Spin Transition and Structural Transformation in a Mononuclear Cobalt(II) Complex

Homoleptic octahedral CoII complexes as precatalysts for regioselective hydroboration of alkenes with high turnover frequencies

Homoleptic complexes adopting octahedral coordination modes are usually less active in catalysis due to the saturated coordination around metal centers that prevents substrate activation in a catalytic event. In this work, we demonstrated that a homoleptic octahedral cobalt complex (1) of 4'-pyridyl-2,2';6',2''-terpyridine that experienced monoprotonation at the non-coordinating pyridyl moiety upon crystallization could serve as a highly efficient precatalyst for the hydroboration of styrene derivatives with Markovnikov selectivity. The solid-state structure of this precatalyst along with relevant homoleptic CoII and FeII complexes has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. In the solid state, 1 features one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded chains that are further stacked by interchain π⋯π interactions. The newly synthesized complexes (1-3) along with several known analogues (4-6) were examined as precatalysts for the hydroboration of alkenes. The best-performing system, 1/KOtBu was found to promote Markovnikov hydroboration of substituted styrenes with high turnover frequencies (TOFs) up to ∼47 000 h-1, comparable to the most efficient polymeric catalyst [Co(pytpy)Cl2]n reported to date. Although some limitations in substrate scope as well as functional group tolerance exist, the catalyst shows good promise for several relevant hydrofunctionaliation reactions.

Hysteretic Spin Crossover with High Transition Temperatures in Two Cobalt(II) Complexes

Cooperative spin crossover transitions with thermal hysteresis loops are rarely observed in cobalt(II) complexes. Herein, two new mononuclear cobalt(II) complexes with hysteretic spin crossover at relatively high temperatures (from 320 to 400 K), namely, [Co(terpy-CH2OH)2]·X2 (terpy-CH2OH = 4'-(hydroxymethyl)-2,2';6',2″-terpyridine, X = SCN-(1) and SeCN- (2)), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Both compounds are mononuclear CoII complexes with two chelating terpy-CH2OH ligands. Magnetic measurements revealed the existence of the hysteretic SCO transitions for both complexes. For compound 1, a one-step transition with T1/2↑= 334.5 K was observed upon heating, while a two-step transition is observed upon cooling with T1/2↓(1) = 329.3 K and T1/2↓(2) = 324.1 K (at a temperature sweep rate of 5 K/min). As for compound 2, a hysteresis loop with a width of 5 K (T1/2↓ = 391.6 K and T1/2↑ = 396.6 K, at a sweep rate of 5 K/min) can be observed. Thanks to the absence of the crystallized lattice solvents, their single crystals are stable enough at high temperatures for the structure determination at both spin states, which reveals that the hysteretic SCO transitions in both complexes originate from the crystallographic phase transitions involving a thermally induced order-disorder transition of the dangling -CH2OH groups in the ligand. This work shows that the modification of the terpy ligand has an important effect on the magnetic properties of the resulting cobalt(II) complexes.

Spin transition triggered by desorption of crystal solvents for a two-dimensional cobalt(ii) complex with hydrogen bonding

[Co(5tpybNOH)₂](BPh₄)₂ (1; 5tpybNOH = 5,5''-bis(N-tert-butyl hydroxylamino)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) has a two-dimensional (2D) structure through a hydrogen bond between the NOH sites, as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The crystal solvents were desorbed above 300 K as shown by thermal analyses and powder X-ray crystallography. The removal of the crystal solvents allowed irreversible structural changes and a spin transition of the Co centre from S = 1/2 to 3/2.

