 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)propane (L1), 4,4'-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1'-biphenyl (L2), 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L3) and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoxaline (L4) were employed to react with CuBr/CuI, generating four 2-D layered copper(i)-polymer coordination polymer materials [Cu2Br2(L1)] 1, [CuI(L2)] 2, [CuI(L3)] 3 and [CuI(L4)0.5] 4. In 1-4, different Cu-X motifs are found: a cubic Cu4Br4 core in 1; a castellated Cu-I single chain in 2; a rhombic Cu2I2 core in 3; and a staircase-like Cu-I double chain in 4. The 2-D layer networks of 1-3 can all be simplified into a simple 44 topology (planar for 1 and 3; wave-like for 2), while the 2-D layer network of 4 has a 63 topology. The photoluminescence behaviors of 1-4 under a UV lamp suggest that 1 and 2 possess fluorescence thermochromism properties. Under the UV lamp, with the decrease in temperature, (i) 1 exhibits a yellow-to-red emission; (ii) 2 exhibits a yellow-to-green emission; (iii) 3 always emits green light; and (iv) 4 never emits light. These are further confirmed by their emission spectra. From 297 K to 77 K, the emission of 1 exhibits a large red shift from 561 nm to 623 nm; the emission of 2 exhibits a large blue shift from 571 nm to 515 nm; only a minor red shift is observed for the emission of 3; and no peaks appear in the emission spectra of 4. The crystal data of 1 and 2 at different temperatures have been collected for revealing the origination of their fluorescence thermochromism properties. Based on the above investigations, the effect of the rigidity/flexibility of the organic ligand on the fluorescence thermochromism properties of copper(i)-polymer coordination polymer materials is discussed. The quantum yields at 297 K and the photoluminescence lifetimes at 297 K and 77 K for 1-3 were also measured for better understanding their photoluminescence properties.

An unusual cuprous iodide polymer incorporating I-, I2 and I3- structural units

A novel cuprous iodide polymer [Cu2(μ4-L)(μ2-I-)(I2)(I3-)]n·nI2 (1, L = 1-tetrazole-4-imidazole-benzene) has been hydrothermally synthesized. 1 contains a 1-D chain [Cu2(μ4-L)(μ2-I-)(I2)(I3-)]n and free I2 molecules, which are interconnected by weak II interactions to form an unprecedented 3-D cuprous polyiodide network containing rare 1-D [(I-)·2I2·(I3)-]n polyiodide ribbons. 1 shows luminescence and photoelectronic properties, and its theoretical band structure was also studied.

Alkyl Pyridinium Iodocuprate(I) Clusters: Structural Types and Charge Transfer Behavior

The reaction of copper(I) iodide (CuI) and N-alkyl pyridinium (RPy⁺, R = H, Me, Et, n-propyl = Pr, n-butyl = Bu, n-pentyl = Pn, and n-hexyl = Hx) or N-butyl-3-substituted pyridinium (N-Bu-3-PyX⁺, X = I, Br, Cl, CN, and OMe) iodide salts yielded pyridinium iodocuprate(I) salts. Crystal structures of iodocuprate ions coupled with RPy⁺ include {Cu₃I₆ ^3-} _n (R = H), {Cu₂I₃ ^-} _n (R = Me), {Cu₃I₄ ^-} _n (R = Et), {Cu₆I₈ ^2-} _n (R = Pr), and {Cu₅I₇ ^2-} _n (R = Bu, Pn, Hx). The [N-Bu-3-PyX]⁺ ions were typically paired with the 1-D chain {Cu₅I₇ ^2-} _n . Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy performed on the [N-Bu-3-PyX]⁺ iodocuprate salts revealed that increasing the electron withdrawing capacity of the [N-Bu-3-PyX]⁺ system reduced the absorption edge of the iodocuprate salt. Variable temperature emission spectra of several [N-Bu-3-PyX]⁺ compounds revealed two emission peaks, one consistent with a cluster-centered halide to metal charge transfer and the other consistent with an intermolecular mixed halide/metal charge transfer to the organic cation. The emission intensity and emission wavelength of the mixed halide/metal to cation charge transfer depends on the organic cation substitution.

New photoluminescent iodoargentates with bisimidazole derivatives as countercations

In this article, three bisimidazole derivatives (1,4-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)butane, L1; 4,4′-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1′-biphenyl, L2′; and 1,3-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)propane, L3) were employed to solvothermally react with AgI in an acidic environment, creating three new 1-D chained iodoargentates [H(L1)][Ag₅I₆]·DMF (DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide) 1, [L2][Ag₃I₅] (L2²⁺ = 4,4′-di(1H-imidazol-1-ium)-1,1′-biphenyl) 2, and [H₂(L3)][Ag₂I₄] 3. L2²⁺ in 2 originated from the in situ N-alkylation of L2′ with the CH₃OH solvent. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that (i) in 1, Ag⁺ and I⁻ aggregate to form a 1-D tube-like iodoargentate, which exhibits the same topology as the carbon tube; (ii) the chain structure of the iodoargentate in 2 is based on a kind of trinuclear Ag–I cluster, which can be viewed as a segment of the classical cubic M₄I₄ cluster; (iii) the chain structure of the iodoargentate in 3 is simple, which can be described as a linear arrangement of the AgI₄ tetrahedra by sharing edges. The photoluminescence analysis reveals that at 77 K, (i) 1 and 2 emit strong yellow light with ms-grade photoluminescence lifetimes (5.460 ms for 1, 6.931 ms for 2); (ii) 3 possesses photochromic luminescence properties. Upon excitation at 254 nm, it emits blue-green light, whereas upon excitation at 365 nm, it emits yellow light.

Three bisimidazole-based chained iodoargentates were solvothermally synthesized, and their photoluminescent behaviors at different temperatures were investigated. Of those, 3 has been found to possess photochromic luminescence properties.