Insertion of single-ion magnets based on mononuclear Co(II) complexes into ferromagnetic oxalate-based networks

The 1 : 2 and 1 : 1 Co(ii) complexes of the L ligand (L = 6-(3,5-diamino-2,4,6-triazinyl)2,2'-bipyridine) with formulas [CoII(L)2](ClO4)2·0.5MeCN·Et2O (1) and [CoII(L)(CH3CN)2(H2O)](ClO4)2·MeCN (2) have been prepared. The structural and magnetic characterization of the two compounds shows that they contain octahedral high-spin Co(ii) and present a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization. 1 has been inserted into a bimetallic oxalate-based network leading to a novel achiral 3D compound of formula [CoII(L)2][MnIICrIII(ox)3]2·(solvate) (3) exhibiting ferromagnetic ordering below 4.6 K. EPR measurements suggest a weak magnetic coupling between the two sublattices.

Construction of SCO-Active Fe(II) Mononuclear Complexes from the Thio-pybox Ligand

The development of new spin-crossover complexes provides novel promising switching materials with significant potential at the molecular level. Ter-imine-type molecules represent one of the important classes of ligands in creating SCO-active complexes. Herein we report a family of mononuclear Fe(II) SCO-active compounds constructed from a new type of ter-imine ligand named the thio-pybox ligand (2,6-bis(4,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)pyridine, L¹). Through the variation of counteranions, some cases display complete SCO and with T_1/2 near ambient temperature. Among them, annealed [Fe^II(L¹)₂](ClO₄)₂ [1(ClO₄)] shows T_1/2↓ and T_1/2↑ as 319 and 349 K, respectively. The wide thermal hysteresis of ΔT = 30 K originated from the weak interaction between complex cations and counteranions in the crystal lattice. Impressively, its high-spin population can be increased considerably by annealing at high temperature. The metastable high-spin phase is stable in the successive magnetic measurements and would gradually relax to its initial state with high population of low-spin configuration at ambient temperature. In acetonitrile-diluted solution, 1(ClO₄) still maintains SCO with an estimated T_1/2 at 240 K. Differential scanning calorimetry discloses the structural phase at around 355 K in the first heating process and the increase in the high-spin population concomitant with annealing was also corroborated by ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer measurements. Additionally, the influences on SCO by counteranion and ligand structure are investigated, which show that the fine tuning of complex structures can affect the behavior of the spin state significantly. Finally, magneto-structural correlation studies were performed on the structures of 1(ClO₄) and its oxygen analogue at multiple temperatures. The analyses of some structural parameters, including terminal N···N donor separation, bite angle, patulous angle, and the root mean squared deviation indicate that the replacement of the oxygen atom with a sulfur atom can effectively improve the flexibility and release the steric strain and thus tune the SCO toward ambient temperature. Our research demonstrates the rational design of the ligand can lead to new SCO-active compounds with high performance.

Slow Magnetic Relaxation Triggered by a Structural Phase Transition in Long-Chain-Alkylated Cobalt(II) Single-Ion Magnets

The behavior of single-ion magnets (SIMs) that reflects large distortions of their coordination environments caused by the packing of long alkyl chains for two Co(II) complexes of the type [Co(C _n-terpy)₂](BF₄)₂ (C _n-terpy = 4'-alkoxy-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine; n = 10 (1), 16 (2)) is reported. 1·2MeOH, which features a highly distorted octahedral high-spin Co(II) center, exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation under an applied dc field of 1000 Oe. Further detailed analysis of the relaxation process indicated the prevalence of the Raman process at low temperature. Surprisingly, 2 shows a reverse spin transition (rST) and also exhibits remarkable field-induced SIM behavior, revealing the presence of magnetic anisotropy for this high-spin Co(II) species that is triggered by a structural phase transition. We present here the first examples of the coexistence of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation and rST associated with structural phase transitions involving long-alkyl-chain conformational changes from gauche to anti. These results indicate the prospect of inducing SIM properties in other distorted high-spin Co(II) species bearing long alkyl chains.

Reversible on-off switching of both spin crossover and single-molecule magnet behaviours via a crystal-to-crystal transformation

The on-off switching of spin-crossover (SCO) and single-molecule magnetism (SMM) remains highly attractive, especially if it involves dynamic crystal-to-crystal transformation. Herein we report the first molecule, a mononuclear cobalt(ii) complex, that exhibits on-off switching between SCO and SMM reversibly during crystal-to-crystal transformation. Subtle structural transformation triggered by a simple dehydration-rehydration process induces significant geometrical changes of the CoII center and modification of the supramolecular interactions and switches its colour and magnetic properties (dark red/SCO-on/SMM-off ↔ orange/SCO-off/SMM-on). This work suggests that modification of the weak supramolecular interactions could be very effective in achieving switchable materials involving both SCO and SMM properties.

Copper(ii) complexes of functionalized 2,2':6',2''-terpyridines and 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine: structure, spectroscopy, cytotoxicity and catalytic activity

Six new copper(ii) complexes with 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (4'-Rⁿ-terpy) [1 (R¹ = furan-2-yl), 2 (R² = thiophen-2-yl), and 3 (R³ = 1-methyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)] and 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine derivatives (Rⁿ-dtpy) [4 (R¹), 5 (R²), and 6 (R³)] have been synthesized by a reaction between copper(ii) chloride and the corresponding ligand. The complexes have been characterized by UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, and their structures have been determined by X-ray analysis. The antiproliferative potential of copper(ii) complexes of 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine derivatives towards human colorectal (HCT116) and ovarian (A2780) carcinoma as well as towards lung (A549) and breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7) cell lines was examined. Complex 1 and complex 6 were found to have the highest antiproliferative effect on A2780 ovarian carcinoma cells, particularly when compared with complex 2, 3 with no antiproliferative effect. The order of cytotoxicity in this cell line is 6 > 1 > 5 > 4 > 2 ≈ 3. Complex 2 seems to be much more specific towards colorectal carcinoma HCT116 and lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells. The viability loss induced by the complexes agrees with Hoechst 33258 staining and typical morphological apoptotic characteristics like chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation. The specificity towards different types of cell lines and the low cytotoxic activity towards healthy cells are of particular interest and are a positive feature for further developments. Complexes 1-6 were also tested in the oxidation of alkanes and alcohols with hydrogen peroxide and tert-butyl-hydroperoxide (TBHP). The most active catalyst 4 gave, after 120 min, 0.105 M of cyclohexanol + cyclohexanone after reduction with PPh₃. This concentration corresponds to a yield of 23% and TON = 210. Oxidation of cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane with m-CPBA catalyzed by 4 in the presence of HNO₃ gave a product of a stereoselective reaction (trans/cis = 0.47). Oxidation of secondary alcohols afforded the target ketones in yields up to 98% and TON = 630.

Abrupt spin transition in a modified-terpyridine cobalt(ii) complex with a highly-distorted [CoN6] core

The cobalt(ii) complex [Co(Naph-C2-terpy)₂](BF₂)₂ (1) incorporating a highly distorted [CoN₆] core was found to exhibit abrupt spin transition behavior, unlike solvated 1·2MeOH, which showed gradual spin crossover behavior.

Hydrazone-based cobalt complexes toward multielectron redox and spin crossover

Hydrazone-based derivatives modified by substitution at different positions were utilized to prepare a series of bis-homoleptic cobalt complexes. One species, [Co^III(L1)₂]⁺ (1), which incorporated deprotonated ligands, adopted a Co(iii) diamagnetic ground state. However, the substituent of a hydrogen atom with a methyl group precluded the possibility of deprotonation upon metal coordination, which led to two species, [Co^II(L2^Me)₂]²⁺ (2) and [Co^II(L3^NO2)₂]²⁺, (3) which underwent a gradual spin crossover with an adjustable substituent effect and a mixed character of low-spin (doublet) and high-spin (quartet) populations in wide temperature ranges. Depending on the electronic effects of the substituents on the ligand, the multielectron redox behavior of the cobalt center was systematically modulated as well. This result demonstrates redox-switchable spin crossover in a new hydrazone-based Co(ii) system, in which the deprotonation of the coordination pocket and substituent groups in aromatic ligands can have a profound effect on the redox potential and spin state of the metal center.

Resistive memory devices based on a triphenylamine-decorated non-precious cobalt(ii) bis-terpyridine complex

The ITO/active material/Au sandwiched devices of a cobalt(ii) bis-terpyridine complex decorated with two triphenylamine motifs display appealing flash-type resistive switching with a large ON/OFF ratio (>10³) and low operating voltages (<±3 V). In contrast, devices with the triphenylamine-appended terpyridine ligand show WORM-type memory behaviour.

Different magnetic responses observed in Co, Co and Co-based MOFs

Four magnetic MOFs with anisotropic Co(II) ions, {[Co5(H2O)2(μ3-OH)2(atz)2(stp)2]·1.5H2O}n (1), {[Co5(H2O)2(μ3-OH)2(trz)2(stp)2]·1.3H2O}n (2), {[Co5(H2O)6(μ3-OH)2(trz)2(stp)2]·2.5CH3OH}n (3) and {[Co3(H2O)4(Hdatrz)2(stp)2]·3H2O}n (4) (stp(3-) = 2-sulfoterephthalate, trz(-) = 1,2,4-triazolate, atz(-) = 3-amino-1,2,4-triazolate and Hdatrz = 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole) were solvothermally isolated by varying the substituent groups appended on the N-heterocyclic triazole and structurally and magnetically characterized. Structural analyses indicate that the former two complexes are crystallographically isostructural, exhibiting pillared-layer frameworks with mixed triazolyl and carboxylate extended Co + Co layers supported by rigid stp(3-) connectors. Complex 3 is built from butterfly-shaped Co cluster-based layers, which are interconnected with single cobalt(ii) octahedra by ditopic stp(3-) bridges. By contrast, complex 4 consists of linear {Co3(μ-N1,N4-Hdatrz)2} subunits, which are extended by 3-connected stp(3-) linkers into a stable 3D framework. Magnetically, 1 exhibits ferromagnetic ordering below 2.7 K due to the well-organized alignment of the non-compensated resultant moment from octahedra and tetrahedral cobalt(ii) carriers, while 3 is in a non-zero paramagnetic state above 2.0 K resulting from the coexistence of intermetallic ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The magnetic competition between weak inter-subunit antiferromagnetic interactions and the external magnetic field makes 4 behave as a field-induced metamagnet with a critical field of 27.5 kOe. These interesting magnetostructural results suggest that the anisotropy of the moment carrier and the interlayer/intersubunit separations significantly dominate the magnetic responses in extended MOFs, providing an informative platform for the further development of interesting magnetic materials, both of academic and industrial interest.

Dynamic spin interchange in a tridentate Fe(iii) Schiff-base compound

The thermosalient effect is still a rare and poorly understood phenomenon, where crystals suddenly jump, bend, twist or explode upon undergoing a thermally activated phase transition. The synthesis and characterisation of the new spin transition Fe(iii) compound [Fe(5-Br-salEen)2][ClO4] (salEen = N-ethyl-N-(2-aminoethyl)salicylaldiminate) is described and its thermosalient behaviour reported. It is the first example of a thermosalient effect with a spin transition and magnetic, calorimetric, diffraction, microscopy and computational studies are used to characterise these effects. Both thermosalient effect and spin transition occur around 320 K upon heating and are accompanied by an anisotropic unit cell change with conservation of crystal symmetry that causes a large enough stress of the crystal lattice to induce crystal explosion. This stress can ultimately be traced back to a diffusionless and distortive structural perturbation resulting in a coupled spin transition-thermosalient effect.

Spin-state diversity in a series of Co(ii) PNP pincer bromide complexes

We describe the structural and electronic impacts of modifying the bridging atom in a family of Co(ii) pincer complexes with the formula Co(t-Bu)₂P^EPy^EP(t-Bu)₂Br₂ (Py = pyridine, E = CH₂, NH, and O for compounds 1–3, respectively).
